How to Change or Suspend Social Security Retirement Benefits After You Start Collecting

Yes—some people can stop Social Security retirement payments after they begin, but the available method depends on age and timing. If you have reached full retirement age (FRA) and are younger than 70, you can ask the Social Security Administration (SSA) to voluntarily suspend your retirement benefit. The suspension is prospective: it starts no earlier than the month after your request, rather than erasing payments you already received. Suspending can earn delayed retirement credits, and payments automatically resume at 70. You may also request an earlier restart.

Suspension is not the same as withdrawing your original application. Withdrawal is a limited undoing of the claim that generally must occur within 12 months of first entitlement, requires repayment, and requires a written request. Working while below FRA is a third, separate situation: the earnings test may withhold benefits under annual limits; that is not a voluntary suspension.

When you can suspend an existing retirement benefit

SSA’s voluntary-suspension option is for a person who has reached FRA but is not yet 70. FRA is based on your year of birth, so confirm your personal FRA with SSA before acting. Someone who is below FRA generally cannot choose this suspension procedure simply to earn delayed retirement credits.

Suspension begins no earlier than the month after SSA receives your request. It is not retroactive. A payment that arrives after you make the request may be the payment for a benefit month that occurred before the suspension took effect, because Social Security benefits are paid the month after the month for which they are due.

You can make the request orally or in writing. The national SSA telephone number listed for this process is 1-800-772-1213; check SSA’s current contact information and hours before calling. Keep a record of the date, method, representative, and any confirmation number.

How to suspend your Social Security payments

  1. Confirm the age window. Make sure you have reached FRA and are younger than 70. If you are unsure of your FRA or your 70th-birthday month, ask SSA to verify it.
  2. Decide which benefit you are suspending. Tell SSA clearly that you want to suspend your own retirement benefit. If you receive more than one type of Social Security benefit, identify each one and ask how the request will affect it.
  3. Contact SSA. Request the suspension by telephone or in writing. Ask the representative to state the effective month and explain how the request will be recorded.
  4. Check the first affected payment. Because the suspension cannot begin earlier than the following month and payments are made in arrears, reconcile the next deposit or check with the benefit month it represents. Do not assume that a payment arriving soon after your request is an error.
  5. Review related benefits and bills. Before the suspension takes effect, ask about benefits paid on your earnings record, benefits you receive on another person’s record, Medicare Part B premiums, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
  6. Save documentation. Retain your request, SSA’s acknowledgment, the effective date, and notes about any instructions for Medicare premium payments or family members.

What suspension does to your future monthly benefit

Delayed retirement credits

Suspending after FRA can earn delayed retirement credits for each month your retirement benefit is suspended. SSA describes the potential increase as up to 8% per year, plus inflation. That is a maximum description, not a promise of a particular dollar amount. Your increase depends on your original benefit, the number of suspended months, cost-of-living adjustments, and the point at which you restart. Delayed retirement credits stop accumulating at age 70.

Suspension is therefore most useful when you can meet your expenses without the monthly check and expect the larger later payment to be valuable. It does not create a retroactive lump-sum credit for months before the suspension began.

Automatic resumption at 70

If you do nothing, SSA automatically resumes your retirement payments when you reach age 70. You do not have to wait until 70, however. If you change your mind, tell SSA when you want the benefit reinstated. SSA says an elected reinstatement is effective the month after the request.

Effects on a spouse, ex-spouse, or other family beneficiary

Suspending your retirement benefit can affect other payments tied to your earnings record. In general, benefits payable on your record are suspended for the same period. That can include a spouse’s or child’s benefit based on your record, depending on the person’s benefit category and circumstances.

SSA identifies an exception for a divorced spouse who is receiving benefits on the suspended worker’s record. Ask SSA to apply the rule to your specific ex-spouse benefit rather than assuming every family payment will continue.

The reverse situation matters as well. While your own retirement benefit is suspended, you generally cannot receive another Social Security benefit, such as a spousal benefit, on someone else’s record. A suspension is not a way to keep your own benefit on hold while collecting a different Social Security payment during the same period.

Medicare Part B and SSI consequences

Part B premiums

When your retirement benefit is being paid, Medicare Part B premiums can usually be deducted from that payment. During a suspension, there is no retirement check from which to make the deduction. SSA says the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will bill you for future Part B premiums instead.

Arrange a payment method before the suspension starts and monitor the bills. Failure to pay on time can lead to loss of Part B coverage. Confirm the amount, due date, and available payment methods with CMS or SSA because premiums and billing instructions can change.

Supplemental Security Income

SSA states that suspending retirement benefits makes a person ineligible for SSI. If you receive SSI or are considering an SSI application, ask SSA how a suspension would affect eligibility before submitting the request.

Can you restart payments after suspending them?

Yes. You may ask SSA to reinstate your retirement benefit before age 70. The agency says the reinstatement takes effect the month after your request. Payments then follow the normal schedule, meaning money generally arrives in the month after the benefit month.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At age 70, payments resume automatically if you have not requested an earlier restart. Since delayed retirement credits stop at 70, waiting beyond that age does not produce additional credits under this suspension strategy.

Suspending a benefit versus withdrawing your application

Suspension leaves the original claim in place and pauses future payments. Withdrawal attempts to undo the claim as though it had not been filed. These are different procedures with different deadlines and financial consequences.

Option When it may fit Key conditions and result
Voluntary suspension You have reached FRA and are under 70, and you want to stop payments temporarily while earning delayed credits. Request to SSA orally or in writing; begins prospectively no earlier than the following month; payments restart at 70 automatically or the month after an earlier reinstatement request. Family benefits, Part B billing, and SSI can be affected.
Withdrawal of application You want to undo the original retirement claim and first became entitled less than 12 months ago. Written request and repayment of benefits already received. Other affected-beneficiary requirements may apply. An old-age claim can generally be withdrawn only once in a lifetime. If approved, the claim is treated as though it had not been filed.
Earnings-test withholding You are below FRA, working, and your earnings exceed the applicable annual limit. SSA withholds benefits under the earnings test; this is not a voluntary suspension. After FRA, SSA recalculates benefits for months withheld because of excess earnings.

What repayment can include in a withdrawal

Withdrawal is not a simple cancellation form. Because the claim is treated as never filed if approved, SSA requires repayment of benefits already paid and may require resolution of payments made to affected family members. The federal regulation also imposes conditions involving people whose benefits were based on your application. Ask SSA for the current withdrawal form and a written calculation of the amount that must be repaid before deciding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 12-month clock is measured from when you were first entitled to benefits, not from the day you happen to contact SSA. Once the period has passed, voluntary suspension—not withdrawal—is usually the relevant option for someone who is at least FRA and under 70.

Working while collecting: the separate earnings test

If you work before reaching FRA, SSA may withhold part of your retirement benefit when your earnings exceed the annual limit. This withholding is automatic under the earnings-test rules; it is not the same as asking SSA to suspend your benefit.

2026 situation 2026 earnings limit Withholding formula
Under FRA for the entire year $24,480 $1 in benefits deducted for every $2 earned above the limit.
Reaching FRA during 2026 $65,160, counting only earnings before the month you reach FRA $1 in benefits deducted for every $3 earned above the limit.
From the month you reach FRA No earnings-test reduction Earnings no longer reduce benefits under this test.

These figures apply to 2026 and can change annually. Verify the current-year limits with SSA when planning work or estimating withholding. SSA later recalculates benefits for months withheld because of excess earnings after you reach FRA.

Continuing to work can also increase your eventual benefit independently of the earnings test. SSA generally uses your highest 35 years of covered earnings; a new year can replace a lower year in that record. Ask SSA for an updated earnings record if you are deciding whether to keep working.

How to decide whether suspension fits

Suspension may be worth considering when

  • You are at least FRA and under 70.
  • You have enough cash flow, employment income, or other assets to cover the suspended payment.
  • You value a larger guaranteed monthly benefit later more than receiving checks now.
  • You have reviewed the effect on a spouse, children, or other people whose benefits depend on your record.
  • You can pay Part B premiums directly during the suspension.
  • You have confirmed that SSI eligibility is not part of your plan.

Suspension may be a poor fit when

  • You need the current payment for essential expenses or debt obligations.
  • A family member would lose an important benefit tied to your record.
  • You cannot reliably pay Part B bills outside the Social Security deduction.
  • You are considering suspension mainly to collect another benefit on someone else’s record; SSA generally bars that during your suspension.
  • You are outside the FRA-to-70 window, making voluntary suspension unavailable under SSA’s stated rule.

Common situations and the correct path

You started benefits six months ago and regret claiming early

Ask SSA whether withdrawal is still available because the first-entitlement date is less than 12 months ago. Expect a written request and repayment of benefits, and ask about any family-member payments that would also have to be addressed. Do not submit a suspension request expecting it to erase the original claim; suspension only stops future payments and is generally available after FRA.

You are 68 and want a larger check at 70

This is the classic voluntary-suspension situation. Confirm your FRA, request suspension, verify the effective month, arrange Part B payment, and ask SSA to confirm automatic resumption at 70. If circumstances change, request reinstatement for the month after your request.

You are 64 and still working

You cannot use the post-FRA voluntary-suspension procedure yet. If your earnings exceed the applicable limit, SSA may withhold benefits under the earnings test. Report work and earnings accurately and ask how withholding will be reflected in later benefit calculations.

You want to keep your own benefit paused while taking a spousal benefit

That generally does not work. During a suspension of your retirement benefit, SSA generally will not pay another benefit on someone else’s record. Ask SSA about your exact entitlement before suspending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions to ask SSA before submitting a request

  • What is my exact FRA, and am I eligible to suspend now?
  • What month will the suspension begin, and which upcoming payment covers which benefit month?
  • Will a spouse, child, or other person’s payment on my record be suspended?
  • Will I be barred from receiving a benefit on another person’s record while suspended?
  • How will CMS bill my Medicare Part B premiums, and what payment deadline applies?
  • Will suspension affect my SSI eligibility?
  • How do I request reinstatement, and what month will the first restarted payment cover?
  • If I am considering withdrawal, am I still within 12 months of first entitlement, what must I repay, and whose benefits must be addressed?

Key points to remember

  • Voluntary suspension is generally available only from FRA until age 70.
  • The pause is prospective and starts no earlier than the month after SSA receives the request.
  • Suspension can earn delayed retirement credits of up to 8% per year plus inflation, with individual results varying.
  • Payments restart automatically at 70, or the month after an earlier reinstatement request.
  • Family benefits, benefits on another person’s record, Medicare Part B billing, and SSI can all be affected.
  • Withdrawal is a separate, one-time, repayment-based procedure usually limited to the first 12 months after entitlement.
  • Work-related withholding under the earnings test is neither suspension nor withdrawal, and 2026 limits are $24,480 or $65,160 depending on your FRA timing.
