To verify an interim dividend, first identify the exact company, ticker, share class and listing market. Then read the issuer’s latest investor-relations dividend notice or financial calendar, and confirm the dates against the relevant stock-exchange corporate-actions page or regulator disclosure. Use the ex-dividend date to judge the trading cutoff for entitlement, the record date to understand when the company checks its shareholder register, and the payment date to know when cash is scheduled to be distributed.
Start with the exact security
Dividend dates belong to a particular security and market, not to a company name in the abstract. Before searching, write down:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- the legal company name;
- the ticker symbol;
- the share class, such as ordinary shares or another listed class; and
- the exchange or listing market.
This prevents a common error: finding a dividend notice for the right company but the wrong share class, listing, currency or market. A company can have more than one listed security, and different markets can publish different corporate-action calendars. Treat the market shown on the issuer’s notice and the exchange notice as part of the date information.

| Date | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Ex-dividend date | The first trading date on which a buyer is generally not entitled to the declared dividend. | Use it as the trading cutoff. Investor.gov explains that buying on or after the ex-date generally means the seller receives the next dividend, subject to the applicable exchange rules. |
| Record date | The date the company closes its register to determine which shareholders are entitled. ASX describes this as 5:00 p.m. on the date the register is closed. | Use it to understand the company’s register check, but do not assume that simply buying on the record date creates entitlement. The ex-date and the market’s settlement rules determine the practical cutoff. |
| Payment or payable date | The date cash is paid to entitled shareholders. | Use it to estimate when the distribution should reach the payment channel recorded for your holding. ASX defines the payable date as the date the dividend is paid. |
Investor.gov summarizes the entitlement question this way: “To determine whether you should get a dividend, you need to look at two important dates.” Those dates are the ex-dividend date and the record date, interpreted under the rules of the relevant market.

Where to find an interim dividend’s dates
1. The issuer’s investor-relations announcement
Open the company’s latest investor-relations dividend announcement, results release or financial calendar. Issuers commonly publish the interim dividend amount together with the ex-dividend date, record date and payment or payable date. Some also show a book-closure period, currency, payment method and the announcement date.
For companies that maintain a dedicated dividend page, use the entry for the relevant financial year and dividend type. TCS, for example, directs investors to its Dividend Payment Details. Do not rely on an older annual report when a newer corporate-action notice is available; a later notice can amend a date.
2. The stock exchange’s corporate-actions calendar
Search the exchange on which the security trades and open its corporate-actions, dividend or listed-company announcements page. Exchange records are useful for checking that the issuer’s dates have been accepted and displayed for that listing. A calendar may label the fields differently, so match the field names carefully: ex-date, record date, book closure and payment date are not interchangeable.

3. A regulator disclosure
Where the exchange or issuer provides a regulatory filing, use it as a second official confirmation. SET rules require prompt disclosure of the board resolution and record date, and SET company notices can show the ex-dividend date, record date and payment date together. If the issuer’s page and the regulator filing differ, look for a subsequent amendment rather than choosing the date that appears most often on third-party calendars.
A step-by-step verification method
- Identify the security. Record the company, ticker, share class and listing market. If the ticker appears on more than one exchange, include the exchange code or market name.
- Find the latest issuer notice. On the investor-relations site, open the most recent notice that specifically describes the interim dividend. Confirm that it applies to the correct financial period and security.
- Extract every relevant field. Copy the dividend type and amount, ex-dividend date, record date, payment or payable date, and any book-closure dates. Also note the notice date and whether it says the timetable is subject to change.
- Check the exchange calendar. Search the listing market’s corporate-actions page for the same ticker and dividend. Compare each field separately rather than comparing only the payment date.
- Check a regulatory disclosure when available. Look for the board resolution, record-date announcement or amended filing. This is especially important when the issuer’s page has been updated without clearly showing the earlier version.
- Apply the ex-date to your trade. A purchase made on or after the ex-dividend date generally does not carry entitlement to that declared dividend; a purchase before it generally does, provided the trade and settlement satisfy the market’s rules. If you traded around the cutoff, retain the contract note and ask the broker how that market treats the transaction.
- Use the payment date for cash timing. The payable date is the company’s scheduled distribution date. Your broker, custodian or bank may show the credit at a different time of day or after its own processing, so investigate a missing credit only after checking the payment channel and the issuer’s latest notice.
How the dates fit together
The ex-dividend date is a trading-market label; the record date is an issuer-register label. They work together because the exchange’s settlement and entitlement rules determine which trades appear on the company’s register by the relevant cutoff. Investor.gov notes that the ex-date is set under exchange rules and is usually the record date or one business day earlier when the record date is not a business day. That is a general explanation, not a universal calendar formula: the exact relationship depends on the exchange and the type of dividend.

The payment date comes later because the company must complete the entitlement determination and payment process. It does not tell you whether a purchase qualifies; that question belongs to the ex-date, record date and applicable market rules.
Some markets publish a book-closure period. During that period, transfers may be closed for the purpose of determining entitlement. HKEX displays book closure alongside ex-date, record date and payment date. Treat book closure as a separate field: it describes a register or transfer restriction, not another name for the ex-dividend date.

| Market and notice | Ex-dividend date | Record date | Book closure | Payment date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HKEX 2026 calendar entry for an interim dividend | 1 September 2026 | 4 September 2026 | 3–4 September 2026 | 15 September 2026 |
| SET PR9 announcement | 24 August 2026 | 25 August 2026 | Not stated in the cited announcement | 7 September 2026 |
Reading the HKEX example
The HKEX 2026 entry places the ex-dividend date on 1 September, the record date on 4 September, and payment on 15 September. It also lists book closure on 3–4 September. A reader checking a trade should use 1 September as the displayed ex-date cutoff, while recognizing that the exchange’s own rules govern entitlement and that the book-closure period is a separate register detail.
Reading the SET PR9 example
The SET PR9 notice lists 24 August 2026 as the ex-dividend date, 25 August 2026 as the record date and 7 September 2026 as the payment date. The one-day spacing illustrates why the ex-date often appears immediately before the record date, but it should not be copied as a rule for every market or dividend.
What to do if you are buying or selling around the cutoff
Buying before the ex-dividend date
A purchase before the displayed ex-date generally carries the declared dividend, assuming the trade is valid under the market’s settlement and entitlement rules. Save the issuer notice and the exchange entry used for your decision, especially if the trade is close to the cutoff.

Buying on the ex-dividend date
A buyer on or after the ex-date generally is not entitled to that dividend. Investor.gov’s explanation is practical: the seller generally receives the next dividend when the purchase occurs on or after the ex-date. If your broker shows a different entitlement result, ask for the corporate-action rule applied to that specific trade.
Selling near the ex-dividend date
Do not decide entitlement from the record date alone. A sale, purchase or transfer near the cutoff can be affected by the exchange’s settlement convention and by whether the issuer later amends the timetable. Confirm the result with the exchange notice and your broker’s corporate-actions team.
Holding through the payment date
The payment date is when the company expects to distribute cash, not necessarily the moment your account will display it. Check whether the issuer pays through a registrar, custodian or broker, and verify that your payment instructions and account details are current.
How to resolve conflicting dates
When two pages disagree, compare the entries systematically:
- Market and jurisdiction: confirm that both pages concern the same listing and exchange. Settlement conventions differ by market.
- Date label: check whether one page is showing ex-date, record date, payment date or book closure.
- Dividend type: distinguish an ordinary interim dividend from a special dividend or a stock dividend. A timetable for one type should not be applied automatically to another.
- Issuer notice date: prefer the latest official announcement and read for language indicating a change or replacement.
- Amendment status: check whether the exchange has posted a subsequent amendment or correction.
Do not infer a date from a generic dividend website when an issuer notice or exchange disclosure is available. If the official sources remain inconsistent, pause the trade and ask the company’s registrar, the exchange or your broker which notice controls.

Interim, special and stock dividends
An interim dividend is normally identified as such in the issuer’s announcement and is often associated with a half-year or other interim reporting period. The label alone is not enough to establish entitlement: read the exact notice for the security and period.
Special dividends and stock dividends deserve separate attention. The comparison method is the same—identify the market, read the issuer’s latest notice, and verify the exchange or regulator entry—but the consideration delivered may not be cash, and the timetable may be presented differently. Never use the dates for an ordinary interim cash dividend as a substitute for the dates of a special or stock distribution.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Searching only for “record date”
Why it fails: the record date identifies the register check but is not the most useful trading cutoff. Fix: always capture the ex-dividend date beside it.
Using a generic calendar without checking the issuer
Why it fails: third-party pages can lag an amendment or merge dates from different markets. Fix: start with investor relations, then cross-check the exchange or regulator.
Confusing book closure with ex-dividend date
Why it fails: book closure concerns when transfers are closed for entitlement determination. Fix: record it as its own field and follow the exchange’s ex-date rule for trading decisions.

Assuming every market uses the same spacing
Why it fails: the relationship between ex-date and record date depends on exchange rules, business days and settlement conventions. Fix: use the dates published for the actual listing.
Treating the payment date as a guarantee of instant account credit
Why it fails: the company’s payable date and your intermediary’s posting time are different events. Fix: check the payment route and allow for the intermediary’s processing before escalating a missing payment.
Ignoring the share class
Why it fails: one issuer can have multiple listed securities with different notices. Fix: match the ticker and class on the notice to the holding in your account.

- Ticker and share class match the holding.
- Listing exchange and jurisdiction are identified.
- Notice is for the correct interim period.
- Dividend type is identified as ordinary interim, special or stock.
- Ex-dividend date is copied exactly.
- Record date is copied exactly.
- Payment or payable date is copied exactly.
- Book-closure dates are recorded separately, if shown.
- Issuer notice has been checked for amendments.
- Exchange or regulator disclosure has been cross-checked.
- Trade timing has been compared with the ex-date under that market’s rules.
When an official date changes
Corporate-action timetables can be amended. If a later issuer notice or exchange filing changes one date, replace the earlier timetable in your records and keep the amendment date. Recheck all three dates together: changing the record date can affect the ex-date, book closure or payment schedule. Use the latest official notice rather than combining the ex-date from one version with the payment date from another.
Bottom line
For any interim dividend, verify the exact security first, take the dates from the issuer’s latest announcement, and confirm them on the listing exchange or regulator’s corporate-actions record. Use the ex-dividend date for the practical buy-side cutoff, the record date for the register determination, and the payment date for the expected cash distribution. If sources conflict, compare market, date label, dividend type, notice date and amendments before relying on a date.
