The reliable way to check a self-custody XRP lockup is to inspect the account’s on-ledger Escrow object in XRPL Explorer, XRPL Scan or XRP Toolkit. Note its FinishAfter, CancelAfter, amount, destination and any Condition. A time-only escrow becomes finishable at the first validated ledger close at or after FinishAfter—usually within about five seconds of that protocol time—but the XRP is not spendable until an eligible party submits and validates an EscrowFinish transaction.
If an exchange says your XRP is locked or withdrawals are suspended, that may be an exchange-level hold rather than an XRPL Escrow object. Its release date depends on that platform’s policy, compliance review or product terms, not on the ledger fields described here.

What an XRP lockup can mean
“Locked XRP” describes several different situations. The correct way to estimate availability depends on who controls the account and where the restriction is recorded.

An XRPL Escrow object moves XRP—or supported tokens—into a ledger-controlled arrangement. The object records the sender, destination, amount and release rules. Anyone can read those fields from the public ledger, but only an eligible signer can complete or cancel the escrow.

Exchange withdrawal hold
An exchange can mark a balance as locked, suspend withdrawals, impose a cooling-off period or hold funds for compliance reasons without creating a personal Escrow object on the XRPL. The exchange’s own account, internal ledger and terms determine the date. Without the exchange name and the reason shown in its notice, no XRPL timestamp can produce an exact withdrawal estimate.
Corporate or supply-management escrow
Ripple’s public supply-management escrows are not a lock on an individual’s wallet. Ripple said in 2017 that it had locked 55 billion XRP—55% of the total possible supply—into escrows, with up to one billion XRP released monthly and unused XRP returned to new escrow arrangements. Ripple’s current facts page reports 32,600,000,000 XRP placed in escrow, 37,656,053,914 XRP held and 62,329,587,596 XRP distributed, with those figures stated as of June 30, 2026. Those are Ripple’s holdings and distribution figures, not the status of your exchange balance or personal account.
Where to inspect an XRPL escrow
Use at least one public ledger view for verification and, when you need to sign a transaction, a compatible personal wallet.
| Method | Data authority | Can sign Finish or Cancel? | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XRPL Explorer | Direct XRPL ledger data | No; read-only inspection | Independent confirmation of objects and timestamps | Does not authorize a release transaction |
| XRPL Scan | Direct XRPL ledger data | No; read-only inspection | Cross-checking account and escrow fields | Read-only; signing must occur elsewhere |
| XRP Toolkit | Ledger data presented for a connected wallet | Yes, when the wallet and escrow are eligible | Active Escrows table and guided Finish or Cancel action | Requires control of a compatible personal wallet |
| Exchange account page | That exchange’s internal records and policy | Not applicable to your personal escrow | Checking a platform withdrawal hold | Its date cannot be inferred from XRPL Escrow fields |
Ripple’s XRPL resource list includes XRPL Explorer and XRPL Scan. XRP Toolkit’s tutorial says connected wallets expose an Active Escrows table. For signing, the tutorial recommends a compatible personal wallet and lists Ledger as one compatible device; an exchange address typically cannot finish an escrow for you.
Step-by-step: check a time-locked XRP escrow
- Identify the custody arrangement. Determine whether you control an XRPL account and its signing keys. If the XRP appears only in an exchange portfolio, first read the exchange’s withdrawal-status message; do not assume a personal Escrow object exists.
- Copy the account address carefully. Use the public XRPL account address associated with the wallet that created or receives the escrow. Check every character before searching; a look-alike address can lead to a completely different account.
- Open a ledger explorer or wallet interface. Search the address in XRPL Explorer or XRPL Scan, or connect the wallet to XRP Toolkit and open Active Escrows. A wallet view is convenient, while an explorer gives an independent, read-only confirmation.
- Open each Escrow object. Record the amount and asset, sender, destination, object identifier,
FinishAfter,CancelAfterand anyCondition. If several escrows exist, evaluate them separately; one object’s date does not unlock another. - Convert ledger time to UTC. XRPL timestamps are protocol times, not a local-calendar promise. Convert the displayed value to UTC, then to your local zone if helpful. Keep the UTC value in your notes so daylight-saving changes do not create an apparent discrepancy.
- Compare both time limits.
FinishAfteris the earliest time at which a time lock can be completed.CancelAfteris the expiry or cancellation time. For token escrows,CancelAfteris mandatory. If expiry occurs first, the escrow is not finishable. - Check whether a condition exists. A populated
Conditionmeans a valid cryptographic fulfillment is required. A time-only escrow has no such requirement. A combination escrow can require both the time and the correct fulfillment. - Check the current state. Before
FinishAfter, a time-based object is held. Once the time has passed and a ledger has closed, it is ready if all other rules are met. AfterCancelAfterpasses first, it is expired and can be canceled under the documented rules. - Use the wallet’s action control only after verifying the fields. In XRP Toolkit, the action column shows Finish or Cancel when the escrow is releasable. Confirm the destination, amount and condition before signing; never approve a transaction solely because a date has arrived.
- Wait for validation and recheck the balance. The transaction must be accepted into a validated ledger. After validation, refresh the account and confirm that the escrow object has been removed or its state changed and that the resulting balance is where you expect it.
How FinishAfter determines the earliest availability
For a time-only escrow, use this estimate:
earliest finishable time ≈ FinishAfter, rounded to the first validated ledger close at or after that time
The timestamp is a threshold, not an automatic transfer. XRPL resolves timed releases against ledger close times, so the practical result can vary by about five seconds. A release at 12:00:00 UTC might therefore become eligible at the first validated close just after that instant rather than at the exact wall-clock second.
Three separate events are easy to confuse:
- The lock time arrives. The network reaches the
FinishAfterthreshold. - The escrow becomes finishable. A validated ledger closes at or after the threshold, and no earlier expiry or condition blocks completion.
- The XRP becomes spendable. An eligible party submits an
EscrowFinish, it is validated, and the resulting balance is credited to the destination account.
Only the third event puts the XRP into a normal spendable balance. If nobody submits EscrowFinish, the funds can remain in escrow after the time has passed.

Destination
The destination is the account intended to receive funds when the escrow is finished. A successful finish does not redirect the funds to whichever wallet happens to sign; the object’s rules control the destination.
FinishAfter
This is the earliest protocol time for a time lock. It does not guarantee that a finish transaction has already been submitted or that your wallet interface will update at the exact displayed second.
CancelAfter
This is the cancellation deadline. If it passes before a valid finish, the escrow becomes expired and the permitted path is EscrowCancel, which returns funds to the sender under XRPL’s documented rules. For token escrows, this field is required.

Condition
This optional field contains a cryptographic condition. The finisher must provide the matching fulfillment, in addition to satisfying any time requirement. A condition can therefore make an escrow unavailable even after FinishAfter.
State
“Held” indicates that the object is still waiting for its rules to be met. “Ready” describes a time-only escrow that can be finished after the required ledger close. “Expired” means the cancellation path applies because CancelAfter was reached first.
Conditional and combination escrows
A condition changes the answer from “wait until this date” to “wait until this date and supply the correct proof.” The fulfillment is a cryptographic value generated for that condition; guessing, editing or omitting it will not work.
- Time-only: Finish becomes possible after
FinishAfter, provided it has not expired. - Condition-only: The required fulfillment controls completion; there may be no time threshold to calculate.
- Time plus condition: Both the time threshold and valid fulfillment must be present.
- Expired: If
CancelAfterpassed first, submit the cancellation route permitted by the escrow rules rather than attempting to finish.
If you did not create the condition or do not have the expected fulfillment, contact the party that created the escrow before signing anything. A wallet cannot manufacture a valid fulfillment from the displayed date.
Token escrow requirements and restrictions
The XRPL TokenEscrow amendment supports Trust Line Tokens and Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs), but token rules add checks that do not apply to ordinary XRP.

Trust Line Tokens
The issuer must have the Allow Trust Line Locking flag enabled. Authorization can also be required before creation, completion or cancellation, depending on the issuer’s settings and the account’s trust-line status.
Multi-Purpose Tokens
An MPT issuer must enable both Can Escrow and Can Transfer. If either permission is absent, a date passing does not make the token transferable through the escrow.
Freeze and lock controls
A deep-frozen or otherwise locked token cannot be finished by its holder. Cancellation may still be possible under the documented conditions, but that is a separate transaction path and should not be assumed to return funds to the destination.
Issuer authorization
When a token requires authorization, inspect the issuer and the relevant trust-line or MPT permissions before estimating availability. A wallet may show a date while the issuer’s controls still prevent completion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why an escrow is still unavailable after the date
The timestamp has not reached a validated ledger close
The displayed calendar time can arrive between ledger closes. Wait for the next validated close, allowing roughly five seconds of protocol timing variance, then refresh the object.
No one submitted EscrowFinish
XRPL does not automatically move the funds merely because FinishAfter passed. Submit the finish transaction from an eligible personal wallet and wait for validation.
CancelAfter won the race
If expiry was reached first, the object is no longer finishable. Use EscrowCancel when the rules permit it; the funds follow the documented return-to-sender behavior.

Token permissions block completion
Review the issuer’s trust-line-locking, MPT escrow and transfer permissions, plus any authorization status. A freeze or deep freeze can prevent a holder from finishing even when the time condition is satisfied.
The account is controlled by an exchange
An exchange-controlled address generally cannot be operated by your personal wallet. Follow the platform’s withdrawal-status instructions and support process; an explorer can show ledger activity but cannot override the exchange’s internal hold.
The wallet interface is stale
Compare the wallet display with a second explorer, reconnect the wallet and verify the network and account address. Do not sign a transaction until the independent ledger view matches the wallet’s amount and destination.

Finishing an escrow safely
- Verify the network and address. Ensure the wallet is connected to the XRPL network and that the account address matches the escrow record.
- Verify eligibility. Confirm the state is ready, the finish time has passed, expiry has not passed, and any condition or token authorization is satisfied.
- Review the destination and amount. Compare the transaction preview with the Escrow object. Stop if the destination, asset, amount or fee differs unexpectedly.
- Use a compatible personal signer. XRP Toolkit’s tutorial identifies Ledger as one compatible device. Keep recovery phrases offline and never enter them into a website or send them to support.
- Sign and submit
EscrowFinish. Approve only the transaction you have independently checked. - Wait for validated status. A submitted transaction is not final until included in a validated ledger. Save the transaction ID and verify it in an explorer.
- Recheck the resulting account. Confirm the escrow was finished and the destination balance reflects the transfer, less any applicable transaction fee.
Estimating an exchange withdrawal date
There is no universal XRPL formula for an exchange lock. Ask the platform which category applies:
- pending deposit confirmations;
- new-address or password-change cooldown;
- identity or compliance review;
- account risk or fraud hold;
- maintenance or network suspension;
- staking, lending or another product with its own redemption period.
Record the exact status text, the time the hold began, the stated time zone and whether the notice gives a review deadline or only an estimate. If the platform supplies a transaction hash, inspect that hash on an explorer; if no on-chain transaction exists, the restriction is likely internal. Do not infer a release time from a personal escrow’s FinishAfter unless the exchange explicitly identifies that escrow as the reason for the hold.
Ripple’s escrow figures versus your withdrawal
Ripple’s 2017 explanation concerned a company-level supply arrangement: “To provide additional predictability to the XRP supply, Ripple has locked 55 billion XRP (55% of the total possible supply) into a series of escrows.” It described releases of up to one billion XRP per month and the return of unused XRP to new escrows.
The later Ripple facts figures—32,600,000,000 XRP placed in escrow, 37,656,053,914 XRP held and 62,329,587,596 XRP distributed, data as of June 30, 2026—describe Ripple’s reported holdings and distribution. They do not indicate when XRP in your wallet or exchange account can be withdrawn. Use the account-specific Escrow object or the exchange’s own policy instead.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you control the private keys? If not, start with the custodian’s withdrawal policy.
- Can you find an Escrow object for the exact account? If not, an exchange lock may be internal.
- Have you recorded
FinishAfter,CancelAfter, amount, destination andCondition? - Did a validated ledger close occur after
FinishAfter? - Is the object ready, rather than expired?
- For tokens, are issuer permissions, authorization and transferability satisfied?
- Do you have the correct fulfillment for a conditional escrow?
- Are you using a compatible personal signer rather than an exchange address?
- Did you verify the transaction preview and final transaction ID independently?
Bottom line for timing
For a self-custody, time-only XRP escrow, treat FinishAfter as the earliest ledger time, allow about five seconds for ledger-close timing, and then account for the time needed to submit and validate EscrowFinish. A condition, token permission, freeze or earlier CancelAfter can change the result. For an exchange withdrawal hold, only the named exchange can establish the release date.
