Yes, a warehouse-club membership can pay for itself in fuel savings—but only if your annual gallons and local price difference are large enough. Calculate the gallons you would buy in a year, multiply by the club’s price advantage over the station you would otherwise use, and subtract the membership fee. A positive result means gas savings alone exceed the fee before detours, waiting time, card rewards, or other membership benefits.
There is no dependable national “typical savings” figure. Pump prices vary by club and by day, and access differs by location. Use same-day prices for the same fuel grade at a nearby club and a realistic alternative station on your normal route.

Where:
- Annual gallons = annual miles driven ÷ your vehicle’s observed miles per gallon.
- Price difference = realistic alternative-station price per gallon − club price per gallon, for the same grade and a similar time.
- Annual membership fee = the fee you will actually pay, not an expired or conditional promotion.
If the result is positive, fuel savings are estimated to cover the membership. If it is negative, gas alone does not cover the fee under your assumptions.
What you need before doing the math
1. Your annual miles
Use a recent odometer history, maintenance records, or a mileage log rather than a rough national average. If your driving changes seasonally, total the miles for a full year. Include commuting, errands, trips, and any miles that would realistically take you past the club station.
2. Your observed fuel economy
Use your vehicle’s actual miles per gallon from several fill-ups. Dashboard estimates can be useful, but a tank-to-tank calculation is better: divide miles driven since the prior fill by gallons added. If you drive more than one vehicle, calculate each vehicle separately and add the gallons that would actually be bought at the club.
3. Two current prices
Record the club price and the price at the station you would otherwise use on the same day. Match regular with regular, premium with premium, and diesel with diesel. A price from a station you would never visit is not a meaningful alternative.
Sam’s Club says, “Fuel pricing at Sam’s Club varies by location, as each club sets prices based on the local area.” Costco says its app can show Costco Gas Station prices. Check the specific location rather than assuming a chain-wide spread.
4. The fee you will actually pay
As displayed on Sam’s Club’s membership page observed October 13, 2026, Club membership was $60 per year and Plus membership was $120 per year. Costco’s membership page listed a $120 annual Executive membership. Those are observed prices, not a promise that fees will remain unchanged; verify the checkout price and renewal terms when you join.
Sam’s Club’s page displayed a new-member promotion running July 6 through September 30, 2026. That period had ended by October 18, 2026, so do not treat it as a current offer. A promotion should enter your calculation only if it is available to you and its conditions are clear.

Step-by-step method
- Estimate annual gallons. Divide annual miles by observed miles per gallon. For example, 12,000 miles ÷ 25 mpg = 480 gallons.
- Measure the local spread. Subtract the club price from the alternative price. If the alternative is $3.49 and the club is $3.34, the difference is $0.15 per gallon.
- Multiply gallons by the spread. In the example, 480 × $0.15 = $72 in gross annual fuel savings.
- Subtract the fee. With a $60 membership, $72 − $60 = $12 in estimated net gas savings. With a $120 membership, the result is negative $48.
- Account for access. If reaching the club requires a detour, subtract the added fuel cost and consider the value of your time. The simple formula assumes you can buy the club fuel without meaningful extra travel.
- Run a conservative case. Recalculate with a smaller price difference, fewer gallons, or both. Pump prices and driving patterns change; a membership that works only under the most favorable assumptions is fragile.
Break-even gallons and miles
Break-even gallons show how much fuel you must buy at the club before the price advantage equals the membership fee:
Break-even gallons = membership fee ÷ price difference per gallon
Then convert gallons to miles:
Break-even annual miles = break-even gallons × observed mpg
The following examples use 25 mpg only to illustrate the arithmetic. Your vehicle’s observed mpg determines your result.

| $60 | $0.10 per gallon | 600 | 15,000 |

| $120 | $0.20 per gallon | 600 | 15,000 |
For a driver covering 12,000 miles at 25 mpg, a $60 fee requires an average advantage of about $0.125 per gallon to break even on fuel alone. A $120 fee requires about $0.25 per gallon. Those are mathematical thresholds, not claims about what any particular club charges.
Worked scenarios
Scenario A: modest driving and a small spread
Assume 10,000 annual miles, 25 mpg, and a $0.08 club advantage. Annual fuel is 400 gallons, so gross savings are $32. A $60 membership produces negative $28 in gas-only savings. A $120 membership produces negative $88. The membership could still be worthwhile for other reasons, but the pump-price difference does not pay for it.
Scenario B: heavier driving and a larger spread
Assume 18,000 miles, 30 mpg, and a $0.18 advantage. Annual fuel is 600 gallons; gross savings are $108. Against a $60 fee, estimated net gas savings are $48. Against a $120 fee, gas savings fall short by $12.

Scenario C: the club is off your route
Assume the same 600 gallons and $0.18 spread, but each club visit adds a 12-mile round trip. At 25 mpg, that detour consumes 0.48 gallon. If fuel is $3.50, the added fuel costs about $1.68 per visit. Forty visits would cost about $67.20 in extra fuel, reducing the $108 gross advantage to roughly $40.80 before valuing time. Under those assumptions, even a $60 fee is not covered. This is an illustration; replace every assumption with your own route, vehicle, fuel price, and visit frequency.

How Costco and Sam’s Club details affect the estimate
Costco
Costco’s membership page lists a $120 annual Executive membership and describes “member-exclusive prices on gasoline that meets TOP TIER™ performance standards.” The statement establishes member pricing and a fuel-quality standard, not a universal dollar-per-gallon saving. The price comparison must still use your nearby Costco station and your realistic alternative.
Sam’s Club
Sam’s Club lists Club membership at $60 per year and Plus membership at $120 per year on the page observed October 13, 2026. Its membership materials list member-only fuel prices as a benefit. Sam’s Club also says most fuel stations are member-only.
At a small number of Sam’s Club stations that are open to the public, Sam’s Club’s Help Center describes a five-cent-per-gallon discount for members and Walmart+ users, with an exception for New Jersey where membership fuel discounting is not allowed. That is a location-specific policy statement, not a universal member-versus-nonmember saving for every station or state. Do not use five cents as your assumed spread unless the station and local rules actually fit that description.
Comparing the memberships
| Option | Annual fee shown in the cited page | Fuel information established | What you still must measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sam’s Club Club | $60, observed October 13, 2026 | Member-only fuel prices are listed as a benefit | Your local price, gallons, access, and current terms |
| Sam’s Club Plus | $120, observed October 13, 2026 | Member-only fuel prices are listed as a benefit | Whether the higher fee is justified by fuel and any separate benefits |
| Costco Executive | $120, observed October 13, 2026 | Member-exclusive gasoline pricing is described | Your local price and the exact membership level you would buy |
| Costco base membership | Not stated in the cited page | Not stated as a separate fee in the supplied material | Current fee and eligibility at the time of joining |
Do not compare a $60 fee with a $120 fee without asking whether the higher tier provides a fuel advantage, a separate reward, or another benefit you would use. Keep non-fuel value outside the claim that gasoline paid for the membership.

Include detours, queues, and access
A club with the lowest posted price can cost more if you make special trips. Estimate:
- Extra miles per visit: round-trip distance from your normal route.
- Extra gallons: extra miles ÷ vehicle mpg.
- Extra fuel cost: extra gallons × your applicable fuel price.
- Visit frequency: how many times per year you would actually refuel there.
- Time cost: additional driving and likely queue time, using a value you consider reasonable.
Also check whether the station is open when you travel, whether your membership is accepted at that pump, and whether traffic patterns make the stop practical. If you already shop at the club, the marginal detour may be near zero. If you would drive there solely for fuel, include the entire trip.

Handle card rewards separately
Costco and Sam’s Club promote fuel rewards on their respective cards. Rewards can reduce your effective cost, but they are not part of the basic membership-versus-pump-price calculation. Add them only after checking current eligibility, annual caps, qualifying purchase categories, redemption rules, and whether the reward applies at the specific station.
Use a separate line in your worksheet:
Adjusted net savings = net gas savings + usable annual fuel rewards − reward-related costs
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not assume a card is required to receive the member fuel price. The membership calculation should stand on its own, and a reward should not be counted if you would not otherwise use the card or cannot reach its redemption conditions.
Fuel quality is a different question
Costco’s statement that its gasoline meets TOP TIER performance standards addresses a fuel-performance specification. It does not prove better fuel economy, lower maintenance costs, or a lower total cost for your household. Keep quality claims, price savings, and vehicle requirements as separate decision factors.
A practical comparison worksheet
Fill in one row for each membership and alternative station:
| Input | Your value | How to obtain it |
|---|---|---|
| Annual miles | _____ | Odometer or mileage log |
| Observed mpg | _____ | Several tank-to-tank fill-ups |
| Annual gallons | _____ | Annual miles ÷ mpg |
| Alternative price per gallon | $_____ | Same grade, same day |
| Club price per gallon | $_____ | Specific nearby station |
| Price difference | $_____ | Alternative price − club price |
| Gross annual fuel savings | $_____ | Gallons × difference |
| Membership fee | $_____ | Current checkout or renewal price |
| Detour fuel and time | $_____ | Extra miles, visits, and time |
| Net gas savings | $_____ | Gross savings − fee − detour cost |
Repeat the price check on several ordinary weeks if possible. One unusually wide or narrow spread can distort a full-year decision. A range of outcomes—low, expected, and high price differences—shows whether the membership is robust.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a national average
National fuel averages cannot tell you what your club and nearby alternatives charge. Use local, same-day observations.

Comparing different fuel grades
Comparing regular at one station with premium at another exaggerates or hides the spread. Match grades and, where relevant, diesel formulations.
Counting all household fuel when only some is bought at the club
If one vehicle uses the club and another does not, calculate the club-eligible gallons only. The formula should represent purchases you would actually move to the club.
Applying a limited discount everywhere
The five-cent Sam’s Club public-station discount applies only to the limited stations and circumstances described by Sam’s Club, and New Jersey has a stated exception. It is not a universal savings estimate.
Using an expired promotion
Promotional membership pricing may be limited to new members, a date range, or a particular channel. Confirm that the offer is live and that you qualify before lowering the fee in your model.
Ignoring a negative price difference
If the club is more expensive than your realistic alternative on the days you buy fuel, the price difference is negative and the membership increases fuel cost under that observation. Recheck at another time, but do not force the result to be positive.
Double-counting rewards
A card reward and a member-only pump price are separate benefits. Apply each once, under its current terms, and do not count rewards that exceed an annual cap or cannot be redeemed.
Making the decision
Choose the membership for fuel alone only when your conservative estimate remains positive after the fee and realistic detour costs. If the result is close to zero, treat it as uncertain because prices, mileage, and station access can change. If fuel savings are negative, decide based on other benefits—such as bulk purchases or services—without claiming that gasoline paid for the membership.
Recheck the calculation before renewal. Membership fees, pump prices, station access, local laws, promotions, and card terms can all change. The defensible answer is the one produced by your own gallons, your own route, and current prices at the stations you would actually use.
Bottom line
A warehouse-club membership saves money on gas only when annual gallons × your local per-gallon advantage exceeds the fee and the cost of getting to the pump. Measure those inputs, test a conservative range, and keep rewards and non-fuel benefits separate from the gas-only result.
