Federal borrowers manage billing and AutoPay through their assigned loan servicer; private-loan borrowers must follow their lender’s own process.
Do not assume the change applies immediately. Check the confirmation, the loans covered, and the next due date. If the upcoming debit is not explicitly confirmed, arrange a payment through the servicer’s accepted method before the due date.

1. Identify the company that actually takes your payment
The correct website is determined by the payment recipient, not necessarily the company that originally approved your loan. A bank may have originated a loan while a separate company now handles billing, or a federal loan may have moved to a different servicer.

Federal loans
For most federal borrowers, the servicer handles billing and AutoPay. Federal Student Aid directs borrowers to that servicer for payment management. If you are unsure who it is, sign in to your StudentAid.gov account and check the dashboard for the current servicer and contact information. Compare the name and contact details with your latest statement before entering any bank information.

The payment destination can differ by federal loan type:
| Loan situation | Where payments are generally made |
|---|---|
| Direct Loans | The assigned federal loan servicer |
| ED-owned FFEL loans | The assigned federal loan servicer |
| FFEL loans not owned by the Department of Education | The bank, credit union, or other lender identified for the loan |
| Perkins Loans | The school or its designated billing agency |
Use the account for the entity listed as your current payment recipient. Updating an old servicer’s website will not change instructions held by a new servicer. If several loans have different recipients, update each account separately and keep a list of which loan is tied to which payment portal.
Private loans
Private lenders do not share one standard AutoPay interface, processing time, or interruption policy. Sign in to the lender or servicing company named on your statement, or call the number on that statement. Do not use federal-servicer instructions as a rule for a private loan. A private lender may require a form, a secure message, a phone authorization, or a separate portal for each loan, and only that lender can tell you when the replacement account becomes effective.

Before opening the change form, have the new account’s routing number, account number, account type, and the name of the account holder available. A routing number identifies the financial institution; an account number identifies your checking or savings account. Do not use the number printed on a debit card. Enter the details only on the authenticated website or through a phone process you initiated using an official number.
Check the new account with your bank first. Confirm that it is open, can receive electronic withdrawals, and has enough available funds for the expected installment and any other pending debits. If the account is newly opened, the bank may have restrictions or a short verification process. Keep a secure record of the last four digits you entered, the date of the request, and any confirmation number, but do not store full credentials in an unsecured note.
Check account-holder authorization
Some servicers restrict AutoPay to an account for which the borrower is an authorized account holder. MOHELA’s authorization agreement, for example, requires the obligor to be the bank-account holder. That is a MOHELA rule, not a universal requirement, so ask your lender before using a spouse’s, parent’s, or other person’s account. The other account holder may need to authorize the debit or complete a form, and a lender may reject an account that does not meet its rules.
Choose a safe change date
Changing close to the due date creates a risk that the old debit will be rejected, the new debit will not yet be active, or both instructions will be unclear. Start the change as soon as you know the replacement account. Keep enough money in the old account until the servicer confirms whether a pending debit will still use it and until any scheduled payment has cleared. Moving money out immediately can create an overdraft, a returned payment, or a late payment even when the online change appears successful.

Read the servicer’s cutoff and processing notices. A request submitted after a daily cutoff, on a weekend, or near a holiday may not be applied to the next scheduled withdrawal. Only the servicer can confirm the effective cycle, so treat an on-screen “pending” label as unfinished rather than as proof that the next debit will use the new account.
3. Change the saved AutoPay account
Labels vary, but the following sequence fits most online servicer systems.
- Open the official account. Type the servicer’s domain yourself or use a bookmark you created previously. Avoid payment links in unexpected emails or text messages. If a search result redirects to a different domain, stop and compare the address with your statement or the StudentAid.gov dashboard.
- Sign in and select payments. Look for a menu named AutoPay, Payments & Billing, Payment settings, or Bank accounts. Some portals put recurring-payment controls under a profile menu instead of the main payment page.
- Open the saved-account controls. Choose an option such as Manage, Edit, Modify, or Change bank account. If the system requires adding the new account before removing the old one, follow that order. Do not delete the old account until you know whether a payment is already queued against it.
- Enter the replacement details. Select checking or savings as appropriate and carefully compare every digit of the routing and account numbers with a bank record. A single transposed digit can send a debit to the wrong institution or cause a rejection.
- Review authorization and loan coverage. Read the authorization statement, confirm that you are permitted to use the account, and check whether the instruction applies to every loan, a particular loan group, or only a selected account. Consolidated dashboards sometimes show several loans under one login while allowing AutoPay enrollment to differ by loan.
- Submit and save proof. Complete any identity verification, submit the change, and save the confirmation page, confirmation number, or email. A screen that merely displays the new numbers without a successful-submission message is not proof that AutoPay changed. Note the date and time in your records.
- Check the next debit. Return to the payment page or schedule view and look for the next due date, amount, funding account, and status. If the upcoming payment is not shown as scheduled from the new account, contact the servicer and arrange a separate payment by the due date.
Some portals show a masked account such as “checking ending in 1234.” Compare those last digits with the new account, but remember that a masked display confirms only what is stored, not necessarily that the account has completed verification or that a debit is queued.
4. Where the setting appears at major federal servicers
These official examples demonstrate why menu names cannot be generalized across servicers.
| Servicer | Verified menu path or description | Timing or authorization point |
|---|---|---|
| MOHELA | In the online account, choose Auto Pay under Payments & Billing to add, modify, or remove bank accounts. | MOHELA says changing bank accounts may interrupt AutoPay for one to two billing cycles. Its FAQ also says the account must be one for which the borrower is an authorized account holder. |
| Edfinancial Services | Sign in and select Auto Pay from the navigation menu, then change the bank-account information. The same page can add an extra monthly amount or cancel AutoPay. | The cited instructions do not establish that Edfinancial uses MOHELA’s one-to-two-cycle timing. |
| Aidvantage | Its payment information describes AutoPay deductions on the due date and says saved payment instructions can be changed. | The retrieved page is on a sit. test subdomain, so confirm the production site’s current menu before relying on a precise path. |
Use the links below to open the servicer’s own instructions, then sign in through its current production domain:
- MOHELA FAQs
- Edfinancial Services FAQs
- Aidvantage payment information (test-subdomain URL; verify the live production address before using it)
5. Verify that the next payment will not be missed
Changing a stored bank account and successfully scheduling the next debit are separate questions. After submitting the change, verify all of the following in the account or with a representative:
- The new account is displayed as active or approved for AutoPay.
- The correct loans or loan groups are enrolled.
- The next payment amount and due date are shown.
- The funding account for that payment is identified, if the servicer displays it.
- Any confirmation or pending status has an effective date before the debit you are expecting.
- The account has not been removed from an interest-rate or other AutoPay-related benefit for which you remain eligible.
If those details are missing or contradictory, do not wait for the old debit to fail. Contact the servicer and make the payment through a method it accepts, such as the payment option presented in your authenticated account or the instructions on your statement. Record the date, representative, and confirmation number. Ask specifically whether a payment made manually will coexist with a pending AutoPay debit, so you do not accidentally pay twice.

MOHELA’s interruption warning
MOHELA states: “Changing bank accounts may interrupt Auto Pay for one to two billing cycles before the change takes effect.” Treat that as MOHELA-specific timing. Another servicer may process a change faster or slower. During that interval, monitor both the old and new accounts and check each billing statement. MOHELA also states: “Cancelling Auto Pay does not suspend payments that are or will be due.” Removing an old account therefore does not cancel your obligation to pay.

A servicing transfer can invalidate assumptions about saved payment instructions. Federal Student Aid explains that, after transferred loans are fully loaded into the new servicer’s system, the new servicer will provide directions for establishing online access and signing up again for services such as AutoPay. Some services must be reinitiated after the transfer.
Use the transfer notice and your Federal Student Aid transfer guidance to identify the new servicer. Create or activate the new online account, confirm that all transferred loans appear, and set up AutoPay again. Do not rely on an authorization held by the former servicer unless the new servicer expressly confirms that it carried over. Compare the principal balance, interest rate, payment amount, due date, and outstanding payment history shown by the new servicer with your records. Report a missing loan or an incorrect due date promptly.
During a transfer, messages from both companies may arrive. Use the contact information in the official transfer notice rather than an unsolicited message. Keep the old account funded until the former servicer confirms that it no longer has a debit scheduled and the new servicer confirms the first payment date.
7. What to do when the change fails
The site rejects the routing or account number
Recheck whether you entered a checking-account or savings-account number in the correct field and compare the digits with a bank statement or the bank’s official app. If the bank recently opened the account, ask whether electronic debits are enabled. Never guess at a digit or substitute a debit-card number for a bank-account number. If the portal continues to reject valid details, ask the servicer whether it accepts that account type or requires a paper authorization.
The new account is saved but AutoPay is inactive
Some systems let you store a bank account without enrolling a loan in AutoPay. Open the AutoPay enrollment or loan-selection screen and confirm that each intended loan is active. If the status remains pending, ask the servicer when the first debit from the new account can occur and arrange the next payment separately if necessary. Saving an account is not the same as authorizing recurring withdrawals.
The payment date is close
Do not cancel a scheduled debit merely because you entered a replacement account. Ask the servicer which account will fund the imminent payment, whether the debit can be stopped, and what payment method will be credited on time. Keep funds available until the servicer gives a clear answer and the payment posts. If you make a one-time payment, retain its confirmation and check that the recurring instruction remains in the desired state afterward.

A debit was returned or taken from the wrong account
Contact the servicer immediately and ask how it will correct the payment, any returned-payment fee, and the next due date. Contact your bank only through its official number if you need to stop an unauthorized debit or confirm whether a transaction is pending. Do not assume a returned AutoPay transaction automatically receives a grace period.
You cannot access the online account
Use the password-reset and identity-verification links reached from the official domain. If the account was transferred, register with the new servicer rather than repeatedly trying the former login. A phone representative can explain the current setup, but use a number from the servicer’s official site, statement, or transfer notice. Ask for a confirmation number and write down any deadline the representative gives you.
8. Security rules for a bank-account change
A legitimate AutoPay update does not require a paid intermediary, special software, or a physical product. Federal Student Aid’s preparation guidance says enrollment through the servicer is free. You should not need to publish or send your routing number, account number, password, or one-time verification code to anyone helping with an article, forum, or unsolicited message.
- Navigate to the official servicer domain yourself.
- Check the browser address before entering financial information.
- Ignore unexpected requests to “verify” payment details through a link.
- Use the servicer’s secure message center or official phone number for questions.
- Save confirmation records without sharing the underlying bank numbers.
- End a call and dial the number on your statement if a caller pressures you to act immediately or requests a fee.
9. AutoPay interest-rate reductions: check eligibility separately
The account change itself does not establish eligibility for an AutoPay benefit. Federal Student Aid’s payment guidance retrieved October 13, 2026, describes a temporary increase in the AutoPay interest-rate reduction from 0.25% to 1% beginning July 1, 2026, for eligible Direct Loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2012. The guidance describes the increase as temporary through June 30, 2028, provided the borrower remains enrolled and continues repayment.
The additional reduction does not apply to FFEL, HEAL, or Perkins Loans. Terms and enrollment conditions can change, and Federal Student Aid pages have displayed inconsistent deadline dates. Check the current official payment guidance before relying on a deadline or assuming that changing a bank account preserves the benefit. Ask the servicer whether AutoPay remains active after the account change and when the benefit will appear on your statement. The immediate priority remains confirming that the next required payment will be credited on time.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to change a student-loan AutoPay bank account?
There is no universal time. MOHELA warns that changing bank accounts may interrupt AutoPay for one to two billing cycles. Edfinancial and private lenders may use different schedules, so ask the applicable servicer for the effective payment cycle and keep the next installment covered.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use a spouse’s or parent’s bank account?
Only if the lender or servicer permits it and any required account-holder authorization is completed. MOHELA’s agreement requires the obligor to be the bank-account holder; that rule should not be assumed for every lender.

Does deleting AutoPay stop the payment that is already due?
No. MOHELA expressly says cancelling AutoPay does not suspend payments that are or will be due. Confirm with your own servicer which payment remains scheduled and make another accepted payment if needed.
What if my federal loan was transferred to a new servicer?
Create or activate online access with the new servicer after the transfer is loaded, confirm that all loans appear, and enroll in AutoPay again. Federal Student Aid says some services, including AutoPay, must be reinitiated.
How do I know the change worked?
Look for an active or approved AutoPay status, the correct loan coverage, the next due date and amount, and an identified funding account. Save the confirmation number. If the next debit is not clearly scheduled, contact the servicer and pay through an accepted method by the due date.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is changing the bank account free?
The ordinary update is handled through the servicer’s account or support channel. Federal Student Aid says enrollment through the servicer is free; a routine change does not require a paid third party.
Will changing accounts remove my AutoPay interest-rate reduction?
Not automatically, but eligibility and enrollment must be checked with the servicer. Federal Student Aid’s October 13, 2026 guidance describes a temporary 1% reduction for eligible Direct Loans and excludes FFEL, HEAL, and Perkins Loans.
What should I do if the debit comes from the old account?
Do not immediately assume the payment failed. Check whether it was already queued before the change, keep records of the transaction, and ask the servicer when the new account becomes effective. Keep sufficient funds available until the payment clears or the servicer confirms another arrangement.
The Bottom Line
Find the current payment recipient, use its official portal, update the saved bank account and AutoPay enrollment, and preserve the confirmation. Then verify the loans covered, the next due date, the funding account, and the effective timing. Because servicer rules differ—and MOHELA warns of a one-to-two-billing-cycle interruption—make a separate accepted payment whenever the next debit is not clearly confirmed.
