For a cash-dividend calculation: ending value = ending shares × ending share price; total return ($) = ending value + cash dividends received − initial investment; and total return (%) = total return ($) ÷ initial investment × 100.
If dividends were reinvested, increase the share count each time a dividend buys shares and value all resulting shares at the end. Do not also add reinvested dividends as cash. The steps below show how to obtain consistent Costco prices and dividend data, handle splits and fees, annualize the result, and avoid the most common errors.

What Costco total return measures
A share-price-only result measures capital appreciation: the ending price minus the starting price, relative to the starting price. It omits distributions. A total-return result credits the shareholder for both price movement and dividends, so it answers the more useful question: how much wealth did this holding create under a stated dividend treatment?

That convention is not the same as comparing two unadjusted share prices. The 2023 Form 10-K comparison covers September 2, 2018 through September 3, 2023; it is an example of Costco’s reporting method, not a current performance result. Read the 2023 Form 10-K filing.

Before calculating, write down these assumptions:
- Exact start and end dates, including the time-zone or market-close convention if relevant.
- Starting investment or starting share count.
- Whether dividends are taken in cash or reinvested.
- Whether brokerage fees, transfer-plan fees and taxes are included.
- Whether the result is nominal dollars or adjusted for inflation.
- Whether there were additional deposits, purchases, sales or withdrawals.
Changing any of those assumptions changes the answer. A historical result is not a forecast; the SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin states, “Past performance does not necessarily predict future results.” See the SEC bulletin on performance claims.
Collect consistent Costco prices and dividends
Use the historical quote and investment calculator
Costco identifies its common stock as NASDAQ: COST. Its Investor Relations Stock Info page provides a Historical Stock Quote lookup and an Investment Calculator. The calculator asks for an investment amount, start date and end date; the quote tool supplies the historical prices needed to reproduce a calculation.
Choose a start date and an end date first, then use the same price convention at both ends. For a simple buy-and-hold example, that normally means the closing price on the selected trading dates. If a selected date was a market holiday, use the site’s stated available quote date and record the substitution rather than silently mixing dates.

Build the dividend record
Use Costco’s Dividend History page for the dividend amounts and ex-dividend dates. Its annual totals are based on ex-dividend date, so keep that convention throughout your calculation. A shareholder must own the shares before the relevant ex-dividend date to be entitled to that distribution.
For a position that never changed size, you can multiply each per-share dividend by the shares held on its ex-dividend date and add the results. If you bought or sold during the period, calculate the eligible shares for each dividend separately from your transaction ledger.
Check stock splits
The same Costco dividend page lists historical stock splits. A long-period calculation must use split-consistent data: either split-adjust both prices and share counts or use a price series explicitly adjusted for splits. A split changes the number of shares and the quoted price, but it does not by itself create a gain or loss. Mixing a pre-split share count with a post-split price can produce a dramatically wrong return.

Cash-dividend total return: step by step
This presentation assumes dividends were paid out as cash and were not used to buy additional shares. It is useful when you want to know the portfolio value plus distributions received, before taxes and fees unless you explicitly add them.
- Record the initial investment. Let
Ibe the dollars invested at the start, including any purchase commission if your definition of performance includes it. If you begin with shares rather than dollars, calculateI = starting shares × start priceand document that convention. - Determine the ending share count. With no trades or split events requiring adjustment, this is the original share count. With a split, convert the count to the end-date share basis.
- Obtain the end-date price. Let
Pendbe the selected historical quote. Calculateending value = ending shares × Pend. - Sum cash dividends. For each dividend, multiply the eligible shares on its ex-dividend date by the per-share amount. Let the total be
D. Include special dividends only when the history identifies them as payable to your holding and your chosen definition includes them. - Calculate dollars and percentage. Use
total return ($) = ending value + D − I, thentotal return (%) = (ending value + D − I) ÷ I × 100.
The formula treats dividends as part of the investor’s wealth even though they are no longer invested in COST. It does not claim that the cash was reinvested or that it earned a return after payment.
Illustrative cash-dividend example
The following numbers are hypothetical and demonstrate the mechanics; they are not a Costco performance quote. Suppose an investor buys 10 shares for $800 each, an initial investment of $8,000. At the end date, the shares are worth $950 each, and the investor received $120 in cash dividends during the period.
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Initial investment | 10 × $800 | $8,000 |
| Ending market value | 10 × $950 | $9,500 |
| Cash dividends | Given for illustration | $120 |
| Total return in dollars | $9,500 + $120 − $8,000 | $1,620 |
| Total return percentage | $1,620 ÷ $8,000 × 100 | 20.25% |
The 20.25% figure is a holding-period result under the stated assumptions. It is not an annual rate and does not include taxes, fees or inflation.
Dividend-reinvested total return
A dividend-reinvestment plan, or DRIP, uses each distribution to buy more shares. The SEC describes a DRIP as using dividends to purchase additional shares. Costco says participants in its stock plan may reinvest all or part of their cash dividends. See the SEC stock FAQ and Costco’s dividend-plan information.
- Start with the shares actually purchased and the initial cost.
- For the first dividend, calculate cash due:
eligible shares × dividend per share. - Subtract any reinvestment fee included in your plan terms, then divide the net dividend by the reinvestment price to obtain new shares. Fractional shares are common in plans, but confirm your plan’s rules.
- Add the new shares to the running share count.
- Repeat for every later dividend, using the share count that existed on that dividend’s ex-date and the plan’s actual reinvestment price.
- At the end date, multiply the final share count by the end-date price. That is the reinvested ending value.
- Do not add the reinvested dividends again as cash; they are already represented by the additional shares.
If you do not have each reinvestment price, a published dividend-reinvested total-return series can be used only when its dates, split adjustments and reinvestment assumptions match yours. Otherwise, use brokerage or plan transaction records.

Illustrative reinvestment example
Assume the same hypothetical 10-share, $8,000 starting position. Suppose two dividends are paid. The first produces $50 and buys 0.055 shares at a $909.09 reinvestment price; the second produces $50.275 after the first purchase and buys 0.052 shares at a $966.83 reinvestment price. The final holding is approximately 10.107 shares. At a hypothetical $950 end price, the ending value is about $9,601.65. The $1,601.65 gain already includes the two reinvestments; adding the $100 of dividends again would double count them. Rounding in this illustration is for readability, so a real account should use the exact fractional-share and transaction values.
How to annualize the result
Use an annualized return only when the holding period spans a precisely measured interval. First calculate cumulative ending wealth under your chosen convention. For cash dividends, that is ending value + cash dividends; for reinvestment, it is the reinvested ending value. Let that amount be W and the initial investment be I. If the elapsed time is Y years, the compound annual growth rate is:
annualized return = (W ÷ I)(1 ÷ Y) − 1
Measure Y from the actual start and end dates and state your day-count convention. For example, using elapsed days divided by 365.25 is different by a small amount from dividing by 365; consistency matters more than pretending the difference does not exist. A one-period percentage such as 20.25% in the earlier illustration must not be labeled “20.25% per year.”
When you bought or sold shares during the period
The simple formula assumes no intervening trades. With deposits, withdrawals, purchases or sales, the account’s result depends on when each cash flow occurred. Reconstruct the transaction history, including trade dates, quantities, prices, commissions and dividend entries.
- Money-weighted return: an internal-rate-of-return approach incorporates the timing and size of your deposits and withdrawals. It is appropriate for the return your actual dollars experienced.
- Time-weighted return: separates the security’s performance from the effect of your cash-flow timing by linking subperiod returns between external cash flows.
Brokerage performance reports may use one of these methods. Check the report’s definition before comparing it with your own calculation. For a taxable-account outcome, retain statements and tax records rather than treating the basic holding-period formula as personal tax advice.
Taxes, fees and cost basis
The formulas above are normally quoted pre-tax and before fees unless you add those items. To produce a net result, subtract commissions, plan charges and other investment expenses that actually reduced your wealth. SEC Investor.gov notes that direct stock plans and DRIPs can charge fees, so review the applicable plan or brokerage disclosures. Costco says its dividend plan is administered by Computershare; verify current fees and terms before inserting a charge. SEC stock-plan guidance.

Taxes depend on account type, jurisdiction, holding period and the treatment of dividends and sales. Investor.gov explains that brokerage statements can show dividends and reinvested income, and that cost basis generally includes the original purchase amount plus reinvested dividends, subject to adjustments. Use your own statements and tax records for a taxable-account calculation. Read the SEC guide to brokerage statements and cost basis.
Inflation is a separate choice. The calculations above are nominal dollars. An inflation-adjusted result requires applying a stated inflation measure consistently to the dates and identifying it as a real, rather than nominal, return.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparing Costco with another stock or an index
A comparison is meaningful only when both investments use the same:
- Start and end dates and the same treatment of non-trading dates.
- Cash or reinvested dividends.
- Split-adjustment convention.
- Fee and tax assumptions.
- Nominal or inflation-adjusted dollar basis.
- Annualization method, if the periods are being expressed as yearly returns.
Costco’s reinvested-dividend shareholder-return graph should not be compared with a competitor’s price-only chart. If one side compounds distributions and the other pays them out, the difference reflects methodology as well as investment performance.
Common errors and fixes
Using price change alone
Symptom: you calculate only (end price − start price) ÷ start price and call it total return.
Fix: add cash dividends or model each reinvestment.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Counting reinvested dividends twice
Symptom: you value the extra shares and also add the original dividend dollars.
Fix: choose one presentation. Reinvested dividends belong in the ending share count; cash dividends belong in the cash total.

Costco-specific history and source notes
Costco’s Investor FAQ says the company went public on December 5, 1985, at $10 per share before splits, and that it announced a quarterly cash dividend in 2004. Those facts provide context but are not inputs unless your chosen period begins in that history. Read Costco’s Investor FAQs.
The Investor Relations stock page displayed a quote of $959.44 marked last updated October 12, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. ET during the source capture. For a reproducible article or spreadsheet, prefer fixed historical start and end dates.
A reproducible worksheet
Create one row for every purchase, sale, dividend and split. Suggested columns are date, event type, shares before event, price or dividend per share, cash amount, shares added or removed, fees, and shares after event. Then:
- Enter the opening shares and opening cost.
- Apply each split to the share count and preserve the same economic value.
- For each cash dividend, record the eligible shares and dividend amount.
- For a DRIP, calculate and record the exact shares purchased and any fee; for cash treatment, leave shares unchanged and accumulate the cash.
- Enter the end-date price and calculate ending value.
- Show the formula, assumptions and source links next to the result so someone else can audit it.
This worksheet approach is safer than copying a single adjusted-price number when your account contains partial shares, trades or fees.
