A map is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of indoor signal, capacity or handset compatibility. Switch only when the network works for your routine and your phone supports its Mexican bands and required calling technology.
What a coverage check can—and cannot—tell you
A coverage map shows where a carrier expects its radio network to provide service. It does not promise that your phone will work equally well inside a concrete house, below ground, in an elevator, during a local crowd surge or at the edge of a mapped area. Terrain, buildings, weather, network congestion and the condition and technical characteristics of your handset can all change the result.

For a practical decision, treat coverage as a location-and-use question rather than a national ranking. The relevant question is not “Which carrier has the biggest map?” but “Which available network gives me reliable service at my home, workplace, school, commute and regular destinations?” A network may show a broad estimated or roaming area while another offers a smaller area that is native and guaranteed at the places you need.

1. Start with the neutral IFT tool
Open the IFT’s Mi IFT app before looking at a carrier’s marketing map. The app includes mobile coverage maps, a data-use simulator, a telecommunications-service comparator and consumer assistance. Its neutral view helps you identify candidate networks and compare plans without assuming that one operator is best everywhere.
How to use Mi IFT
- Open the mobile-coverage section and allow location access only if you want to center the map on your current position.
- Search or move the map to your municipality and mark the places that matter: your home, work, school, family addresses, regular stops and destinations you visit often.
- Record which operators appear available and which technology layer is shown at each location. Note LTE/4G separately from 5G, 3G or 2G.
- Use the data-use simulator to estimate the allowance your routine requires, then use the service comparator to compare plans that meet that usage.
- Save or write down the candidate networks and locations. You will verify each one on the operator’s own map and in person.
Mi IFT is a screening tool, not a substitute for the carrier maps or a field test. Map layers, network arrangements and local deployments change, so repeat the check shortly before you switch.
2. Check each carrier’s official map
After the neutral check, open the official map for every plausible network. The controls and definitions differ, so do not compare colors without reading each legend.

| Carrier | Location search | Layers and map distinctions | What to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T México | Address and postcode lookup | Total coverage plus separate 4G, 3G and 5G views | The exact layer at each address and whether the result changes between total and 4G/5G views |
| Telcel | State, municipality or alcaldía selection | 5G, 4G, 3G and 2G maps; symbols distinguish guaranteed and non-guaranteed coverage | Whether your location is in a guaranteed area, a non-guaranteed area or outside the needed layer |
| Movistar México | Location search on its coverage map | 5G, 4G/LTE, 3G and extended-coverage maps | Whether service is native guaranteed coverage or extended coverage based on national roaming |
Search the same places on all three maps
Use the same address or map point for each operator. Check a precise street location rather than relying on the outline of an entire city or municipality. Repeat the search for your workplace, school, parents’ or children’s homes, your usual highway or rail route and places where you spend weekends. A carrier that works at home but fails along your commute may not solve your problem.
Take a screenshot or note the date, selected layer and legend status. This creates a record you can compare with your later SIM test and helps you spot a mismatch between a map prediction and actual service.

3. Match the technology layer to your use
Do not treat every colored area as equivalent. Ask what your phone needs to do at that location.
- LTE/4G: Use this as the baseline for dependable everyday smartphone data, messaging, navigation and general browsing.
- 5G: Consider it an additional capability, not a guarantee. Your handset must support the carrier’s Mexican 5G bands and your plan must include 5G service.
- 3G: Record it when it is the only layer shown, but test your actual data tasks before relying on it.
- 2G: A map may display it as a legacy layer. Confirm that it meets your specific calling or messaging needs; do not assume it provides modern data performance.
When two networks both show coverage, prefer the one that provides LTE/4G at more of your important locations and then verify indoor performance. A larger 5G footprint does not compensate for weak LTE where you spend most of your day.

4. Read the legends and coverage qualifications
AT&T: conditions that can affect service
AT&T’s coverage information warns that service can be affected by the mobile equipment’s technical characteristics and condition, indoor use, underground sites, elevators, helicopters and places with an unusual concentration of users. Therefore, a strong outdoor map result may not predict a basement office, an apartment behind thick walls or a crowded stadium.
Telcel: guaranteed and non-guaranteed areas
Telcel’s map uses separate symbols for guaranteed and non-guaranteed coverage. Keep that distinction in your notes. Telcel also identifies terrain, weather, buildings, congestion and handset condition as factors that can change service. A broad “largest coverage” marketing statement cannot tell you whether your particular room or route works; the municipality-level map and a test are more relevant.
Movistar: native versus extended coverage
Movistar defines coverage as the geographic area where a voice or data service is offered so a smartphone can receive a signal and communicate satisfactorily. Its extended-coverage area relies on national roaming and is an estimate, not the same status as guaranteed coverage. If a key location appears only in extended coverage, test it there and check what limitations apply before treating it as equivalent to native service.
Rank #3
These qualifications are why a map match is evidence, not a promise. Keep the legend status attached to every note you make; “covered” without the layer and qualification is incomplete.
5. Run a low-commitment field test
The safest way to check a candidate carrier before porting is to use a temporary prepaid SIM or eSIM, where available, in an unlocked phone. A dual-SIM handset lets you keep your current line active while testing the second network.
Prepare the test
- Confirm that the phone is unlocked and that it accepts the candidate SIM size or eSIM format.
- Install the prepaid SIM or eSIM and complete the carrier’s activation steps.
- Disable Wi-Fi during each test so the phone is using mobile service. If the phone supports dual SIM, identify which line is supplying data.
- Write down the location, date, time, signal indicator, network technology shown by the phone and whether calls, messages and data work.
Test the tasks you actually perform
| Test | How to run it | What a failure tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Voice call | Call a reliable contact from inside your home, workplace and another routine location. | Indoor radio or voice-service weakness; repeat at the times you normally call. |
| SMS | Send and receive a text message while stationary and while moving along your usual route. | Messaging reliability may be poor even when a data icon appears. |
| Upload and download | Transfer a normal photo or file and load the services you use for work, banking or school. | Shows whether the connection handles your real data workload, not just a signal bar. |
| Speed-sensitive task | Try video, a live meeting, navigation with map tiles or another task that matters to you. | Reveals the effect of congestion and latency at the time you need service. |
Test at different times, including your busiest period. An evening connection may behave differently from a mid-morning visit. Test inside the rooms where you use the phone, at the entrance and outdoors; buildings can attenuate a signal sharply. Repeat the route between home and work if losing service there would be costly.
6. Verify your exact handset before buying or switching
Coverage belongs to a network, but connection quality also depends on the precise phone model. Check the manufacturer’s model number, not just the retail name, against the LTE and 5G bands used in Mexico by the candidate operator. Confirm whether the device supports VoLTE where the carrier requires it for voice, and verify the SIM or eSIM format.
Telcel recommends equipment homologated through authorized channels and notes that the equipment’s technical characteristics and physical condition can affect service. Imported, damaged or region-specific models may omit a needed band even when the same phone name is sold in Mexico. Ask the carrier or manufacturer to confirm compatibility for the exact model identifier before you commit.
Rank #4
- Record the model number and software version.
- Confirm LTE bands and, if relevant, 5G bands for the network you are testing.
- Check VoLTE support and activation requirements.
- Confirm whether the phone accepts a physical SIM, eSIM or both.
- Inspect the SIM tray, antenna and device condition if the phone is used.
If a temporary SIM performs poorly in a phone that is not fully compatible, do not conclude that the carrier is unsuitable until you have ruled out the handset.
7. Compare networks on the factors that matter
If two or more networks pass your initial test, compare them using the same criteria rather than choosing by one map color or one speed result.
| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Coverage status | Is the location guaranteed, estimated, non-guaranteed or extended through roaming? |
| Technology | Does LTE/4G reach the places you need, and is 5G available only where your compatible phone and plan support it? |
| Indoor performance | Did calls, texts and data work in the rooms, buildings and underground spaces you actually use? |
| Congestion | Did the connection remain usable during your busiest times, or did speeds and responsiveness collapse? |
| Roaming dependence | If service is extended coverage, is it based on national roaming and does the operator describe it as an estimate? |
| Handset compatibility | Does your exact model support the required Mexican LTE/5G bands, VoLTE and SIM type? |
| Plan fit | Does the allowance match your Mi IFT data-use estimate, and are the activation and portability terms acceptable? |
Give more weight to repeated success at priority locations than to a single peak-speed reading. If one network is slightly faster outdoors but fails inside your home, it is the weaker practical choice for your routine.

Mexican mobile users have the right to free number portability while retaining the same number when changing providers. Porting is therefore the final step, not the way to discover whether coverage works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Keep your current line active while the temporary test is running.
- Confirm the new carrier’s activation and portability requirements, and check any account information it asks you to provide.
- Verify that your phone is unlocked and compatible before requesting the port.
- Start the portability process with the new provider only after the candidate network passes your location and time tests.
- Follow the provider’s instructions until the new SIM or eSIM is active, then test calls, SMS and data again.
- Do not cancel the old service prematurely if the provider instructs you to keep it active during the transfer.
The number can move with you, but a port does not fix weak indoor signal, an incompatible handset or a congested cell. Resolve those issues before submitting the request.

Troubleshooting a coverage mismatch
The map says covered, but the phone has no signal indoors
Move to a window or outdoors to separate building loss from a wider outage. Check whether the map layer was LTE/4G, 5G, 3G or another layer, then repeat the test with a compatible phone. If service works only outside, record the indoor limitation rather than treating the map as wrong.
Calls work, but data is unusable
Confirm that mobile data is assigned to the test SIM, Wi-Fi is off and the phone is connecting to LTE/4G rather than a weaker legacy layer. Repeat during a busy period and test an ordinary upload or download. Congestion, handset bands and plan restrictions can all affect data independently of basic voice service.
Service fails along one part of the commute
Test that segment at the time you travel and note whether the map shows native, guaranteed service or an estimated or extended area. If the failure is consistent, choose the network that meets the route requirement even if another carrier performs better at home.
A 5G map area does not produce 5G
Check the exact handset model, 5G band support, plan eligibility and device settings. 5G is an additional layer; LTE/4G coverage remains the practical baseline for locations where 5G is unavailable or unsupported.
Final pre-switch checklist
- Mi IFT identified at least one plausible network.
- Each important address and route was checked on the relevant official maps.
- The map layer and legend status were recorded for every priority location.
- Indoor, outdoor and busy-time tests were completed with a prepaid SIM or eSIM.
- Calls, SMS, uploads, downloads and a speed-sensitive task worked where required.
- The exact phone model supports the network’s Mexican LTE/5G bands, VoLTE needs and SIM format.
- You understand whether any service depends on estimated or extended national roaming.
- The new carrier’s activation and portability requirements are ready before you submit the request.
Recheck the maps immediately before switching because coverage data and roaming arrangements can change. The strongest decision is the one supported by the neutral IFT view, the operator legend and your own field results at the places and times that matter.
