Pension records normally call the inflation adjustment dearness relief (DR); dearness allowance (DA) is generally the term used for serving employees. A Central Civil pensioner should use the Central Pension Accounting Office (CPAO) Pensioners Information Service, an EPFO pensioner should use the EPFO Pensioners’ Portal, and a SAMPANN pensioner should use the SAMPANN services in UMANG. State-government pensioners may need a treasury, Accountant General or department portal named on their PPO.
Your PPO authorizes the pension or family pension and the DR admissible from time to time. To verify an actual credit, compare the PPO with the applicable revision order and the monthly payment record from the pension-paying bank or portal. Do not assume that a PPO amount alone proves an underpayment: commutation, later revisions, arrears and the effective period of a DR order can all change the credited total.

What “dearness allowance” means on a pension record
On pension documents, the adjustment readers often call dearness allowance is usually labelled dearness relief. DR is applied to the pension under the rules and government orders applicable to that pension category. The rate and the date from which it applies are not universal; they depend on the scheme, the pensioner’s category and the order in force for the relevant period.
The Government of India Pension Payment Order form places the authority in the disburser’s section with this wording: “Plus the amount of dearness relief as admissible from time to time thereon after due identification of the pensioner/family pensioner.” This means the PPO is not a permanently fixed DR-rate certificate. It authorizes the pension and the relief that becomes admissible under later orders, after the pensioner or family pensioner has been identified.

What a PPO does and does not tell you
- It identifies the pension or family-pension authorization and the paying authority.
- It may show the basic pension, commuted portion, residual pension, date of commencement and other particulars used for payment.
- It authorizes DR as it becomes admissible, but it may not display every later rate or effective date.
- It does not by itself show whether a particular month’s arrears, revision or bank credit was correctly posted.
Start with the issuing authority printed on your PPO
There is no single national lookup screen for every Indian pension. The identifier and records requested by one system may not work in another. Read the issuing office, scheme name and PPO number on the paper or digital order, then use that authority’s official service.
| Pension population | Where to start | Typical identifier or inputs | Records you can expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Civil pensioners | CPAO Pensioners Information Service (WRPS) | Registration and login details associated with the pension record; PPO and bank/PAO information may be shown in the profile | Monthly payment details, including basic pension, DR, medical allowance and arrears; pension and revision orders available for viewing or download |
| EPFO pensioners | EPFO Pensioners’ Portal, using its pension or payment enquiry service | Issued office, office ID, PPO number and date of birth for the payment-enquiry form | Status or payment-enquiry information; the portal describes the information as informational and subject to change without notice |
| SAMPANN pensioners | SAMPANN services in the UMANG portal or app | For “Know your PPO number,” bank or post-office account number and date of birth; life-certificate validity can also use the registered mobile number or PPO number with date of birth | PPO-number retrieval and life-certificate validity information |
| State-government or other schemes | The treasury, Accountant General, department or pension office named on the PPO | Varies by state and scheme; use the identifiers printed on the order or bank correspondence | Varies; do not assume that CPAO, EPFO or SAMPANN data covers the pension |
Find your PPO number and the correct record
- Inspect the PPO and bank papers. Look for the PPO number, issuing office, pension scheme, date of retirement or commencement and the pension-paying bank or post office.
- Match the authority to the scheme. A Central Civil PPO normally points you toward CPAO; an Employees’ Pension Scheme record points toward EPFO; a SAMPANN-issued record points toward UMANG services. A state order should be checked through its own named authority.
- If the number is missing, use the scheme’s official recovery route. Do not enter personal details into an unofficial “PPO search” page. SAMPANN’s official UMANG instructions specifically provide a PPO-number lookup using the bank or post-office account number and date of birth.
- Keep the exact spelling and date format. A mismatch in date of birth, office selection or PPO digits can return no record even when the pension is active.
Central Civil pension: check monthly DR and orders in CPAO
For a Central Civil pension, CPAO’s registered Pensioners Information Service is the most complete of the routes described here for checking both payment figures and the documents behind them. CPAO says its monthly information is based on bank scrolls received from banks. That makes the monthly view a payment record, not merely a copy of the original authorization.
Registration and sign-in
- Open the official CPAO Pensioners Information Service and register or sign in using the details requested by the service.
- Confirm that the profile’s PPO, pensioner name, bank and PAO information correspond to your papers. If the profile is for a different PPO, stop before relying on any amount.
- Open the monthly payment-details view and select the period you need. Save or print the record for the month in dispute.
Fields to review
- Basic pension: the pension figure used for that payment period, which can change after an approved revision.
- DR: the relief credited for the period under the applicable order.
- Medical allowance: a separate component where applicable.
- Arrears: a catch-up amount for an earlier period, often connected with a revision or delayed implementation.
- Net amount: the amount paid after the components and any recorded deductions are applied.
CPAO also provides digital pension and revision orders sent to banks. Open the order that covers the month you are checking and compare its effective date and revised basic pension with the monthly entry. A revision order may explain why the basic pension or arrears differs from the original PPO.

How the Central Civil payment scroll helps
CPAO’s pension-payment scheme describes scroll information that includes the payment period, basic pension, DR and net paid, among other fields. Use the period field first: an amount credited in a later month may contain arrears for an earlier effective date. Compare like with like instead of matching the total bank credit to the original PPO figure.
EPFO pension: use the correct enquiry form
EPFO pensioners should use the EPFO Pensioners’ Portal rather than CPAO. The portal separates pension-status and payment-enquiry functions, so choose the service that matches the question you are asking.
Payment enquiry inputs
- Open the EPFO Pensioners’ Portal and choose the pension or payment-enquiry service.
- Select the issued office and enter its office ID when requested.
- Enter the PPO number and the pensioner’s date of birth exactly as recorded.
- Submit the enquiry and save the result with the date on which you retrieved it.
The portal states that its information is informational and subject to change without notice. Treat a displayed status or amount as a useful check, then reconcile it with the bank statement and any order issued by the EPFO office. If the form rejects valid details, verify the office selection and PPO digits before assuming the pension has stopped.

SAMPANN pension: retrieve a PPO number or check life-certificate validity in UMANG
SAMPANN pensioners have different lookup options from CPAO and EPFO. The Press Information Bureau’s 21 January 2026 SAMPANN/UMANG release and FAQ describe the required inputs.
Retrieve the PPO number
- Open the official UMANG portal or app and search for SAMPANN or the pension service.
- Choose Know your PPO number.
- Enter the bank or post-office account number and date of birth requested by the service.
- Record the returned PPO number and use it for later correspondence with the pension office or disbursing bank.
Check life-certificate validity
The life-certificate validity service accepts a bank or post-office account number, a SAMPANN-registered mobile number, or a PPO number together with date of birth. Use the option that matches the information you have. This check addresses certificate validity; it is not a substitute for examining the DR component in a monthly payment record.
How to read the PPO, revision order and monthly credit together
Read the documents in sequence. The PPO establishes the original authorization; a later revision order changes the authorized figures from its stated effective date; the monthly bank or portal record shows what was actually posted for a particular period.
Rank #4
| Document or screen | Question it answers | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Original PPO | What pension or family pension was authorized, and which authority issued it? | PPO number, pension type, basic pension, commutation particulars, commencement date and paying authority |
| Revision or pension order | What changed, and from which date? | Effective date, revised basic pension, DR instruction and any arrears period |
| Monthly payment record or scroll | What did the bank record for a specific period? | Payment period, basic pension, DR, medical allowance, arrears, deductions where shown and net paid |
| Bank statement | What amount actually reached the account? | Credit date and amount, matched to the portal’s period and net-paid figure |
A practical reconciliation example
Suppose a revision order is effective from an earlier month but the bank implements it later. The monthly record for the implementation month may show the revised basic pension plus arrears for the earlier months. The bank statement may show one larger credit, while the portal labels only part of it as the current period. Check the period and arrears fields before concluding that DR was omitted.
How DR is calculated when pension has been commuted
Do not calculate DR on the residual pension after commutation. CPAO’s FAQ states that DR is payable on the original basic pension before commutation in the relevant Central Government pension context. The residual amount that appears after commutation can therefore be lower than the figure used as the DR base.

For example, if the PPO shows an original basic pension and a separately commuted portion, identify the original basic pension in the authorization or applicable revision order. Then check the DR entry in the monthly record against the rate and effective date in the order for your pension category. This article deliberately does not give one percentage for all pensioners: a rate that applies to one category, period or government order may not apply to another.

Central Government application of an increased rate
CPAO’s FAQ says that, for the relevant Central Government pension arrangement, a bank’s Central Pension Processing Centre (CPPC) does not need a separate PAO or CPAO authorization to apply an increased DR rate. That guidance should not be generalized to every state pension or every scheme. If your record is outside that Central Government context, follow the issuing authority’s order and contact route.

- Identify the exact period. Write down the month or months concerned and the date the bank credit arrived.
- Check the applicable order. Find the revision or DR order for your pension category and verify its effective date, not just the date printed on the order.
- Use the original DR base. If commutation applies, use the original basic pension before commutation, as CPAO’s FAQ directs for the relevant Central Government context.
- Separate current payment from arrears. Review the arrears field and any separate credit in the bank statement.
- Compare all three records. Match the PPO or revision order, the portal’s monthly details and the bank statement by period and net amount.
- Ask the right office. Contact the pension disbursing bank or its CPPC, or the issuing pension office, using contact details on the authority’s official site and on your PPO. Include the PPO number, period, order reference and a copy of the disputed record.
Common explanations for a difference
- A revision became effective earlier than the month in which the bank implemented it, creating arrears.
- The amount being compared is the residual pension after commutation, while DR is based on the original basic pension.
- The reader is using a DR order for a different pension category or effective period.
- The portal shows a payment-period amount while the bank statement groups current payment and arrears in one credit.
- The query was made in the wrong system; CPAO, EPFO, SAMPANN and state portals do not cover the same populations.
Protect your pension information
Official lookup services may ask for a PPO number, bank or post-office account number, office ID, registered mobile number and date of birth. Enter those details only on the authority’s official portal or app. Avoid search results that promise a PPO lookup without naming the issuing authority, and do not post a complete PPO number or date of birth in a public forum.
Save downloaded orders and monthly records in a private folder, note the retrieval date, and redact account numbers before sending documents by email unless the receiving pension office specifically requires the unredacted copy. A bank, CPAO, EPFO, SAMPANN or state authority may need the full identifiers to investigate, but those details should not be shared broadly.

When to contact the bank versus the pension office
Contact the pension-paying bank or CPPC when
- The portal shows a payment but the credit is absent or the net amount differs from the bank’s posting.
- A monthly scroll appears to contain the correct order but the account credit is not identifiable.
- The bank has not applied a rate that the competent authority’s order says is effective and payable.
Contact the issuing pension office when
- The PPO number, pension category or basic-pension figure is wrong in the authority’s record.
- A revision order is missing, has an unclear effective date or conflicts with the PPO.
- The portal cannot locate the pension even though the bank confirms that the account is active.
Use the contact details printed on the PPO or listed on the relevant authority’s official website. There is no single resolution workflow for every pension scheme, so state the scheme, PPO number, period, disputed field and documents already checked.
Quick Recap
A short checklist for every DR check
- Have I identified the issuing authority and pension scheme?
- Am I using “DR” for a pension record rather than assuming the serving-employee term “DA” applies?
- Do I have the PPO number, and if not, have I used the correct official retrieval route?
- Did I select the correct period and inspect basic pension, DR, arrears and net paid?
- Did I read any later revision order and its effective date?
- If commutation applies, did I use the original basic pension as the DR base?
- Have I compared the portal record with the bank statement instead of relying on the PPO alone?
- Am I contacting the correct bank, CPPC or issuing office with the relevant records?
