Start with the official e-Filing account used for the appeal. Sign in, open Dashboard > Pending Actions > e-Proceedings, and review every appeal-related notice, submission, message, acknowledgment and order. The Income Tax Department also describes an e-appeal facility that displays appeal details and supports status tracking. Because the portal does not publish one universal screen path that exposes the assigned officer in every case, the case-specific acknowledgment or communication—not a generic hierarchy or a “pending” label—is the reliable way to identify whether the appeal is before a Joint Commissioner (Appeals) or a Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals).

Keep the appeal acknowledgment or reference number, PAN, assessment year, order being challenged and any demand notice beside you. Those details prevent you from confusing an appeal with another e-Proceedings matter. If the authority is still unclear after checking the case records, use official portal help or an authorized representative; do not guess from the general chain of appeals.

What you can confirm online—and what you cannot assume

The e-Filing portal can help you locate electronic communications and appeal records, but the exact screens and labels can vary by appeal type, assignment and portal changes. The Income Tax Department’s e-Proceedings User Manual documents a logged-in route to electronic notices and communications: Dashboard > Pending Actions > e-Proceedings. The Government of India’s faceless appeal scheme material describes an e-appeal facility with appeal-status tracking and display of relevant details.

Those sources do not establish a single current status page that always shows the name of the assigned appellate officer. In some cases, the authority is identified in the acknowledgment, a notice, a message or an order rather than in a separate “assigned officer” field. Treat the individual case record as controlling.

  • What the portal can show: electronic notices, requests, submissions, messages, acknowledgments, orders and other case communications available to the logged-in taxpayer or authorized representative.
  • What a general “pending” indication does not prove: that a particular named Commissioner (Appeals) or Joint Commissioner (Appeals) has been assigned, or that the appeal has reached a particular procedural stage.
  • What remains separate: checking status does not stop or extend a filing deadline.

Before signing in: assemble the identifiers that distinguish the appeal

Have the following information available before you search. An account can contain several proceedings, years and notices, and a similar-looking item may relate to an assessment rather than the appeal itself.

  • PAN of the taxpayer whose appeal was filed.
  • The appeal acknowledgment, Form 35 reference or other appeal number.
  • The relevant assessment year or tax year.
  • The Assessing Officer’s order or demand notice being challenged, including its date.
  • Dates and copies of later notices, written submissions and orders.
  • Access to the registered e-Filing credentials, or the authorized representative’s account where the representative is permitted to act for the taxpayer.

Use the reference number and assessment year together when opening a record. If a communication does not match the order, year or taxpayer, stop and verify it before responding.

How to check your income-tax appeal status online

1. Sign in through the official e-Filing account

Use the taxpayer’s registered credentials on the Income Tax Department e-Filing portal. An authorized representative should use the account and access method permitted for that representation. Avoid relying on a forwarded screenshot as the status record; open the item while logged in so that the full communication history and attachments are available.

2. Open Pending Actions and e-Proceedings

  1. Open the account dashboard.
  2. Select Pending Actions.
  3. Choose e-Proceedings, following the route documented in the Department’s e-Proceedings User Manual.
  4. Review the listed proceedings and open the item that matches the appeal’s assessment year, order date and reference number.

e-Proceedings is used for electronic notices and communications in other tax matters as well. Finding an item there confirms only that an electronic proceeding or communication is available; it does not, by itself, establish that the item is the appeal’s current stage or identify the appellate authority.

3. Inspect the complete communication trail

Open each appeal-related item rather than relying on a list view. Look for:

  • the authority, unit or office named in the acknowledgment;
  • notices requesting information, written submissions or hearing-related action;
  • your uploaded submissions and the dates they were accepted;
  • messages generated after a transfer, allocation or procedural event;
  • interim directions, rectification communications or final orders.

Download or securely retain the documents and note their issue dates. A later notice or order may contain a more specific assignment than the original acknowledgment.

4. Check the e-appeal status details, where available

The faceless appeal scheme describes an e-appeal facility that includes status tracking and display of relevant details. If your account presents an appeal-specific status view, compare the displayed reference number, assessment year and order with your records. Use the status view as an index to the case documents, not as a substitute for reading the latest notice or order.

Portal layouts can change. If you cannot find an e-appeal view, that does not prove the appeal is missing; continue with the acknowledgment and e-Proceedings communications, then seek official clarification if the record cannot be located.

5. Record the latest dated event

Create a simple case log with the date, document type, sender or office shown, action required and response deadline. Record the date you opened or downloaded each communication. This prevents an old notice from being mistaken for the latest status and gives your representative or portal support a precise trail to investigate.

How to find whether the case is with a JCIT(Appeals) or CIT(Appeals)

For a first appeal against an Assessing Officer’s order, the Income Tax Department’s Form 35 FAQ identifies two possible first appellate authorities: the Joint Commissioner (Appeals), commonly written JCIT(Appeals), and the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), commonly written CIT(Appeals). Which one applies depends on the case, applicable jurisdiction and assignment.

Do not select between them from the taxpayer’s income level, the amount in dispute or a general internet explanation. The assignment in your own appeal record is the relevant evidence. Search the acknowledgment, notices, messages and orders for the authority or unit named there. If a document names only a faceless appeal unit or another administrative description, preserve that wording and ask official support or your authorized representative to explain how it maps to the appellate authority.

What to compare Why it matters What to use
Authority named in the case record Identifies the office actually handling the appeal Latest acknowledgment, notice, message or order
Order or appeal type Determines whether the JCIT(Appeals)/CIT(Appeals) first-appeal framework applies Assessing Officer’s order and Form 35 details
Assessment year and governing law Transition rules can affect which Act governs a pending matter Case year, filing date and current Department guidance
Communication versus general proceeding An e-Proceedings notice may concern another tax action Reference number, subject line and attached order

Where the appeal sits in the tax-appeal hierarchy

The Department describes the sequence for an appeal against an Assessing Officer’s order as:

  1. Assessing Officer
  2. Joint Commissioner (Appeals) or Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals)
  3. Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT)
  4. High Court
  5. Supreme Court

This hierarchy tells you the level of the first appeal; it does not tell you which individual officer or unit has been assigned. A case shown as pending at the first-appeal level should not be treated as an ITAT, High Court or Supreme Court matter unless a later filing and record confirms that escalation.

What the 2026 transition guidance means for pending CIT(A) appeals

The Department’s 2026 “Appeals and Revisions” help page states that there is no structural change in the appellate hierarchy under the Income Tax Act, 2025. It also states that an appeal pending before CIT(A) on 1 April 2026 continues and is disposed of as if the Income Tax Act, 2025 had not been enacted, under the Income Tax Act, 1961. On that guidance, a taxpayer does not file a new appeal solely because of the legislative transition.

This is a time-sensitive administrative statement. Later notifications or portal instructions may change how the transition is presented. Check the current Department guidance and the wording of your own case communications, particularly if the appeal was pending on 1 April 2026 or if a notice refers to a different statutory provision.

How to interpret common situations without overreading the portal

The appeal is listed as pending, but no officer is named

Pending means that the portal has not recorded a final disposal in the view you opened; it does not establish the identity of the assigned appellate authority or the exact stage. Open the acknowledgment and latest communications. If none identifies the authority, request clarification through official portal help or an authorized representative.

e-Proceedings shows a notice, but it does not mention the appeal

e-Proceedings covers multiple kinds of electronic notices. Match the notice to the appeal number, assessment year and challenged order before treating it as an appeal event. If those identifiers do not match, handle it as a separate proceeding unless the Department confirms otherwise.

The acknowledgment names an authority, but a later notice uses different wording

Keep both documents. The later communication may reflect a unit description, reassignment or a procedural function rather than a change in appellate authority. Ask for confirmation instead of assuming that the second label supersedes the first.

No appeal record appears in the account

Recheck the taxpayer account, assessment year, PAN and reference number. Confirm that the filing was accepted and that you are viewing the correct taxpayer profile or authorized-representative relationship. If the record still cannot be found, contact official portal support with the acknowledgment and filing details. Do not create a duplicate appeal merely because a status view is unavailable.

A notice has a response date that is close or has passed

Save the notice and seek professional help immediately. A portal search is not a response, and waiting for an authority name to appear can prejudice the case. Follow the notice’s stated submission method while you obtain clarification.

Appeal deadline: status checking does not extend it

The Form 35 FAQ states a general appeal-filing period of 30 days from service of the order or demand, as applicable. It also notes that delay may be condoned in exceptional circumstances when there is reasonable cause. The exact starting event depends on the order or demand and how it was served.

Do not treat the 30-day period as a countdown that begins when you first discover an e-Proceedings item. Establish the service date from the order, portal delivery record or other evidence relevant to your case. If the period is close to expiring, file or obtain urgent professional advice rather than waiting for a status screen to reveal the assigned authority. A portal status check neither files an appeal nor automatically grants condonation.

What to do when the assignment remains unclear

  1. Reopen the acknowledgment and every appeal-specific notice, message, submission receipt and order.
  2. Confirm that all documents carry the same PAN, assessment year, appeal reference and challenged order.
  3. Note the exact office or unit wording, including abbreviations such as JCIT(Appeals) or CIT(Appeals).
  4. Use the official portal help or support channel and provide the reference number rather than sending sensitive documents through an unverified contact.
  5. If the dispute involves limitation, jurisdiction, a large demand, a hearing, a transfer or an adverse order, consult an authorized representative experienced in income-tax appeals.

Keep a written record of the support request, date and response. If support directs you to another official channel, follow that instruction and retain the ticket or acknowledgment.

Documents and security practices for a reliable status record

  • Download notices and orders from the logged-in portal instead of relying only on email alerts.
  • Preserve the original file names, issue dates and reference numbers.
  • Store submissions and acknowledgments in a folder organized by assessment year and appeal number.
  • Do not share passwords, one-time passwords or full account access with an unverified helper.
  • When authorizing a representative, confirm that the portal relationship and permissions are active before expecting the representative to see the case.
  • Compare downloaded documents with the portal record if a forwarded copy appears incomplete or altered.

A practical case-log template

A case log makes status changes and deadlines easier to verify. Record one row for each event:

Date shown on document Document or event Reference and year Authority or unit wording Action and due date
For example, the date printed on the notice Notice, submission receipt, message, acknowledgment or order Appeal number and assessment year Copy the wording exactly Required response, if any

The example headings are a record-keeping format, not portal fields. Copy the authority wording exactly so that a support agent or representative can compare it with the Department’s internal record.

When professional help is warranted

Many taxpayers can locate a notice or acknowledgment themselves. Professional help is particularly useful when the authority cannot be identified, the filing period may have expired, a condonation request is needed, the order involves a substantial demand, the case has moved between authorities, or a hearing or detailed written submission is required. Choose a qualified authorized representative familiar with appeals and give that person the complete downloaded record, not just a screenshot of a status label.

This guide explains how to locate records and verify the authority shown for a case. It is not a determination of jurisdiction or legal advice for a particular assessment.

Key takeaways

  • Use Dashboard > Pending Actions > e-Proceedings to review electronic notices and communications documented by the Department.
  • Use the appeal acknowledgment and case-specific notices, messages and orders to identify the assigned authority.
  • For a first appeal against an Assessing Officer’s order, the relevant first appellate authority may be JCIT(Appeals) or CIT(Appeals).
  • A pending label or a generic hierarchy does not identify a named officer or prove the procedural stage.
  • The general filing period stated in the Form 35 FAQ is 30 days from service of the order or demand, with possible condonation for reasonable cause in exceptional cases.
  • Appeals pending before CIT(A) on 1 April 2026 are described in the Department’s transition guidance as continuing under the Income Tax Act, 1961; verify current instructions before relying on that treatment.
