The controlling date comes from the complete notice, the legal provision cited in it and the current rules for that proceeding. Open the full PDF or order on the official GST Portal—not only the SMS, email alert or dashboard summary—and record the form number, notice reference, issue and service dates, tax period, required action and stated deadline.
For example, an unregistered taxable person who receives FORM GST ASMT-14 for a section 63 best-judgment assessment is given 15 days to furnish a reply under the process described in the CBIC assessment rules. That 15-day period must not be copied onto a scrutiny notice, demand notice or any other GST communication. A section 61 scrutiny discrepancy is answered in ASMT-11, while a covered show-cause notice whose summary is in DRC-01 uses DRC-06 under Rule 142(4).

How do I check the due date for a GST notice?
Start with the notice itself. The portal alert is only a notification that something has been issued or uploaded; it may not show every condition, annexure or calculation that controls your response. Download the notice and all annexures, then compare them with any email or physical communication you received.
Record the controlling details
Create a short case record before preparing a reply. Capture:

- the GSTIN and legal name of the taxpayer;
- the notice form number, such as ASMT-11, ASMT-14 or DRC-01;
- the section, rule or other legal provision cited;
- the notice reference number and issue date;
- the date and manner of service or the date it became available to you;
- the financial year, tax period or transaction period involved;
- the exact action requested, including explanations, records, payment or appearance;
- the response date or response period printed in the notice; and
- any separate hearing date, payment option or instruction about attachments.
Do not calculate a deadline from the date of an SMS unless the notice or applicable rule says that service occurred then. Keep evidence of when the notice was served or first became accessible, especially if the portal and a paper or emailed copy show different dates.
Check the rule that governs that notice
After identifying the provision, read the current Central Goods and Services Tax Act and Rules for that specific proceeding. The notice may set a date, while the Act or Rules explain how the period is measured—for example, from service rather than from issue. A period in one proceeding cannot be transferred to another simply because the forms look similar.
The 15-day ASMT-14 example arises from the section 63 assessment process for an unregistered taxable person. It is not a general GST reply period. Likewise, the 30-day period associated with certain section 73 or section 74 payments is a payment route with its own conditions, not a universal deadline for filing every reply.

Resolve a mismatch immediately
If the notice states one date and the portal shows another, preserve both versions and seek prompt, case-specific advice from a qualified GST practitioner. Do not wait for the discrepancy to resolve itself. The same approach applies when an annexure is missing, the notice appears already overdue, the reference number does not match the dashboard entry or the legal provision is unreadable.

Which GST notice form do you need to answer?
Form choice depends on the notice category. The examples below are commonly encountered, but they are not an exhaustive list of GST communications.
| Notice or proceeding | Provision or purpose | Taxpayer response form | How to determine the deadline | Hearing or payment point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scrutiny discrepancy notice | Section 61 scrutiny of a return or related particulars | FORM GST ASMT-11 | Use the date and period in the scrutiny communication and the current rule governing section 61; no universal number is established here. | Follow the notice instructions; do not substitute DRC-06 unless the notice is a covered show-cause proceeding. |
| Best-judgment assessment notice to an unregistered taxable person | Section 63 assessment | FORM GST ASMT-14 is the notice; the section 63 process described by CBIC allows 15 days to furnish a reply. | Count the 15-day reply period as directed by the notice and applicable rule, taking service into account. | Any hearing or subsequent order depends on the notice and proceeding. |
| Covered show-cause notice with summary in DRC-01 | Demand or recovery process covered by Rule 142(4) | FORM GST DRC-06 | Use the response date in the show-cause notice and Rule 142 or the cited provision; the table does not establish one deadline for every DRC-01. | DRC-06 includes a personal-hearing preference. Certain section 73/74 cases may also have a conditional payment route under Rule 142(3). |
Always match the reply to the notice reference and period shown on the document. Uploading a correctly completed form against the wrong reference can create a new procedural problem even when the written explanation is sound.
How can I reply to a GST notice online?
The exact buttons and menu labels can change, and not every notice uses the same portal workflow. Log in to the official GST Portal through its own address, open the notice or response action displayed for your GSTIN and follow the form named in that action. Before submitting, verify that the selected notice number, form and financial year match the downloaded document.

- Make a notice index. Number each allegation, discrepancy or question in the same order as the notice.
- Build a fact-and-calculation sheet. For every point, state the amount, tax period, return or invoice involved, your position and the source record supporting it.
- Collect readable evidence. Use invoices, contracts, ledgers, e-way bills, payment proofs, returns, reconciliations and correspondence that directly address the notice. Remove unrelated personal data where it is not needed.
- Name files consistently. Use a short description and sequence, such as “Point-1-invoice-104.pdf,” and keep the same names in the written reply and document list.
- Check the upload limits. The live form determines permitted file types and sizes. If a document is too large, divide it logically and explain the split in the list rather than omitting pages.
- Obtain authority to sign. The person submitting must be the authorized signatory shown for the GSTIN or otherwise authorized under the taxpayer’s records.
Use a point-by-point written explanation
A practical reply is not a long narrative. Begin with the notice reference, issue date, GSTIN, taxpayer name and relevant financial year or tax period. Then answer each numbered issue separately:

- state whether you accept, partly accept or dispute the point;
- explain the underlying facts and the calculation in plain language;
- identify the return, invoice, ledger or other record that proves the explanation;
- show any corrected computation, including tax, interest or penalty components where relevant; and
- state the precise relief or action requested, such as dropping a discrepancy after verification.
Do not call a document an attachment unless it is actually uploaded. Your upload list should use the same sequence and description as the files visible in the final submission.
Complete a DRC-06 response
For a covered show-cause notice, Rule 142(4) identifies DRC-06 as the taxpayer reply. The prescribed form asks for the GSTIN and name, notice reference and issue date, financial year, written reply, a list of uploaded documents, a yes-or-no personal-hearing preference and verification by the authorized signatory.
- Enter the GSTIN and legal name exactly as shown in the notice.
- Enter the notice reference and issue date without changing punctuation or digits.
- Select the financial year or period that appears in the notice.
- Paste or type the point-by-point reply, preserving headings that make each allegation easy to locate.
- List every uploaded document and identify which paragraph or allegation it supports.
- Select the personal-hearing option if you want to request one; explain the request in the written reply if the form or notice permits additional detail.
- Complete the prescribed verification and authorized-signatory details.
- Review the generated preview, correct mismatched references or missing pages, submit and save the filed copy and acknowledgement or reference displayed by the portal.
Reply to an ASMT-11 scrutiny notice
When the communication is a section 61 scrutiny discrepancy, the GST forms directory identifies ASMT-11 as the taxpayer reply. Use the response action connected to that scrutiny notice, address each discrepancy, and attach reconciliations or records that explain the figures. Do not file DRC-06 merely because the notice asks for an explanation; DRC-06 is tied to the covered show-cause category described by Rule 142(4).
Respond to an ASMT-14 notice
ASMT-14 is the section 63 best-judgment assessment notice for an unregistered taxable person. The CBIC assessment rules describe 15 days to furnish a reply in this process. Read the individual notice for the exact service date, particulars sought and submission instructions, then use the response mechanism shown for that notice. If the notice concerns a different category despite using a similar-looking form, rely on its cited provision rather than assuming the same period.

Can I ask for a personal hearing in my GST notice reply?
Yes, where the response form provides the choice, you can indicate that you want a personal hearing. DRC-06 contains a yes-or-no hearing preference. The statutory basis is section 75(4) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017: An opportunity of hearing shall be granted where a request is received in writing from the person chargeable with tax or penalty, or where any adverse decision is contemplated against such person.
Make the request in writing in the form and, where useful, in the body of your reply. Identify the notice reference and explain why an oral hearing would help clarify disputed facts, calculations or documents. The statute establishes the hearing rule; it does not guarantee a particular date, venue, video method or outcome. Monitor the portal and other official communications after filing so that a scheduled hearing is not missed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Is there a payment option instead of contesting a notice?
For specified section 73 or section 74 matters, Rule 142(3) describes a conditional route: payment within 30 days of service of the notice, intimation through DRC-03 and an officer’s DRC-05 concluding the proceedings. The route is available only when the provision and facts satisfy its conditions.

Do not pay simply because a notice contains a demand figure. First determine whether the amount is accepted, whether interest and penalty have been computed correctly, whether the notice is within the cited provision and whether a partial payment or reply is required. A payment may affect the ability to dispute an amount or may not resolve issues outside the qualifying rule. If you use the route, retain the DRC-03 details, payment challan and DRC-05 or other closure communication with the notice.

What happens if you miss the GST notice deadline?
The available official material does not establish one consequence for every missed GST deadline. Results depend on the notice type, governing section, service date, whether an order has already been passed and any extension or hearing procedure available in that case.
If the date has passed or is imminent:
- Download and preserve the notice, annexures, portal status and service evidence.
- Check whether the portal still offers a response, extension, rectification or hearing action.
- Submit a complete response immediately if the system accepts it, clearly explaining the timing issue without altering facts.
- Contact a qualified GST practitioner promptly for advice under the cited provision, particularly if an assessment or demand order is already visible.
- Keep proof of every attempted and successful submission, including screenshots, acknowledgement numbers and payment records.
Do not assume that silence automatically closes the matter, and do not assume that a late upload is automatically accepted. The notice and current law control what remedies remain.
How to preserve proof after filing
Save the final generated reply, every attachment, the acknowledgement or reference number, the submission timestamp and any challan or payment confirmation. Keep the original downloaded notice and a version of the files exactly as uploaded. Store a separate index showing which document supports each paragraph.

The reviewed form requirements establish what a response must contain, but they do not establish one acknowledgement workflow for every notice type. Treat record retention as prudent protection for follow-up, not as a promise that every portal screen will look the same.
Common mistakes that create avoidable GST notice problems
- Using the SMS date: an alert may not contain the service date or the complete period calculation.
- Borrowing a deadline: the 15-day ASMT-14 period and 30-day section 73/74 payment route are tied to specific processes.
- Choosing a form by keyword: “notice” or “demand” is not enough; match the legal provision, form and reference.
- Ignoring annexures: the calculation supporting an allegation may be in a separate file.
- Uploading a narrative without an index: the officer should be able to trace every assertion to a named record.
- Requesting a hearing only by phone: use the written option in the form and keep the filed copy.
- Submitting under the wrong GSTIN or year: preview the form and notice reference before final submission.
- Paying without checking the route: DRC-03 payment and DRC-05 closure apply only where Rule 142(3) conditions are met.
A quick decision framework
Use this sequence whenever a new GST notice arrives:
- Identify: download the complete notice and read the form number, provision, period and requested action.
- Date: record issue and service dates, then apply the period stated in that notice and rule.
- Classify: decide whether it is a section 61 scrutiny reply, section 63 ASMT-14 process, DRC-01 show-cause proceeding or another category.
- Prepare: answer each point, calculate amounts, assemble evidence and list files.
- Select: use the response form tied to the notice—ASMT-11, DRC-06 or the form specifically named in the communication.
- Request: choose the personal-hearing option where available and appropriate.
- Submit: use the response action shown on the official GST Portal, complete authorized-signatory verification and save proof.
- Follow up: monitor for acknowledgements, hearing notices, orders or further queries and consult a professional when the deadline, provision or status is unclear.
This workflow keeps the deadline, form and evidence tied to the actual notice instead of relying on a generic GST calendar.
