A bank’s quarterly business update is a starting point, not an investment case. Before buying shares, reconcile the update with the exchange-filed financial results, board approval, auditor’s limited-review or audit report, and notes to accounts. Then test five things over several comparable periods: whether loan growth is funded, whether asset quality is worsening, what is driving earnings, how much capital and liquidity protect depositors, and whether the disclosures are complete and comparable. The framework below uses Indian regulatory disclosures as its example; investors elsewhere should substitute their own regulator’s and exchange’s rules.
First define the review: bank, quarter and jurisdiction
Do not begin with a headline such as “advances up” or “profit rises.” Write down the exact bank, reporting quarter, publication date, exchange, currency and reporting basis you are examining. A bank may publish standalone figures for the legal entity and consolidated figures for a group containing subsidiaries; those are not interchangeable.

- Period: distinguish the three-month quarter from year-to-date or nine-month figures.
- Basis: mark every number as standalone or consolidated.
- Units: record whether amounts are in rupees, millions, crores or another unit.
- Comparators: use the same quarter a year earlier and the immediately preceding quarter, where both are presented on a consistent basis.
- Rules: confirm the current reporting requirements for the bank’s country and exchange. The detailed framework cited here is Indian and should not be treated as a universal rulebook.
For Indian-listed banks, begin with the exchange filing and the bank’s investor-relations page. The SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements text identifies board approval and limited-review reporting for unaudited quarterly results. Read that filing together with the Reserve Bank of India’s Financial Statements—Presentation and Disclosures Directions, 2021, including amendments shown on that page through 2023.

A slide deck or press release is management’s summary. The evidence set is wider:
#1 Best Overall
- Download the quarterly results filed with the exchange.
- Identify the board-approval date and whether the numbers are unaudited.
- Read the auditor’s limited-review report, or audit report where applicable, including any qualification, emphasis of matter or inability to obtain evidence.
- Open the notes to accounts and accounting-policy information.
- Obtain the investor presentation or business update only after the filing, so its claims can be checked against reported numbers.
- Save the previous quarter and the same quarter in the prior year. You need the original comparable documents, not only a restated percentage in a presentation.
Notes are not optional background. RBI states that notes-to-accounts disclosures supplement other applicable legal, regulatory and reporting requirements. The Directions also say that “More comprehensive disclosures than the minimum required under these Directions are encouraged, especially if such disclosures significantly aid in the understanding of the financial position and performance.”
Check whether a number is presented as reported, annualised, adjusted or “pro forma.” If the bank changes a definition, accounting policy, portfolio classification or presentation, record the change before calculating a trend.
Step 1: Test loan growth against deposits and funding
Place advances and deposits side by side for the current quarter, preceding quarter and year-earlier quarter. A larger loan book can increase future interest income, but growth by itself does not establish that funding is stable, affordable or prudently underwritten.

|---|---|---|
| Gross advances or loans | How fast did lending grow quarter on quarter and year on year? | The bank’s definition, reporting basis, period and any portfolio transfers. |
| Total deposits | Did deposits keep pace with advances? | Comparable growth rates and the effect of large institutional or seasonal balances. |
| Deposit mix | What changed in current, savings and term deposits? | Mix percentages, pricing and whether growth relies on costly term deposits. |
| Borrowings and other funding | Did wholesale or market funding rise? | Amount, maturity, currency and stated cost where disclosed. |
| Credit-to-deposit measure | Is lending using a larger share of deposits? | The bank’s definition and whether liquid assets or other funding are excluded. |
| Funding cost | Is the bank paying more to obtain funds? | Movement in interest expense, deposit rates and funding composition. |
Then read the asset-and-liability maturity table. RBI disclosure material treats liquidity and maturity patterns as relevant information, so look for mismatches between when assets are expected to produce cash and when liabilities can mature or be withdrawn. A rapid expansion funded by short-term or expensive money deserves a different interpretation from similar growth funded by stable low-cost deposits.
Do not label a growth rate “good” or “bad” without its credit quality and funding context. Note the management explanation, but verify it against the balance sheet, cash-flow information where provided and the notes.

Step 2: Examine asset quality and loss absorption
Use both ratios and rupee amounts. A falling gross-NPA ratio can result from a growing denominator even while problem loans increase in absolute terms; a stable ratio can conceal fresh stress offset by recoveries or write-offs.
- Gross non-performing assets (NPAs): total recognised problem loans before provisions.
- Net NPAs: problem loans after the provisions and adjustments included in the bank’s definition.
- Provisions: charge recognised for expected or identified credit losses during the period.
- Provision coverage: use only the bank’s stated definition and check whether it includes or excludes particular categories.
- Restructured or stressed advances: capture separately when disclosed; they are not automatically equivalent to NPAs.
- Slippages, recoveries, upgrades and write-offs: determine which flows explain the quarter’s closing balance.
Compare quarter on quarter and year on year, using consistent definitions. Ask whether a change came from new slippages, recoveries, upgrades, write-offs, sales to an asset-reconstruction vehicle, currency movements or a change in the loan portfolio. RBI’s disclosure guidance identifies NPAs, provisions and credit concentration as key disclosure areas; see the RBI Notes to Accounts guidance, while checking current rules before relying on any specific requirement.

Look beneath the aggregate NPA number
Read sector, geography, product and borrower-group information. A bank can report an acceptable aggregate ratio while carrying a large exposure to one vulnerable sector or a small number of borrowers. Record large-borrower or group concentrations when disclosed, along with management’s explanation of collateral, guarantees and repayment conditions. Concentration information is specifically included in RBI’s disclosure framework.
Do not treat a restructuring announcement as proof that losses have disappeared. Determine how the exposure is classified, what provision has been booked and what future payments are required. If the filing does not disclose a requested detail, mark it “not stated” rather than inferring a favourable answer.
Step 3: Rebuild the earnings engine
Start with net interest income, then work through funding costs, fees, other income, operating expenses and provisions. Compare the direction of each driver with reported profit.

| Driver | Diagnostic question | Possible interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Interest income | Did it rise because earning assets grew, yields increased or both? | Separate volume from pricing and check whether the change is recurring. |
| Interest expense | How quickly did deposit and borrowing costs move? | Higher funding costs can compress the margin even when loans grow. |
| Net interest margin or equivalent measure | Is the bank’s definition unchanged? | Compare only like-for-like periods and definitions. |
| Fees and other income | What products generated non-interest revenue? | Check whether a large item is recurring, market-related or one-off. |
| Operating expenses | Did staff, technology, branches or other costs grow faster than income? | Investment may support future growth, but the near-term effect is lower operating leverage. |
| Provisions and recoveries | Did profit change because credit costs fell or recoveries rose? | Lower provisions can lift one quarter without improving underlying lending economics. |
Read the reconciliation between profit before tax and profit after tax, and identify tax-rate changes, gains on investments, treasury results, exceptional items and discontinued operations. A quarter with strong profit but weak core income, rising expenses and unusually low provisions should not be annualised without qualification.

It is an analytical framework, not an investor rating or a guarantee that a bank is safe. The framework is described in the RBI report on supervisory processes and approaches.
Step 4: Check capital and liquidity together
Find the bank’s capital-adequacy disclosure, including the total ratio and relevant components reported under the applicable capital rules. Compare each figure with the bank’s previous reports and the minimums that apply in its jurisdiction. A ratio comfortably above a requirement can still decline quickly if risk-weighted assets expand or losses consume capital.
- Check whether the numerator includes instruments with different loss-absorption characteristics.
- Track risk-weighted assets, retained earnings, dividends, equity issuance and any planned capital raise.
- Read liquidity coverage, cash and liquid-investment information where disclosed.
- Review contractual maturity gaps and management’s explanation for material changes.
- Look for restrictions on transferring capital or liquidity between a parent and subsidiaries.
Solvency and liquidity answer different questions. Capital absorbs losses over time; liquidity supplies cash when depositors and creditors demand it. Review both, and relate them to the funding mix and asset-quality trend rather than selecting one “headline” ratio.
Include material regulatory actions, qualifications or disclosure changes appearing in the filing. A public quarterly release will not necessarily contain every supervisory finding: RBI supervision also uses off-site monitoring and inspections. Absence of a statement in the release is therefore not proof that no supervisory issue exists.

Step 5: Audit the quality of the disclosure itself
Disclosure quality is an investment input. A clear table with definitions, reconciliations and period comparisons lets you test management’s claims; unexplained omissions increase uncertainty.
- Are all headline percentages tied to an amount and a reporting date?
- Does the presentation explain changed definitions or reclassified comparatives?
- Are segment, sector and concentration disclosures detailed enough to identify material exposures?
- Does the limited-review report contain a qualification, emphasis or unresolved matter?
- Are exceptional gains, sales, write-offs and recoveries separately identified?
- Do the investor presentation and statutory filing use the same numbers?
RBI’s Directions encourage more comprehensive disclosure when it materially improves understanding of financial position and performance. Treat a polished presentation as useful only after these cross-checks.
Step 6: Compare banks on a like-for-like basis
A comparison is meaningful only after you align the accounting and business context. Build a worksheet with one column per bank and one row per metric, then add a source, period and definition to every cell.
| Comparison block | Metrics to align | Context that can change the meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Funding and growth | Advances, deposits, deposit mix, borrowings, funding cost | Retail versus wholesale franchise, seasonality and market access. |
| Asset quality | Gross and net NPAs, slippages, provisions, coverage, restructurings | Loan mix, write-off policy, recoveries and portfolio sales. |
| Earnings | Net interest income, margin, fees, expenses, provisions, profit | Treasury exposure, one-off items and different accounting presentations. |
| Capital and liquidity | Capital ratios, components, risk-weighted assets, liquidity and maturity gaps | Applicable rules, subsidiary structure and planned capital actions. |
| Transparency | Definitions, reconciliations, segment detail and review-report wording | Different reporting calendars and levels of voluntary disclosure. |
Never compare one bank’s standalone quarter with another’s consolidated year-to-date result. Confirm that “net NPA,” “provision coverage,” “slippage” and margin measures mean the same thing. If a value is unavailable or definitions differ, write “not stated” or “not comparable” and explain why.
A repeatable quarterly worksheet
Use the same sequence every quarter so that changing market sentiment does not change your method:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Document control: save the filing, review report, notes and presentation; record publication and board-approval dates.
- Basis check: label standalone or consolidated, quarter or year-to-date, currency and units.
- Growth: calculate comparable deposit and advance changes, then inspect mix and funding costs.
- Risk: record gross and net NPAs, provisions, coverage, restructurings and concentration disclosures.
- Earnings: reconcile interest income, funding expense, fees, costs, provisions and exceptional items to profit.
- Protection: record capital components, risk-weighted assets, liquidity measures and maturity gaps.
- Comparability: repeat the same fields for prior periods and peer banks only after definitions match.
- Open questions: list every material item the filing does not explain; do not fill gaps with assumptions.
- Decision discipline: write what would invalidate your thesis, such as deposit outflows, rising slippages, falling capital or a qualification in the review report.
Warning signs that require deeper investigation
- Loan growth accelerates while deposits stagnate and borrowing costs rise.
- Profit increases mainly because provisions fall, recoveries rise or an exceptional gain appears.
- Gross NPAs fall but write-offs, sales or portfolio reclassification explain most of the movement.
- Net NPAs improve while restructuring or early-stress disclosures expand.
- Capital ratios weaken as risk-weighted assets grow, even though reported profit is positive.
- Large sector or borrower concentrations receive little quantitative detail.
- The presentation highlights percentages but omits amounts, definitions or comparable periods.
- The limited-review report contains a qualification or emphasis that management’s summary does not discuss.
- Standalone and consolidated results move in opposite directions and the reason is unclear.
None of these signals proves that a share is unsuitable. Each tells you to obtain the underlying note, ask what changed and test whether the explanation is supported by several periods.
How to turn the review into an investment judgment
After completing the worksheet, write a short conclusion with separate sentences for growth, asset quality, earnings, capital and liquidity. State which facts are established, which depend on management explanation and which remain undisclosed. Then consider valuation and your own risk tolerance separately; a sound quarterly update does not make any share automatically cheap, and a weak quarter does not by itself determine long-term value.
Use current filings for the decision. A general guide or older book can explain terminology, but it cannot replace the bank’s latest statements or local rules. For optional background, Harriman House lists Thomas Padberg’s 2017 hardback How to Analyse Bank Financial Statements: A Concise Practical Guide for Analysts and Investors, covering bank accounting, ratios, segment reporting, profit and loss, equity analysis and bank-stock analysis: publisher information. Its publication date means current filings and regulations remain the controlling sources.

Before investing, reconcile the business update to the filed results and notes, then follow the money from deposits to loans, from loans to provisions and from provisions to capital. Review liquidity and maturity gaps, test whether profit is recurring, and compare banks only when periods, definitions and reporting bases match. In India, RBI and SEBI materials provide the disclosure context cited above; investors in another market must apply that market’s current regulator and exchange requirements.
