How to Calculate Whether Credit Card Rewards Are Worth the Interest Rate

Credit card rewards are worth the interest rate only when the rewards you can realistically redeem exceed the interest and fees caused by the spending. Use this estimate: net reward value = usable rewards − interest attributable to that spending − applicable fees. If you qualify for a purchase grace period and pay the balance in full by the due date, purchase interest may be zero. If you revolve a balance, calculate interest for the days the balance remains unpaid rather than comparing rewards with the card’s APR alone.

What “worth it” means

A rewards card does not provide a guaranteed return. Its value depends on three separate questions: how much you spend in eligible categories, what the rewards are actually worth when redeemed, and what the account costs while that spending remains unpaid. A card advertising 2% rewards can still produce a negative result if interest on the associated balance is greater than the rewards, or if an annual fee consumes the difference.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The relevant comparison is therefore a transaction-level or annual net value, not the earn rate in isolation:

“Usable” matters. Points that you will not redeem, rewards subject to restrictions, or a promotional value that can later change should not be counted at their headline value. The calculation is an estimate unless it uses the issuer’s actual daily balances, payment dates, agreement terms, and reward ledger.

Numbers you need before calculating

Collect the following information for the purchase or spending pattern you are evaluating:

  • Eligible purchase amount: the portion of spending that earns rewards under the current program terms.
  • Earn rate: the cash percentage or points earned per dollar for those purchases.
  • Realistic redemption value: the amount you expect to receive when you redeem, after considering the redemption option you will actually use.
  • Purchase APR: use the APR that applies to purchases, not a balance-transfer, cash-advance, or penalty APR unless that is the balance category being measured.
  • Average balance and days carried: estimate how much of the spending remains unpaid and for how many days. Include the payment schedule rather than assuming the balance stays constant.
  • Grace-period status: determine whether the account is eligible for a purchase grace period and whether you will pay the required statement balance by the due date.
  • Annual and transaction fees: include an annual fee when it is incurred for keeping the card, and include a balance-transfer, cash-advance, foreign-transaction, or other fee only when it is part of the strategy you are analyzing.
  • Reward limits: check caps, exclusions, expiration provisions, minimum redemption amounts, and conditions that can prevent or reduce redemption.

The card agreement and current reward terms control. Advertised reward values are not permanent guarantees, and an issuer can impose restrictions or change a program subject to its terms.

Step-by-step calculation

1. Isolate the spending that generated the rewards

Start with the purchases you are testing, such as $1,500 of ordinary spending during one billing cycle. Separate purchases that earn different rates. A bonus category, an excluded merchant type, and a purchase above a stated cap should not be blended into one percentage.

Attribution is especially important when you already owe money. Interest on a pre-existing balance, a balance transfer, or a cash advance should not be credited to the new purchase’s rewards. If exact attribution is impossible, label the result as a range and explain which balances are included.

2. Convert rewards into a realistic dollar value

Use:

Usable rewards value = eligible purchase amount × earn rate × redemption value

For a cash-reward rate, the redemption value is usually represented by the rate itself. For points or miles, use the value of the redemption you would actually choose, not a theoretical maximum. If $2,000 of eligible spending earns the equivalent of 2%, the gross reward value is $40 before interest and fees. If the same points are worth only 0.8 cents each in the redemption you use, calculate with that lower value.

Do not count rewards you would not redeem. A reward balance that expires, requires a redemption minimum you will not reach, or is unavailable for the purchase you want has no practical value to you.

3. Estimate interest for a roughly stable balance

For a quick estimate when the balance is approximately stable, use:

Estimated interest = APR × average balance × days carried ÷ 365

Use the APR as a decimal: 24% becomes 0.24. For example, a $2,400 average balance carried for 45 days at 24% APR produces approximately $71.01 in interest: 0.24 × $2,400 × 45 ÷ 365. If the spending earned $48 in rewards, the spending is approximately $23.01 negative before any fee.

This is a shortcut, not a statement calculation. Many credit card companies calculate interest daily using an average daily balance. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says, “Many credit card companies calculate the interest you owe daily, based on your average daily account balance.” The issuer may use a daily periodic rate, include different transaction categories, compound interest, and apply payments according to the agreement.

4. Add fees caused by the strategy

Subtract fees that are genuinely attributable to the rewards decision. An annual fee belongs in an annual comparison. A one-time transaction fee belongs in the period in which it is charged. Do not pretend a fee is paid monthly unless you are deliberately allocating it for a budgeting model; the issuer charges it according to the account terms.

For an annual comparison, calculate:

Annual net value = annual usable rewards − annual interest − annual fee − other applicable fees

If you would keep the card regardless of the rewards, the fee may not be incremental to a particular purchase. If the rewards are the reason you keep the account, include the fee when deciding whether the card earns its place in your wallet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Compare the result with your alternative

A positive result means the modeled rewards exceed the modeled financing and fee costs. It does not prove that the card is the best option. Compare it with paying in full, using a lower-rate card, or using a card with no annual fee. A card that earns fewer rewards but avoids months of interest can produce a better outcome.

You can calculate a rough break-even APR when there is no fee:

Break-even APR = usable rewards value × 365 ÷ (average balance × days carried)

With $48 of rewards on a $2,400 average balance carried for 45 days, the break-even APR is about 16.22%. At a higher APR, the interest estimate exceeds the rewards. If a $95 annual fee is part of the comparison, subtract it from the reward value before calculating the break-even rate, or calculate the fee separately over the full year.

Use the issuer’s method for a precise estimate

The shortcut can mislead when balances change during the cycle. For a more accurate model, obtain the statement’s daily balances or reconstruct them from transaction and payment dates. Apply the card agreement’s daily periodic rate to each day’s balance, then account for compounding and payment allocation.

  1. Record each purchase date, amount, and balance category.
  2. Record each payment date and amount.
  3. Identify the daily periodic rate or other interest method in the agreement.
  4. Determine whether a grace period applies to purchases and whether losing it affects new transactions.
  5. Calculate the balance for each day or use the issuer’s stated average-daily-balance procedure.
  6. Separate purchase interest from interest on transfers, cash advances, fees, and prior balances.
  7. Match the reward ledger to eligible transactions and the redemption value you actually receive.

Payments and new charges can make the average balance much lower than the original purchase amount. Conversely, a delayed payment can leave a balance outstanding for more days than a monthly estimate assumes. When exact terms are unclear, use a conservative range rather than presenting a single precise-looking result.

Worked examples

Example: paying in full under a grace period

Suppose you make $1,200 of eligible purchases at a 3% reward value and pay the statement balance in full by the due date. The gross rewards are $36. If the account qualifies for a purchase grace period and the agreement’s conditions are met, the purchase-interest cost can be zero. The net value for that cycle is therefore approximately $36, before any annual fee or other charge.

A grace period is not required by law, although most cards provide one for purchases. Check the card agreement and statement. Paying in full does not automatically eliminate interest on every balance category: cash advances, some transfers, and promotional balances can have different rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: carrying a balance for 45 days

Assume $2,400 of eligible spending earns 2%, for $48 of rewards. If the average balance attributable to those purchases is $2,400 for 45 days and the purchase APR is 24%, estimated interest is $71.01. The estimated net value is $48 − $71.01 = −$23.01 before fees. Paying down the balance earlier lowers the average balance and the interest cost, even though the reward amount does not change.

Example: an annual fee changes the answer

At a 2% reward value, a $95 annual fee requires $4,750 of eligible spending merely to offset the fee when there is no interest: $95 ÷ 0.02. If the account also produces interest, the required spending is higher. This is why annual rewards should be compared with the annual fee, and why the value of rewards you expect to receive and use matters more than the advertised earn rate.

CFPB illustration of rate differences

A Consumer Financial Protection Bureau handout gives a scenario in which a $3,000 balance paid at $100 per month produces an estimated $1,015 in interest over 41 months at 18% APR, compared with $783 over 38 months at 15% APR. The higher-rate example costs $232 more. These are scenario-specific estimates, not a forecast for every $3,000 balance, because payment timing, compounding, and the issuer’s calculation method affect the result.

Scenario in the CFPB illustration Estimated interest Estimated payoff time
$3,000 balance, 18% APR, $100 monthly payment $1,015 41 months
$3,000 balance, 15% APR, $100 monthly payment $783 38 months

The $232 difference is a reminder that a three-percentage-point APR change can be worth more than many years of modest rewards when a balance revolves.

Grace periods, lost grace periods, and payment timing

If you pay the required statement balance by the due date and the account qualifies, a grace period can make purchase interest zero. Verify the exact requirement: some agreements require paying the full balance for consecutive cycles to regain a grace period after carrying a balance.

When you carry a balance month to month, new purchases on most cards can accrue interest from the transaction date. A payment that arrives after the due date can also trigger interest, fees, or loss of a grace period under the agreement. The purchase date, posting date, payment date, and statement closing date can all matter.

Do not assume a 0% balance-transfer promotion protects new purchases. The CFPB specifically warns that a 0% balance transfer does not necessarily prevent interest on purchases. Keep the transferred balance and new spending separate in your model, and read the promotional terms before charging new purchases.

Reward rules can reduce the value you calculated

Inspect the current program terms for:

  • Spending categories that earn a different rate or no rewards.
  • Annual, quarterly, or promotional caps.
  • Excluded transaction types, such as fees, transfers, cash advances, or returned purchases.
  • Expiration dates, forfeiture provisions, and account-closure consequences.
  • Minimum redemption amounts and available redemption methods.
  • Conditions that permit devaluation or deny a reward.

The CFPB has reported consumer concerns about devaluation, vague conditions, restrictions, and rewards being denied. Its 2024 circular discusses redemption failures and the risk of treating an advertised point value as permanent. Use the current terms and the redemption you can document, not a promotional valuation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deferred-interest promotions need a separate calculation

“No interest if paid in full” deferred-interest promotions are not the same as an ordinary 0% APR offer. The CFPB explains that interest may be charged retroactively if the promotional balance is not paid by the deadline.

Calculate the payment needed to clear the purchase before the deadline:

Required periodic payment = promotional balance ÷ number of payments before the deadline

Then add a margin for timing, unexpected charges, and the possibility that payments are applied to other balances first. If you cannot meet the required schedule, treat the potential retroactive interest as a real cost rather than assigning the promotion a zero-interest value.

How to compare a rewards card with a lower-rate card

The CFPB advises consumers who expect to carry a balance to consider lower-rate cards. These cards often provide fewer rewards and may have no annual fee, but avoiding interest can outweigh a higher earn rate.

Comparison factor What to measure Why it changes the result
Purchase APR The APR applied to the balance you expect to revolve Interest grows with the rate, balance, and time carried.
Payment behavior Full payment by the due date versus partial payments Full payment may preserve a grace period; partial payment usually creates financing cost.
Reward value Eligible spending multiplied by a realistic redemption value The earn rate is not useful if the reward cannot be redeemed at its advertised value.
Annual fee The fee charged for keeping the account Rewards must exceed the fee before interest is considered.
Transaction fees Fees for transfers, cash advances, foreign transactions, or other planned actions A one-time fee can erase the value of a small reward balance.
Program restrictions C caps, exclusions, expiration, minimums, and redemption conditions Restrictions reduce the amount you can earn or use.

For each card, calculate the same spending and payment pattern. A fair comparison might show that the rewards card wins when you pay in full, while the lower-rate card wins when you carry a balance for several months. The correct card can change with your expected payment behavior.

A worksheet you can complete from a statement

  1. Write down the eligible purchase total for the period.
  2. Enter the reward rate for each category and convert points into the value of your intended redemption.
  3. List the purchase APR and any daily-rate language from the agreement.
  4. Estimate the balance after each planned payment and the number of days each amount remains unpaid.
  5. Calculate interest with the quick formula, then replace it with the issuer’s daily method if the result is close to break-even.
  6. Add the annual fee and transaction fees that belong to the decision.
  7. Subtract costs from rewards and compare the result with a lower-rate or no-fee alternative.
  8. Recalculate using a less favorable redemption value or a slower payment schedule to test whether the conclusion is robust.

Keep the reward calculation and the debt-payoff calculation separate. Paying down a high-rate balance usually creates a more certain saving than earning additional rewards on new spending.

Common calculation mistakes

Comparing rewards with APR alone

APR is an annual comparison measure, while your interest cost depends on the balance and the number of days it remains unpaid. A 20% APR on a small balance for a few days can cost less than a 15% APR on a large balance carried for months.

Using the original purchase instead of the average balance

If you make a large payment halfway through the cycle, interest is not generally calculated as though the original amount remained outstanding for every day. Use daily balances or a defensible average.

Assuming every dollar earns the headline rate

Bonus categories, caps, exclusions, returned purchases, and transaction types can change the eligible amount. Reconcile the reward ledger with the terms.

Counting theoretical redemption value

Use the redemption you would actually make. A value that requires travel, a minimum balance, or a redemption channel you will not use should not be treated as cash.

Ignoring the annual fee

Annual rewards can look positive until the fee is deducted. Calculate the spending required to cover the fee and then subtract interest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting that rewards can change

Consumer complaints cited by the CFPB include devaluation and redemption failures. Recheck current terms instead of assuming last year’s value will continue.

Mixing balance categories

Purchase, transfer, cash-advance, deferred-interest, and penalty balances can have different rates and payment rules. Attribute each cost to the correct category.

What the CFPB market figures do—and do not—tell you

Rewards cards are widespread, but popularity does not prove that a particular card is profitable for a revolver. CFPB materials report that more than 90% of general-purpose credit-card spending occurred on rewards cards in 2019, and that 75% of general-purpose credit cards were rewards cards by the end of 2022. The same 2024 circular reports more than $40 billion in rewards earned from major general-purpose cards in 2022, with consumer rewards balances exceeding $33 billion at the end of 2022—40% higher than in the fourth quarter of 2019.

The circular also reports a study in which rewards appeared on the front page of 94% of sampled card offers, compared with annual fees on 78%, APRs on 28%, and late fees on 6%. Those figures describe the cited sample and period; they are not a current estimate of every card offer or a guarantee about how prominently an issuer will display costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These statistics explain why a rewards headline can dominate marketing while the financing cost receives less attention. Your decision still depends on your balance, payment schedule, fee exposure, and redemption behavior.

Decision framework

  • You pay every purchase in full: compare usable annual rewards with annual and transaction fees, then verify that the grace-period conditions apply.
  • You occasionally revolve a small balance: calculate interest for the exact days carried and test a lower redemption value. A modest reward may survive a short carry, but do not assume it will.
  • You regularly carry a balance: prioritize a lower purchase APR and a payoff plan. Compare the interest saved with the rewards you would forgo.
  • You are using a transfer or deferred-interest promotion: model each balance category separately and calculate the payment required before the promotional deadline.
  • Your result is close to zero: use the issuer’s daily method, include every fee, and stress-test a slower payment or less valuable redemption. A fragile positive result is not a reliable benefit.

As the CFPB puts it, “Always compare the value of rewards you expect to receive (and use) each year with the annual fee you might pay.” For someone who expects to carry a balance, add the interest calculation before deciding that the rewards compensate for the card’s cost.
