You can change your NPS Pension Fund (the fund manager, or PFM) and your investment choice through your Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA) subscriber account or by submitting a physical request at a Point of Presence (PoP). For the All Citizen and Corporate Models, the usual limit is one Pension Fund change and four Investment Choice changes in each Financial Year. Those limits are not universal: your NPS sector, tier, employer arrangement and, from 1 October 2025, any Multiple Scheme Framework (MSF) lock-in can change what is available.

First identify exactly what you want to change. A Pension Fund change replaces the PFM managing your NPS investments. An Investment Choice change alters the investment approach or asset allocation, such as Active Choice or Auto Choice. You may have separate selections for Tier I and Tier II, so changing one tier does not automatically change the other.

What you can change in NPS

NPS uses two related but different decisions:

Pension Fund (PFM) change

Your Pension Fund, often called the Pension Fund Manager or PFM, manages the NPS assets allocated to it. Changing the PFM is an administrator-level instruction within NPS; it is not the same as selling units in a retail mutual fund and buying another product. The available PFMs and the process depend on your NPS model and tier.

Investment Choice or asset-allocation change

This changes how contributions are distributed among NPS asset classes and may change your investment pattern. In the common All Citizen Model description, Active Choice allows subscriber-directed allocation of up to 75% to Equity (E), up to 100% to Corporate Bonds (C), and up to 100% to Government Securities (G). The applicable scheme may also permit up to 5% in Alternative Investment Funds (A). Total allocation cannot exceed 100%, and the permitted assets can vary by model and scheme.

Auto Choice is a lifecycle approach. Its equity and other asset allocations adjust as you age rather than remaining at the percentages you initially select. PFRDA lists lifecycle options including Life Cycle 25, Life Cycle 50, Life Cycle 75 and Life Cycle Aggressive. The names indicate different equity trajectories, not a promise of a particular return or a recommendation for every subscriber.

Tier I and Tier II are separate choices

PFRDA states that a subscriber may choose different Pension Funds and Investment Options for Tier I and Tier II. Before submitting a request, check which tier you are editing. A Tier I change should not be assumed to update Tier II, or vice versa.

Check your NPS model before applying

The change limits and eligibility below are model-specific. Identify the arrangement shown in your CRA account, statement or employer records before relying on the standard All Citizen schedule.

All Citizen Model

For All Citizen Model subscribers, PFRDA’s FAQ lists one Pension Fund change per Financial Year and four Investment Choice changes per Financial Year. The FAQ says requests can be made online through the subscriber account or mobile application, or offline by submitting a physical application to a PoP.

Corporate Model

The Corporate Model FAQ lists the same frequencies: one Pension Fund change and four Investment Choice changes in a Financial Year. However, the employer may have selected the Pension Fund and asset allocation, or may have allowed employees to make those decisions individually. If the employer or corporate exercised the choices, applicable subscribers may revise them after one year (365 days), subject to the arrangement’s rules. Confirm with your employer whether you have individual control before filing a request.

Central Government and State Government arrangements

Government-sector NPS rules are not automatically identical to the All Citizen schedule. PFRDA’s Pension Funds guidance describes distinct government-sector fund arrangements and choice rules. For Central Government subscribers, the cited guidance describes changing the investment pattern twice in a Financial Year, alongside sector-specific conditions and older guidance. Use the current rule displayed for your government sector and CRA rather than importing the All Citizen or Corporate limit. State Government arrangements can also be notified or implemented differently.

NPS-Lite

PFRDA says NPS-Lite does not offer subscribers a choice of Pension Fund or asset allocation. Do not use the standard change procedure unless your account documentation confirms that the requested option is available.

Multiple Scheme Framework (MSF)

The Multiple Scheme Framework became available to non-government NPS subscribers on 1 October 2025. A selected MSF scheme has a minimum 15-year lock-in. During that period, you may move to common NPS schemes, but you cannot switch directly between MSF schemes. After 15 years, switching between MSF schemes or exiting remains subject to normal NPS rules. Check the scheme’s lock-in before selecting it or attempting a transfer.

How often can you change each choice?

The standard limits are expressed by Financial Year, not as a rolling 12-month period from the date of your last request.

NPS arrangement Pension Fund change Investment Choice change Important qualification
All Citizen Model Once per Financial Year Four times per Financial Year Online through the CRA account or app, or offline at a PoP, according to PFRDA’s FAQ.
Corporate Model Once per Financial Year Four times per Financial Year If the employer selected both choices, applicable subscribers may revise after one year (365 days).
Central Government Sector-specific Investment pattern described as twice per Financial Year in PFRDA guidance Use the current government-sector and CRA instructions; do not assume the All Citizen limit.
State Government Sector-specific Sector-specific Confirm the rule applying to your state arrangement.
NPS-Lite Not offered to subscribers under PFRDA’s description Not offered to subscribers under PFRDA’s description Confirm your account type before applying.
MSF scheme Subject to scheme rules Subject to scheme rules Selected MSF scheme has a 15-year minimum lock-in; movement between MSF schemes is restricted during that period.

For the All Citizen and Corporate limits, the regulator’s FAQ wording is that a subscriber can change the Pension Fund once in a year; its frequency table specifies once in a Financial Year. Your CRA may reject a request after the allowance for that Financial Year has been used.

Prepare before you open the change form

  1. Identify your sector and tier. Record whether the account is All Citizen, Corporate, Central Government, State Government, NPS-Lite or another arrangement, and whether the request concerns Tier I, Tier II or both.
  2. Separate the two decisions. Write down whether you are changing the PFM, the investment approach/allocation, or both. They may have different annual limits and separate fields.
  3. Check who controls the setting. Corporate subscribers should ask the employer or the organisation’s NPS administrator whether the employer selected the PFM and allocation. Note the date of any employer-made selection because the 365-day condition may apply.
  4. Count this Financial Year’s requests. Review your account history and acknowledgements. Count Pension Fund changes separately from Investment Choice changes; do not count from the date of your last change as though the rule were a rolling year.
  5. Check scheme eligibility and lock-ins. Confirm that the target PFM, asset class, lifecycle option or MSF scheme is available to your model and tier. If you are in an MSF scheme, check how long the 15-year lock-in has run and whether the proposed destination is a common NPS scheme or another MSF scheme.
  6. Gather account details. Have your Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), registered contact details and any employer or PoP information ready. Use only the CRA channel associated with your account.

Online procedure through your CRA account

PFRDA confirms that All Citizen and Corporate subscribers can use a web login and, where provided, a mobile application. CRA interfaces differ, so the exact menu wording may not be identical. Look for the account function labelled along the lines of scheme preference, change Pension Fund, investment choice or scheme preference change; use the label displayed by your CRA rather than relying on a screenshot from another provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to the CRA subscriber portal. Use the official login associated with your PRAN and complete any security or one-time-password step requested by the portal.
  2. Open the scheme-preference change function. Select the tier you intend to edit. If the portal presents Tier I and Tier II separately, process each tier only when you want both changed.
  3. Choose the type of change. Select the Pension Fund/PFM field for a manager change, the investment option or asset-allocation field for an Active/Auto or percentage change, or both if you have checked that each request is allowed.
  4. Review the permitted options. The portal should show the PFMs, asset classes and lifecycle choices available to your model and tier. If a desired option is missing, do not substitute a different option; confirm eligibility with the CRA, employer or PoP.
  5. Enter and validate allocation percentages. For Active Choice, check every percentage and ensure the total is 100% or otherwise meets the portal’s validation rule. Keep within the applicable Equity, Corporate Bond, Government Securities and Alternative Investment Fund limits for your scheme. Auto Choice normally requires selecting an eligible lifecycle option rather than entering a static allocation.
  6. Read the declaration and submit. Verify that the displayed tier, PFM, investment option and percentages are correct before authorising the request. A submission is an instruction to update your NPS preference; it is not a guarantee of higher returns.
  7. Save the acknowledgement. Download or record the confirmation number, date and submitted choices. The material available from PFRDA does not establish one universal processing time or one acknowledgement format, so do not assume that an on-screen success message means every later record has already updated.
  8. Verify the recorded preference. Reopen the account after the CRA indicates that the request is recorded, and check the scheme preference for the correct tier. Later, review the Statement of Transactions to confirm that contributions are being allocated under the intended preference and to monitor performance.

Offline procedure through a Point of Presence

If you cannot use the portal, or your model requires an assisted request, PFRDA’s All Citizen and Corporate guidance permits a physical application through a PoP.

  1. Contact the PoP linked to your NPS account and ask for the current form for a Pension Fund or scheme-preference change.
  2. Specify your PRAN, NPS model, tier and the exact change: PFM, investment choice/asset allocation, or both.
  3. Complete the form using the PFM and allocation choices available to your account. Do not leave the tier ambiguous.
  4. Provide the identity, signature and supporting details requested by the PoP or your employer arrangement.
  5. Submit the form at the PoP and request a stamped receipt or other acknowledgement showing the submission date and the choices requested.
  6. Retain a copy and check the CRA account and subsequent Statement of Transactions. If the recorded preference differs from the submitted form, raise the discrepancy with the PoP and CRA promptly.

How to decide whether switching is sensible

Use a decision process rather than choosing a PFM because it recently appeared at the top of a return table. PFRDA says NPS Trust publishes Pension Fund returns by asset class weekly, and your Statement of Transactions provides an account-level place to review performance. Past returns are not a guarantee of future results.

Compare like with like

  • Same asset class and period: Compare a PFM’s Equity result with other PFMs’ Equity results for the same period, rather than comparing one manager’s Equity with another’s Government Securities result.
  • Portfolio and risk information: Read the published portfolio composition, concentration, credit quality and risk disclosures for the relevant asset class.
  • Allocation path: For Auto Choice, examine how equity exposure changes with age. For Active Choice, test whether the proposed percentages fit your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses.
  • Eligibility and control: Confirm that the PFM, asset class and lifecycle option are open to your sector, tier and employer arrangement.
  • Lock-in and timing: Check whether you have already used the Financial Year allowance and whether an employer-made choice or MSF lock-in blocks the change.

Active Choice versus Auto Choice

Feature Active Choice Auto Choice
Who sets allocation? You set percentages within the limits for your model and scheme. The lifecycle design adjusts allocation as age increases.
Main decision Select asset classes and percentages, ensuring the total meets the portal’s rule. Select an eligible lifecycle option such as Life Cycle 25, 50, 75 or Aggressive.
Risk profile over time Can remain broadly as selected until you change it. Designed to change with age; the path differs by lifecycle option.
Key caution Higher equity can mean larger short-term losses. A lifecycle label does not make the option suitable for every investor.

Common mistakes and what to do

Confusing a PFM change with an allocation change

Selecting a new manager does not automatically create a new equity percentage or lifecycle strategy. Confirm both fields separately and check the resulting preference for each tier.

Using a rolling 12-month calculation

The standard All Citizen and Corporate limits are stated per Financial Year. Count requests within the relevant Financial Year, not merely the 365 days since your previous request. The 365-day language is a separate Corporate Model condition for applicable employer-made choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming the employer has not locked the choice

In a Corporate account, the employer may control the PFM and asset allocation. Ask the employer’s NPS contact whether employees have individual choice and whether the one-year period has elapsed.

Changing only Tier I when you meant to change both tiers

Because PFRDA allows different choices by tier, verify each tier independently. Submit a separate instruction if the portal or form requires it.

Ignoring MSF restrictions

A subscriber in an MSF scheme cannot switch between MSF schemes during the 15-year minimum lock-in, although movement to common NPS schemes is permitted under the stated guidance. Check the destination before submitting.

Expecting an immediate or guaranteed performance improvement

The frequency rules govern how often an instruction may be made; they do not predict returns or guarantee that a new PFM will outperform. Use published asset-class data and portfolio information, and keep the acknowledgement and Statement of Transactions for verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Relying on an old screenshot or an unauthorised intermediary

CRA screens, available funds and employer implementation can change. Use the login connected to your PRAN, your employer’s official NPS contact or a PoP. If the current screen conflicts with an older explanation, ask the CRA which current rule applies to your account.

After submitting: verification checklist

  • Confirmation or PoP receipt saved with the date and request type.
  • Correct PRAN, NPS model and tier shown on the request.
  • PFM name, investment option and allocation percentages match your intention.
  • Financial Year allowance remains available, or the request was accepted under the applicable sector rule.
  • Employer approval or the 365-day condition addressed where the Corporate Model requires it.
  • MSF lock-in checked, if relevant.
  • CRA account preference checked after processing.
  • Subsequent Statement of Transactions reviewed for the updated allocation and performance.

When to contact the CRA, employer or PoP

Ask for clarification before submitting if your account does not show a PFM or allocation option you expected, if a Corporate account appears employer-controlled, if a government-sector limit is unclear, or if an MSF destination is unavailable. Provide your PRAN, the request date, the acknowledgement number and a description of the tier and setting involved. Keep the original form or screenshot rather than submitting repeated instructions that could consume another permitted change.

Key takeaways

For the All Citizen and Corporate Models, the practical starting point is one PFM change and four Investment Choice changes per Financial Year, submitted online through the CRA or offline at a PoP. That statement is not a universal rule for every NPS subscriber: government-sector arrangements, employer-controlled Corporate accounts, NPS-Lite and MSF schemes require their own checks. Distinguish the PFM from asset allocation, treat Tier I and Tier II separately, save the acknowledgement and verify the later Statement of Transactions before assuming the change is complete.
