Calculate it by dividing the balance used under your agreement by the lender’s current accepted collateral value, then multiplying by 100. The denominator is not automatically a jewellery-shop quote, retail value or headline market price.
In India, the Reserve Bank of India’s 2025 directions also prescribe how lenders value eligible gold and require the applicable LTV to be maintained during the loan. Your agreement and lender policy determine what happens if the ratio exceeds its limit.

The LTV calculation after a price decline
Use this formula:
LTV (%) = relevant outstanding loan amount ÷ lender-accepted current value of pledged collateral × 100.
The calculation has two moving parts. The numerator is the debt figure that your contract and applicable rules say to use. The denominator is the lender’s accepted value for the eligible gold content on the relevant valuation date. If the denominator decreases while the numerator stays unchanged, the percentage increases.

What counts as the loan amount
For an instalment or other structure, obtain the current outstanding amount specified for LTV purposes. Ask whether accrued interest, fees or other amounts are included. For a bullet repayment loan, the RBI’s 2025 directions define LTV using the total amount repayable at maturity, rather than simply the principal originally disbursed. Do not substitute an estimate from a consumer app for the figure in the statement, agreement or lender notice.
What counts as collateral value
Use the lender’s accepted intrinsic value of the eligible gold in the pledged items. Jewellery retail prices can include workmanship, taxes, brand premiums and stones; those elements do not automatically belong in the collateral denominator. The lender’s assay records purity, gross weight, net gold weight and deductions for non-gold materials. A market quote for 24-carat bullion is also not necessarily the value assigned to jewellery of a different purity.
Step-by-step method for your account
- Find the correct balance. Download the latest statement and read the loan agreement for the amount used in LTV. Note whether interest accrued since the last statement is included.
- Check whether the loan is bullet repayment. If it is, identify the total amount repayable at maturity that the lender uses for its LTV calculation.
- Obtain the lender’s current collateral value. Ask for the valuation date, reference price, purity adjustment and deductions. A price seen in a newspaper or jewellery shop is only an indication until the lender confirms its accepted figure.
- Convert both figures to the same currency and date. Do not combine yesterday’s balance with a collateral value from an older notice unless the lender says that is the required comparison.
- Divide the relevant balance by the accepted collateral value. Multiply the result by 100 and round only as your lender does. Keep the unrounded figures in your notes so you can check a threshold accurately.
- Compare the result with the applicable limit. Identify the loan purpose, total consumption-loan amount per borrower where relevant, and the maximum LTV in your agreement and current policy.
- Read the breach process before acting. If the ratio is above the limit, follow the written notice, deadline and remedy supplied by the lender. Do not assume that a particular remedy applies to every institution.
Worked examples
The following arithmetic illustrates the mechanics only; it is not a quotation of a current gold price or a prediction of a lender’s account treatment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Situation | Relevant balance | Accepted collateral value | Calculation | LTV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| At sanction | ₹60,000 | ₹100,000 | ₹60,000 ÷ ₹100,000 × 100 | 60% |
| After accepted value falls | ₹60,000 | ₹80,000 | ₹60,000 ÷ ₹80,000 × 100 | 75% |
| After a repayment as well | ₹55,000 | ₹80,000 | ₹55,000 ÷ ₹80,000 × 100 | 68.75% |
| Bullet loan using maturity amount | ₹66,000 repayable at maturity | ₹80,000 | ₹66,000 ÷ ₹80,000 × 100 | 82.5% |
The second row shows why an unchanged debt produces a higher LTV after a fall in accepted value. The third row shows that a repayment can reduce the ratio even when the collateral value has not changed. The last row demonstrates why using the original principal for a bullet loan can understate the LTV when the contract requires the maturity amount.

How the RBI’s 2025 valuation rule affects the denominator
The Reserve Bank of India (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025, dated June 6, 2025, use a specified reference-price method. A lender takes the lower of:
- the average closing price over the preceding 30 days; or
- the preceding day’s closing price.
The price must correspond to the purity of the pledged gold or silver. The reference may come from the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd. or a commodity exchange regulated by SEBI. If a closing price for the exact purity is unavailable, the lender uses the nearest available purity and adjusts proportionately for the actual purity.
Only eligible intrinsic metal value is included
The directions limit the collateral calculation to the intrinsic value of gold or silver in eligible collateral. Stones, gems and other non-metal cost elements are excluded. That is why the lender’s net gold weight can be materially lower than the item’s gross weight. Fastenings, solder and other non-gold parts may also be deducted under the lender’s assay procedure.
Why your own price estimate may differ
A consumer quote may use a live spot price, a particular purity, or a retail selling rate. The RBI method instead uses a lower-of-two reference and a documented purity adjustment. The lender may therefore assign a value that differs from both the number on a financial website and the amount a shop says it would charge a customer.

Applicable consumption-loan LTV ceilings
Under the 2025 directions, the following maximum LTV bands apply to consumption loans, based on the total consumption-loan amount per borrower:
| Total consumption-loan amount per borrower | Maximum LTV | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹2.5 lakh | 85% | Regulatory ceiling for this consumption-loan band |
| Above ₹2.5 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh | 80% | Regulatory ceiling for this consumption-loan band |
| Above ₹5 lakh | 75% | Regulatory ceiling for this consumption-loan band |
These are amount-based limits for consumption loans, not one universal ceiling for every gold-backed facility. A business-purpose loan, another permitted category or a product governed by different provisions may have a different limit. Your lender’s policy and contract identify the applicable category.
The directions state that the prescribed LTV ratio must be maintained on an ongoing basis throughout the tenor of the loan. A fall in accepted collateral value can therefore matter even if the loan was within the limit on the sanction date. The current copy of the directions used here is marked updated through September 29, 2025; confirm the version and your lender’s implementation when making a decision.

There is no single RBI-mandated automatic cash margin call or universal cure for every price decline. The 2025 directions require each lender’s credit policy to state its maximum LTV, valuation norms and actions in case of a breach. The actual process can depend on the loan category, agreement, notice and the time allowed to respond.

Check these documents in order
- Your loan agreement: Look for clauses headed LTV, margin, collateral shortfall, default, recall, auction or sale.
- The latest statement: Confirm the balance, interest posting date and any amount treated as repayable.
- The sanction or assay certificate: Verify purity, gross weight, net gold weight, deductions, condition and the value recorded at sanction.
- The lender’s valuation disclosure: The directions require lenders to disclose their valuation methodology on their websites. Compare that method with the figure in your notice.
- Written communications: If the lender sends a shortfall or breach notice, record the date, stated LTV, calculation, remedy and deadline.
Possible actions may include a part repayment, another agreed remedy or enforcement under the contract, but the documents for your loan control. Do not add gold, transfer money or agree to an auction-related step solely because a market quote moved; first obtain the lender’s written calculation and instructions.
How to verify the lender’s calculation
Reconcile the numerator
Ask the lender to identify the exact balance used, the date it was measured and whether interest accrued after the last payment is included. For a bullet loan, request the maturity amount used in the ratio rather than relying on the original disbursement figure.
Reconcile the denominator
Request the valuation date, the reference-price source, the 30-day averaging window if used, the preceding-day price, the purity applied and every deduction. Check that the net gold weight in the assay certificate matches the pledged items and that stones or other materials have not been counted as gold.

Recalculate without rounding early
Use the lender’s unrounded inputs where available. For example, if the accepted value is ₹79,950 rather than a rounded ₹80,000, calculating with ₹80,000 can slightly understate LTV. Apply rounding only to the displayed result, using the lender’s stated convention.

If your figures differ, send the statement number, valuation date and your arithmetic to the lender’s official service channel. Keep the response and any revised statement. A verbal estimate from a branch or call centre may not be the formal calculation used for a notice.

Central Bank of India’s public gold-loan information describes a lender-specific approach that can use the lower of a preceding-30-day average calculation after an applicable margin or an applicable percentage of current market price, depending on loan tenure. It also describes purity testing and deductions for stones, fastenings and other non-gold weight. The page was accessed October 13, 2026, and its rates and terms can change. Treat this only as an example of why two lenders’ accepted values may differ; do not apply its method to another lender without checking that lender’s documents.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using jewellery resale or insurance value: Replace it with the lender’s eligible intrinsic metal value.
- Using gross weight: Check net gold weight after stones, fastenings and other deductions.
- Using a 24-carat quote for lower-purity jewellery: Apply the lender’s documented purity adjustment.
- Using the original principal: Use the current relevant balance, or the maturity amount when the bullet-loan rule applies.
- Comparing dates that do not match: Align the balance date and valuation date required by the lender.
- Assuming every gold loan has a 75% ceiling: The 2025 consumption-loan bands are 85%, 80% and 75%; purpose and amount matter.
- Assuming a price fall automatically means an immediate margin call: Read the specific policy, agreement and notice because no universal cure is established.
- Relying on a home scale or testing kit: Such tools cannot establish the lender’s accepted purity, net eligible gold, reference price or debt balance.
If you are comparing a replacement or future gold loan
Do not compare headline LTV alone. Ask each lender for the assumptions that determine how quickly the ratio can change and what a breach means.
| Comparison point | Question to ask | Why it matters after prices fall |
|---|---|---|
| Valuation reference | Which price source and date are used, and is the lower-of-two method applied? | Different references can produce different accepted values. |
| Purity and deductions | How are purity, net gold weight, stones and fastenings recorded? | The denominator is based on eligible metal, not gross jewellery weight. |
| Maximum LTV | What limit applies to this purpose and amount? | A limit for one consumption-loan band may not apply to another product. |
| Revaluation frequency | When and how often is collateral value updated? | More frequent updates can identify a decline sooner. |
| Breach notices | What notice, deadline and remedy does the agreement specify? | The contract determines the response process; there is no universal remedy. |
| Repayment structure | Is the facility instalment-based or bullet repayment, and what amount is used for LTV? | A bullet calculation may include the total maturity amount. |
| Release and auction terms | When is collateral released, and what procedure applies after default? | These terms affect the consequences of an unresolved shortfall. |
Historical 75% references
Older articles often state that gold loans have a 75% LTV ceiling because earlier RBI bank guidance described a 75% ceiling and a preceding-30-day average valuation for certain bank gold-jewellery loans. That historical material explains the older figure but should not replace the 2025 directions. It should not be generalized across loan purposes, lender categories or current agreements.
Action checklist before you decide what to do
- Save the latest statement and loan agreement.
- Write down the relevant outstanding amount and, for a bullet loan, the maturity amount used for LTV.
- Obtain the assay certificate and check purity, gross weight, net gold weight and deductions.
- Ask for the current valuation date, reference prices and purity calculation.
- Compute the ratio using the lender-accepted figures.
- Identify the applicable LTV band and whether it must be maintained throughout the tenor.
- Read the written breach process, notice and deadline before making a payment or other change.
- Keep copies of all calculations and lender responses.
Gold-price movement alone cannot tell you whether your account is in breach. The answer depends on the relevant debt figure, the lender’s accepted value on its valuation date, the loan purpose and amount, and the process in your contract.
