You can estimate your pension’s AI exposure by identifying every fund you own, downloading each fund’s dated holdings disclosure, classifying holdings as direct AI businesses or AI-enabling companies, and weighting those estimates by each fund’s share of your pot. Most providers do not publish a ready-made “AI percentage”, and a top-10 list rarely covers the whole portfolio. Treat your result as a dated estimate, show the classification rule and missing assets, and ask the provider or trustees for look-through data when disclosures are incomplete.
What is the quickest reliable way to check your pension’s AI exposure?
Start with the funds rather than the pension brand. A workplace pension may contain several underlying funds, and a label such as “Global Equity” does not identify the companies inside it. Your first job is to create an inventory of the exact funds and their weights.

Record the provider, scheme, exact fund name (or retirement-date fund), current pot value and percentage allocation to each fund. Save a screenshot or statement showing the date.
- Find the newest holdings disclosure. Look in the provider’s investment or fund-information area for a holdings spreadsheet, portfolio file, factsheet, key investor information document (KIID), key information document (KID), annual report or half-year report.
- Record two dates. Write down the portfolio “holdings as at” date and the document’s publication date. A report published today can describe holdings from months earlier.
- Define two exposure buckets. Keep direct AI developers and specialist AI funds separate from enabling businesses such as chipmakers, cloud platforms, data-centre operators, networking companies, power suppliers and related infrastructure.
- Add the disclosed weights. Sum the percentages for each bucket, noting whether the file covers the whole fund, equities only, or an underlying pooled vehicle.
- Roll the estimates up to your pot. Multiply each fund’s AI estimate by that fund’s share of your pension, then add the contributions.
- Request missing information. If you can see only a top-10 list or an asset-class split, ask the provider, trustees, independent governance committee or employer for a look-through holdings file and its as-of date.
This process gives you a transparent, repeatable estimate rather than a marketing number. Re-run it whenever allocations change or a newer disclosure is issued.
How do I identify the exact funds inside my pension?
Read the investment page, not just the scheme name
Your account may show a scheme name, a default strategy and several components. Capture the fund’s legal or quoted name, share class where shown, identifier (often an ISIN), currency and percentage of the pot. Two funds with similar names can have different holdings, fees and risk.

Retirement-date and lifestyle funds need extra care
A retirement-date or lifestyle strategy can switch from growth assets into bonds and cash as you approach retirement. The name on your account may describe the strategy while the holdings are split among several underlying funds. Download the strategy factsheet and list each underlying fund and its current allocation; otherwise an AI estimate can be overstated by analysing only the growth phase.
Keep a dated worksheet
Use one row per fund and preserve the original file name. Useful columns are fund name, identifier, pot percentage, holdings-as-at date, publication date, coverage (whole fund or partial), direct-AI estimate, broader-AI-linked estimate and notes on omissions. This audit trail lets you explain why your estimate changes from one quarter to the next.

Where can I find a fund’s company holdings?
Provider portals and downloadable files
Many providers place holdings under links labelled “investments”, “fund factsheets”, “portfolio”, or “responsible investment”. Prefer a spreadsheet or full portfolio file over a graphic showing only the largest positions. Search by the exact fund name and identifier, then check that the document refers to your share class or pooled vehicle.
Regulatory and statutory documents
If a portal is sparse, check the fund’s KID or KIID, annual report and half-year report. These documents can include asset names, identifiers, asset class, domicile, country exposure and percentage of portfolio. The Financial Conduct Authority’s portfolio-data fields are a useful checklist when you ask a provider what it can supply.
Examples of better transparency
Nest’s online holdings tool lists companies, while its quarterly investment reports also cover property, government bonds and other investment types. Nest says its company data is refreshed every three months. The London Pension Fund Authority’s Tumelo dashboard has displayed individual equity company names and short company biographies and has been updated quarterly. Availability varies by scheme; these examples are illustrations of what to request, not a guarantee that your own provider offers the same view.
What dates and coverage should I check before calculating?
Every percentage needs a scope and a date. A company list may cover only listed equities, while the fund also owns bonds, property, private assets, cash or derivatives. An underlying pooled vehicle may publish data on a different schedule from the pension wrapper that contains it.

Do not treat a top-10 table as a full portfolio. It can establish that certain companies are present, but it cannot establish the total AI percentage. State that your sum is a lower bound when smaller positions are not disclosed.
Which holdings count as AI companies?
Direct AI exposure
Use this category for companies whose primary products or services are AI models, AI software, specialised processors, or platforms explicitly built to sell AI capability. A specialist AI fund can also be reported here, but note whether you are counting the fund’s look-through holdings or merely its unit as a single position.
AI-enabling exposure
Include businesses that supply the infrastructure AI needs: semiconductors, cloud computing, data centres, networking, cooling, power generation and utilities, specialist real estate, and relevant financial or industrial assets. The Pensions Regulator (TPR) warns that AI exposure can span technology, infrastructure, energy, real estate and financial assets, so a technology-sector screen alone will miss indirect links.

Choose and disclose a classification rule
There is no universal line between AI and non-AI. For example, a diversified cloud provider may earn substantial revenue from ordinary computing as well as AI workloads. Write down whether you classify by the company’s main business, a reported AI-revenue share, an index or fund manager’s sector label, or your own judgement. Apply the same rule to every fund and flag borderline cases instead of hiding them in a single precise number.

How do I calculate direct and broader AI percentages?
Calculate two figures for each fund. The first is the sum of disclosed weights for direct AI holdings. The second adds the weights of your chosen enabling sectors. Keep the figures separate so a reader can see whether the result is concentrated in AI developers or spread across the supply chain.
Fund-level calculation
If a fund file lists a direct AI company at 2.4% and another at 1.6%, the fund’s disclosed direct exposure is 4.0%. If enabling holdings add 6.5%, broader AI-linked exposure is 10.5%. These are percentages of the fund, not your pension pot, and they exclude anything the file does not disclose.
Use a formula such as direct exposure = sum of disclosed direct-AI holding weights and broader exposure = direct exposure + sum of disclosed enabling-sector weights. Keep a separate note for holdings whose classification is uncertain.
Pot-level calculation
Multiply each fund’s estimate by its allocation in your pension:
pot contribution = fund allocation × fund AI estimate
For example, if Fund A is 60% of your pot and has an estimated 8% direct exposure, its contribution is 4.8 percentage points (0.60 × 0.08). If Fund B is 40% of the pot with a 3% estimate, it contributes 1.2 points. Your estimated direct exposure is therefore 6.0% of the pot. Repeat the calculation for broader exposure using the same fund weights.
| Fund | Share of your pot | Estimated direct AI in fund | Contribution to pot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fund A | 60% | 8% | 4.8 percentage points |
| Fund B | 40% | 3% | 1.2 percentage points |
| Total | 100% | 6.0 percentage points |
The example is a calculation method, not a provider-published personal figure. Round only after adding the contributions, and label the result with the holdings date and coverage limitations.
What if my provider discloses only top holdings or asset classes?
Report what the evidence can support and no more. A top-10 list can produce a minimum disclosed exposure if one of those holdings qualifies, but it cannot measure the unseen positions. An asset-class chart can tell you how much is in equities, bonds or property, but not which companies sit inside those categories.

- Top holdings only: calculate a lower bound from the listed positions and say that smaller holdings are missing.
- Equities only: label the estimate “disclosed equity exposure”; do not imply that bonds, derivatives, private assets, property or cash have zero AI links.
- Underlying pooled fund: use the pooled fund’s own holdings date and explain that the pension wrapper may have a different valuation date.
- No company data: ask for a look-through file or a sector and country breakdown; if none is available, report that a reliable percentage cannot be determined from public documents.
The Pensions Policy Institute describes UK pension-asset data as “multiple, partial and inconsistent”. Its 2024 analysis covered about £3 trillion of UK pension assets, but that aggregate does not reveal an individual member’s AI percentage. Do not use an industry-wide number as a substitute for your own fund disclosure.
Why can a diversified pension still have a large AI concentration?
AI companies are increasingly significant in major market indices, and AI-related revenue is embedded across sectors. TPR’s guidance, AI concentration risk: Action for trustees, published 22 October 2026, states: “Even a diversified portfolio may have hidden concentration risk because AI is increasingly embedded across sectors.” The guidance is aimed at trustees, but its questions help members challenge a provider’s generic “diversified” description.
Market-capitalisation-weighted passive funds can become more concentrated as related companies rise in value: the largest firms receive larger index weights without an investor making an active decision. Two funds that both track global equities can therefore overlap heavily in the same large technology and infrastructure companies. Check the largest single holding, the top-10 total and the overlap between every fund in your pot.
TPR’s accompanying press release reported that global private AI investment rose 127.5% year on year in 2025. That is a market statistic, not a measure of any individual pension’s exposure; private investment growth can occur without a corresponding holding in your scheme.
How should I compare two pension funds’ AI exposure?
Compare like with like: use the same holdings date where possible, the same classification rule and the same coverage. A fund with a higher number may simply disclose more of its portfolio.
| Comparison | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Direct AI weight | Sum of disclosed direct-AI holdings | Shows exposure to businesses most dependent on AI demand |
| Broader enabling weight | Direct weight plus your defined infrastructure categories | Captures indirect links across chips, cloud, networks, energy and property |
| Largest holding and top-10 total | Each percentage and the combined top-10 share | Reveals concentration that a sector label can hide |
| Overlap | Companies appearing in more than one fund | Prevents double-counting diversification |
| Geography and currency | Country exposure and currency of assets | Shows where economic and currency risks sit |
| Management style | Passive index or active mandate | Passive weights can rise automatically with market capitalisation; active managers may set different limits |
| Charges | Ongoing fund and scheme charges shown in documents | A higher AI estimate is not the only cost or risk difference |
| Disclosure completeness | Full holdings, top holdings or asset classes only | A more precise-looking percentage may simply reflect better disclosure |
| Update frequency | Monthly, quarterly or annual refresh | Frequent updates reduce the gap between the estimate and current holdings |
Do not rank funds on AI exposure alone. A lower direct percentage can still carry substantial enabling exposure, and a fund with complete disclosure may appear riskier only because its smaller positions are visible.
What questions should I ask my provider, trustees or employer?
Send a specific request that asks for data, scope and dates. Generic questions such as “Am I invested in AI?” often produce a marketing description rather than holdings.
- What are the full legal names and identifiers of every fund in my current allocation?
- Can you provide the latest look-through holdings for each underlying fund, including percentage weights and the holdings-as-at date?
- Does the file include bonds, derivatives, private assets, property, cash and pooled vehicles, or equities only?
- Which holdings do you classify as AI-related, and what definition or revenue threshold do you use?
- How often are holdings refreshed, and where will the next file be posted?
- What is the largest single holding and the combined top-10 weight in each fund?
- Are there dashboards that show individual companies, and can members access them?
If the provider cannot answer, contact the scheme trustees or independent governance committee. For a workplace scheme, your employer’s benefits team can route a formal data request, but the investment decision normally sits with the trustees or provider rather than payroll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow often should I repeat the calculation?
Repeat it when you change funds, when a lifestyle strategy moves between phases, and whenever a new holdings file is issued. Quarterly is a practical minimum for a fast-moving theme if your provider publishes quarterly data; Nest, for example, says its company tool is refreshed every three months. Between disclosures, market prices and portfolio trades can change weights, so describe the result as “as at” the file date rather than current to the day.

Keep prior worksheets instead of overwriting them. A time series can show whether exposure rose because you made an allocation decision, because an index rebalanced, or because the companies’ share prices changed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common mistakes produce a misleading AI percentage?
Confusing the pension provider with the fund manager
The provider administers your account, but an external manager may run the underlying fund. Search for the fund’s legal documents and manager, not only the provider’s brand.
Counting a company twice
If the same company appears in two funds, add each fund’s weighted contribution to your pot, but do not describe it as two different companies. For a company-level concentration view, combine the exposures after applying each fund’s pot allocation.
Mixing dates
Combining a March holdings file for one fund with a September file for another can create a false comparison. Put the as-of date beside every percentage and explain the mismatch.
Calling all technology “AI”
Technology-sector membership is a proxy, not proof of AI exposure. Use the company’s business description or a documented classification rule, and show direct and enabling totals separately.
Assuming undisclosed assets are zero
Bonds, property, private investments, derivatives and cash can be absent from a company list. Mark the estimate incomplete when those assets are outside the disclosure.
Using a market statistic as a personal result
Growth in global private AI investment, index concentration or an industry-wide asset total describes the market, not your pension. Only your fund allocations and dated holdings can support a personal estimate.
Can I see every company my pension owns?
Sometimes, but not always. Some schemes publish full or near-full equity files; others publish only the largest holdings, sector weights or an underlying pooled fund’s report. Private assets, derivatives and certain pooled vehicles may not be disclosed at company level, and holdings can change after publication. If a complete list is unavailable, ask for the most granular file permitted by the scheme and label your calculation as partial.
Is a high AI exposure automatically bad for my pension?
No. AI exposure can contribute to returns, but it also creates concentration, valuation, regulatory, supply-chain and infrastructure risks. Whether the level is suitable depends on your time to retirement, risk tolerance, other savings and the fund’s overall diversification. The useful first step is transparency: know what you own before deciding whether an allocation change is justified.

FAQ
Does my workplace pension own shares in major AI companies?
It may, directly or through an index or pooled fund, but the scheme name cannot answer that question. Check the exact underlying fund and its latest holdings file; if only top holdings are published, the file can confirm presence but not rule out smaller positions.
Can I ask my employer to remove AI investments?
You can ask how the default fund is selected and raise concerns with the employer, trustees or independent governance committee. In most schemes, the employer does not choose individual shares, so any change normally requires a fund-selection or investment-governance decision rather than a payroll instruction.
Why does my AI percentage change even when I do nothing?
Fund managers trade, index weights rebalance and share prices move every day. Your percentage can therefore change without a contribution or switch; compare dated holdings files and your fund allocation history to identify the cause.
Are pension dashboards required to show AI exposure?
There is no universal member-facing AI field. Some schemes provide company-level dashboards, while others publish statutory reports or only summary allocations, so request the underlying holdings and classification methodology directly.
Should I switch funds after finding a large AI allocation?
Not solely on the headline percentage. First check concentration, overlap, charges, geographic exposure, disclosure quality and your retirement timeframe, then consider regulated financial advice if the decision would materially change your retirement plan.
