Do not assume that every holding can move unchanged or that ending advice automatically closes a brokerage account.

What “membership” might include
Financial firms use different labels for an ongoing relationship. “Membership” may describe an investment-advisory contract, a monthly or annual subscription, a brokerage account, or several services sold together. Each can have different cancellation rules.

Read the controlling documents before you give notice
Find the signed advisory contract, brokerage agreement, subscription or app terms, fee schedule and latest disclosures. Confirm:
- how cancellation must be delivered (for example, a portal request, email, letter or form);
- the required notice period and the date the service actually ends;
- how the final management or subscription fee is calculated, including prorating or a minimum charge;
- whether the adviser can continue trading, rebalance or debit fees before the effective date;
- whether a separate brokerage relationship remains after advisory authority is removed;
- how cash, dividends, interest, unsettled trades and residual balances are handled; and
- what the firm requires to close an account after assets leave.
Form CRS is a useful orientation document: it summarizes services, fees and costs, conflicts, standards of conduct and disciplinary history. It does not replace your signed agreement or account disclosures. Use those controlling documents for the terms that apply to you.
Save a copy of each agreement, Form CRS, fee schedule, recent statement and message about cancellation. A dated record helps if the effective date or final debit is disputed.
Choose where each account will go
Open or designate the receiving account before submitting a transfer. The new firm must be able to accept the same registration and the particular assets, or tell you what alternative it offers.
Check registration first
The receiving account generally needs to match the old account’s ownership and tax registration. Ask whether it can accept the exact form—such as an individual, joint, trust or retirement account—and whether any special paperwork is required for beneficiaries, trustees or authorized agents. Do not assume that a similarly named account is equivalent.
Check every holding, not just the account type
Give both firms a current position list. Ask about stocks, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded products, options, cash equivalents, annuities, private placements and proprietary products individually. A receiving firm may not support a particular fund, insurance contract, private investment or product issued by the old firm. An unsupported position might remain at the old firm, be transferred as cash after a sale, or require a separate process. Get the answer in writing before you authorize anything.

Compare the relationship you actually want
| Decision point | Questions for the receiving firm |
|---|---|
| Management model | Do you want ongoing discretionary management, advice without discretion, or a self-directed account? |
| Eligible assets | Can every current holding transfer in kind? If not, what happens to each unsupported position? |
| Account costs | What transfer, maintenance, trading, advisory, product and account-closure fees apply? |
| Minimums and services | Are there account minimums, planning services, monitoring, research or other conditions? |
| Conflicts and conduct | What does the firm’s Form CRS and agreement disclose about conflicts and standards of conduct? |
| Operational fit | Who handles the transfer, how are rejected items corrected, and how can you reach the transfer team? |
There is no universal “best” receiving firm. The right choice depends on registration compatibility, supported holdings, costs and whether you want advice or control over your own trades.
Decide whether assets should move in kind
In-kind transfer
An in-kind transfer moves eligible securities without selling them first. It can preserve your existing positions and avoid a sale caused solely by the transfer. It does not, however, decide whether those investments remain suitable, and it does not remove market risk while the transfer is pending.
Cash transfer or liquidation
If the new firm cannot custody a holding, the old firm or you may need to sell it and transfer cash, or leave that position behind. A sale can create a gain or loss in a taxable account, alter your investment exposure and trigger product-specific consequences. For retirement accounts, the tax treatment depends on the transaction and account type; do not infer an individual result from general transfer guidance.
Positions that commonly need special handling
- proprietary funds or other products limited to the old firm;
- mutual funds unavailable on the receiving platform;
- private placements and other illiquid securities;
- annuities or insurance contracts; and
- assets subject to restrictions, pledges, transfer limits or unsettled transactions.
Ask for a position-by-position plan: transfer in kind, transfer as cash after sale, remain at the old firm, or require a separate form. Do not authorize a blanket liquidation without understanding the consequences.
Ask about fees and consequences before submitting anything
Request current fee information from both firms. Potential charges include a transfer-out fee, account-closure fee, outgoing wire fee, trading commission, product-level redemption charge, advisory fee through the termination date or a fee for handling unsupported assets. A receiving firm may also have account, transaction or advisory charges. The contract and fee schedule—not a general industry example—determine what you owe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Issue | Why it matters | Who should confirm it |
|---|---|---|
| Final advisory or subscription bill | The amount may be prorated, charged in arrears or deducted from the account under the agreement | Old adviser and billing department |
| Transfer or closure fee | May be deducted before assets leave or billed separately | Old firm |
| Trading or liquidation cost | Selling unsupported assets can create commissions, spreads, redemption charges or market exposure | Both firms and the product provider where relevant |
| Tax or account consequences | A sale, distribution or incorrectly handled retirement transfer can have personal tax effects | A qualified tax professional for your facts; both firms for transaction mechanics |
General transfer guidance cannot determine your personal tax liability. Before selling or taking money out of a retirement account, ask a tax professional how the proposed transaction would be treated for your circumstances. Confirm whether dividends, interest, required distributions or other payments are pending.

Cancel the advisory or subscription service
Use the method required by the agreement and keep proof of delivery. A practical sequence is:
- Identify the exact service. State the advisory agreement, subscription or planning service you are ending, and list each affected account.
- Choose an effective date. Ask when management authority, recurring billing and access to the service stop. Do not assume that submitting a transfer form cancels advice.
- Request the final accounting. Ask for the final fee calculation, pending debits, open orders, cash balance and treatment of residual assets.
- Remove authority deliberately. Confirm when discretionary trading authority, standing instructions, linked-bank access or powers of attorney end. Keep any authority that is still needed to complete a transfer only if you understand its scope and expiration.
- Obtain written confirmation. Save the firm’s acknowledgement, effective date and instructions for any remaining account or unsupported holding.
If you want to keep the brokerage account but manage it yourself, say so explicitly. Ending advisory management and closing custody are different instructions.
Initiate the brokerage transfer through the receiving firm
Investor.gov’s guidance states: “All brokerage account transfers start and end with your new firm.” In practice, you normally complete the receiving firm’s Transfer Instruction Form; the new firm submits it to the old firm and coordinates the process when both firms and the assets are eligible.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Ask the receiving firm for its transfer form. Use its current form rather than drafting your own instructions.
- Copy the old statement exactly. Match the account title, registration, account number, tax identification information and mailing details. Small discrepancies can cause rejection or delay.
- Specify the transfer type. Identify whether you request a full account transfer, selected positions or cash only. List assets that should move in kind and disclose any position the new firm may not accept.
- Attach required documents. The receiving firm may require a recent statement, trust certification, death certificate, beneficiary paperwork or other registration evidence.
- Review authorization and submit. Check that the form names the correct old firm and account, then retain a complete copy with the submission date.
- Ask who owns follow-up. Get a case number and the transfer team’s contact information. The receiving firm ordinarily communicates with the old firm through the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS) when eligible.
Do not submit duplicate forms unless the transfer team instructs you to. Duplicate or conflicting requests can create avoidable confusion.
How long a transfer takes
The SEC’s 2014 investor bulletin described an uncomplicated ACATS transfer as taking approximately three to five business days from the new firm’s submission. That is a historical estimate, not a guarantee or a current service-level promise. Manual processing, rejected information, unsupported securities, unsettled trades, account restrictions and cash or dividend activity can make the process longer. Ask both firms for a current estimate for your exact account.
During the move, you may have limited ability to trade or withdraw. Before submission, ask about blackout periods, pending orders, margin balances, options approval and automatic deposits or withdrawals. Keep enough cash for legitimate final charges without creating an overdraft.

Monitor the request and fix problems quickly
Check the transfer status with the receiving firm and contact the old firm if it reports a rejection. Common preventable causes include:
- account title, registration or tax identification does not match;
- an incorrect or incomplete account number;
- a missing signature, date, statement or supporting document;
- an asset the receiving firm cannot hold;
- an unsettled trade, margin debit, lien or account restriction; or
- a full-transfer request when you intended to move only selected positions.
Ask for the specific correction, submit only the requested replacement information and record the date. If the firms disagree about responsibility, request written status from each and escalate through their transfer or supervisory complaint channel. Keep copies of all forms and correspondence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reconcile the new account after completion
Do not treat a “completed” status as the end of the job. Compare the first statement from the receiving firm with the last statement from the old firm.
- Match every security, quantity, cost-basis entry and cash balance.
- Check that the account registration and beneficiary information are correct.
- Verify that unsupported positions were handled as agreed rather than silently sold or left behind.
- Look for pending dividends, interest, distributions, sale proceeds or residual cash arriving after the main transfer.
- Confirm that recurring deposits, withdrawals, bill payments and tax-document delivery point to the intended account.
- Review the final old-firm statement for fees, remaining assets and a zero balance if closure was requested.
Keep the completed transfer form, both firms’ statements, fee confirmations and cancellation notice. A digital folder is sufficient; a dedicated organizer is optional, not required.
If you want a self-directed account instead of another adviser
You can ask whether the receiving account will be self-directed rather than managed. That choice changes who makes investment decisions and who monitors the portfolio, but it does not eliminate the need to check registration, asset eligibility, fees or transfer paperwork.
| Choice | You generally handle | Confirm before moving |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing advisory management | Agreeing to the mandate, monitoring service and fee arrangement | Discretion, investment limitations, conflicts, minimums and termination terms |
| Advice without discretionary management | Approving trades and implementing recommendations | How advice is billed, what monitoring is included and how instructions are documented |
| Self-directed brokerage | Asset selection, trading, rebalancing and ongoing monitoring | Available securities, trading and account fees, research tools and your own record-keeping responsibilities |
Choose the model that matches the help you need. Transferring an account does not itself provide investment advice or determine whether your current portfolio remains appropriate.

Situations that deserve extra care
Retirement accounts
Confirm that the receiving account has the same retirement registration and ask both firms how the transfer will be coded and reported. Avoid taking a distribution personally unless you understand the tax and withholding implications and have verified the procedure.
Joint, trust and custodial accounts
Expect additional identity, authority or trust documents. Every required owner, trustee or custodian may need to sign, and a receiving firm may use different registration language.
Margin, options and pledged assets
Tell the receiving firm about margin debit balances, options positions, securities-based loans or liens. The new firm may require separate approval or may not accept the position.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Illiquid or proprietary holdings
Get a written disposition plan before cancelling management. A position that cannot move may need to remain at the old firm, be liquidated under its rules or be transferred through a separate process.
Pending distributions and automatic transactions
Ask where dividends, interest, required distributions and scheduled withdrawals will land during the transition. Update linked banks only after confirming which account is active.
When to obtain professional help
Consider independent tax advice before selling appreciated assets, taking money from a retirement account, changing account registration or accepting a cash alternative for an unsupported investment. Consider legal advice for trusts, powers of attorney, divorce-related ownership, estate restrictions or disputed authority. Neither firm can determine every personal tax or legal consequence for you.
A concise cancellation-and-transfer checklist
- Inventory every agreement, account, owner and holding.
- Read the advisory, brokerage and subscription terms and save copies.
- Review Form CRS and confirm the exact fees, conflicts and services that apply.
- Select a receiving firm and verify registration and asset eligibility.
- Obtain a written plan for unsupported or proprietary positions.
- Ask about final fees, transfer charges, liquidation and tax consequences.
- Open or designate the receiving account.
- Complete the new firm’s Transfer Instruction Form using matching information.
- Submit the required cancellation notice and obtain the effective date in writing.
- Track the transfer, correct rejected information and retain every communication.
- Reconcile positions, cost basis, cash and late-arriving distributions against the old statement.
- Confirm the old account and recurring billing are closed or configured exactly as requested.
Bottom line
Cancel the service under the contract, but let the receiving firm lead the brokerage transfer. Verify account registration and each security before submission, understand fees and possible sales, treat the three-to-five-business-day ACATS estimate as approximate, and reconcile both statements afterward. Those checks address the most common causes of unexpected charges, rejected transfers and missing cash.
