Check a second-hand Android phone in three layers, in this order: inspect the hardware while it is still offline, verify the boot chain without unlocking anything, then review Play Protect, certification and patch status. A clean software result does not prove that the chassis was never opened or that every component is original; a warning about an unlocked bootloader, failed Verified Boot or failed certification is a reason to stop setup and preserve evidence.
Do not sign in with your Google account, copy sensitive files or enable OEM unlocking until these checks are complete. Photograph the phone, record its identifiers and compare the seller’s description with what you actually receive.

What this inspection can—and cannot—prove
Android’s security documentation gives you strong evidence about the boot chain and installed software, but it does not provide a universal consumer test for every physical modification. Someone may have opened the phone, replaced a screen, storage chip, modem or other part, or installed an interposer without changing the attested operating system.

Use the checks as separate evidence streams. Physical clues address the enclosure and visible parts. Verified Boot and bootloader state address whether the startup chain is trusted. Play Protect addresses potentially harmful applications. Certification and update dates show whether the software identifies as an approved, maintained installation. Passing one layer never cancels a failure in another.

For a phone that will hold high-value credentials, provide enterprise access or support a sensitive investigation, an inspection by the manufacturer or an authorized repair center—with documented chain of custody—is stronger than a home inspection.
1. Inspect the phone before powering into your accounts
Work on a clean, well-lit surface. Keep the phone offline if possible and do not insert a personal SIM until you have recorded its condition. A magnifying glass and a bright flashlight are useful, but no special “tamper meter” is required.
Examine the frame and display fit
- Run a fingernail along the display-to-frame seam. Look for sections that sit higher, lower or wider than the rest.
- Check for fresh adhesive lines, squeeze-out, dust trapped under the glass or a display color and texture that do not match the frame.
- Inspect corners for pry marks, bending, chipped coating or a gap that closes when you press on it.
- Compare the screen’s alignment with the earpiece, front camera and sensors. A shifted panel can indicate replacement or an incorrectly seated part.
Check the rear cover, cameras and seals
- Look for a rear cover whose texture, color or gloss differs from the camera island or frame.
- Inspect camera glass for scratches, haze, fingerprints under the lens or a ring that is not seated evenly.
- Check every visible seal and gasket for breaks, lifting or adhesive residue. A missing seal is an indicator, not proof, because an authorized repair may also disturb it.
- Press lightly around the back cover. Creaking, movement or a localized bulge can signal poor reassembly or battery damage; stop using a phone with a swollen or separating battery.
Inspect screws, ports, tray and buttons
- Use light to inspect screw heads. Disturbed slots, rounded edges, mismatched fasteners or screws with different finishes suggest prior opening.
- Look into the USB port and headphone jack, if present, for bent contacts, scraped metal, unusual debris or a port that feels loose when a cable is inserted.
- Remove the SIM tray only far enough to inspect it. A bent tray, damaged seal or missing gasket can indicate handling or water-resistance compromise.
- Press each button and test its travel. A button that binds, sits at a different height or rattles may have been replaced or incorrectly fitted.
- Check the frame for nonstandard holes, plugs, magnets, cuts or filler that are inconsistent with the model’s design.
Record identifiers and the seller’s description
Before setup, photograph all sides, the screen showing the initial state, the box label if supplied and any visible damage. Record the model name, serial number and IMEI exactly as displayed on the device, packaging and purchase paperwork. Note the seller’s claims about repairs, replacement parts, water resistance and software state. An identifier mismatch is more important than a cosmetic scuff: pause the transaction until the seller explains it.

2. Check the boot chain without unlocking anything
Do not enable OEM unlocking, issue an unlock command or unlock and relock the phone “just to test it.” Android’s compatibility requirements call for tamper-evident storage of bootloader state, physical confirmation for a lock-to-unlock transition, rollback protection and secure erasure when the state changes. Android Open Source Project documentation specifies that transitions wipe data partitions and require user confirmation before deletion.
Understand the states you may see
AOSP documents a bootloader that reports LOCKED or UNLOCKED. A normally supplied consumer phone should not unexpectedly present an unlocked state. A boot screen may also display a warning that the operating system cannot be verified, that the device is unsafe, or that a custom recovery or nonstandard image is present. Exact wording and screen color vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Start the phone and read, rather than change, its state
- Power on with no account signed in. Photograph any warning screen before dismissing it.
- Let the phone continue to the normal lock or setup screen. If it enters a bootloader or recovery menu unexpectedly, do not select an unlock, wipe or flash option.
- Look for an explicit UNLOCKED indication, a failed Verified Boot message, a custom recovery name or a notice that the software is not an approved image.
- If the phone starts normally, continue to the software checks below without changing developer or bootloader settings.
An unexpected UNLOCKED state, custom recovery or failed verified-boot message is a stop signal. Keep the device powered as little as necessary, preserve photographs and purchase records, and contact the seller or an authorized service provider. Do not attempt to “fix” the state first: changing it can erase evidence and data.
Why unlocking as a test is unsafe
The documented state-change command is fastboot flashing [unlock | lock]. Using it is not a diagnostic procedure. A state transition can wipe the data partitions, requires on-device confirmation and changes the evidence you are trying to assess. The safe inspection is read-only: observe the state and warnings the phone already reports.

3. Use Play Integrity as supporting evidence
On Android 13 and higher, Play Integrity’s MEETS_DEVICE_INTEGRITY verdict includes hardware-backed proof that the bootloader is locked and that the loaded operating system is a certified manufacturer image. MEETS_STRONG_INTEGRITY adds a recent-security-update requirement for all relevant partitions.
These verdicts are normally consumed by apps and services rather than shown as a universal phone setting. Report a pass only when a trusted diagnostic you deliberately obtained displays the actual verdict. An app opening, installing or appearing in the launcher is not evidence that either verdict was achieved.
Support depends on the Android release, device hardware and the service making the attestation request. Treat an unavailable verdict as “not established,” not automatically as failure. A displayed failure, however, belongs with the other stop signals until the seller or an authorized technician explains it.
4. Check Play Protect, certification and update dates
Review Play Protect certification in Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Settings.
- Open About and find Play Protect certification.
- Record whether the device is certified or not certified, along with any explanatory text.
Labels can move slightly between Play Store versions, but the certification entry is under the store’s About section. A failed certification warrants stopping setup and asking the seller for a documented explanation; do not assume a factory reset will make an uncertified device genuine.

Run and document the Play Protect scan
- In the Play Store, tap your profile picture.
- Select Play Protect.
- Run the scan if a manual scan button is offered.
- Open the scan details to see the last-scan time and the list of apps examined, then photograph or record the result.
Google describes Play Protect as a service that automatically scans Android apps and works to prevent installation of harmful applications. A clean result lowers the risk of an obviously harmful app, but it is not a forensic test for altered chips, hidden hardware, replaced storage or other physical implants.
Record patch and software identity
Open the phone’s Settings and use the search field for Android security update, Google Play system update and Build number. The exact menu path differs by manufacturer; common locations are Settings → About phone → Android version for patch and Google Play system dates, and Settings → About phone → Build number for the build identifier.
Record:
- Android version and Android security-patch date.
- Google Play system update date, where shown.
- Build number and model identifier.
- Serial number and IMEI, matching the records made before setup.
- Every warning or error shown by the operating system, Play Store or Play Protect.
An implausibly old patch for a model that the seller claims is fully supported, or a software identity that does not match the physical model, is a reason to stop. A current patch reduces software risk but cannot establish that the phone was never opened.

Decision guide: when to proceed, pause or reject
Proceed only when all critical checks are consistent
Proceed to your own account setup only when the physical condition matches the listing, identifiers agree, no boot warning or unexpected unlocked state appears, certification is acceptable, Play Protect reports no harmful app and the patch information is plausible for the model. Keep your photographs and notes with the purchase record.
Pause and ask for evidence
Pause when there is a repaired-looking seam, mismatched part, missing seal, identifier discrepancy, unusually old patch or an unavailable integrity result without an explanation. Ask what was repaired, who performed it, which parts were used and whether an invoice or service record exists. A seller who cannot explain a visible alteration should not be given your credentials or data.
Stop and preserve the device state
Stop when the bootloader is unexpectedly UNLOCKED, Verified Boot fails, a custom recovery appears, Play Protect certification fails, a harmful app is detected or the model and software identity conflict. Photograph the message, do not unlock, relock, flash or reset the phone, and contact the seller or an authorized service provider. If you paid by a method with a dispute process, retain the listing, messages and photographs.

A repeatable inspection workflow
- Separate the phone from your accounts. Keep it offline and do not enter passwords, payment details or recovery codes.
- Document the starting condition. Photograph the exterior, startup screen, labels and any damage; record model, serial number and IMEI.
- Inspect visible hardware. Check seams, display fit, rear cover, camera glass, screws, ports, SIM tray, buttons and seals.
- Read the startup state. Note LOCKED or UNLOCKED, Verified Boot warnings, custom recovery and any unapproved-image message. Do not choose an unlock or wipe option.
- Check software trust. Where a trusted diagnostic exposes Play Integrity, record the actual verdict rather than inferring it from normal app behavior.
- Check Google Play status. Review Play Protect certification, run the scan and record the last scan and findings.
- Record maintenance data. Capture Android version, security-patch date, Google Play system update date, build number and all warning text.
- Compare the evidence. A failure on any one axis remains a failure; a pass on another axis does not erase it.
- Choose the next action. Proceed only with a consistent record, pause for seller documentation when evidence is ambiguous, or stop and preserve the state when a trust or identity warning appears.
Common mistakes that weaken the check
- Unlocking to see what happens: this can wipe partitions and alter the evidence.
- Assuming a factory reset makes a phone trustworthy: a reset does not repair a mismatched part, an unlocked bootloader or failed certification.
- Treating Play Protect as a hardware scanner: it focuses on potentially harmful applications.
- Accepting a current patch as proof of originality: patch age describes software maintenance, not the history of the chassis or components.
- Ignoring an identifier mismatch: a clean-looking exterior cannot explain conflicting model, serial or IMEI records.
- Continuing setup after a warning: account credentials and personal files make later investigation and return more difficult.
When a professional inspection is justified
Use the manufacturer or an authorized repair center when the phone will access financial accounts, corporate systems, privileged credentials or sensitive investigative material; when physical evidence is ambiguous; or when the seller disputes a boot or certification warning. Request a written inspection result that identifies the device by serial number or IMEI and describes any replaced parts. Keep the handoff and return documentation so the chain of custody is clear.
