How to Calculate the True Cost and Break-Even Point of a Leveraged Stock Trade

For a U.S. long stock position bought partly with a margin loan, calculate a simple break-even exit price as (shares × entry price + estimated margin interest + position-related costs) ÷ shares. The loan itself is not an extra loss at break-even: it financed part of the original purchase and is repaid from the sale proceeds. Interest and fees are the additions that make the required exit price higher than the entry price. Your broker’s agreement controls the actual rate, balance method, accrual timing, day-count convention and cash netting, so treat the formula as an estimate until you reconcile it to account records.

The core break-even calculation

Define the inputs before opening a calculator or spreadsheet:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • N = number of shares.
  • P = entry price per share.
  • L = margin-loan balance used for the position.
  • r = annual margin interest rate expressed as a decimal.
  • t = holding period as the year fraction used by the broker.
  • C = other costs attributable to the position and not already included in the execution price.

A simple-interest estimate is:

I = L × r × t

where I is estimated margin interest. The corresponding net break-even exit price is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Break-even exit price = (N × P + I + C) ÷ N

This sets sale proceeds equal to the original stock purchase value plus financing and other position costs. It assumes one long purchase, one eventual sale, no dividends, no taxes and no other cash flows.

Why the loan is not subtracted in the formula

Suppose the shares cost $10,000 and you borrow $6,000. Your initial cash contribution is $4,000, but the position still owns $10,000 of stock and owes $6,000. At sale, proceeds first repay the loan. To finish with the same $4,000 of cash you contributed, the sale must produce the original $10,000 purchase value plus interest and fees. That is why the principal term is N × P, not your cash contribution alone.

What the result means

The result is a price for the stock, not a guaranteed account outcome. A broker can raise the rate, change a house maintenance requirement or liquidate the position before the stock reaches this price. The calculation also does not predict taxes, dividends or an execution price that differs from the displayed quote.

Worked example: 100 shares financed with margin

Assume 100 shares are purchased at $100, creating a $10,000 position. The margin loan is $6,000, the quoted annual rate is 8%, the planned holding period is 90 days, and you identify $35 of commissions and other position charges. If you use a 360-day year solely for an illustration, the time fraction is 90 ÷ 360 = 0.25.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Estimate interest: $6,000 × 0.08 × 0.25 = $120.
  2. Add the purchase value and costs: $10,000 + $120 + $35 = $10,155.
  3. Divide by 100 shares: $101.55 per share.

A sale at $101.55 would therefore be the estimated net break-even price under those assumptions. It is not a 1.55% guaranteed hurdle: the percentage depends on the entry price, loan size, holding period, rate and fees, and the broker may use a different day-count or compounding method.

Find every cost that belongs in the calculation

Use the margin agreement, current fee schedule, trade confirmations and account statements rather than assuming that a commission-free order has no cost.

Margin interest

Ask the broker how the rate is set and whether it can change during the holding period. Confirm how often interest accrues, how the loan balance is measured, which day-count convention applies and whether eligible cash offsets the debit. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy specifically warns investors to ask these questions. A rate shown on an account page may be an annualized rate, not the amount that will actually post for your dates.

Trading and execution charges

Include commissions charged on the purchase or sale. Also check for markups or markdowns, regulatory or exchange pass-through charges, and any other amount shown on the confirmations. If a cost is already embedded in the execution price you use for P, do not add it a second time to C.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account-level charges

Maintenance, inactivity, transfer, wire and margin-related fees can matter when they are charged because of this position or during its holding period. Allocate only the portion that is reasonably attributable to the trade. If a fee applies to the entire account and cannot be assigned reliably, disclose the allocation assumption instead of presenting a false exact break-even price.

Cost or input Where to verify it How it enters the estimate
Loan balance Margin agreement and daily statement Use the balance on which interest is actually computed.
Annual rate and changes Current margin schedule and rate notices Use a period-specific rate; split the calculation when the rate changes.
Accrual and day count Agreement or posted interest detail Determines the year fraction and whether simple arithmetic is adequate.
Commissions and pass-through charges Purchase and sale confirmations Add to C unless already reflected in the prices used.
Markups or markdowns Confirmation and product disclosure Include the actual amount attributable to the trade.
Maintenance, inactivity, transfer or wire fees Fee schedule and statements Add only the applicable, position-related portion.
Cash interest or netting credit Agreement and statement Subtract an eligible credit from financing cost rather than ignoring it.

Calculate interest using the broker’s method

The product L × r × t is useful for planning, but it is not a universal billing rule. Follow this procedure when the broker supplies enough detail:

  1. Record each day’s debit balance. A loan can change after purchases, sales, deposits, withdrawals, dividends or interest postings.
  2. Divide the timeline whenever the rate changes. Apply each rate only to the days for which it was in force.
  3. Use the stated day count. A 360-day, 365-day or leap-year convention changes the result even when the quoted annual rate is identical.
  4. Check compounding or posting. If unpaid interest is added to principal, later interest can be charged on the larger balance.
  5. Apply cash netting exactly as described. Some arrangements offset eligible cash against the margin debit; others do not.
  6. Reconcile the estimate to the statement. Replace the estimate with posted interest once the period ends.

The SEC’s 2022 margin-interest bulletin gives a scale example, not a current rate quote: a $50,000 loan at 7% produces $3,500 of annual interest, or approximately $9.59 per day, in a no-netting illustration. With $500 of annual cash interest, the example’s net cost is $3,000 per year, approximately $8.22 per day. Your agreement may produce a different result.

Break-even price versus return on your own cash

Break-even price answers, “At what stock price do I recover the purchase value plus the financing and fees?” Return on cash answers a different question: “How much did I gain or lose compared with the money I supplied?”

For a simple long position, estimated profit after sale is:

Profit = N × (Q − P) − I − C

where Q is the sale price. If your initial cash contribution is E = N × P − L, the return on that cash is:

Return on cash = Profit ÷ E

Using the 100-share example, a sale at $105 produces $500 of price gain. Subtracting $120 interest and $35 of costs leaves $345. Against the $4,000 cash contribution, that is an estimated 8.625% return. The stock rose 5%, but leverage changed the return on the investor’s cash. At a lower sale price, the same leverage magnifies the percentage loss, and the $6,000 loan still has to be repaid.

Check margin-call risk separately

Break-even is not the same as the price at which the broker can demand more collateral. Account equity is generally the market value of the shares minus the loan balance and other debits. A maintenance requirement is a minimum equity percentage of market value.

For illustration, if the loan is fixed at L, there are N shares, and the maintenance percentage is m, a simplified trigger price is:

Trigger price ≈ L ÷ [N × (1 − m)]

This excludes interest changes, additional positions, fees, and broker-specific liquidation rules. With 100 shares, a $6,000 loan and a 30% maintenance requirement, the simplified trigger is $6,000 ÷ (100 × 0.70) = $85.71. That is far below the $101.55 break-even estimate, so a falling position could generate a call or forced sale while the investment is still below break-even.

Investor.gov describes 25% as the FINRA maintenance minimum and notes that many firms set house requirements of 30% to 40% or more, depending on the security. These are general U.S. figures, not a promise of your broker’s terms. Requirements can differ by security, concentration, volatility and account type, and a firm may liquidate without waiting for your approval.

  1. Enter shares in N, entry price in P, loan balance in L, annual rate in r, year fraction in t, and fees in C.
  2. Compute interest in a separate cell with =L*r*t for a simple estimate.
  3. Compute break-even with =(N*P+Interest+C)/N.
  4. Enter several possible sale prices and calculate =N*(SalePrice-P)-Interest-C for each.
  5. Calculate cash return with =Profit/(N*P-L), provided the denominator is positive.
  6. Enter the broker’s maintenance percentage and compare the resulting trigger estimate with your planned exit and stop levels.

Run sensitivity cases rather than relying on one decimal answer. For example, recalculate at a higher rate, a longer holding period and an additional fee. Interest grows with both the loan balance and time, so a trade that appears inexpensive for two weeks can have a materially different hurdle after several months.

How to compare two leveraged trades or accounts

Compare like with like: the same share quantity, entry value and assumed holding period. A lower advertised rate may not produce the lower total cost if it changes frequently, compounds differently or provides less cash netting.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Rate What is the current rate, what benchmark or schedule changes it, and how much notice is provided?
Accrual Is interest calculated daily, posted monthly, compounded, or based on another convention?
Cash treatment Are credit balances netted against the debit, and are there eligibility limits?
Trading costs Are commissions, markups, markdowns and regulatory charges shown on confirmations?
Account fees Could maintenance, inactivity, transfer or wire charges apply during the planned holding period?
House maintenance What requirement applies to this specific security, and can it change without a long notice period?
Liquidation policy Can the firm sell securities without contacting you first, and how are partial liquidations selected?

Cases that require a different cash-flow model

Dividends and other distributions

A dividend received and retained is a cash inflow that can lower the price needed to break even. In a simplified model with total net dividends D, the adjusted price is (N × P + I + C − D) ÷ N. Confirm whether a dividend is paid to you, used to reduce the debit, or offset by a substitute payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Taxes

Tax liability depends on jurisdiction, account type, holding period, income, deductions and the character of gains, losses and dividends. The simplified formula is pre-tax. Use applicable tax guidance or a qualified professional rather than inserting an assumed tax percentage into the margin-interest line.

Short sales

A short position has different cash flows, including borrow charges, dividend obligations and potentially changing collateral. Do not reuse the long-margin formula for it.

Multiple purchases, sales or withdrawals

When the balance changes during the holding period, calculate each debit segment separately or use the broker’s posted interest. Partial sales can repay part of the loan, while withdrawals can increase it; a single starting balance then becomes misleading.

Common mistakes and corrections

  • Using the loan rate as a permanent rate: split the period when the broker changes the rate.
  • Assuming 365 days: use the agreement’s day-count convention and include leap-day treatment where relevant.
  • Counting only commissions: review confirmations and the full fee schedule for markups, pass-through charges and account fees.
  • Double-counting execution costs: do not add a charge to C if it is already reflected in the entry or exit price you entered.
  • Calling a break-even price a safe price: calculate the maintenance trigger and leave room for adverse moves and rate changes.
  • Measuring profit against the stock value: divide by your actual initial cash contribution when evaluating return on cash.
  • Ignoring the debt after a loss: a sale below the loan balance and costs can leave money still owed.
  • Presenting an estimate as a statement total: replace projected interest with the broker’s posted amount when available.

Pre-trade checklist

  • Copy the exact share count, entry price and expected loan debit from the order plan.
  • Record the current rate, its change rules, accrual frequency, day-count basis and cash-netting treatment.
  • Estimate interest for the shortest, expected and longest holding periods.
  • List purchase, sale and account charges from current documents.
  • Calculate the break-even exit price and the return on your own cash at several sale prices.
  • Calculate the maintenance trigger using the security’s current house requirement.
  • Ask what happens if the stock gaps down, the rate rises or the broker changes the house requirement.
  • Reconcile the final result to confirmations and statements after the trade closes.

Margin makes a small stock-price move large relative to the cash you supplied, in both directions. A break-even calculation is therefore a planning tool: it exposes the financing and fee hurdle, while the agreement and current account records determine what you actually owe.
