Start with the destination country or customs territory. There is no universal import-tax rate or single landed-cost formula for gold, silver or platinum. Your final outlay depends on the product’s tariff classification, origin, customs value, delivery terms, currency conversion, and the destination’s duty and import-tax rules.
To estimate the amount you will actually pay, separate the seller’s metal price from customs value, duty, import VAT/GST, freight, insurance, clearance and payment charges. Check the destination’s official tariff and tax guidance for the shipment date, and confirm unusual or high-value consignments with customs or a qualified broker.

What “total cost” includes
The total cost is the buyer’s final, tax-inclusive outlay—not merely the quoted bullion price or the spot price of the metal. A practical calculation has these components:

- Any currency conversion needed for the customs declaration and your own payment.
- Customs-value additions or permitted deductions required by the destination.
- Import duty and any other applicable levy.
- Import VAT, GST or an equivalent tax, calculated on that jurisdiction’s prescribed base.
- Freight, transit insurance and delivery charges that you pay separately.
- Brokerage, customs clearance, storage, handling and carrier collection fees.
- Payment-processor, bank or foreign-exchange charges.
Add each charge once. A delivered quote may already include freight or insurance, and a tax base may already include some delivery costs. Do not add those amounts again.

Collect the transaction and product facts first
Before looking for a rate, write down the facts customs will use. A missing detail can change the tariff code, valuation or tax treatment.
Product form, metal and quantity
Record whether the item is a bullion bar, bullion coin, jewelry, medallion, industrial material or another form. Note the metal, weight, fineness or purity, number of pieces and any stones, design work or manufacturing that could affect classification. Gold, silver and platinum are not automatically treated alike, and a finished jewelry item may not be classified like a high-purity investment bar.
Price and currency
Keep the commercial invoice, seller’s price, discounts, commissions and the price timestamp. Record the invoice currency and the exchange rate or customs conversion method you intend to use. The rate used by a card issuer or bank can differ from the rate customs requires.
Origin and seller location
Country of origin is a customs concept, not simply the country from which a parcel is posted. Ask where the metal or finished product originates and retain any origin documentation. Origin can affect duty eligibility or preferential treatment.
Destination and route
Identify the importing country or customs territory, the final delivery address, the export country, transit countries and the point at which the goods enter the destination. Rules can differ between a country and a separate customs territory.
Delivery terms and insurance
Read the quotation or Incoterm-style delivery wording carefully. Determine who pays export transport, international freight, insurance, import clearance, duty and taxes. Note the insured value and the part of the journey covered. A “delivered” price does not by itself prove that import charges are paid.
Determine the destination’s customs value
Customs value is the base used to assess duty in many systems. The destination decides which transaction-price adjustments and delivery costs must be included, and which separately documented charges may be excluded or apportioned.

Transaction value as the starting point
European Union guidance identifies transaction value—the price paid or payable—as the main valuation method, subject to specified additions and deductions. Additions can include costs that belong to the goods but are not shown in the invoice price; eligible deductions generally require that amounts be separately identified and supported. Other jurisdictions use their own hierarchy and documentation rules.
Freight, insurance and delivery adjustments
For a UK import, HMRC explains that valuation for import VAT starts with the customs value used for duty even when no duty is payable. Its guidance addresses incidental expenses such as commission, packing, transport, insurance, customs clearance, handling, loading and storage, with conditions tied to destination and timing. HMRC’s delivery-cost guidance says relevant costs to the place of introduction can include export-country inland transport, associated costs and specified transport surcharges. Certain UK post-border freight amounts may be deducted when they are separately distinguished and meet the stated conditions. Transit-insurance treatment depends on the insured journey and any defensible apportionment. The guidance was updated 26 September 2025, so check the current version for your shipment.
Document every adjustment
Keep invoices for freight and insurance, a breakdown of seller-paid and buyer-paid charges, and evidence for any deduction. If a carrier bundles customs clearance with delivery, ask for a line-item breakdown before deciding what belongs in customs value or the import-tax base.
Classify the product and find the duty
Do not apply a generic “precious-metals rate.” Classification, origin and customs value can all affect duty. Obtain the destination’s tariff code for the exact product form and check the rate for the stated origin and shipment date.

European Union example
The European Commission’s customs guidance states: “To calculate the amount of duty payable (‘customs debt’ in EU law) when trading goods, three factors must be accounted for:” The three factors listed are the customs tariff, the value of the goods and the origin of the goods. EU tariff classification uses Combined Nomenclature codes; the applicable duty depends on the type of item and its origin. A gold coin, a platinum bar and a silver bracelet can therefore produce different results.
Other destinations
Use the importing territory’s official tariff schedule or a binding-classification process where available. Confirm whether a preferential agreement, investment-gold exemption, de minimis threshold or special treatment applies to your exact product. Do not assume that treatment granted to one metal, purity, product form or origin extends to another.
Calculate import VAT, GST or another import tax
Import tax is not always a percentage of the seller’s metal price alone. The taxable base may include customs value, duty, freight, insurance, clearance or other charges. Follow the destination’s calculation sequence and preserve the rate and date checked.

United Kingdom
HMRC says import VAT valuation is based on the customs value for duty, even where no duty is payable. Its list of incidental expenses includes commission, packing, transport, insurance, customs clearance, handling, loading and storage, subject to the applicable destination and timing rules. Foreign-currency components must be converted to sterling using the conversion rules that apply to the declaration. Verify the current VAT treatment for the exact product and any exemption before calculating.

South Africa
South African Revenue Service guidance states a 15% VAT rate and describes an added-tax-value calculation for imports from outside the Customs Union: customs value plus 10% of customs value plus non-rebated duties, with the resulting base multiplied by 15%. The 10% uplift does not apply to qualifying goods originating in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia or Eswatini. SARS last updated this page on 21 February 2025; recheck the rule before relying on it. This is a South African illustration, not a formula for another country.
Singapore
Singapore Customs directs importers to its local valuation methods, exchange-rate rules and freight-and-insurance guidance. The material includes flat-rate treatment in defined circumstances. Those methods apply to the Singapore route and facts for which they are prescribed; they must not be carried over to another destination.
European Union and other territories
EU member-state import VAT and any relief for qualifying investment metals depend on the product, classification, transaction and national implementation. Other territories may use GST, a sales tax or another import levy. Check the destination authority rather than borrowing a rate or tax base from a neighboring market.
Use a line-item worksheet
Enter an amount or a clearly documented assumption for every line. If a charge is already embedded in another line, mark it as included so it is not counted twice.

|---|---|
| Metal or product price | Invoice amount, product form, weight, purity, quantity and invoice currency. |
| Currency conversion | Rate, source, date and currency used for the customs declaration; keep a separate estimate of your bank or card conversion cost. |
| Customs-value adjustments | Required additions and permitted deductions for commissions, packing, freight, insurance or other elements under destination rules. |
| Customs value | The declared value after applying the destination’s valuation method. |
| Import duty and other levies | Tariff code, origin, rate, specific-duty basis if any, and resulting amount. |
| Import VAT, GST or equivalent | Tax rate and the destination-specific base, including any duty or delivery costs required in that base. |
| Freight and transit insurance | Buyer-paid amounts not already included in customs value, the tax base or the seller’s delivered price. |
| Brokerage and clearance | Broker fee, entry fee, storage, handling and documentation charges. |
| Carrier collection or handling | Amount the carrier charges to advance or collect duty and tax, if applicable. |
| Payment and foreign-exchange charges | Bank, card, wire or conversion fees that you will actually pay. |
| Estimated total buyer outlay | Seller amount plus each applicable duty, tax and buyer-paid charge, with every component counted once. |
Follow this calculation sequence
Enter an amount or a clearly documented assumption for every line. If a charge is already embedded in another line, mark it as included so it is not counted twice.
- Identify the destination. Confirm the importing country or customs territory, entry point and shipment date.
- Describe the goods precisely. Record metal, form, purity, weight, quantity, condition and origin.
- Confirm the invoice amount and currency. Separate discounts, commissions and charges that are not part of the product price.
- Read the delivery terms. Determine which party pays freight, insurance, export charges, import clearance, duty and tax.
- Convert values for customs. Apply the destination’s prescribed exchange-rate source and date, not an arbitrary market quote.
- Calculate customs value. Add required elements and deduct only separately documented amounts the local rules permit.
- Classify the goods. Check the official tariff schedule for the exact product and origin.
- Calculate duty and other levies. Record the tariff basis and rate used.
- Calculate import VAT, GST or equivalent. Apply the local tax base, which may include customs value, duty and specified delivery or clearance costs.
- Add remaining buyer charges. Include freight, insurance, brokerage, storage, carrier collection and payment costs only where they are not already included elsewhere.
- Audit the worksheet. Check that no freight, insurance, duty or tax appears twice and that assumptions are labeled with their date.
A transparent symbolic calculation
When destination-specific numbers are known, use separate variables rather than one flat percentage. For example:

Customs value = invoice value converted for customs + required valuation additions − permitted documented deductions
Duty = customs value × applicable ad-valorem rate (or the destination’s specific-duty method).
Import tax = destination tax rate × destination-prescribed tax base
Total buyer outlay = seller amount + duty + import tax + buyer-paid freight/insurance + clearance and carrier fees + payment or foreign-exchange charges
The last line is a checklist relationship, not a universal legal formula. Some freight, insurance or clearance components belong inside customs value or the import-tax base. Apply the local sequence first, then add only amounts still payable.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a universal precious-metals tax rate
Correct the mistake by checking the destination, product classification, origin and shipment date. A rate for bullion coins may not apply to jewelry or a different metal.

Applying tax directly to the spot price
Spot price is a market reference, not necessarily the invoice price or customs value. Use the commercial transaction and the destination’s valuation rules.
Ignoring origin
Origin can change preferential treatment and duty. Obtain origin evidence and do not substitute the seller’s posting location.
Double-counting delivery charges
Map each freight and insurance amount to one place in the worksheet. Determine whether it is already in a delivered quote, customs value or the import-tax base.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Using the wrong currency conversion
Separate the customs conversion from your own payment conversion. Record the source, date and currency for each.
Assuming “no duty” means “no import tax”
Import VAT or GST can still apply when duty is zero or exempt. Check both calculations independently.
Relying on an old rule
Rates, valuation guidance and reliefs change. Label the date checked and revisit the official authority immediately before ordering.
When to obtain professional confirmation
Ask the destination customs authority or a qualified customs broker to confirm classification and tax treatment when the shipment is high value, the product is unusual, origin is unclear, the seller offers a delivered-duty arrangement, or the value depends on complex freight and insurance apportionment. Keep the written answer with the invoice and entry records.

What you need before a numeric estimate is possible
A defensible total requires the destination country or customs territory, metal form and classification, origin, transaction price and currency, quantity, shipping terms, freight, insurance, payment method and shipment date. Without those facts, any numeric total or named duty/VAT rate would be guesswork. Complete the worksheet only after verifying those details against the destination’s current customs and tax guidance.
