“IPO mutual fund” is not a rule category. To find out whether you can withdraw, what an exit load could cost, and which NAV will be used, first identify the exact scheme, plan and units in your account. Then read that scheme’s latest Scheme Information Document (SID), Key Information Memorandum (KIM) and subsequent addenda. Confirm the transaction cut-off and submission procedure with the asset management company (AMC) or registrar before placing a request.
Why the phrase “IPO mutual fund” is not enough
An NFO (new fund offer) is the first subscription offer for a mutual-fund scheme. SEBI uses an initial public offering as an analogy for explaining an NFO, but an NFO is not a stock IPO and the analogy does not create stock-market-style rules. A fund launched through an NFO may be open-ended or close-ended, and its lock-in, exit-load schedule and redemption process are set by its own documents.

Two investments described casually as “IPO funds” can therefore have completely different withdrawal rights. The formal scheme name, plan (such as direct or regular), option (growth or income distribution), folio and unit allotment details determine which terms apply. If you only remember the launch label, do not guess from it; retrieve the formal name from your account statement or AMC account first.
The three rules you must keep separate
| Term | Question it answers | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Lock-in or duration | Is redemption restricted until a specified date or event? | Whether the scheme is open-ended or close-ended, the stated period, the date from which it is measured and any scheme-end date. |
| Exit load | If redemption is allowed, will a charge be deducted? | The percentage or formula, holding-period bands, free-redemption allowance, affected units and whether a switch-out is included. |
| Redemption or repurchase procedure | How do you submit a valid request and which NAV is used? | Permitted channel, authentication, cut-off time, applicable NAV, payment instructions and acknowledgement requirements. |
A lock-in can prevent an otherwise valid request from being processed. An exit load does not necessarily prevent redemption; it reduces the amount paid when the scheme’s conditions impose the charge. The procedure controls how and when a request is received and valued. Reading one term as if it answered all three questions is a common source of mistakes.

Where the binding information is published
Current SID
The Scheme Information Document contains the scheme’s features, investment structure, risks, expenses, load structure and redemption provisions. Use the version currently posted by the AMC or its official document portal, not an old comparison page or a launch article.
KIM and addenda
The Key Information Memorandum provides a shorter summary for investors. Later addenda can amend a load, duration, redemption route or other scheme attribute. Read the KIM together with every later addendum that applies to the scheme and plan. A current document can supersede a figure printed in the original NFO material.
AMC and registrar instructions
Operational details can change without changing the scheme’s basic objective. The AMC or registrar can confirm the current transaction channel, authentication method, cut-off, bank-registration requirements and status of a submitted request. Use the official contact route associated with your folio.
Step-by-step: check your own units
- Copy the exact identity from your account. Open the latest account statement, consolidated account statement or AMC account. Record the scheme name, plan, option, folio and, where shown, each allotment date and unit balance. Keep the wording and punctuation exactly as displayed.
- Find the current SID and KIM. On the AMC’s official website or document portal, locate documents for that exact scheme and plan. Check the document date and look for a separate list of addenda or amendments.
- Search the documents using the right terms. Search for “lock-in,” “duration,” “closed-ended,” “repurchase,” “redemption,” “exit load” and “load structure.” Read the surrounding paragraph and table; a search hit in a summary may point to a more detailed schedule elsewhere.
- Write down the eligibility rule. Record whether the scheme is open-ended or close-ended, the lock-in or duration, the starting point for counting it (for example, allotment), and the date on which your particular units become eligible. Do not assume all units in one folio share one allotment date.
- Capture the complete load schedule. Note each holding-period band, percentage, free portion, minimum or maximum if stated, and whether the charge applies to a redemption, a switch-out or both. Check whether the wording differs for units bought in separate instalments or through a systematic investment plan.
- Check the valuation and cut-off rules. Confirm the time by which the request must reach the permitted channel, the NAV rule tied to that cut-off, and any requirement that funds or documents be realised before the request is valued. AMFI’s NAV guidance states that cut-off rules apply to redemptions.
- Confirm the submission route. Verify whether you may submit through the AMC, registrar, an authorised transaction channel or another route allowed for your folio. Check authentication, bank details and any signature or identity requirement before sending the instruction.
- Obtain an acknowledgement. Save the request number, timestamp, channel confirmation and a copy of the form or electronic instruction. These records let you establish which cut-off and document version applied.
- Reconcile the result. When the transaction appears in your statement, compare units cancelled, NAV, exit-load deduction and net proceeds with the scheme’s stated formula. If the screen, statement and document conflict, ask the AMC or registrar for a written explanation before assuming the amount or date is correct.
How lock-in and scheme duration affect withdrawal
SEBI’s NFO guidance says certain NFOs, including close-ended funds, can have a predefined lock-in that restricts withdrawals. The exact restriction belongs to the named scheme. Some documents use “lock-in,” while others describe a duration or a fixed scheme-end date; read the operative clause rather than relying on the heading.

Open-ended schemes
An open-ended scheme generally offers ongoing purchase and redemption, subject to its documents, cut-off and any applicable load. That does not mean every unit is immediately free of restrictions. A scheme can still impose a unit-level holding condition or another stated limitation, so check your allotment date and the current schedule.
Close-ended schemes
AMFI states that units of close-ended schemes cannot be repurchased prematurely. If your scheme is close-ended, identify the specified maturity or permitted dealing arrangement in the current SID and AMC instructions. Do not submit a request expecting an ordinary open-ended redemption before that point.
When the lock-in date is unclear
- Check whether counting begins on allotment, the date of application, or another event defined in the document.
- For multiple purchases, calculate eligibility separately for each allotment when the schedule is unit-specific.
- Ask the AMC or registrar to confirm the eligible quantity and date in writing if the account display is ambiguous.
How exit load changes the amount you receive
AMFI describes the repurchase or redemption price as the price per unit at which the mutual fund buys back units on redemption or a switch-out, including exit load wherever applicable. Its guidance gives the calculation as:

For example, if the applicable NAV were ₹100 and the stated load were 0.25%, the price after load would be ₹99.75 per unit before any other applicable adjustments. This arithmetic illustrates the formula; your actual NAV and load must come from the transaction date and your scheme’s current schedule.
Questions to answer in the load table
- Is the percentage based on the value being redeemed or another measure specified by the scheme?
- Does the schedule vary by holding period, allotment date or unit class?
- Is a portion of units free of load?
- Does a switch to another plan or scheme count as a chargeable exit?
- Are systematic investment plan instalments treated according to their individual purchase dates?
- Has an addendum changed the percentage, period or calculation, and from what effective date?
AMFI notes that load changes apply prospectively. An amendment should therefore be read for its effective date and the units or transactions it covers; do not apply a new percentage to an earlier transaction without checking the stated transition rule.
An example of why you must read the exact schedule
An AMFI-hosted example SID for an ITI Mutual Fund scheme illustrates scheme-specific drafting. It allows 10% of units to be redeemed without load during the first 15 days, applies a 0.25% load to redemption above that free portion during the same period, and states nil thereafter. Those figures belong to that example document. They are not a standard NFO or industry-wide rule and must not be transferred to another scheme.

| Amount above that 10% during the first 15 days | 0.25% exit load |
| Redemption after the first 15 days | Nil exit load |
When reading your own schedule, look for the same level of detail: a free portion, a percentage on the excess, a precise time window and the treatment after that window. A headline such as “nil load” can conceal an earlier band or an exception.

Which NAV and cut-off apply?
The NAV used for a redemption is determined under the applicable rules and the scheme’s documents, not necessarily the NAV visible when you open the app. Confirm the cut-off time, the channel’s receipt timestamp and any condition about realisation of funds or valid documentation. A request received after the cut-off may receive the next applicable NAV under the current rules.
Before you submit
- Check the AMC or registrar’s current cut-off displayed for redemptions.
- Use the date and time shown in the acknowledgement, not the time you began filling a form.
- Confirm that bank details, folio status and authentication are valid so the request is not rejected or delayed.
- Ask which NAV rule applies if the instruction is submitted through an intermediary or non-standard channel.
How to estimate proceeds without confusing NAV and redemption price
- Determine the number of units the scheme will accept for redemption.
- Identify the applicable NAV under the confirmed cut-off rule.
- Read the load schedule for those particular units and the transaction type.
- Apply the scheme’s stated formula, including the exit load where applicable.
- Compare the resulting gross amount with any separately disclosed deductions or payment conditions.
Do not multiply units by a displayed NAV and treat that figure as guaranteed proceeds when an exit load applies. The redemption price incorporates the load, so the net amount can be lower even when the NAV has not changed between two screens.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Processing time and delayed payment
A SEBI investor FAQ page states that redemption or repurchase proceeds are to be dispatched within 10 working days after the request. The same page says an AMC is liable for interest in case of delay and refers to “15% at present.” Because the current legal status and any later amendments to those statements have not been independently established here, treat them as claims on that reviewed FAQ page rather than as a substitute for checking the operative rule. If payment is late, ask the AMC or registrar to identify the rule applied to your scheme and request the calculation of any amount due.
What to do when documents and account screens disagree
Different exit-load percentages
Save the SID, KIM and addendum versions showing the effective dates. Ask the AMC to state which version governs your units and transaction date. Do not select the lower percentage merely because it appears in an older document.

Redemption rejected as premature
Check close-ended status, lock-in wording, scheme maturity and the allotment date for the units selected. A close-ended scheme cannot be repurchased prematurely under AMFI’s guidance. If the account appears to show eligibility, request clarification before submitting another instruction.
Unexpected NAV
Compare the acknowledgement timestamp with the published cut-off and verify whether the channel was authorised and the request complete. Ask which applicable-NAV rule was used and whether a documentation or fund-realisation condition affected valuation.
Net amount lower than expected
Recalculate using the confirmed NAV, units accepted and exit-load schedule. Check whether a switch-out, partial redemption or units from different allotments triggered different bands. Ask for a transaction statement that itemises the load.
A record-keeping checklist
- Account statement showing scheme, plan, option, folio and units.
- Current SID and KIM, including every relevant addendum.
- Unit allotment dates and the lock-in or duration calculation.
- Exit-load table and the paragraph defining its calculation.
- AMC or registrar instructions for channel, authentication and cut-off.
- Redemption form or electronic confirmation with timestamp.
- Contract note or statement showing NAV, units cancelled, load and proceeds.
- Written explanations for any discrepancy or delay.
Useful comparison framework for two funds or two redemption routes
If you are comparing named schemes or deciding between submission channels, compare the same evidence for each rather than comparing labels.
| Axis | Evidence to place side by side |
|---|---|
| Redemption eligibility | Open-ended or close-ended status, stated lock-in or duration, and whether your units have cleared it. |
| Exit-load trigger | Percentage or formula, holding-period bands, free allowance and treatment of switches. |
| NAV and timing | Cut-off, applicable NAV rule and any fund-realisation condition. |
| Process and proof | Authorised route, authentication, acknowledgement, statement entry and escalation contact. |
| Document freshness | SID/KIM dates, addenda and the date the AMC or registrar confirmed the instructions. |
No fund-specific conclusion can be made without the scheme name, plan, unit or allotment details and current documents.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using “NFO” as a synonym for lock-in. An NFO is an initial offer; it does not by itself establish a lock-in or exit load.
- Copying a percentage from another fund. The 10%, 15-day and 0.25% example demonstrates why schedules cannot be generalised.
- Ignoring plan and option. Direct and regular plans, or different options, can have separate disclosures.
- Assuming a switch is free. AMFI’s redemption-price explanation includes switch-outs; check whether your schedule charges them.
- Relying on an old PDF. Addenda can change load or operational terms prospectively.
- Submitting just before cut-off without proof. Keep the receipt timestamp and request number.
- Treating a displayed NAV as the final payout. Apply the applicable exit load and the correct NAV rule.
Sources you should use for a final check
SEBI’s investor FAQ explains why investors should read the offer document and specifically examine scheme features, expenses, entry or exit loads and redemption procedure. SEBI’s NFO guidance explains the NFO concept and notes that certain NFOs, such as close-ended funds, can have predefined lock-ins. AMFI’s NAV and redemption-price guidance explains the exit-load formula, prospective load changes, close-ended premature-redemption limits and cut-off rules. The AMFI-hosted example SID shows how a single scheme can draft a detailed, time-banded load schedule.
Use those explanations to understand the vocabulary, but let the latest SID, KIM, addenda and AMC or registrar confirmation decide the terms for your units.
