For a plain split that gives a new shares for every b old shares, multiply every affected tax lot’s pre-split shares by a ÷ b. Keep that lot’s aggregate basis unchanged, then divide the unchanged basis by the new share count to get the post-split basis per share. Perform the calculation separately for each lot when purchases have different prices or costs.
A stock split changes the share count and per-share basis, not the economic amount originally invested. Under U.S. federal guidance, the split itself generally is not taxable; the adjusted basis becomes important when you later sell shares and calculate gain or loss.

What a stock split changes
A plain stock split replaces each old share with a specified number of identical shares. A 2-for-1 split turns one share into two; a 3-for-2 split turns two shares into three. The arithmetic changes the number of shares in your account and reduces the basis assigned to each share, while the aggregate basis assigned to the affected lot remains the same.

That accounting result does not guarantee that your investment’s market value will stay constant. Trading prices can rise or fall after the corporate action, and market value is determined by trading rather than by the split calculation.

The method in this guide assumes an ordinary split in which you receive additional shares of the same security. A split-off, merger, taxable distribution, reverse split, or payment of cash instead of a fractional share can require a different analysis.
The formulas you need
| Item | Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Split multiplier | a ÷ b |
a is the number of new shares and b is the number of old shares in the announced ratio. |
| Post-split shares for one lot | pre-split shares × (a ÷ b) |
Apply the multiplier to each affected lot, not just to an account-wide average. |
| Post-split aggregate basis | pre-split aggregate basis |
For a plain split, retain the lot’s total basis. |
| Post-split basis per share | post-split aggregate basis ÷ post-split shares |
This is the basis used for each share in that lot when you later determine gain or loss. |
If the announcement says “2-for-1,” the multiplier is 2. If it says “3-for-2,” the multiplier is 1.5. A ratio must be read in the stated order: the first number is the new-share count and the second is the old-share count.
How to recalculate your holdings, step by step
- Collect the pre-split lot records. For every purchase or other acquisition affected by the split, write down the number of shares, acquisition date, and aggregate basis immediately before the split. The IRS generally treats purchase basis as the purchase price plus purchase-related costs such as commissions and transfer fees.
- Confirm the corporate-action ratio. Use the issuer’s split notice, your broker’s corporate-action statement, or another official account record. Do not infer the ratio from a change in the quoted market price alone.
- Convert the ratio to a multiplier. Divide the new-share number by the old-share number. For example, 3-for-2 becomes 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5.
- Multiply each lot’s shares. Apply the multiplier to that lot’s pre-split share count. Keep lots separate when their bases or acquisition dates differ.
- Carry forward the lot’s aggregate basis. In an ordinary split of identical shares, the total basis assigned to that lot does not change merely because the share count changes.
- Calculate the new per-share basis. Divide the unchanged lot basis by the lot’s new share count. Keep enough decimal places to avoid rounding errors; round only as required by your records or tax software.
- Reconcile with the broker. Compare your lot-level results with the broker’s adjusted share counts and basis display. Save the split notice and your worksheet with the original purchase confirmations.
Worked calculations
One 100-share lot in a 2-for-1 split
The IRS gives a 100-share example with a $15 per-share basis. Before the split, the lot has 100 shares and a $1,500 aggregate basis (100 × $15). A 2-for-1 split doubles the lot to 200 shares. The aggregate basis remains $1,500, so the new basis is $1,500 ÷ 200 = $7.50 per share.
| Measure | Before split | After 2-for-1 split |
|---|---|---|
| Shares | 100 | 200 |
| Aggregate basis | $1,500 | $1,500 |
| Basis per share | $15.00 | $7.50 |
Two lots bought at different prices
Suppose you own two 100-share lots. The first cost $10 per share, giving it a $1,000 aggregate basis. The second cost $12 per share, giving it a $1,200 aggregate basis. After a 2-for-1 split, each lot contains 200 shares. The first lot remains tied to $1,000 of basis, or $5 per share; the second remains tied to $1,200, or $6 per share.
| Lot | Pre-split shares | Pre-split basis per share | Aggregate basis | Post-split shares | Post-split basis per share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100 | $10 | $1,000 | 200 | $5 |
| 2 | 100 | $12 | $1,200 | 200 | $6 |
Averaging the two lots into one $5.50 figure would hide which shares belong to which basis. That can produce an incorrect gain or loss when you sell only part of the position.
A 3-for-2 split
Assume a lot has 80 shares and a $2,400 aggregate basis before a 3-for-2 split. The multiplier is 1.5, so the lot becomes 120 shares. The total basis remains $2,400, and the per-share basis becomes $2,400 ÷ 120 = $20. If a broker’s system displays a rounded amount, retain the unrounded calculation in your records and follow the broker’s documented precision when entering a later sale.
When the ratio does not produce a whole number
A multiplier can create a fractional entitlement. For example, 75 shares in a 3-for-2 split mathematically become 112.5 shares. The basic identical-share method establishes the share and basis calculation, but the reviewed IRS material does not resolve every issuer’s treatment of fractional shares or cash paid instead of a fraction. Use the issuer’s corporate-action notice and broker statement to determine what actually happened before calculating the final basis or reporting a sale.

Why lot-by-lot records matter
Each acquisition lot can have a different purchase price, commission, transfer fee, acquisition date, or special basis rule. A split does not merge those histories. Apply the multiplier and basis carry-forward to each lot independently, then total the results only when you need an account-level share count or basis.
When you later sell fewer shares than you own, the shares treated as sold depend on the identification method and the circumstances. The IRS discussion of split basis refers to specific identification and to FIFO when shares cannot be adequately identified. Keep lot identifiers, dates, and quantities so that your sale records show which post-split shares came from which pre-split lot.
Account totals versus lot totals
After recalculating every lot, you may add the post-split quantities to confirm the account-wide share count. You may also add the carried-forward aggregate bases to confirm the total basis of the unsold position. Those totals are useful checks, but they do not replace the lot detail.
For example, two lots that become 200 shares each produce 400 shares in the account. Their combined basis is $2,200, but the individual per-share bases remain $5 and $6. If you sell 100 shares and can identify them as coming from the first lot, the relevant basis is tied to that lot—not automatically to a $5.50 account average. Preserve the allocation that supports the shares reported as sold.

What to use as the starting basis
For a normal purchase, start with the amount paid for the shares and add purchase-related costs such as commissions and recording or transfer fees when applicable. Use the aggregate amount for the lot, not merely the headline trade price multiplied by shares if the confirmation shows additional purchase costs.
Not every holding begins with a purchase. Shares received by gift, inheritance, transfer, compensation, reorganization, or another non-purchase event can follow different basis rules. IRS Topic 703, “Basis of assets,” provides general background for those situations. Do not substitute a simple purchase-price calculation when your original records identify a different basis rule.
Federal tax treatment and a later sale
According to the IRS guidance on stock splits, receiving additional identical shares in a plain split is not, by itself, a taxable event. The split changes the basis allocation among shares; it does not itself create taxable income or increase the lot’s aggregate basis.

The adjusted basis matters when you dispose of shares. Your gain or loss calculation compares the amount realized on the sale with the basis of the specific shares treated as sold. IRS Instructions for Form 8949 (2025) tell taxpayers to adjust stock basis for splits when relevant to a reported sale, and IRS Publication 550 (2025), “Investment Income and Expenses,” discusses stock-split basis treatment.
Broker reporting is useful but not conclusive. A broker may display an account-wide average, a lot-level figure, or a temporary value while a corporate action is being processed. Before filing a return for a sale, compare the Form 1099-B information and the broker’s lot history with your original confirmations and split worksheet. If the reported basis is wrong, follow the current Form 8949 instructions for making the appropriate adjustment rather than silently accepting an incorrect number.
Reconciling a broker display that does not match
- Check the ratio and effective date. Make sure you used the same split and the same affected security shown in the broker’s notice.
- Compare share totals first. Recalculate every lot’s post-split shares and add them. A share-count mismatch often identifies a missing lot, an unprocessed fractional entitlement, or a separate corporate action.
- Compare aggregate basis next. Add the pre-split aggregate bases and verify that your plain-split calculation carries those amounts forward before any later sale or fee.
- Inspect lot allocation. Confirm that the broker did not collapse lots with different bases into a single average display. Request a detailed lot report if the account interface offers only an average.
- Check for cash or another event. A cash-in-lieu payment, merger, split-off, or reverse split may mean the ordinary identical-share formula is not sufficient.
- Preserve an evidence file. Keep purchase confirmations, the issuer’s split notice, broker statements before and after the action, and the dated worksheet used to reach your numbers.
If the records still conflict, ask the broker for its corporate-action accounting and consult a tax professional before reporting a disposition. Do not overwrite the original records to make the displayed average appear to agree.
A practical worksheet
A spreadsheet is optional; a paper ledger can work if it preserves the same information. One row per lot is the safest layout. No paid calculator or specialized product is required to perform the arithmetic.
| Column | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Security | Issuer and ticker or other account identifier shown on the statement. |
| Original acquisition date | Date on the purchase confirmation or other acquisition record. |
| Pre-split shares | Shares in that lot immediately before the split. |
| Pre-split aggregate basis | Purchase amount plus applicable purchase-related costs, or the documented non-purchase basis. |
| Split ratio | For example, 2-for-1 or 3-for-2, copied from the notice. |
| Multiplier | New-share number divided by old-share number. |
| Post-split shares | Pre-split shares multiplied by the multiplier. |
| Post-split aggregate basis | The carried-forward lot basis for a plain split, with any unusual event documented separately. |
| Post-split basis per share | Post-split aggregate basis divided by post-split shares. |
| Source documents | File names or locations for confirmations, statements, and the corporate-action notice. |
Useful validation checks are simple: the total post-split shares should equal total pre-split shares multiplied by the ratio; each lot’s aggregate basis should equal its pre-split amount for a plain split; and each lot’s basis per share multiplied by its post-split shares should return the aggregate basis, subject to rounding.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Doubling both shares and total basis. A 2-for-1 split doubles the shares, not the lot’s aggregate basis.
- Dividing shares instead of multiplying. Use new shares divided by old shares as the multiplier. A 3-for-2 split increases shares by 1.5 times.
- Using one average for every lot. Recalculate separately when acquisition prices or documented bases differ.
- Dropping commissions or transfer fees. Recheck the original confirmation so the starting aggregate basis is complete.
- Rounding too early. Keep extra decimal places in the worksheet, especially when the ratio or share count creates fractions.
- Treating a reverse split as an ordinary split. A reverse split reduces the share count and may create fractional shares or cash; read its specific notice.
- Assuming every corporate action is a plain split. A merger, split-off, taxable distribution, or cash-in-lieu payment can require allocation rules that are not covered by this formula.
- Discarding pre-split records. The later sale calculation depends on the original lot history and the adjustment supporting it.
When this method does not answer the whole question
This calculation is designed for U.S. federal treatment of a straightforward split into additional identical shares. State tax rules, non-U.S. tax systems, retirement-account reporting, employer equity plans, gifts, inheritances, and other special accounts can add requirements. The IRS sources cited here do not resolve every fractional-share or cash-in-lieu outcome.
For an unusual event, obtain the issuer’s complete corporate-action statement, identify whether cash or a different security was received, and determine which basis rules apply before entering a sale on a tax return. Use the current-year IRS instructions and professional advice where the event is not a plain split.

How to decide whether you need professional help
A calculator or spreadsheet is sufficient when the event is a documented plain split, every lot is known, and no cash or different security was received. A tax-preparation service becomes relevant later if you sell shares and need help reconciling Form 1099-B, Form 8949, and multiple lot selections. Paid software is optional for the split arithmetic itself.
Consider asking a tax professional to review the transaction when records are missing, the account contains gifted or inherited shares, the broker reports a different corporate action, fractional shares were paid in cash, or the event involved a merger, split-off, compensation plan, or non-U.S. reporting requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a stock split double my investment or total cost basis?
No. A plain split increases the number of shares and reduces the basis per share, while the affected lot’s aggregate basis stays the same. Market value can still change after the split because the stock continues to trade.
What is the formula for a 2-for-1 split?
Multiply each lot’s pre-split share count by 2. Keep that lot’s total basis unchanged and divide it by the new share count. A 100-share lot with $1,500 basis becomes 200 shares with a $7.50 basis per share.
How do I calculate a 3-for-2 split?
Use a multiplier of 3 ÷ 2, or 1.5. An 80-share lot becomes 120 shares. If its aggregate basis was $2,400, its new basis per share is $20.
What if I bought the same stock at different prices?
Recalculate every acquisition lot separately. Keep each lot’s shares, acquisition date, aggregate basis, and post-split per-share basis distinct. Do not replace different lots with one average when you may later sell only part of the position.

Is receiving split shares taxable immediately?
The IRS says receiving additional identical shares in a plain split is not, by itself, a taxable event. The adjusted basis is used later to calculate gain or loss when shares are disposed of.
What if my broker’s basis does not match my worksheet?
Verify the ratio, effective date, security, share totals, and lot allocation. Request a detailed lot report, compare the broker’s records with purchase confirmations and the issuer notice, and follow current Form 8949 instructions if a later sale requires a correction.
How are fractional shares or cash in lieu handled?
The ordinary split formula does not resolve every issuer’s treatment. Check the issuer’s corporate-action notice and broker statement to determine whether a fraction was credited, sold, or paid in cash, then obtain current tax guidance for the resulting basis and reporting.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use an account-wide average basis?
An average can be a rough account-level check, but it should not replace lot records when bases differ. The shares treated as sold may depend on specific identification or FIFO, so preserve the basis attached to each lot.
Is a reverse split calculated the same way?
No. A reverse split reduces the share count and can create fractional shares or cash. Do not apply the ordinary additional-identical-shares method without reviewing the specific corporate-action terms.
The Bottom Line
For an ordinary stock split, multiply each lot’s shares by the announced new-to-old ratio, leave that lot’s aggregate basis unchanged, and divide by the new share count for the revised per-share basis. Keep every lot and supporting record intact because the adjustment matters when you eventually sell.
