To change the principal place of business (PPOB) on an existing Indian GST registration, use Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Core Fields on the GST Portal. A PPOB change is a core-field amendment, so the application is subject to tax-officer approval. Do not use the non-core amendment form: the GST Portal does not permit business-address changes there.
Choose proof that matches how you occupy the premises—owned, rented or leased, or used with someone else’s consent—then upload the documents, complete verification and authorised-signatory submission, save the acknowledgement, and check the newly generated registration certificate after the amendment is decided.

What a GST principal-place change involves
The principal place of business is the primary location within the state where the registered person conducts business. GST Portal guidance describes it generally as the place where books and records are kept and where the head of the firm or top management is located. Changing that address changes a core registration field, not a routine profile preference.
The taxpayer files the amendment application in FORM GST REG-14. If the tax officer issues an order approving the amendment, that order is classified as FORM GST REG-15. The GSTN Welcome Kit distinguishes core amendments from non-core amendments and states that core changes require officer approval.

When this guide applies
This procedure is for moving the PPOB to another address within the same state registration. The material covered here does not establish the procedure for relocating a business to another state. A different-state move may involve registration, cancellation, or other consequences under the current CGST Rules, so do not assume that this core-amendment route alone completes an inter-state relocation.
Core amendment versus non-core amendment
The GST Portal has separate amendment paths. Non-core changes are designed for fields that can be updated through the non-core application and are generally auto-approved. The non-core manual expressly excludes the business-address fields for the principal place and additional places of business.
For a PPOB change, select:
Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Core Fields
Portal labels can be revised, so read the live menu and form headings carefully before proceeding. Selecting Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields will not provide a valid way to edit the PPOB.
Choose the address evidence before opening the application
Your documents should show both the new premises and your legal basis for occupying them. The most common error is uploading a document that proves an address exists but does not establish ownership, tenancy, or consent.
| How the premises are occupied | Evidence to prepare | What the combination demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Owned premises | A document supporting ownership, such as a recent property-tax receipt, municipal khata copy, or electricity bill. | That the registered person owns or is otherwise entitled to use the premises shown in the application. |
| Rented or leased premises | A valid rent or lease agreement, together with evidence supporting the lessor’s ownership, such as a property-tax receipt, municipal khata copy, or electricity bill. | Both the right to occupy the premises and the landlord’s connection to the property. |
| Consent or shared premises | A consent letter from the person allowing use of the premises, plus evidence supporting that person’s ownership, such as a municipal khata copy or electricity bill. | Permission to use the address and the consenter’s ownership or control of it. |
| Government-issued evidence | A government-issued document where it fits the premises and the category accepted on the live portal checklist. | Official corroboration of the premises or the occupancy arrangement. |
The GST Portal document checklist and registration tutorial list these categories as examples rather than a promise that every document will be accepted in every fact pattern. If your document is unusual, compare it with the current upload checklist before filing.
Owned premises
Use a recent ownership-related record that identifies the property and location. A property-tax receipt, municipal khata copy, or electricity bill is a listed example. Make sure the name, address, and property details are readable and consistent with the address entered in the amendment.

Consent or shared premises
Prepare a consent letter from the owner or other person whose permission supports your occupation, together with ownership evidence for that consenter. The consent letter should identify the premises and the business or registered person permitted to use them. A bare utility bill without the consent letter does not document the full arrangement.
Compare the three evidence paths
The right document set depends on the legal basis for using the premises, not on which file is easiest to obtain. For an owned site, the principal question is whether the ownership record clearly connects the taxpayer to the declared address. This is usually a single evidence path, although the live checklist may ask for a particular government-issued record.
For rented or leased space, the officer needs two linked facts: the taxpayer has a current right to occupy the premises, and the lessor has a relationship to the property. That is why the agreement and the lessor’s ownership evidence should be filed together. A utility bill in the landlord’s name may support ownership, but it does not replace the agreement.
For a consented or shared workplace, the permission itself is central. The consent letter should identify who is giving permission, which premises are covered, and which registered person or business may use them. The consenter’s ownership evidence corroborates the permission. A property record without the consent letter leaves the occupancy basis incomplete.
Government-issued documents appear as a separate checklist category. Use one only when it matches the premises and the category displayed on the current portal. There is no safe shortcut of uploading the same generic proof for every arrangement.
Step-by-step: amend the PPOB on the GST Portal
- Sign in to the GST Portal. Use the taxpayer account associated with the existing GST registration and confirm that you are working on the correct GSTIN.
- Open the core amendment service. Go to Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Core Fields. Do not choose the non-core amendment service for an address change.
- Open the principal-place section. Select the section that contains the principal place of business and replace the old location with the new premises details. Enter the address exactly as it appears in your supporting documents, including unit, floor, building, street, locality, city, district, state, and PIN where those fields are requested.
- Describe the premises accurately. Select the applicable possession or occupancy category. Do not choose owned merely because the business operates there; use rented, leased, consent, or another option when that reflects the actual arrangement.
- Attach the matching proof. Upload the ownership record for owned premises; the agreement plus lessor ownership evidence for rented or leased premises; or the consent letter plus the consenter’s ownership evidence for shared or consented premises. Add any government-issued document requested by the current checklist.
- Review the complete amendment. Compare the entered address, possession category, legal name, and document names. Correct inconsistencies before signing. An address abbreviation or spelling difference can make an otherwise genuine document harder to match.
- Complete verification and authorised-signatory steps. Follow the verification controls shown for your taxpayer profile and use the signing method available to the authorised signatory. The exact controls can differ by account and may change as the portal is updated, so follow the current screen rather than an older screenshot.
- Submit and save the acknowledgement. After submission, download or record the acknowledgement or reference number. Keep the submitted form and uploaded files with your GST records so you can answer a clarification request without reconstructing the application.
File preparation and upload limits
The GST Portal registration tutorial describes upload examples in PDF or JPEG format and states a 1 MB maximum for the registration upload it documents. That tutorial is not confirmation that the current amendment screen has exactly the same limit. Before submitting, check the live amendment page for its accepted file types, size limit, number of attachments, and any document-specific instructions.
Prepare scans that are legible at normal zoom. Include all pages of a lease or consent letter that establish the parties, address, term, and signatures. If a document contains multiple pages, combine them only when the portal permits it and keep the file within the displayed size limit. Do not obscure seals, signatures, dates, property numbers, or utility-account details that the officer may need to verify.

A practical file checklist
- The address in every document matches the address entered in the form.
- The document is current enough to support the present occupancy arrangement.
- Names and relationships are clear: taxpayer, owner, lessor, or consenter.
- All pages, annexures, signatures, and stamps are visible.
- The file opens after compression and remains readable.
- The file type and size satisfy the limits shown on the live portal screen.
What happens after you submit
A PPOB amendment is not treated like an instantly approved non-core edit. The core amendment is placed into the tax-officer approval process described by GSTN. The sources available for this procedure do not establish a guaranteed processing time, so do not rely on an informal number of days when planning a move, invoice change, or compliance filing.

Use the acknowledgement or reference number to monitor the application in the GST Portal. Keep an eye on portal messages and requests for clarification. If the officer asks for additional evidence, respond with documents that address the specific issue rather than uploading an unrelated replacement file.
If the application is queried
Read the query against the evidence you originally filed. Typical remedial actions include correcting an address mismatch, supplying a missing page of a lease, adding the lessor’s ownership record, or replacing an illegible scan. Preserve the original document set and submit a clear explanation with the additional file when the portal provides a response field.
If the application is rejected
A rejection does not prove that the business cannot use the premises. It means the submitted amendment did not satisfy the officer or the portal requirements in that case. Review the stated reason, correct the underlying documentation or data, and follow the current portal and legal process for a fresh amendment or any available response. Avoid filing the same incomplete evidence again.
Timing, cost, and professional help
The cited GSTN and portal guidance confirms officer approval for a core amendment but does not promise a processing period. Plan operational changes around the application’s actual status rather than an assumed turnaround. The same material does not establish a universal filing fee or any mandatory purchase needed to submit the amendment, so do not quote a fixed cost as part of this routine procedure.
A taxpayer or authorised signatory can prepare a routine application using the documents that match the premises arrangement. A qualified GST practitioner or tax adviser can be an optional referral where ownership chains are complicated, possession is disputed, or the business is considering a move to another state. Professional help is not established as necessary for an ordinary within-state address update.
Confirm the new address after approval
Once the amendment is decided, view or download the registration certificate generated after the change. GST Portal certificate guidance states that the updated address format appears in newly generated registration certificates.
- Open the certificate or registration-details view available for the GSTIN.
- Check that the principal-place address, PIN, district, and state are correct.
- Confirm that the possession or premises details shown in the registration record are consistent with the evidence filed.
- Save the new certificate and the amendment acknowledgement with your registration records.
- Use the updated registration details in future GST documents and internal master data only after verifying the portal record.
If the certificate still shows the old address, first confirm that the amendment has reached a final decision and that you downloaded a newly generated certificate rather than an older saved copy. If the portal record itself is not updated after a final decision, use the portal’s current help or grievance channel and quote the acknowledgement number.

Common mistakes that delay a PPOB change
Using the non-core route
The non-core application does not allow the principal-place business address to be edited. Start again from the core-field amendment service instead of trying to force the address into an unrelated field.

Uploading only a utility bill for rented premises
For rented or leased space, the listed evidence path is the agreement plus proof supporting the lessor’s ownership. A utility bill by itself may not show your right to occupy the premises.
Omitting the consent letter
For a shared or consented location, ownership evidence for the other person does not replace permission to use the premises. Include the consent letter and the consenter’s ownership evidence.
Entering a different address format
Small differences such as a missing unit number, different spelling, or an old PIN can make matching difficult. Copy the address consistently across the form, agreement, consent letter, and ownership record, while preserving the legally correct format.

The 1 MB and PDF/JPEG details come from a registration tutorial. Treat them as a preparation guide, then follow the limits displayed on the current amendment upload screen.
Planning around an unverified deadline
The materials for this procedure do not establish a current statutory number-of-days deadline or its exceptions. Verify the applicable CGST Rules and current GST Portal instructions for your circumstances instead of relying on a fixed deadline copied from an older article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recordkeeping after the amendment
Keep a copy of the submitted REG-14 application, every uploaded document, the acknowledgement or reference number, any clarification response, and the final registration certificate. Retaining the complete set makes it easier to explain why the address changed and to answer a later portal query. Store the new certificate separately from the older version so staff do not accidentally use outdated registration details.
Update internal records only after the GST Portal shows the approved address. Check invoice templates, customer and supplier master data, and other GST-facing records for the same spelling, PIN, district, and state. These internal checks do not replace the portal amendment; they prevent the old address from being reused after approval.

- Rented or consented premises include both the occupancy document and the relevant owner’s evidence.
- Files meet the format and size rules shown on the live portal.
- Verification and authorised-signatory submission are complete.
- The acknowledgement or reference number is saved.
- The final registration certificate has been checked after the amendment decision.
For a routine change, the key decision is straightforward: use the core amendment workflow and prove the real relationship to the premises. Unusual ownership chains, disputed possession, or a move to another state require separate advice under the current GST rules rather than an assumption that this address-change process resolves every issue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which GST form is used to change the principal place of business?
The taxpayer submits the amendment application in FORM GST REG-14. FORM GST REG-15 is the tax officer’s order of amendment, not the taxpayer’s filing form.
Can I change the principal-place address through non-core amendment?
No. The GST Portal’s non-core workflow does not permit editing the business-address fields for the principal place or additional places. Use Amendment of Registration Core Fields.
What proof is needed for rented GST premises?
Prepare a valid rent or lease agreement plus evidence supporting the lessor’s ownership, such as a property-tax receipt, municipal khata copy, or electricity bill, subject to the current portal checklist.
What if I use a family member’s or another person’s premises?
Use the consent or shared-premises path: a consent letter identifying the premises and permitted business, together with ownership evidence for the consenter.
Is the 1 MB PDF or JPEG limit guaranteed for an amendment?
No. Those details are stated in the GST Portal registration tutorial. Check the live amendment screen for its current file types, size limit, and attachment rules.
How long does GST approval take, and is a filing fee established here?
The cited guidance confirms officer approval but does not provide a guaranteed processing time or a universal filing fee. Monitor the acknowledgement in the portal and verify current rules for your case.
The Bottom Line
Change a GST principal place of business through Amendment of Registration Core Fields, not the non-core route. Match the proof to ownership, rent or lease, or consent; verify the live upload limits; save the acknowledgement; and confirm the address on the newly generated certificate after officer approval.
