In Google Pay, open your profile picture, select AutoPay, and review the Live, Pending, or Completed tabs. Open a live mandate to choose Pause autopay or Cancel autopay, then enter your UPI PIN and confirm that the status changed. These menu names are specific to Google Pay; another UPI app may place the same controls under AutoPay, mandates, or bank-account management.
What a UPI AutoPay mandate does
A UPI AutoPay mandate is an authorization that lets a merchant request recurring debits from a linked bank account. It can be used for mobile and electricity bills, equated monthly instalments (EMIs), insurance, mutual-fund contributions, subscriptions, and other scheduled merchant payments. The mandate is a digital instruction, not a physical card, device, or accessory.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
When you approve one, the instruction normally records the merchant, a unique mandate number, its start and end dates, the recurrence pattern, and the debit amount or debit rules. The mandate and the service behind it are separate. Revoking the payment instruction prevents future debits under that instruction, but it does not automatically cancel a streaming plan, insurance policy, loan, or other contract with the merchant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore taking action, identify which bank account is linked and whether the payment is essential. A paused or revoked instruction may stop an automatic payment, but the provider can still expect you to pay manually or arrange another approved method.

Check a mandate in Google Pay
- Open Google Pay on the phone where you use the relevant UPI account.
- Tap your profile picture, then select AutoPay.
- Review the status tabs. Use Live for approved mandates that have not yet been executed, Pending for requests that still need an action, and Completed for mandates that were executed, expired, or revoked.
- Tap the mandate you want to investigate and read its details before changing anything.
A pending request is not the same as an active recurring debit. It is awaiting an approval or other action, so it should not be treated as a live instruction simply because it appears in the AutoPay area. If you do not recognize a pending request, do not approve it just to remove it from view; use the options shown in the app and check with the merchant or bank if necessary.
Details to verify before you act
- Merchant: Confirm that the business name matches a bill, subscription, investment, policy, or loan you recognize.
- Unique AutoPay number: Keep this identifier if you need to discuss the instruction with the app, bank, or merchant.
- Start and end dates: Check whether the authorization is currently within its validity period.
- Frequency: Look for the scheduled interval, such as monthly or another recurring cycle.
- Debit details: Confirm the amount, maximum amount, or other debit rule shown for that mandate.
- Linked account: Make sure the bank account displayed is the one you expect the merchant to use.
Compare these fields with the merchant’s invoice, account page, policy schedule, or loan statement. An unfamiliar merchant name can sometimes reflect a payment processor, so check the underlying service before cancelling a mandate you may still need.
Save the mandate number and the dates you reviewed it. Those details help support teams distinguish a live authorization from a historical record or a debit that has already been submitted.
What Live, Pending, and Completed mean
| Status | Meaning in Google Pay | What you can generally do |
|---|---|---|
| Live | An approved mandate that has not yet been executed. | Open it to inspect details, pause it temporarily, or cancel it. |
| Pending | A request that still needs action; it is not an active recurring debit. | Review the request and decide whether to approve or reject it, according to the options shown. |
| Completed | A mandate that has been executed, expired, or revoked. | Use it as a history record; a completed entry is not a live instruction to pause. |
The exact labels and grouping can differ in other UPI apps. Look for the app’s AutoPay, mandate, or bank-account section rather than assuming every app uses Google Pay’s terminology.
If the mandate is missing
Update the app when AutoPay is absent
If the AutoPay section itself is missing in Google Pay, update the app and sign in with the UPI profile associated with the bank account. Google Pay says a newly created request can take up to 24 hours to appear. If it is still absent after that period, contact Google Pay support.
A delay in displaying a request is different from a cancellation. Until you have confirmed the mandate’s status with the originating app, merchant, or bank, continue checking the account for the expected debit and keep relevant notifications.
Check the app that created the instruction
A mandate may have been approved in a different UPI app. Open that app and look for its AutoPay, mandates, or linked-bank-account area. Also check the merchant’s account page or billing settings for the service that requested the authorization.

Do not assume that one empty list proves there is no mandate
NPCI’s circular NPCI/UPI/OC-223/2025-26, dated 7 October 2025, describes an enhancement for viewing active UPI AutoPay mandates in an app of the user’s choice and porting mandates between UPI apps. The feature is conditional: the bank, UPI app, and merchant must support it. Google Pay also says its cross-app list includes only active mandates from merchants that support the feature. Therefore, an instruction missing from one app is not conclusive evidence that no mandate exists.
If a payment is unexpected and you cannot locate its mandate, contact the originating merchant and the bank linked to UPI. Provide the transaction date, amount, merchant descriptor, and any mandate number shown in your bank statement or payment notification. Ask which app or bank account holds the active instruction before attempting another change.
Pause versus cancel: choose the right action
| Action | Best use | Effect on the mandate | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pause autopay | A planned, temporary interruption, such as a short suspension of a service. | Stops the mandate for the pause period you specify; you select a start and end date. | It does not permanently revoke the authorization or end the merchant contract. |
| Cancel autopay | You no longer want this authorization to be used. | Revokes the mandate so the merchant cannot debit the account under that instruction after revocation. | It does not automatically cancel a subscription, policy, loan, or other service agreement. |
Use pause when you expect the recurring instruction to resume on a known date. Use cancellation when the authorization should not be used again. If you are ending the underlying service, cancel that service with the merchant as well; otherwise the merchant may continue to show an unpaid balance even though the UPI instruction is revoked.
How to pause a live mandate in Google Pay
- Tap your profile picture in Google Pay.
- Select AutoPay, then open the Live tab.
- Tap the mandate you want to suspend.
- Choose Pause autopay.
- Set the pause start date and end date shown by the app.
- Enter your UPI PIN to authorize the change.
- Return to the mandate’s details and confirm that the status or pause information reflects the dates you selected.
Record the end date if the payment is tied to a bill or service you still need later. A pause is date-based, so it should not be treated as a permanent opt-out. Check the mandate again before the next expected billing cycle if the service is important.

- Tap your profile picture, choose AutoPay, and open Live.
- Select the relevant mandate and review the merchant and debit details one more time.
- Tap Cancel autopay.
- Enter your UPI PIN when prompted.
- Reopen the mandate or refresh the Live list and verify that the cancellation or revoked status is shown.
Google Pay states that, after revocation, the merchant cannot debit the account under that mandate. A debit already submitted or completed before revocation is a separate transaction; review your bank statement and contact the merchant or bank if you need to dispute a payment that occurred before the cancellation took effect.
Entering the UPI PIN authorizes the action you selected. Never disclose the PIN to a merchant, caller, or supposed support representative, and do not enter it on a screen reached through an unsolicited link.
Stop the underlying subscription or loan separately
Revoking AutoPay changes the payment authorization, not the commercial relationship. For a subscription, use the merchant’s cancellation controls or contact its support team. Ask for written confirmation of the service end date and any final amount due. For insurance, investments, utilities, or other recurring bills, confirm how the provider handles a missed or manually paid instalment.

Loan-related mandates require extra care. Google Pay says a loan mandate cannot be cancelled through Google Pay; contact the lender or other merchant for its cancellation instructions. Do not assume that removing the mandate erases the loan obligation. The lender may require another repayment method or may treat a missed debit as late unless you arrange an alternative in advance.

Troubleshoot a failed cancellation
The cancellation option is missing
- Confirm that you opened the mandate under Live, not Pending or Completed.
- Check whether the instruction is loan-related; those cancellations must be handled with the merchant.
- Open the app that originally approved the mandate if it is not listed in Google Pay.
- Update Google Pay if the AutoPay area or controls are not displayed.
- Use the mandate number and merchant name when contacting support.
An error appears after you submit the request
Google Pay says the linked bank account must be active for cancellation. Check with the bank if the account is dormant, blocked, closed, or otherwise inactive, then retry once the account is usable. Keep the app open until the confirmation screen appears and verify the resulting status afterward.
The mandate still appears after cancellation
Refresh the AutoPay list and open the entry again. A record may remain in history even after it has been revoked, because Google Pay places executed, expired, and revoked items under Completed. The important check is whether it remains an actionable live mandate, not whether every historical record disappears.
If the entry remains under Live or the merchant continues to report an active instruction, contact Google Pay, the linked bank, and the merchant with the unique mandate number and cancellation date. Do not create a second mandate while the status is unclear.
Understand debit notifications and exceptions
Google Pay says it notifies users within 24 hours before a bank debit. This is Google Pay’s guidance and should not be treated as a universal guarantee for every UPI app or bank. Google Pay identifies automatic top-ups for FASTag and NCMC cards as exceptions to that 24-hour notification guidance.
Keep transaction alerts enabled with both your bank and UPI app. Compare the alert with the merchant, amount, and mandate details. If an alert does not match any authorization you recognize, do not approve a new request merely to make the notification go away; investigate through the app, bank, and merchant instead.
Cross-app viewing and portability under NPCI’s 2025 enhancement
NPCI’s circular NPCI/UPI/OC-223/2025-26, issued on 7 October 2025, instructs payer banks and UPI apps to support lifecycle management—including viewing and porting—in Manage Bank accounts or a dedicated UPI Autopay section. The circular states:

Porting does not guarantee that every mandate will be visible everywhere. Merchant participation and technical support remain necessary. When a mandate matters urgently, verify it in the app where it was created and with the merchant or bank rather than relying on a cross-app list alone.

A practical safety checklist
- Open the mandate details before approving, pausing, or cancelling.
- Match the merchant and debit rule with an invoice, contract, or account you recognize.
- Never share your UPI PIN with a merchant, caller, or support representative; enter it only on the authenticated UPI screen for the action you initiated.
- Take note of the unique AutoPay number and the date you changed the mandate.
- After a pause or cancellation, verify the status and watch the next bank statement.
- Cancel the merchant service separately when you are ending the subscription or agreement.
- For loans, contact the lender before changing the mandate and arrange an accepted repayment method.
- If a mandate is missing, check the originating app and merchant before concluding that it does not exist.
When to contact support
Contact Google Pay support if a new mandate has not appeared after 24 hours despite an updated app, or if the app does not provide the expected control for a non-loan, live mandate. Contact the linked bank when the account is inactive or a bank-side error prevents the request. Contact the merchant for loan mandates, subscription cancellation, clarification of an unfamiliar descriptor, or confirmation that it has stopped submitting debit requests.
Give support the exact merchant name, unique mandate number, relevant dates, amount, linked bank account, and screenshots that do not expose your UPI PIN or full account credentials. This information lets the recipient distinguish a pending request, a live authorization, a historical entry, and a debit that was already processed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel a pending AutoPay request?
Pending means the request still needs action; it is not a live recurring debit. Open it and use the option Google Pay presents for that request. If the option is unclear or the request is unfamiliar, contact the merchant or bank rather than approving it.
Will cancelling AutoPay cancel my subscription?
No. Cancellation revokes the UPI instruction so the merchant cannot debit under that mandate. Cancel the subscription or other service separately and confirm any final amount due.

How long can a new mandate take to appear?
Google Pay says a new request can take up to 24 hours to appear. Update the app first; if it is still absent after that period, contact Google Pay support and check the originating app.
Does a mandate have to appear in every UPI app?
No. NPCI’s cross-app viewing and porting enhancement depends on support from the payer bank, UPI app, and merchant. Google Pay’s cross-app list includes only active mandates from participating merchants.
What if cancellation fails with an error?
The linked bank account must be active for cancellation in Google Pay. Resolve inactivity or other account restrictions with the bank, then retry and verify the resulting status.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find a recurring UPI AutoPay mandate?
In Google Pay, tap your profile picture, choose AutoPay, and review Live, Pending, and Completed. Open a mandate to see its merchant, unique number, dates, frequency, and debit details.
What is the difference between pausing and cancelling AutoPay?
Pause is temporary and requires a start and end date. Cancel revokes the authorization so the merchant cannot debit under it again. Neither action automatically ends the underlying subscription, policy, or loan.
Can Google Pay cancel a loan mandate?
Google Pay says loan-related mandates cannot be cancelled through Google Pay. Contact the lender or merchant for instructions and arrange another accepted repayment method.
Why is my mandate missing?
A new Google Pay request can take up to 24 hours to appear. Update the app, check the app where the mandate was created, and remember that cross-app visibility depends on bank, app, and merchant support.

The Bottom Line
Start in your UPI app’s AutoPay or mandate section, distinguish Live from Pending and Completed, and verify the merchant, dates, frequency, amount, and linked account. In Google Pay, pause or cancel a live mandate with your UPI PIN, then confirm the status. Separately end the merchant service, and contact the lender, bank, or app support when a loan, inactive account, missing mandate, or cross-app limitation prevents the change.
