Treat the itinerary as a research draft. Re-run the exact search with your dates and traveler details, compare the final checkout amount and rules, and save the page with its access time. Prices, availability, schedules and policies can change after an AI model produced its answer.
This process catches the most expensive and risky errors: a fare that excludes mandatory charges, a codeshare shown under the wrong operating airline, an obsolete train timetable, a closed hotel, an attraction that is out of season, or visa advice that applies to a different nationality. If the AI answer conflicts with a live provider or regulator page, the live authoritative source controls.

Why an AI itinerary can look precise and still be wrong
Generative AI predicts text from patterns in its training and retrieved context; it does not automatically hold a reservation or verify that a web page is current. Smartraveller, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, warns that AI “doesn’t verify” the information it gives and that output may be inaccurate, incomplete or out of date. Its examples include old flight and public-transport schedules, incorrect visa and border information, hotels that have closed, unavailable or out-of-season activities, and missing or inaccurate costs.
The Government of Canada similarly cautions that generated content can appear credible while being inaccurate, nonsensical or inconsistent with source data. Its guidance is direct: “Don’t consider generated content as authoritative.” An itinerary can therefore be useful for ideas and sequencing, but it is not evidence that a service exists, operates on your date or costs the stated amount.

The high stated willingness to cross-check is sensible: an incorrect price is inconvenient, while incorrect entry or safety information can cause denied boarding, fines, missed connections or physical risk.
Start by converting the itinerary into checkable claims
Do not try to validate a long narrative in one pass. Break it into rows so that each fact has one status and one source. Create one row for every flight, train, bus, ferry, hotel night, attraction, transfer and policy statement.

Mark every row unverified until a current authoritative page confirms it. A citation in an AI response is only a lead; open it and check that the page actually states the rule for your nationality, dates, fare or room type.
Step 1: Recheck the price in the seller’s live booking flow
Air tickets
On the operating carrier’s website, repeat the exact origin, destination, dates, number and type of passengers, cabin and fare conditions used by the AI prompt. Continue far enough to see the payable total, not merely the first search result. Under U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) rules, advertised airfares must show the total price including applicable government taxes, fees and mandatory carrier surcharges. The checkout total is still the number to record because optional selections and itinerary changes can alter it.

Compare the AI amount with the live total and list differences rather than averaging them. Check baggage, seat assignment, change and cancellation charges separately. A low headline fare may omit a checked bag or show a basic fare with severe restrictions. Record the currency and whether the AI converted it; a conversion without an exchange-rate date is not a guaranteed price.
Lodging
Use the property’s own checkout, or the booking platform’s final payment screen, for the identical dates, occupancy, room and cancellation choice. Include mandatory resort, destination, cleaning and service fees. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says mandatory short-term-lodging fees must be included in the total price shown to consumers. If a fee appears only after you enter payment details, capture that screen and treat the earlier AI or search figure as incomplete.
Attractions, transfers and other services
Re-run the transaction on the attraction, transport or tour operator’s current site. Confirm the date, entry time, participant ages, residency category, pickup location and taxes. An AI itinerary may combine a public list price with a seasonal surcharge or may describe a ticket that has sold out. A service is not confirmed until the seller offers the selected slot and displays the amount you would pay.
Step 2: Confirm schedules and the provider that will actually operate
For each transport leg, verify the service or flight number, operating provider, departure and arrival airport or station, local dates, time zones, connection window and current service alerts. Check the operator’s timetable or booking engine on the date you intend to travel; Smartraveller specifically warns that AI can supply outdated public-transport schedules.
Codeshares and marketing names
An AI answer may display a marketing airline while another airline operates the aircraft. DOT requires clear identification of the airline actually operating a codeshare flight. Confirm the operating carrier in the live result, on the itinerary details and again before payment. The operating carrier determines the aircraft, check-in location, baggage process and many disruption procedures.

Connections and overnight date changes
Write each departure and arrival with its local date and time. A flight that leaves late at night and lands the next calendar day, or a train that changes stations within one city, can make an apparently comfortable connection impossible. Check minimum connection guidance where the operator publishes it, then allow time for immigration, security, baggage collection and a terminal change. Do not rely on an AI-generated “two-hour connection” label without checking the airports and terminals.

Alerts and seasonal service
Look for notices about strikes, weather, engineering work, reduced winter service, airport changes and temporary closures. An old timetable can remain in an AI response after the operator has changed the route. If the operator’s booking engine offers no service for your date, do not infer that the AI has found a hidden seat; treat the itinerary as invalid until the provider confirms availability.
Step 3: Read the fare, room and ticket rules before paying
Open the full fare conditions or lodging terms, not only a summary badge such as “flexible” or “free cancellation.” Record the exact deadline, including the time zone, and the consequence of missing it.
- Refundability: Is the ticket or room refundable, partially refundable or credit-only?
- Change cost: What is the change fee, and must you also pay any fare or rate difference?
- Cancellation deadline: Is it measured by local property time, departure time or a provider’s central time?
- No-show rule: Does failing to arrive for the first segment or first night cancel the rest of the booking?
- Baggage and seats: What is included, and what must be purchased separately?
- Deposit and payment: When is the deposit charged, in what currency and in what refund form?
- Room restrictions: Are there age limits, occupancy limits, minimum stays or required identification?
DOT’s ancillary-fee rule requires airlines and ticket agents to disclose baggage, change and cancellation fees and policies before purchase. For qualifying airline tickets bought at least seven days before departure, DOT says the airline must offer either a 24-hour penalty-free cancellation and refund or a 24-hour hold at the quoted price. That 24-hour requirement does not apply to tickets bought through online travel agencies or travel agents, so identify the seller before assuming the protection applies.
Step 4: Verify visa, entry, health, customs and safety claims independently
Use the official immigration, border, health, customs and travel-advisory authority for the destination and your nationality. Check the rule for the exact passport, travel purpose, transit countries, dates and permitted length of stay. A statement such as “no visa required” is incomplete if an electronic authorization, passport-validity period, onward-ticket proof, vaccination record or transit visa is required.

Do not accept an AI citation until the linked government page actually contains the relevant rule and applies to your circumstances. Smartraveller warns that incorrect AI advice in these areas can cost money, create stress, affect safety or put a traveler at risk of breaking local law. Check local rules on medicines, photography, driving, alcohol, clothing, public behavior and documentation when they affect your itinerary.
Safety advice also needs a date. Look for current advisories, regional restrictions, weather hazards, health notices and emergency numbers. An AI statement that a neighborhood is safe or a border is open is not a substitute for the authority’s current notice.

- Save a PDF or screenshot of each live fare, timetable, availability result and policy page.
- Write down the access date and time, local time zone, displayed currency and the exact search assumptions.
- Keep the page address and, after booking, the confirmation number and receipt.
- If the amount changes between search and checkout, record both values and the point at which the change occurred.
- If a rule is unclear, contact the provider through its official channel and retain the written answer.
Prices and inventory are dynamic, so an AI figure is never a price guarantee. Your saved evidence shows what the provider displayed when you checked and helps customer service identify the fare, room or policy involved.
How to compare two itinerary options fairly
When the AI suggests alternatives, hold the date and traveler assumptions constant. Compare the following fields in a single table:

The cheapest option can be more expensive after baggage and change fees; the fastest can carry a missed-connection risk; and a flexible room can be worth more than a small headline saving if plans are uncertain.

What to do when the AI and the live source disagree
The provider shows a higher price
Use the live checkout total, not the AI estimate. Save both figures, check whether the AI omitted a mandatory fee or used another currency, and decide whether the current price still fits your budget. If the provider’s page changes again, preserve the new evidence rather than repeatedly relying on the old quote.
The service or property cannot be found
Search the operator’s own site by the exact service number, property name and date. Check spelling, renamed stations, airport codes and seasonal opening dates. If no authoritative result exists, remove the item or replace it with one the operator currently sells. Do not infer that a missing listing is a hidden or fully booked option.
The policy is ambiguous
Read the detailed terms attached to the selected fare or room, then ask the provider for a written clarification. Keep the response with your booking records. A generic policy page may not override the rules attached to a specific rate.

The government guidance conflicts with the AI answer
Follow the applicable government authority and confirm that you selected the correct nationality, destination and travel date. If the page is unclear, contact the authority or consulate before paying for a nonrefundable booking.
Final pre-payment checklist
- Every transport leg has a live service or flight number and a named operating provider.
- Airports, stations, terminals, local dates and time zones are confirmed.
- The final price includes mandatory taxes, fees, bags and required services.
- Cancellation, refund, change, no-show, deposit and fare-difference rules are saved.
- Lodging fees and the exact room’s occupancy and cancellation terms are included.
- Attractions and transfers are open, available and bookable for the stated date.
- Visa, entry, health, customs and safety rules are confirmed for the traveler’s nationality and itinerary.
- Page addresses, retrieval times, screenshots and written provider answers are stored.
- Any unresolved disagreement has been settled by the live provider or regulator before payment.
As Smartraveller puts it, “AI tools should support your travel planning, not replace doing your own research.” Use the model for ideas and organization, then make the booking decision from current provider and government evidence. The U.S. Office of Aviation Consumer Protection gives the same practical instruction: “Check your airline’s policy before purchasing a ticket.”
