Before charging a large purchase to earn a credit-card bonus, verify the exact offer terms, the qualifying-period start date, the definition of an eligible purchase, every exclusion, and what happens after a return or credit. Count only the amount charged to the eligible card and accepted under that offer. If the purchase is borderline, obtain an answer from the issuer before relying on it.
Offers are account- and channel-specific. The examples below illustrate how issuer language works; they do not replace the terms shown for your card.

Why a normal purchase may not satisfy a bonus
A welcome offer usually has a spending threshold and a deadline, but the threshold is not simply a total of every line on your statement. The offer may define qualifying or eligible purchases and remove fees, interest, cash-like transactions, person-to-person transfers, gift cards, returned goods, or other categories. A payment can also be difficult for an issuer to identify when a third party processes it.

The practical rule is simple: preserve the offer as presented, read its linked conditions, check the card agreement and rewards rules, and maintain a transaction ledger. The offer’s own wording controls when it differs from a general rewards page or a generic product advertisement.

Collect the documents that actually govern your account
Save the offer exactly as shown
Download or print the offer page and its full terms before applying or making the purchase. Record the date, application channel, card product, and any personalized language or invitation code. A public product page can differ from an offer displayed after a sign-in, in an email, or through a partner. Retaining the page gives you the wording that was presented to you if the terms later change.
Read the card agreement and rewards rules
Look for the cardmember agreement, pricing and fee disclosures, and the rewards-program terms. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau agreement database can help locate an issuer’s published agreement, but the Bureau warns that database records may not match a public marketing offer and are not specific to an individual account. Under federal law, your issuer must provide a copy of your agreement upon request. Ask the issuer for the account-specific version when the database copy is unavailable or unclear.
Separate offer language from general rewards language
A rewards page may describe transactions that do not earn ordinary points, while a welcome offer may have a different list. Treat each document as applying only within its stated scope. For example, a general rewards page can inform your questions without proving that every welcome offer from that issuer uses identical exclusions.

Decode the spending requirement before you buy
| Term to locate | What to write down | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Threshold | Exact dollar amount and currency | Fees, returns, or ineligible charges may not contribute to this figure. |
| Qualifying period | Number of days or months | The deadline is not necessarily tied to card delivery. |
| Clock start | Account opening, approval, activation, or another defined event | Using the wrong start date can shorten your usable window. |
| Eligible-purchase definition | Terms such as eligible purchases, qualifying purchases, or net purchases | This is the filter applied to each transaction. |
| Reward delivery | Reward type, timing, and account conditions | Meeting the spend does not always mean immediate delivery. |
Confirm the clock’s start date
Do not infer the start date from an approval email, card-arrival date, or activation date. Follow the sentence in the offer that defines when the period begins. One American Express Blue Business Cash offer example measures the first 12 months from account opening and requires $15,000 in eligible purchases. That is an example of one offer, not a standard threshold or a universal American Express rule.
Set an internal deadline
Use a buffer before the stated deadline. Transactions can post after the purchase date, a return can reduce your qualifying total, and a merchant may submit a corrected amount. A buffer is especially important when a purchase is split, routed through a marketplace, or made near the end of the qualifying period.

Identify what counts as an eligible purchase
Start with the positive definition
Find the clause that says what an eligible purchase is and whether the issuer uses the net amount after credits. Check whether the offer applies to purchases made by authorized users, purchases in a particular currency, or transactions made after enrollment. Do not assume that an ordinary retail label guarantees eligibility; the issuer generally relies on the transaction data supplied by the merchant.
Check common exclusion categories
Exclusions vary by offer. Search the terms for each of these expressions and then read the surrounding definitions:
- Fees, interest, late charges, and other account charges.
- Cash advances, balance transfers, convenience checks, and account-funding transactions.
- Cash equivalents, including some money orders, travelers checks, gambling transactions, or similar cash-like purchases.
- Gift cards, prepaid cards, and reloads.
- Person-to-person payments or money transfers.
- Returned, cancelled, or refunded goods and services.
- Purchases submitted through an intermediary, reseller, payment account, delivery platform, or mobile reader.
- Any category expressly excluded by the offer or rewards program.
The list is not universal. A category omitted from one offer may be excluded by another, so use it as a search checklist rather than a substitute for the terms.
Issuer examples are illustrations, not promises
The cited American Express Blue Business Cash example excludes fees and interest, travelers checks, prepaid-card purchases or reloads, gift cards, person-to-person payments, and cash equivalents. It also subtracts returns and other credits from eligible purchases. Read the complete offer at American Express offer terms; the $15,000 and 12-month figures belong only to that displayed example.
On its Sapphire Reserve rewards page, Chase says certain balance transfers, cash advances, cash-like transactions, person-to-person money transfers, account-funding transactions, checks, interest, and fees do not earn rewards. Those are rewards-program statements on that page, not proof that every Chase welcome offer or another issuer uses the same treatment. See the page at Chase Sapphire Reserve credit-card terms and then check the specific offer attached to your account.

Examine how the merchant will submit the charge
Direct billing is easier to verify
A merchant that bills the card directly usually supplies a recognizable merchant name and transaction category. Keep the receipt, invoice, and final card charge so you can match the amount and date in your ledger.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Intermediaries can change the transaction data
Marketplaces, resellers, delivery services, mobile card readers, digital wallets, and payment accounts may submit a transaction under their own name or category. American Express general offer terms state that the issuer relies on merchant-provided transaction information and that transactions routed through intermediaries may not be recognized; only the portion charged to the enrolled card can qualify. Review the details at American Express Offers terms. If the purchase is important to reaching the threshold, ask the issuer whether that merchant arrangement is recognized before paying.
Handle split payments, foreign currency, and credits correctly
Count only the eligible-card portion
If a $2,000 invoice is paid with $1,200 on the eligible card and $800 by bank transfer, the maximum amount that can qualify is the $1,200 card charge, subject to all other terms. A receipt showing the full invoice does not turn the non-card portion into qualifying spend.
Subtract returns and cancellations
A return, cancellation, chargeback, or statement credit can reduce net qualifying spend. If a reward was issued and the underlying purchase is later reversed, the issuer may reverse the reward or deduct points. Keep documentation for both the original charge and the credit, and recalculate your running total after each adjustment.
Check currency conversion language
For a foreign-currency purchase, read the conversion clause and identify which amount is used. The American Express general terms say related currency-conversion fees do not count toward minimum spend. That treatment must not be generalized to another issuer without checking its terms.

Verify the reward and account conditions
Record the form and delivery window
Write down whether the reward is points, miles, a statement credit, or another benefit; when it should appear; and whether a separate redemption is required. In the cited American Express example, a statement credit is expected within 8–12 weeks after reaching the threshold, provided the account is not past due or cancelled. This fulfillment statement applies to that example only.
Look for continuing conditions
Check whether the account must remain open and current, whether payments must be made on time, and whether eligibility restrictions apply because you previously held the product or received a similar bonus. Note any annual fee and its posting date. These conditions affect the offer’s net value even when they do not change the purchase total.
Retain evidence of the promise
Keep the saved offer, agreement, receipts, screenshots of enrollment, and issuer messages until the reward posts and any return period has ended. The CFPB has warned that rewards programs can raise unfairness or deception concerns when earned rewards are devalued, revoked under buried or vague conditions, or deducted without the corresponding benefit. Its discussion is illustrative and does not establish that a particular offer violates the law; preserving the terms makes a factual review possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a qualifying-spend ledger
A ledger prevents a headline total from hiding an excluded or reversed transaction. Use one row for each charge and update it when the transaction posts, changes, or receives a credit.
| Column | Entry to make |
|---|---|
| Transaction date | Date you authorized the purchase. |
| Posting date | Date shown by the issuer; this helps identify transactions near the deadline. |
| Merchant and channel | Direct merchant, marketplace, wallet, reseller, or other processor. |
| Gross charge | Original amount submitted to the card. |
| Eligible-card portion | Amount actually charged to the enrolled card after split tender. |
| Credits or returns | Refunds, cancellations, chargebacks, or statement credits. |
| Eligible amount | Amount remaining after applying the offer’s exclusions. |
| Evidence | Receipt, invoice, confirmation email, or issuer message. |
| Status | Clearly eligible, excluded, uncertain, or reversed. |
For an illustrative ledger, a $1,500 direct purchase paid entirely with the eligible card could show $1,500 as the eligible amount, while a $2,000 invoice with $1,200 charged to that card would show $1,200 before any exclusion review. Label uncertain transactions rather than silently counting them.

Compare offers on more than the headline bonus
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Spend hurdle | What is the minimum, how long is the period, and when does the clock start? |
| Purchase fit | Do your planned, ordinary expenses meet the exact eligible-purchase definition? |
| Exclusions and reversal risk | Could fees, cash-like categories, split tender, intermediaries, returns, or credits remove much of the total? |
| Reward form and value | Are the rewards points, miles, or a statement credit, and what redemption limits or delivery delay apply? |
| Cost and account conditions | What annual fee, payment requirement, account-status condition, or eligibility restriction applies? |
| Evidence quality | Do the saved terms match your actual offer, or do you need written clarification from the issuer? |
Evaluate the reward’s realistic value after annual fees and the effort or risk of reaching the threshold. Never create spending solely to chase a bonus if the purchases are not already needed and affordable within the billing terms.
Ask the issuer before relying on a borderline purchase
Use the phone number on the card or a secure message channel. Give the representative the exact merchant, purchase method, amount, date, and offer name. Ask focused questions:
- Does this merchant and transaction type qualify as an eligible purchase for my specific offer?
- If the merchant uses a marketplace, wallet, reseller, or payment processor, whose transaction record will determine eligibility?
- Will only the amount charged to this card count when I use split tender?
- How will a return, cancellation, or statement credit affect the qualifying total or an already issued reward?
- What event starts my qualifying period, and what date is the final eligible day?
- When should the reward post, and must the account remain open and current?
Save the date, channel, and representative’s explanation. A general answer about the card is less useful than confirmation tied to the offer attached to your account.

Reconcile the statement first
Match the merchant receipt to the posted transaction, then check whether the amount changed, split, or received a credit. Confirm that the charge posted before the qualifying deadline and that the eligible-card portion is the amount you are counting.
Review the exclusion language
Search the offer for the transaction category, processor name, and terms such as cash equivalent, account funding, person-to-person, fee, or net purchase. A transaction that looks like retail spending can still be excluded by its payment coding or merchant submission.
Request a transaction-level review
Contact the issuer with the offer copy, transaction date, amount, merchant descriptor, and receipts. Ask which term caused the exclusion and request the explanation in writing. Do not make replacement spending until you know whether the original charge is ineligible; otherwise you may exceed your budget or lose the ability to return the original item.
Use regulator information as context, not as a substitute for your terms
The CFPB states in its 2024 circular: The CFPB is issuing this circular to underscore that the CFPA’s prohibition on unfair or deceptive acts or practices applies to the design, marketing, and administration of credit card rewards programs.
Read the full Consumer Financial Protection Circular 2024-07 for the agency’s examples and scope. Regulatory guidance can explain why clear, accessible conditions matter, but it does not determine whether your individual transaction qualifies. The issuer’s offer and account-specific agreement remain the documents to apply to your purchase.
