1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo check an ETF’s sector weightings, start with the fund issuer’s current holdings or portfolio page, then download the latest shareholder report and prospectus. Find the sector table or chart, note its “as of” date, and verify whether each percentage is measured against net asset value, total investments, or total exposure. Those denominators are not interchangeable.
Next, read the fund objective, strategy, benchmark, weighting rules, principal risks and fees. Review the underlying holdings rather than relying on the fund name or index label. This process shows both where the portfolio is allocated today and why that allocation can change.

Why sector weightings deserve a check before you buy
An ETF can look diversified while having a large economic dependence on one industry group. A broad-sounding strategy may still be dominated by a few sectors, while a fund named for a theme can hold companies whose revenues come from several different industries. Sector data gives you a first view of that exposure, but it is only useful when you know the date and denominator behind the percentages.

Sector allocation also affects how an ETF may behave alongside the rest of your portfolio. Two funds can own many of the same companies even when their sector labels differ, and an index can assign unusually high weights to a small number of securities. The issuer’s holdings, prospectus and shareholder report provide the evidence needed to identify those situations.

Where to find an ETF’s sector allocation
The issuer’s holdings or portfolio page
Begin at the official website for the exact ETF and share class. The holdings or portfolio page commonly displays sector percentages, top positions, net asset value (NAV), closing market price, premium or discount, median bid-ask spread and historical premium/discount information. Trading figures are time-sensitive, so record when you viewed them.
The latest shareholder report
Download the most recent annual or semiannual shareholder report. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov guidance says the cover identifies the fund name, ticker, exchange and whether the report is annual or semiannual. The report must include one or more tables, charts or graphs depicting portfolio holdings by category as of the end of the reporting period; industry sector is an expressly listed category.
The prospectus and summary prospectus
Use the summary prospectus for a concise description and the full prospectus for the complete terms. These documents explain the investment objective, strategy, benchmark, principal risks, fees and the rules used to weight securities. Obtain them from the issuer or through the SEC’s EDGAR database, both of which Investor.gov recommends before investing.

- Identify the exact fund and share class. Confirm the ETF’s legal name, ticker and exchange on the issuer page and in the prospectus. Similar names can refer to different funds or share classes.
- Collect the primary documents. Save the current holdings page, the latest shareholder report, the summary prospectus and the full prospectus. If the issuer page is incomplete, use the fund’s filing in SEC EDGAR.
- Locate the sector table or chart. In the shareholder report, search for headings such as “sector,” “industry,” “portfolio holdings by category” or “investments.” Copy each sector percentage and the reporting date into your notes.
- Record the percentage basis. Look for wording such as “percentage of net assets,” “percentage of total investments” or “percentage of total exposure.” Do not compare figures until the bases match or you have adjusted your interpretation.
- Read the fund objective and strategy. Determine whether the ETF tracks an index, uses active management, applies caps or floors to sectors, uses derivatives, or can hold cash. These rules explain why the displayed allocation looks the way it does.
- Inspect the underlying holdings. Review the complete holdings file when available, not only the top-ten list. Note the largest positions, their industries and any securities that create indirect or derivative exposure.
- Check the index methodology. For an index ETF, read the methodology for security selection, sector classification, weighting, rebalancing and reconstitution. Investor.gov specifically advises investors to look through the index to the actual holdings because non-traditional index funds may weight securities in unexpected ways.
- Assess concentration and overlap. Identify the largest sectors and largest individual positions. If you already own other funds, compare their holdings for overlap rather than assuming different tickers provide different exposure.
- Review costs and risks. Confirm the expense ratio and other operating costs in the prospectus. Read principal risks for concentration, tracking error, derivatives, liquidity, foreign securities and the specific sectors represented.
- Check trading information. Review the current NAV, market price, premium or discount, median bid-ask spread and historical premium/discount data. These details affect the price at which you trade but do not replace the sector analysis.
- Recheck immediately before purchase. Holdings, sector percentages, index rules and risk disclosures can change. Use the newest issuer data and filings available at the time you place the order.
Understand the denominator behind every percentage
The same portfolio can show different sector percentages depending on what is in the denominator. The SEC notes that a report may present categories as a percentage of net asset value, total investments or total exposure. A percentage from one basis should not be compared directly with a percentage from another.
| Basis shown in a report | What it generally measures | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Net asset value | The sector’s value relative to the fund’s net assets after liabilities. | Useful for understanding the portfolio’s share of the fund’s NAV; compare with another fund only when its figure uses the same basis and date. |
| Total investments | The sector’s share of the securities and other investments included in the report’s investment total. | Check which assets are included in that total before comparing it with a net-asset figure. |
| Total exposure | The sector’s economic exposure, which may include derivatives or other positions beyond the cash investment list. | Relevant when derivatives or other instruments create exposure that is not obvious from the securities’ market values. |
Write the basis beside every number in your worksheet. A sector shown at 30% of total exposure is not automatically equivalent to a sector shown at 30% of NAV. If a report does not make the denominator clear, treat the figure as incomplete until you find the explanatory note or another official document.

Read the holdings behind the sector chart
Look beyond the top-ten list
A sector table describes categories; the holdings list shows what you actually own. Examine the largest positions and the percentage of assets they represent. Several companies in the same sector can make the portfolio dependent on one business cycle even when no single position appears dominant.
Check for indirect and look-through exposure
Read the security descriptions and the fund’s notes for derivatives, depositary receipts, cash substitutes and other instruments. A company classified in one sector can have substantial revenue or operational exposure to another. The index methodology may also assign a conglomerate or platform company to a category that differs from the economic exposure you had in mind.
Review the full index or portfolio rules
Market-capitalization weighting, equal weighting, factor screens, sector caps and thematic eligibility rules can produce very different concentrations. Find the scheduled rebalancing and reconstitution rules, along with any buffer or fast-entry provisions. A sector chart is a snapshot; the methodology explains the mechanism that can move it.
How to judge whether an ETF is too concentrated
There is no universal SEC percentage limit that defines an ETF as “too concentrated.” The appropriate level depends on your objective, time horizon, risk tolerance and the other investments you own. Use a consistent set of observations instead of an arbitrary cutoff.
- Largest-sector share: Note which sector is first and how far it is ahead of the next sectors.
- Largest-position share: Record the weight of the biggest security and the combined weight of the largest positions.
- Sector clustering: Consider whether multiple labeled sectors are driven by the same economic factor, such as interest rates, commodity prices or consumer spending.
- Portfolio overlap: Compare company names and identifiers with your existing ETFs and individual stocks. A different sector label does not guarantee different holdings.
- Change over time: Compare several dated reports to see whether the concentration is structural or a recent result of market performance or rebalancing.
Use these observations to decide whether the ETF complements your current allocation. Do not treat a sector percentage as a prediction of returns or a promise of diversification.

| Reporting date | The “as of” date for each sector table and holdings file. | Market movements and rebalances can materially change weights between dates. |
| Percentage basis | Net asset value, total investments or total exposure. | Different denominators can make identical-looking percentages incomparable. |
| Sector concentration | Largest sectors and their relative shares. | Shows the portfolio’s dominant categories. |
| Position concentration | Largest holdings and their combined weight. | Reveals single-company and top-position risk. |
| Index or portfolio construction | Selection, weighting, caps, screens and rebalancing rules. | Explains how today’s allocation may change. |
| Holdings overlap | Shared companies, securities and look-through exposures. | Identifies duplication across funds. |
| Objective and benchmark | The stated goal and index, if any. | Tests whether the ETF fits the role you want it to play. |
| Principal risks | Sector, derivatives, liquidity, foreign-market and other relevant risks. | Shows hazards not captured by a sector pie chart. |
| Fees and operating costs | Expense ratio and other costs disclosed in the prospectus. | Costs reduce returns and can differ even for similar exposures. |
| Trading conditions | NAV, premium/discount history and median bid-ask spread. | Provides execution context in addition to portfolio exposure. |
If the dates or bases differ, label the comparison as provisional and obtain matching information before making a decision. Do not “normalize” figures by guessing what the issuer intended.
Trading data adds context, not a substitute for sector analysis
An ETF has both a portfolio value and a market trading price. The issuer’s page should provide NAV, the closing market price, the current premium or discount, median bid-ask spread and historical premium/discount information. NAV is calculated from the underlying portfolio, while the market price is the price at which shares trade on an exchange; they can differ during the trading day.
These figures help you evaluate execution and market conditions. A narrow or wide spread, or a history of premiums and discounts, may affect the cost of entering or leaving a position. They do not tell you whether the fund is concentrated in technology, financials or any other sector. Keep trading information in a separate part of your review so it does not obscure the allocation question.

Keeping the date and basis beside each number makes later updates reliable. Replace old entries rather than mixing figures from different reporting periods without labeling them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Illustrative comparison: why dates and bases change the answer
Suppose Fund A’s shareholder report lists technology at 28% of net assets as of June 30, while Fund B’s website lists technology at 28% of total exposure as of August 31. The matching percentages do not establish equal exposure. The funds use different denominators and dates, and either portfolio may have changed through price movements or a scheduled rebalance.
A sound comparison would obtain reports with the same or closely aligned dates, confirm the same denominator, and then inspect the holdings and methodology. If matching data are unavailable, state the limitation and compare the construction rules and actual holdings instead of presenting the percentages as equivalent.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Relying on the fund name
Problem: A broad or thematic name suggests diversification that the holdings do not provide.
Correction: Use the sector table and complete holdings list, then read the objective and methodology.
Using an outdated chart
Problem: A search result or third-party page may show a historical allocation.
Correction: Start with the issuer’s current page and the newest shareholder report, and record the “as of” date.

Ignoring the denominator
Problem: Percentages from NAV, total investments and total exposure are treated as identical.
Correction: Put the basis next to every figure and compare only matching bases or clearly explain the difference.
Comparing reports from different dates
Problem: Market movements or a rebalance can change sector weights between reports.
Correction: Align dates where possible and avoid false precision when they cannot be aligned.
Stopping at the sector chart
Problem: A chart hides top-position concentration, overlapping companies and derivative exposure.
Correction: Read the holdings, index methodology, prospectus and risk disclosures.
Assuming a sector cap is permanent
Problem: A current cap or allocation is mistaken for a guarantee that applies under every condition.
Correction: Read the methodology and prospectus for exceptions, rebalancing rules and permitted instruments.
Treating trading metrics as diversification measures
Problem: NAV, spreads or premiums are used to infer sector risk.
Correction: Use those figures for execution context and use holdings data for exposure analysis.
When to repeat the check
Repeat the review before purchasing, after a material index reconstitution or strategy change, and whenever the issuer posts a newer shareholder report or holdings file. Also revisit the analysis when your own portfolio changes. Because sector percentages and holdings are snapshots, an old conclusion should not be carried forward without checking the latest official data.
Bottom line
The reliable way to see an ETF’s sector allocation is to combine the issuer’s current holdings page with the latest shareholder report and prospectus. Record the reporting date and percentage basis, inspect the actual securities and index rules, compare concentration and overlap with matching data, and use NAV and trading statistics only as execution context. This method tells you what the fund owns, how the issuer measures it and what could change after you buy.
