How to Calculate the ROI of Branded Video Content

By TheFinanceBase Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical formula is: ROI (%) = [(incremental value attributable to the video − total video investment) ÷ total video investment] × 100. Use incremental value—not raw views, watch time, or every conversion a platform credits to the campaign. Define the investment boundary, measure what would have happened without the video, and state how any brand effects were valued.

A defensible result also distinguishes ROI from ROAS. ROI subtracts the investment before dividing by that investment; incremental ROAS divides incremental conversion value by ad spend. Both can be useful, but they answer different financial questions.

What branded-video ROI actually tells you

ROI answers whether the value created by a video campaign exceeded the costs included in your calculation. For a direct-response campaign, that value may be incremental profit, contribution margin, or revenue after an explicit adjustment. For a brand campaign, it may include a modeled monetary value for additional awareness, consideration, or purchase intent—but only if you disclose the valuation method and assumptions.

The word incremental is essential. A viewer may have purchased anyway, clicked another ad, or converted through an existing customer relationship. Giving the video credit for that outcome produces attributed return, not necessarily causal return. A randomized exposed-versus-control design is the strongest practical way to estimate what the video changed.

ROI and ROAS are not interchangeable

Measure Formula What it includes Best use
ROI (Incremental value − total investment) ÷ total investment × 100 All costs you define, such as production, rights, distribution, and measurement Whether the whole video investment generated a net return
Incremental ROAS (iROAS) Incremental conversion value ÷ total ad spend Ad spend in the denominator; it does not automatically include production or other costs Comparing paid-media efficiency
Cost per incremental conversion (iCPA) Total ad spend ÷ incremental conversions Ad spend and experimentally estimated incremental conversions Evaluating acquisition efficiency
Attributed ROAS Platform-attributed conversion value ÷ reported ad spend Credit assigned under a selected attribution rule Routine path and channel reporting, not proof of causality

If you publish an iROAS figure, label it iROAS. Calling it ROI while omitting production and other costs can materially overstate the campaign’s return.

Start with the business objective

Write the objective before choosing a metric. A video intended to generate immediate sales needs a conversion and value definition. A video intended to improve familiarity or preference needs a brand-lift measure. A campaign with both jobs needs separate outcome lines rather than one blended number that hides trade-offs.

Direct-response objective

Specify the action that matters: a completed order, qualified lead, subscription, application, or another measurable event. Decide whether the value is gross revenue, gross profit, contribution margin, or a fixed lead value. Revenue is not profit; if fulfilment, payment, returns, commissions, or servicing costs vary, use a margin-based value or explain the adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brand objective

Choose a measurable brand outcome such as awareness, ad recall, consideration, favorability, or purchase intent. A survey can show that exposed respondents answered differently from a control group. That percentage-point lift is not automatically a dollar amount. To include it in ROI, create a documented valuation model—for example, an expected number of additional future customers multiplied by expected contribution per customer—and identify every assumption.

Mixed objective

Report direct conversions and brand outcomes in separate rows. You may calculate a combined financial case only when the brand component has a defensible monetary model and the time horizon is long enough to capture delayed effects. Do not add survey points to revenue or treat a reach metric as financial value.

Define the investment boundary

There is no single platform-mandated definition of “video investment.” Choose a boundary that matches the decision you are making, write it down, and apply it consistently when comparing campaigns.

Cost category Examples to consider Include when
Production Pre-production, crew, locations, equipment rental, set construction, travel, insurance You are evaluating the full content project
Talent and rights Actor, creator, presenter, music, stock footage, image rights, usage extensions Payments are required to create or continue using the video
Post-production Editing, animation, color, sound mix, captions, localization, versioning These costs support the campaign assets
Distribution Paid media, platform fees, trafficking, placements, creator amplification You want the return on the campaign rather than production alone
Measurement Brand-lift surveys, conversion experiments, analytics implementation, data processing The measurement cost is incurred for this campaign
Internal labor and overhead Staff time, agency management, approved overhead allocation Your organization normally includes these costs in investment decisions

Do not mix scopes. A production-only denominator cannot be compared fairly with a full-campaign denominator. If you present several views, label them—for example, “full-campaign ROI” and “paid-media iROAS”—rather than silently changing the denominator.

Conversion-lift experiment

When the platform and account support it, randomly assign eligible users to a treatment group that can be exposed to the video and a control group withheld from the advertising. Google’s Conversion Lift documentation defines incremental conversions as:

Incremental conversions = Treatment conversions − Control conversions

It similarly defines incremental conversion value as the difference between the conversion value observed in the treatment and control groups. This estimates the additional actions associated with exposure under the study’s audience, dates, conversion definition, and eligibility rules. It is not a universal property of the creative; changing the audience, media mix, offer, or time window can change the result.

Brand-lift survey

A brand-lift study compares survey responses from an exposed group with responses from a control group. Common measures include awareness, ad recall, consideration, favorability, and purchase intent. The result can establish a lift in the measured response, but it does not provide a universal financial value for a percentage-point increase. Smaller absolute lifts generally require more responses to distinguish from sampling noise.

Standard attribution reporting

Attribution assigns credit to recorded interactions under a selected rule, such as last interaction or a data-driven model. It is useful for ongoing path and channel reporting, budget pacing, and operational diagnostics. It does not, by itself, show how many conversions would have happened without the video. Treat attributed revenue as attributed revenue, not as incremental value.

Delivery and engagement metrics

Impressions, reach, completed views, view-through rate, watch time, and clicks tell you whether the asset was delivered and how audiences responded. They are diagnostic signals, not financial returns. The Interactive Advertising Bureau noted on October 7, 2025, that video measurement signals, standards, and methodologies vary widely across web, social, connected-TV, and streaming environments. A view in one environment may not be directly comparable with a view in another.

Method Useful for Main comparison Limitation to state
Brand-lift survey Awareness, recall, consideration, favorability, purchase intent Exposed versus control survey responses Needs enough responses for small lifts; does not set a universal dollar value for brand equity
Conversion-lift experiment Incremental conversions and conversion value Treatment versus withheld control Availability and design depend on the platform and account; applies to the measured audience and period
Standard attribution Routine path and channel reporting Credit assigned to recorded interactions Credit is not automatically causal incrementality
Delivery and engagement Reach, viewing, watch time, and creative diagnostics Platform delivery signals Signals and standards vary by video environment and do not establish financial ROI alone

Estimate incremental value

For conversions

Use the experiment’s incremental conversions and an agreed value per conversion:

If you have order-level data, use the measured incremental order value instead of a single average. If you use an average, state whether it is revenue, gross profit, or contribution margin and identify the period used to calculate it. For leads, use an expected value that reflects the proportion that becomes customers and the margin those customers generate; do not assign every lead the value of a completed sale.

For delayed or repeat value

Brand videos can influence decisions after the campaign ends. Set a pre-specified observation window and avoid extending it after seeing the result. If you include repeat purchases or customer lifetime value, document retention, discounting, cancellations, refunds, and the share of future behavior that the model attributes to the video. A long-horizon model should be shown separately from the short-term observed result so readers can see the difference between measured and forecast value.

For brand lift

First report the measured lift in its native unit, such as a two-percentage-point increase in consideration. If you convert that lift into money, show the chain of assumptions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Estimate the number of people represented by the measured audience.
  2. Estimate how the lift changes the probability of a future action.
  3. Estimate the number of additional actions over a stated time horizon.
  4. Apply expected contribution per action, net of relevant costs.
  5. Run sensitivity cases so readers can see how the ROI changes if the assumptions are lower or higher.

Neither a brand-lift provider nor a platform definition supplies a generally valid dollar price for awareness or consideration. The valuation is your organization’s financial model and should be labeled as such.

Apply the ROI formulas

Once the incremental value and cost boundary are fixed, calculate:

ROI (%) = [(Incremental value attributable to the video − total video investment) ÷ total video investment] × 100

For comparison, calculate paid-media efficiency separately:

And, when acquisition cost is relevant:

iCPA = total ad spend ÷ incremental conversions

A positive ROI means the modeled incremental value exceeded the included investment. A negative ROI means it did not. A zero result means the modeled value equaled the investment. These interpretations depend on the value definition; a revenue-based ROI and a contribution-margin ROI are not equivalent.

Worked example with hypothetical numbers

Assume a campaign has the following costs:

  • Production, talent, rights, and post-production: $52,000
  • Paid distribution: $38,000
  • Measurement: $10,000
  • Total investment: $100,000

A conversion-lift experiment estimates 1,250 incremental orders. The company values each order at $112 in contribution margin after product and fulfilment costs:

Incremental value = 1,250 × $112 = $140,000

The full-campaign ROI is:

ROI = [($140,000 − $100,000) ÷ $100,000] × 100 = 40%

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The corresponding iROAS uses only paid distribution in the denominator:

iROAS = $140,000 ÷ $38,000 = 3.68

These figures are illustrative arithmetic, not a performance benchmark. If the $140,000 were revenue rather than contribution margin, the ROI would need to be recalculated after variable costs. If the 1,250 orders came from ordinary attribution rather than a treatment-control estimate, the result would be attributed ROI, not experimentally measured incremental ROI.

A practical workflow from brief to report

  1. Write the objective. State whether the primary outcome is incremental sales or leads, awareness, consideration, preference, or a defined combination.
  2. Define the outcome and value. Name the conversion event, value basis, brand-lift question, observation window, and any monetary model for brand effects.
  3. Freeze the cost boundary. List production, talent, rights, post-production, distribution, measurement, and any approved labor or overhead allocation that will count.
  4. Choose the study design before launch. Prefer a randomized exposed-versus-control design for causal conversion estimates. If that is unavailable, label attribution and modeling as non-causal.
  5. Set eligibility and timing. Record geography, audience, device or environment, campaign dates, frequency rules, conversion window, and exclusions. These conditions define what the estimate applies to.
  6. Instrument the outcomes. Verify conversion tags, value parameters, survey cells, holdout settings, and deduplication before spending begins.
  7. Run the campaign without changing the test midstream. Unplanned audience, budget, creative, or offer changes can complicate interpretation. Record any changes and their dates.
  8. Check data quality. Look for missing values, duplicate conversions, uneven treatment and control delivery, survey response imbalance, fraud, and unusual traffic.
  9. Calculate incremental value and ROI. Use the formulas above, preserve the chosen cost boundary, and report iROAS separately if it answers a paid-media question.
  10. Show uncertainty and assumptions. Include the study period, audience, sample or response counts where available, confidence interval or other uncertainty measure supplied by the method, and every modeled input.
  11. Make the decision. Decide whether to scale, revise the creative or offer, retest with a different audience, or stop. Base that decision on the objective and the uncertainty, not on views alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How to interpret an uncertain or null result

A result near zero does not prove that the video had no effect. It may mean the true effect is small relative to the study’s uncertainty, the audience was too narrow, the observation window was too short, or the message was not distinctive. Google’s brand-lift guidance notes that more responses are generally needed to detect smaller absolute lifts.

Creative timing can also affect interpretation. If branding appears only at the end, viewers who do not finish may not connect the message to the advertiser. Conversely, branding placed very early may improve recognition without creating enough persuasive context to lift conversions. Google’s video-branding guidance cautions that early branding alone may not significantly increase conversions and that late or subtle branding can make attribution to the advertised brand harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Report the estimate with its uncertainty rather than converting a non-significant result into a confident success or failure. A decision to rerun the test should identify what will change: sample size, audience, creative opening, offer, frequency, or measurement window.

Make comparisons fair across channels and campaigns

Before comparing two videos, align the variables that can change the estimate:

  • Outcome: Compare incremental conversions with incremental conversions, or awareness lift with awareness lift—not one against the other.
  • Audience: Use comparable geography, eligibility, customer status, and reach.
  • Exposure and control: Confirm that treatment and control definitions are consistent.
  • Time: Match campaign dates, conversion windows, and any delayed-value period.
  • Cost scope: Include the same production, distribution, rights, and measurement categories.
  • Environment: Note whether delivery occurred on the open web, social platforms, connected TV, or streaming services; their measurement signals are not uniform.
  • Value basis: Use the same revenue, margin, lead-value, or modeled brand-value definition.

A lower iROAS on one channel may coexist with a higher full-campaign ROI if production and distribution costs differ. Conversely, a high attributed ROAS can fall below zero on an incremental ROI basis if most credited conversions would have happened without the video.

Common calculation mistakes and fixes

Counting views as value

Mistake: Treating completed views, watch time, or reach as dollars returned.
Fix: Use these metrics to diagnose delivery and engagement, then connect the campaign to an incremental conversion or measured brand outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using attributed conversions as incremental conversions

Mistake: Subtracting total campaign cost from platform-attributed revenue and calling the result causal ROI.
Fix: Use a treatment-control experiment when feasible. Otherwise label the result as attributed or modeled and explain the attribution rule.

Calling iROAS ROI

Mistake: Dividing conversion value by ad spend while excluding production, rights, and measurement costs.
Fix: Report iROAS for paid-media efficiency and calculate ROI with the full cost boundary chosen for the business decision.

Valuing brand lift without assumptions

Mistake: Assigning a dollar amount to a percentage-point awareness lift without showing how it was derived.
Fix: Report the lift in percentage points first; if monetized, disclose audience size, expected behavior change, contribution per action, time horizon, and sensitivity cases.

Comparing incompatible environments

Mistake: Treating a platform-defined view or conversion as identical across web, social, connected-TV, and streaming inventory.
Fix: Document each environment’s signal, methodology, audience, and control design before ranking results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring negative or delayed economics

Mistake: Using gross sales while ignoring refunds, fulfilment, discounts, or the time needed for a brand effect to convert.
Fix: Choose a margin or contribution basis where appropriate and state the observation window and forecast assumptions.

What a transparent ROI report should contain

A reader or finance reviewer should be able to reproduce the calculation. Include:

  • The objective and primary outcome.
  • The treatment, control, or attribution method.
  • Audience, geography, environment, campaign dates, and conversion window.
  • Incremental conversions or measured brand-lift results, with uncertainty information supplied by the method.
  • The value basis: revenue, profit, contribution margin, lead value, or modeled brand value.
  • Every included cost category and the total investment.
  • ROI, with the formula and units shown.
  • iROAS and iCPA, if paid-media efficiency is also relevant.
  • Assumptions, exclusions, data-quality checks, and any changes during the campaign.
  • A sensitivity range for modeled or delayed value.

This format keeps a measured causal result separate from an attributed or forecast result. It also makes clear whether the campaign paid back the entire video investment or only generated efficient media against ad spend.

Decision rule for the next campaign

Use full-campaign ROI to decide whether the investment created net value, iROAS and iCPA to manage paid distribution, and brand-lift measures to understand changes in perception. Scale only when the result matches the objective, the cost and value definitions are complete, and the uncertainty is acceptable for the financial risk. When evidence is weak, improve the experiment or the creative rather than presenting a precise-looking number that the design cannot support.
