A rewards card is worth keeping only when the value you can realistically get from its rewards and benefits exceeds its annual fee, other incremental costs, and any interest it causes or fails to offset. The right test is not whether the card earns points; it is whether it beats a realistic lower-cost alternative using your actual spending and redemption habits.
Use recent statements, current earning terms, and the redemptions you would genuinely make. Keep one-time welcome bonuses separate from recurring value, and never count a benefit that requires buying something you would not otherwise purchase. If you carry a balance, include interest: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says consumers with revolving balances often pay far more in interest and fees than they receive in rewards.

The break-even question to answer
Evaluate a rewards card as a small annual investment. Its recurring net value is:
Net annual value = rewards at realistic redemption value + usable benefits − annual fee − incremental costs.

“Usable” means a benefit replaces spending you already planned to make and is practical to claim. “Incremental costs” can include higher interest, transaction fees, required paid memberships, or a redemption price premium. For a keep-or-switch decision, calculate the same number for a realistic alternative, such as a no-annual-fee cash-back card, then compare the two. The relevant figure is the card’s incremental value over that alternative, not the fact that it generates rewards at all.
This framework follows the spending, redemption, fee and alternative-card considerations described in Chase guidance, while incorporating the CFPB’s warning that interest and program complexity can overwhelm advertised rewards.
Gather the inputs before doing any math
Use a normal spending period
Collect six to twelve months of statements, with twelve months preferred when your spending is seasonal. Exclude purchases you made only to trigger a bonus, expenses another person reimbursed, and spending you would not repeat after changing cards. Annualize a shorter period only if it reflects your normal routine.
Group purchases by the card’s actual categories
Make a worksheet with one row per earning category shown in the current terms. Typical rows might be groceries, travel, dining, streaming, drugstores and “all other purchases,” but do not assume a merchant will code as advertised. Record the amount actually charged in each category and note caps, rotating categories, activation requirements, purchase exclusions and eligible payment methods.
Record current terms, not an old advertisement
Write down the annual fee, purchase APR, balance-transfer or foreign-transaction fees, earning rates, redemption rules, benefit conditions, expiration or forfeiture rules, and any category limits. Card fees, APRs, bonuses, benefit terms and program rules can change, so check the current card agreement and rewards terms on the date you calculate.
List a genuine alternative
Choose the card you would actually use if you cancelled this one. A no-fee card with a flat cash-back rate is often the cleanest benchmark, but a different category card can be appropriate if it matches your spending. Use identical spending and balance assumptions for both cards.
Calculate recurring rewards from your spending
Step 1: Apply the earn rate to every category
For each row, multiply eligible annual spending by the base earning rate. Keep the units visible:

| Category | Annual spend | Earn rate | Rewards earned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Groceries | $6,000 | 3 points per dollar | 18,000 points |
| Travel | $3,000 | 3 points per dollar | 9,000 points |
| Other purchases | $9,000 | 1 point per dollar | 9,000 points |
| Total | $18,000 | — | 36,000 points |
The table is an illustration, not a universal spending threshold. If a category has a quarterly or annual cap, split the calculation at the cap and apply the lower rate to the excess. If a purchase is excluded, remove it rather than awarding points based on the merchant’s marketing description.
Step 2: Separate recurring earnings from promotions
Calculate ordinary rewards first. Then create a separate line for a welcome bonus, referral award or temporary multiplier. Include a bonus only when you can satisfy its terms through planned spending. Do not buy extra items, pay bills early, or shift purchases you cannot afford merely to qualify.
Show a first-year total and a recurring-year total. A large one-time bonus can make the first year attractive while the underlying card remains a poor long-term fit. If a bonus is not guaranteed, is prorated, or can be forfeited, label that uncertainty and omit it from a conservative recurring calculation.
Value points and miles based on an actual redemption
Use the redemption you would really choose
Cash rewards have a relatively clear dollar value when the terms state the cash-out rate. Points and miles do not have a universal value. To estimate yours, compare the cash price of a redemption you would otherwise buy with the number of points required:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Value per point = (cash price you would pay − unavoidable taxes and fees) ÷ points required.
For example, if a flight you would purchase costs $360 in cash, the award requires 30,000 points and you still pay $60 in taxes, the usable value is ($360 − $60) ÷ 30,000 = $0.01 per point, or 1 cent. If the award requires inconvenient dates, a higher fare class, a nonrefundable booking or a portal price above the cash market, use the value of the option you would actually take, not the most flattering theoretical redemption.
Check access and restrictions
Before assigning a value, verify whether you can find the redemption when you need it, whether blackout dates or capacity controls apply, and whether points can be transferred or used only through a portal. Include booking fees, carrier surcharges, cancellation penalties and taxes that are not covered by points. A redemption you would never make has no personal value, even if an issuer’s example implies a high rate.

Use a range when value varies
Calculate a conservative and an optimistic case when your likely redemptions differ. You might value a point at 0.8 cent for statement credit and 1.2 cents for a trip you regularly book. Present both results rather than claiming that one rate applies to everyone. The CFPB has noted that proprietary points values are set by issuers or partners and can fluctuate.
Add benefits only at their usable value
List each benefit separately and answer three questions:
- Would you pay for the underlying purchase without this card?
- Can you satisfy the activation, enrollment, timing and merchant requirements?
- Is the benefit’s value reduced by a portal price premium, effort, taxes, or an unwanted purchase?
Count the lower of the stated credit and the spending you would otherwise make. A $120 annual credit is worth $120 only if you would spend at least $120 on the eligible service under the same conditions. If you would spend $70, count $70. If claiming it requires a purchase you would skip, count zero. Recheck the current benefit terms because credits, eligible merchants and expiration dates can change.
Subtract fees, costs and interest
Annual and transaction fees
Subtract the annual fee every year, including years after the welcome bonus. Also subtract costs that are genuinely incremental to this card: foreign-transaction fees, paid authorized-user fees, redemption charges, or a required subscription you would not otherwise keep. Do not subtract a fee twice if it is already included in a stated benefit value.
Interest when you carry a balance
Rewards do not turn interest-bearing debt into a profitable strategy. Estimate the interest you would pay under the card’s purchase APR and balance pattern. A simple approximation is:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteEstimated annual interest ≈ average revolving balance × annual percentage rate.
Actual interest depends on daily balances, billing cycles, grace periods and payment timing, so use the issuer’s statements or calculator when available. If you pay in full every month, purchase interest is normally zero; do not invent an interest cost. If the rewards card has a higher APR than the alternative, include only the difference when comparing cards, while still showing the absolute cost in your personal budget.

The CFPB’s May 9, 2024 announcement states: “Consumers who carry revolving balances often pay far more in interest and fees than they get back on rewards.” Treat that as a warning to resolve the balance question before optimizing points.
Worked example: recurring value versus a no-fee alternative
Assume the illustrative card in the earlier table has a $95 annual fee, no incremental transaction fees, and points you can redeem for 1.2 cents each on trips you would otherwise purchase. You would use a $200 combination of credits and protections at their full practical value.

| Item | Rewards card | No-fee alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Annual spending | $18,000 | $18,000 |
| Recurring rewards | 36,000 points × $0.012 = $432 | 2% cash back = $360 |
| Usable benefits | $200 | $0 |
| Annual fee | −$95 | $0 |
| Incremental costs | $0 | $0 |
| Net annual value | $537 | $360 |
| Incremental advantage | $177 for the rewards card | |
If you carried an average balance that produced $720 of annual interest on the rewards card, its net would fall to negative $183 before considering any interest on the alternative. If both cards produced the same interest cost, that cost would cancel in the incremental comparison, but it would still show that neither card is a sound choice while you revolve debt.
Compare first-year and ongoing value separately
Build two columns for each card:
- First year: recurring rewards + usable benefits + attainable welcome bonus − annual fee − incremental costs and interest.
- Later years: recurring rewards + usable benefits − annual fee − incremental costs and interest.
Then compare the later-year column. If the card wins only because of a bonus, decide whether you are willing to apply for a different product later, close the account, or accept the lower recurring value. Never treat a bonus as recurring income.
Use a spreadsheet that exposes weak assumptions
A simple sheet can prevent optimistic estimates. Create columns for category, annual spend, eligible portion, earn rate, points or cash earned, redemption rate, and dollar value. Add separate rows for each benefit, fee, bonus and interest scenario. Use formulas rather than typing totals so you can test changes.
- Enter the last twelve months of category spending.
- Enter the current earn rate and any cap for each category.
- Calculate points or cash for each row.
- Enter a conservative redemption value, then a likely and optimistic value if appropriate.
- Add only benefits you would use, recording the condition that makes each one available.
- Subtract the annual fee and incremental costs.
- Add an interest scenario for a balance you might carry; keep a zero-interest scenario for full payers.
- Duplicate the sheet for the alternative card using the same spending and balance assumptions.
- Compare first-year, recurring-year and downside results.
If a single uncertain assumption changes the decision, label the card “borderline” and revisit that assumption instead of presenting a false precision.
Stress-test the result before cancelling or keeping the card
Lower redemption value
Recalculate points at a lower rate, such as statement credit rather than a high-value travel redemption. If the card stops winning, its value depends on behavior you may not sustain.

Lower category spend
Remove spending that is unusually high, reimbursed, or likely to move to another payment method. A card that requires concentrated spending to break even may not fit a changing budget.
Unused benefits
Set each doubtful credit to zero. Do not assign value to a lounge visit, insurance feature or subscription discount unless you would otherwise pay for it and can use it within the required period.
Program changes
Test what happens if a redemption rate falls, an earning category is capped, or a benefit disappears at renewal. The CFPB’s May 2024 rewards spotlight describes fluctuating proprietary values and more complex redemption channels. The FDIC’s March 2019 guidance also warns that terms can include expiration or forfeiture conditions, so check the current rules rather than relying on an old points balance calculation.

- Using advertised maximum earn rates: replace them with your category-level statement history and actual caps.
- Valuing every point at a fixed internet estimate: use a redemption you would make and subtract taxes and fees.
- Counting a credit at face value: count only spending you would otherwise make and can claim.
- Ignoring the annual fee after year one: calculate recurring value separately from the sign-up year.
- Leaving out interest: add the cost of revolving debt or compare a zero-interest payoff plan first.
- Comparing with an unrealistic alternative: use a card you qualify for and would actually carry, with the same spending assumptions.
- Assuming all points remain available: review expiration, forfeiture, transfer and account-closure rules.
- Trusting a portal price without checking cash prices: compare the same itinerary or product in cash and account for restrictions.
- Chasing a bonus by overspending: include a bonus only when planned spending meets the terms without carrying debt.
What to do when rewards are missing or devalued
Save statements, screenshots of the offer, and the rewards terms that applied when you made the purchase. Check whether the merchant category, posting date, annual cap, activation requirement or return changed eligibility. Contact the issuer through the channel listed in your card agreement and request a written explanation or correction.
The CFPB’s May 9, 2024 report announcement describes complaints involving hidden or vague conditions, devaluation, redemption problems and technical glitches. Its December 2024 Consumer Financial Protection Circular 2024-07 discusses examples in which devaluation, vague conditions or technical failures may raise legal concerns; it does not make every devaluation unlawful. If a material error is not resolved, keep your documentation and consider the complaint process available through the issuer and the CFPB.
A practical keep, switch or cancel decision
Keep the card when
- Recurring net value remains positive under conservative redemption and benefit assumptions.
- The card beats your realistic alternative by an amount that justifies the fee and effort.
- You can pay the balance in full or the interest cost is already accounted for and acceptable.
- You understand the current terms and can use the rewards without changing your spending.
Switch to a lower-cost card when
- The card’s recurring value is below the annual fee after realistic redemptions and usable benefits.
- It wins only because of a one-time bonus or optimistic travel valuation.
- You rarely use its categories or cannot meet benefit conditions.
- A no-fee alternative produces more value for the same spending and balance behavior.
Pause before closing
Check whether closing affects an outstanding balance, pending rewards, companion accounts, authorized users or a benefit you still need. Follow the issuer’s current redemption and account-closure rules, and move or redeem rewards only when the terms permit it. The calculation tells you whether the economics work; it does not replace a review of account-specific consequences.
Recheck the calculation at least annually
Repeat the worksheet when the annual fee posts, when your spending changes, when a benefit or earning category changes, or when you redeem points in a different way. Program access and value can change, and technical problems or vague conditions can disrupt expected rewards. A yearly review using current statements and terms keeps the decision tied to what you actually receive rather than what the card once promised.
The decision in one sentence
Keep a rewards card only when its conservative, recurring rewards and benefits exceed its fee, incremental costs and interest—and when the result is better than a realistic lower-fee alternative for the spending and redemptions you will genuinely use.
