To calculate your Social Security retirement benefit at 65, sign in to your my Social Security account, verify the earnings record, and run the Retirement Calculator for a start age of 65. Then compare that estimate with your own full retirement age (FRA) and with age 70. The estimate uses your covered earnings history and the date benefits begin; age 65 by itself cannot produce a reliable dollar amount.

Age 65 is not everyone’s full retirement age. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67, so starting at 65 is an early claim and the monthly benefit is lower than the FRA amount. Earlier birth years have different FRAs. Use your personal estimate rather than a generic average.

What you need before calculating a benefit at 65

Social Security’s calculation is personal. Gather these items before opening a calculator:

  • Date of birth: Your birth year determines your full retirement age and affects the adjustment for starting at 65.
  • Covered earnings record: Social Security uses wages and net self-employment income subject to Social Security taxes, not every type of household income.
  • Expected future earnings: If you will keep working, enter a realistic estimate rather than assuming your income stops at 65.
  • Benefit start date: The age you stop working and the age you file for benefits are separate decisions.

Your my Social Security estimate is generally the best starting point because it is tied to the earnings record SSA has on file. If you cannot use an account, the SSA Online Benefits Calculator lets you enter the earnings shown on your Social Security Statement.

Step-by-step: calculate the estimate for age 65

  1. Open or create your account. Go to SSA’s Retirement Benefit Calculation and Detailed Calculator page and sign in to my Social Security. If you do not have an account, retrieve your Social Security Statement and use the Online Calculator instead.
  2. Audit the earnings record first. Review every listed year. Look for missing wages, an incorrect employer, or self-employment income that does not appear. An error can affect the 35-year calculation, so resolve it with SSA before relying on the estimate.
  3. Determine your full retirement age. Use SSA’s Your Retirement Age and When You Stop Working guidance and the linked retirement-age tools. People born in 1960 or later have an FRA of 67; earlier birth years have different rules.
  4. Set the first comparison age to 65. The calculator will show an estimated monthly amount for benefits beginning at 65. Enter the month you actually expect to claim, because a month-by-month difference can affect the adjustment.
  5. Run the FRA comparison. Select the month you reach your own full retirement age. This gives you the unreduced baseline used to evaluate the age-65 amount.
  6. Run the age-70 comparison. Delaying retirement benefits beyond FRA can produce delayed-retirement credits until age 70. Compare the result with the age-65 and FRA figures rather than treating age 70 as an automatic recommendation.
  7. Update projected earnings. If you expect to work after the estimate was generated, replace the default future-earnings assumption with your expected annual covered earnings. Higher future years can replace lower years in the computation.
  8. Save the results and assumptions. Record the claiming month, projected earnings, and each estimated amount. Re-run the estimate after a material change in earnings or claiming plans.

SSA’s early-claiming guidance also explains how working while receiving benefits can affect payments before FRA.

Which Social Security calculator should you use?

SSA offers several tools. Choose based on how much personalization and control you need.

Tool Best use How earnings are supplied Important qualification
my Social Security Retirement Calculator Most people who want a current personal estimate and side-by-side claiming ages Uses the earnings record linked to your account; you can adjust expected future earnings Check the record for missing or incorrect years before accepting the result
SSA Online Calculator People who do not use an online account or want to enter the Statement manually You type in past earnings from your Social Security Statement SSA says the page was most recently updated in August 2026 and advises closing the browser afterward because entered information is temporarily stored locally while the tool is open
Quick Calculator A fast, rough illustration Makes assumptions about past earnings Not an exact personal calculation; do not use it as the final filing estimate
Detailed Calculator Specialized cases requiring more control over earnings and circumstances Detailed manual inputs SSA identifies version 2026.2, released July 13, 2026, as the current version described in its materials

For most workers, start with my Social Security, then use the Online or Detailed Calculator only when you need a manual or specialized scenario.

How Social Security converts earnings into a benefit

1. SSA uses covered earnings, not age alone

Social Security first reviews your earnings subject to Social Security tax. The agency indexes earlier earnings to account for changes in wage levels, then selects your highest 35 years of indexed earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years, each missing year is treated as zero. A later year with higher indexed earnings can replace a lower year, so continuing to work may raise the eventual average even after you have accumulated 35 years.

2. The highest 35 years produce AIME

The indexed earnings are averaged and converted into average indexed monthly earnings (AIME). AIME is the earnings measure used in the next stage of the formula; it is not your expected monthly check.

3. AIME is converted to the primary insurance amount

SSA applies a bend-point formula to AIME to calculate the primary insurance amount (PIA). The PIA is generally the amount payable at your full retirement age before any early- or delayed-claiming adjustment.

4. The starting age adjusts the payment

The month you begin benefits determines whether the PIA is reduced for claiming before FRA or increased by delayed-retirement credits after FRA. The exact adjustment depends on your birth year and the number of months between your start date and FRA. That is why a 65 estimate must be compared with your own FRA, not with an age that applies to someone else.

A dated formula illustration

The Social Security Administration’s 2025 Annual Statistical Supplement, Appendix C, illustrates the formula for people reaching age 62 in 2025: 90% of the first $1,226 of AIME, plus 32% of the next $6,165, plus 15% of AIME above $7,391. Those bend points are specific to that eligibility cohort. They are not a universal formula for every birth year, and they should not be used to manufacture an age-65 check without the person’s AIME and birth-year rules.

Work credits and the contribution base are different from the benefit formula

For 2026, one Social Security work credit is earned for each $1,890 in covered earnings, with a maximum of four credits in the year. Credits help establish insured status; they do not determine the size of a retirement check once eligibility is established.

The 2026 contribution and benefit base is $184,500. Covered earnings above that annual amount are not included in the Social Security taxable wage base and do not increase the benefit calculation for that year. Neither the $1,890 credit figure nor the $184,500 base is a shortcut for estimating your monthly payment.

Claiming point What it means What to check
Age 65 Often before FRA. For anyone born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67, so age 65 is an early claim. The early-claiming reduction tied to your birth year and exact start month; possible earnings-test withholding if you continue working
Your full retirement age The age at which the PIA is generally payable without an early-claiming reduction Your birth-year FRA, which can differ from a spouse’s, coworker’s, or neighbor’s
Age 70 The latest age at which delayed-retirement credits accrue; there is generally no additional delayed credit for waiting beyond 70 Whether the larger monthly amount fits your health, cash-flow, longevity, and other retirement-income plans

Do not assume that turning 65 automatically produces an unreduced benefit. Medicare eligibility and Social Security FRA are separate systems, and the Social Security FRA depends on birth year.

Working while receiving benefits at 65

If you claim before FRA and continue working, the retirement earnings test can cause SSA to withhold some benefits when earnings exceed the annual limit. The limit changes, so check the current amount on SSA’s Working, Applying for Retirement Benefits, or Both page before using a dollar threshold in your plan.

The first-year retirement rule

SSA describes a special monthly rule for the first year you retire. It can allow payment for months in which you are considered retired even if your total annual earnings later exceed the annual limit. Whether it applies depends on your retirement month, earnings, and work pattern; ask SSA to apply the rule to your facts rather than assuming it will.

What happens to withheld months

Benefits withheld because of the earnings test are not simply lost. At FRA, SSA recalculates the retirement benefit to credit months in which payments were withheld. After you reach FRA, earnings no longer reduce retirement benefits under this test.

Keep the calculator’s work assumption realistic

A calculator can show an age-65 amount based on continued earnings, but the result changes if you stop, reduce hours, or earn more than expected. Run separate scenarios for stopping work at 65, working through FRA, and working to 70. Keep the start age fixed while changing earnings so you can see which factor caused the difference.

Stopping work is not the same as starting Social Security

You can stop working and delay filing, or continue working after filing. Stopping work may leave your earnings record unchanged, while delaying the claim can increase the monthly amount through delayed-retirement credits after FRA. Conversely, filing at 65 while continuing to work may trigger the earnings test before FRA. Treat these as two independent choices in your worksheet:

  • Work end date: the month paychecks stop or change.
  • Benefit start date: the month Social Security retirement benefits begin.
  • Projected earnings between those dates: amounts that may replace lower years in the 35-year average.

Age 65 also creates a Medicare deadline

Medicare enrollment is separate from the Social Security benefit calculation. If you are not already receiving Social Security benefits, you generally need to apply for Medicare three months before the month you turn 65. People already receiving Social Security retirement benefits before 65 are automatically enrolled in Original Medicare Parts A and B at 65.

Employer coverage can affect whether delaying Part B is appropriate. SSA advises checking with the employer before making that decision, because the size and type of employer coverage can change the enrollment consequences. Do not assume that delaying Social Security also delays every Medicare action.

How to check and correct an estimate

If a year of earnings is missing

Compare the calculator’s record with your W-2 forms, self-employment tax returns, and pay records. Contact SSA promptly with documentation. A missing high-earning year can lower AIME, while a missing low-earning year may have little or no effect if 35 higher years already replace it.

If the estimate looks unexpectedly low

  • Confirm that all 35 years are present or identify zero years.
  • Check whether the calculator assumes no future earnings when you plan to keep working.
  • Verify that you selected the intended month at 65 rather than your FRA month.
  • Check your birth date in the account, because FRA and the age adjustment depend on it.
  • Make sure you are viewing a retirement estimate rather than a disability, spouse, or survivor estimate.

If the estimate changes after you revisit it

SSA updates records when new earnings are posted and may revise assumptions as your projected earnings or claiming month changes. Save the date and inputs for each run so you can identify whether the change came from a corrected earnings year, a different future-income assumption, or a different start month.

A practical worksheet for deciding what age to claim

After running the three estimates, write down the following in one place:

  1. Your birth year and the FRA shown by SSA.
  2. The monthly estimate for a start at 65.
  3. The monthly estimate for your FRA month.
  4. The monthly estimate for age 70.
  5. Whether you expect covered earnings before FRA and whether the earnings test may apply.
  6. The number of zero or unusually low years in the 35-year record.
  7. Your Medicare enrollment date and any employer-coverage question about Part B.

This worksheet does not tell you which age to choose. It shows the trade-off you must evaluate: an earlier, smaller monthly payment versus a later, larger payment, alongside work income, health, cash needs, taxes, spouse or survivor considerations, and other retirement resources. SSA’s calculators supply the personalized benefit estimates; the filing decision requires your broader household context.
