Plan upgrades apply immediately; downgrades begin on the next billing date. Payment and language options can vary by country, title, device, profile type, and whether a partner bills the account.
The steps below separate those controls so you can make the change without accidentally changing only one profile or one episode.

Before changing anything
First identify who bills the account and which profile you are using. A normal Netflix-billed account exposes plan and payment controls in the Netflix account area. If Netflix is part of a phone, internet, television, or another package, the partner may control billing, payment details, plan eligibility, or the date a change takes effect.

Language settings are profile-based, while the language menu inside the player applies to the title you are watching. A Kids profile also follows different persistence rules from an adult profile. If a setting appears to be missing, switch to the profile that should own the change and check whether a partner is managing billing.

How to change your Netflix plan
Change the plan in a browser
- Open Netflix in a web browser and go to the Change Plan page.
- Select the plan you want.
- Select Continue or Update.
- Select Confirm Change or Confirm.
The labels can differ slightly by account and device, but the sequence is the same: choose the plan, continue, and confirm. Netflix does not publish one universal current price table for every country, so check the amount shown on your own account before confirming. Taxes, currency, advertising availability, video quality, simultaneous screens, and partner-package terms can differ by market and offer.
When an upgrade or downgrade starts
| Change | When the new benefits start | Billing treatment to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade to a higher plan | Immediately after confirmation | Netflix may change the billing date based on the remaining balance or charge a prorated amount. |
| Downgrade to a lower plan | On the next billing date | You keep the higher plan’s features until that date. |
| Partner-billed or package account | Depends on the partner’s eligibility and timing rules | Use the partner’s account or support channel when Netflix directs you there. |
Netflix memberships are billed monthly on the sign-up date. Netflix does not offer annual, multi-month, or lifetime memberships. A plan change can therefore affect the next monthly charge rather than creating a new long-term contract.
Why the Change Plan option may be missing
Netflix lists four common reasons:
- The account is on hold.
- The account is paused.
- You are browsing from a Kids profile.
- A partner handles billing.
Switch away from the Kids profile and check whether another company bills the membership before treating the missing option as a technical failure. If the account is on hold or paused, resolve that status first. For a partner-billed account, the plan choices shown by Netflix may not be the choices your package supports.
How to change the Netflix payment method
Edit the current payment method
- Open your Netflix account.
- Select Manage payment info.
- Select Update beside the current payment method.
- Change the requested card or account details and save.
This edits the method already attached to the account. Enter the billing details exactly as your bank or payment provider has them; a mismatch can cause a declined charge even when the card itself is valid.

- Redemption: Online
- No Returns and Refunds on Gift Cards
Add a new method or replace the old one
- Open Manage payment info.
- Select + Add Payment Method.
- Enter the new payment details.
- Save the method, then follow the account’s controls to make it the method Netflix should use.
Netflix supports credit cards, debit cards, and virtual cards, as well as Netflix gift cards, PayPal in some regions, and partner billing. Availability is country-dependent, so a method shown in one country may not appear in another.
Temporary authorization holds
When you add or update a method, Netflix says some payment methods can create a temporary authorization hold. That is a verification amount rather than a completed monthly charge. The bank or card issuer may take a few business days to release it. If the hold remains after your issuer’s normal clearing period, ask the issuer whether it is still pending before submitting the payment details again.
Accounts billed through a partner
If Netflix is included in a phone, internet, television, or other partner package, contact that provider to change the payment method. Updating a card inside Netflix may not change the account that actually collects the subscription fee. Keep the package account number or billing email available when contacting the provider so it can identify the correct membership.

Can you pay Netflix with a gift card?
Yes. Netflix gift-card balances are redeemed on the Netflix account and applied to the monthly bill. Gift cards are useful when you do not want to attach a card or when you are giving someone subscription credit.
Payment availability is country-specific. A gift card purchased for one market may not work on an account registered in another market, and a partner-billed membership may have separate rules. Check the account’s available payment choices and the gift card’s regional terms before buying or redeeming it. The balance is consumed by recurring monthly charges until it runs out; once the balance is insufficient, Netflix may require another available payment method to keep the membership active.
Change the language used across a profile
Profile language settings control the display language and the audio and subtitle languages Netflix should prefer when those tracks exist for a title. They do not guarantee that every film, episode, or downloaded title has the selected language.

Change subtitles or audio for the title you are watching
Use the in-player controls when you need a one-title change, want to test another language, or the profile preference is not available for the program.
Open Audio & Subtitles
- Phone, tablet, or computer: tap or click the screen while the title is playing.
- Smart TV or streaming device: press an up or down arrow on the remote.
- Apple TV: swipe up or press the up arrow.
Open Audio & Subtitles, choose a language from the options shown, or select Other to see more listed choices. Close the panel and continue playback. The list is title-specific: a language available for one series may be absent from another, and the available tracks can change between seasons or episodes.
Why the language you want is not listed
Netflix determines available audio, subtitles, and SDH (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing) by title and region. Downloaded titles show only the two most relevant languages in the player, even when more languages may be available for streaming. SDH availability can vary by season or episode.

Why Netflix keeps resetting subtitle or audio language
Profile preferences are not universal
Netflix generally saves subtitle and audio preferences, but it does not save them for most Kids titles watched from an adult profile. If the same program is watched from a Kids profile, the preferences are saved under that Kids profile. This difference can make a setting appear to reset when the viewer has switched profiles.
Set a preferred audio language after a reset
If audio repeatedly returns to another language, Netflix recommends playing a Teens-or-above title for two to three minutes. That playback can establish the preferred audio language for future viewing. The recommendation concerns audio preference; it does not make an unavailable subtitle track appear on a particular title.
Distinguish a reset from title-specific behavior
Before changing account settings again, test another episode or title from the same profile. If the language appears in one title but not another, the difference is probably the catalog tracks for those titles rather than a profile failure. Also check whether you are watching a download, because the player may show only two relevant languages for downloaded content.

Which control should you use?
| What you want to change | Where to change it | Scope | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan level | Browser: Change Plan | Entire membership | Upgrades are immediate; downgrades wait for the next billing date. |
| Card or other billing method | Account: Manage payment info | Entire membership | Partner-billed accounts must be changed through the partner. |
| Usual menus and preferred languages | Profile language settings | Selected profile | The chosen track must exist for the title and region. |
| Subtitles or audio for the current program | In-player Audio & Subtitles | Current title or episode | Options differ by title; downloads show only two relevant languages. |
Use profile settings for a lasting preference and the player menu for a deliberate exception. If several people share the account, editing the correct profile is more important than repeatedly changing the player menu.
Troubleshooting checklist
The plan change will not complete
- Confirm that you are not in a Kids profile.
- Check whether the account is paused or on hold.
- Determine whether a partner bills the account.
- Review the confirmation screen for any prorated amount or billing-date change before submitting.
The new card is not accepted
- Re-enter the number, expiration date, security code, and billing address exactly as held by the issuer.
- Check whether the method is available in your country.
- Look for a temporary authorization hold rather than assuming a completed charge.
- If the membership is part of a package, ask the package provider to update the payment method.
Subtitles are missing
- Open Audio & Subtitles during playback and check Other.
- Test the same language on another episode because availability can vary by season or episode.
- Check whether the title is downloaded; downloads may show only two relevant languages.
- Remember that a title can retain translated dialogue subtitles even when subtitles are set to off.
The setting changes back later
- Verify that you edited the profile actually used for playback.
- Check whether the viewer is using an adult profile to watch a Kids title.
- For repeated audio resets, play a Teens-or-above title for two to three minutes as Netflix recommends.
- Use the in-player menu to confirm what the current title supports before altering the profile preference again.
What to verify after saving a change
After a plan change, check the account page for the new plan and the next billing date. After a payment update, confirm that the intended method appears under Manage payment info and watch for a pending authorization rather than treating it as a second subscription charge. After a language update, start a title from the intended profile, open Audio & Subtitles, and verify the available tracks for that specific episode.
