How to Calculate the Real Value of a 2.625% Business Credit Card Rewards Rate

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The advertised 2.625% rate is a conditional calculation, not a universal cash-back rate. The underlying card earns 1.5% on purchases; a 75% Preferred Rewards for Business bonus raises that rate to 1.5% × 1.75 = 2.625%. Bank of America currently displays the maximum as 2.62% after rounding on its product page. To find your real return, subtract financing costs, transaction charges and the opportunity cost of keeping qualifying money in the required accounts.

The maximum applies only when an eligible business checking relationship is paired with Platinum Honors status. The issuer says Platinum Honors requires a three-month combined daily balance of at least $100,000 in qualifying Bank of America business deposit accounts and/or Merrill business investment accounts. If you already maintain that balance for business reasons, the bonus may be relatively inexpensive. If you must move money from a higher-value use, the foregone return can outweigh the extra rewards.

What the 2.625% figure actually represents

The rate comes from multiplying the card’s standard cash-back rate by the maximum relationship multiplier:

1.5% base cash back × 1.75 maximum bonus multiplier = 2.625%.

That is the exact arithmetic behind the headline number. On its current Business Advantage Unlimited Cash Rewards Mastercard page, Bank of America presents the maximum as 2.62%, a two-decimal display of the same calculation. The issuer states that the card earns 1.5% on all purchases and that eligible customers can earn up to 2.62% with a Bank of America business checking account and Platinum Honors membership. See the current product terms at Bank of America’s Business Advantage Unlimited Cash Rewards Mastercard page.

“Up to” matters. A business without the qualifying relationship does not automatically receive 2.625% on every purchase. The card’s ordinary earning rate and the relationship-enhanced rate are different cases, so any calculation should state which one applies.

Rate or figure What it means Use in your calculation
1.5% Standard cash back on purchases stated by the issuer Use when the maximum relationship bonus does not apply
75% Maximum Preferred Rewards for Business bonus multiplier Multiply the base rate by 1.75
2.625% Exact mathematical result of 1.5% × 1.75 Useful for precise illustrations
2.62% Maximum rate currently displayed by the issuer after rounding Use when describing the advertised figure as shown on the product page

Check whether you can receive the maximum rate

The relationship bonus is tied to Preferred Rewards for Business. Bank of America’s program page lists the following qualifying balance thresholds; confirm the current terms before applying because program requirements can change. The balance is described as a combined daily balance maintained for three months in eligible Bank of America business deposit accounts and/or Merrill business investment accounts. Program details are available at Preferred Rewards for Business.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Program tier Threshold stated by the issuer Why it matters here
Gold At least $20,000 Entry tier; the available program terms do not establish that this tier delivers the 75% multiplier
Platinum At least $50,000 Higher tier; the exact multiplier should be verified in current terms
Platinum Honors At least $100,000 The tier associated with the maximum 75% bonus used in the 2.625% calculation

Interpret “three-month combined daily balance” literally

This is not simply a one-day deposit test. The issuer describes Platinum Honors qualification using a three-month combined daily balance. Include only accounts the program recognizes, combine the eligible business deposit and investment balances as allowed, and consider whether withdrawals or market movements could pull the balance below the required level. A business that can meet the threshold only briefly should not treat the maximum rate as guaranteed.

Separate the banking relationship from card spending

The card rewards your purchases, while the relationship bonus depends on qualifying balances and account status. Keep those two conditions in separate lines in your worksheet. A large purchase volume cannot substitute for the required relationship, and maintaining the relationship does not create rewards without eligible card spending.

Calculate gross rewards before considering costs

Start with the simple calculation:

Gross rewards = eligible purchases × applicable rewards rate.

For a cardholder who actually receives the exact 2.625% rate, the following illustrations show the gross amount. They are not statements of net profit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Eligible purchases At exact 2.625% At issuer-displayed 2.62% At 1.5% base rate
$1,000 $26.25 $26.20 $15.00
$10,000 $262.50 $262.00 $150.00
$50,000 $1,312.50 $1,310.00 $750.00
$100,000 $2,625.00 $2,620.00 $1,500.00

The $10,000 example produces $262.50 using the exact mathematical rate, or $262 when you multiply by the displayed 2.62% figure. The five-cent difference is a presentation-rounding illustration, not evidence of how every individual transaction is posted. Use the issuer’s reward ledger and current terms for the amount actually credited.

Use eligible spending, not total business outflow

Put only purchases that earn rewards into the numerator. Do not assume that every payment leaving a business account qualifies. Review the card agreement for exclusions, returns, credits and any transaction categories that do not earn rewards. The available product information establishes the headline rate on purchases but does not provide a universal list of every possible excluded transaction.

Convert gross rewards into real net value

A more useful equation is:

Net value = rewards actually earned − card and transaction costs − financing costs − opportunity cost of the qualifying funds’ best realistic alternative use.

Each term answers a different question. Rewards are the cash credited under the applicable rate. Card and transaction costs include any charges associated with keeping or using the account. Financing costs are the interest and related expenses caused by carrying a balance. Opportunity cost is what the qualifying money could reasonably have earned or accomplished elsewhere. No single universal amount is established for these costs, so your result must use your own figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opportunity cost is often the decisive variable

If you already keep $100,000 in the qualifying accounts because the money supports payroll reserves, operating liquidity or an investment plan, the incremental cost of the relationship may be small. If you move the money solely to obtain the bonus, compare the rewards with the best alternative use you give up.

For an illustrative, hypothetical calculation, suppose $100,000 would otherwise earn 4% for a full year. The foregone return would be $4,000. The relationship raises the rate from 1.5% to 2.625%, an incremental 1.125 percentage points (0.01125 as a decimal). Ignoring taxes, fees and compounding, the additional spending needed to recover that $4,000 would be:

$4,000 ÷ 0.01125 = about $355,556 of annual eligible spending.

This is a decision example, not a promised market return. Replace the hypothetical 4% with the return, debt reduction, inventory purchase or other business use you can realistically achieve. If the money would earn nothing and is already required for the business, the opportunity-cost line may be close to zero. If it would fund expensive debt repayment or a productive investment, the cost may be much higher.

Account for the card’s stated fee structure

Bank of America lists no annual fee for this card and says rewards can be redeemed flexibly. No annual fee does not mean no possible cost: transaction charges, returned-payment fees, foreign-transaction terms or other account charges may still matter. The supplied product information does not quantify each of those costs, so enter the amounts that apply to your account rather than assuming they are zero.

Include financing costs even when the rewards rate looks high

Rewards are not a substitute for paying the statement. If a business carries a balance, add the interest attributable to those purchases to the net-value calculation. A short-lived float may have a different cost from a balance carried for months, but both belong in the worksheet. Calculate the cost from the actual annual percentage rate, balance and number of days or billing cycles; do not subtract a generic estimate.

A step-by-step worksheet for your business

  1. Identify the rate you are entitled to. Write 1.5% unless your eligible business checking relationship and current Preferred Rewards for Business status support the higher rate. If you are using the headline calculation, record both the exact 2.625% arithmetic and the issuer’s displayed 2.62% figure.
  2. Measure eligible annual spending. Use the purchases that actually earn rewards, after removing returns, credits and excluded transactions shown in your agreement.
  3. Calculate gross rewards. Multiply eligible spending by the applicable rate. Keep a separate line for the base-rate result so you can see the value created by the relationship bonus.
  4. Verify the balance requirement. Confirm that qualifying Bank of America business deposits and/or Merrill business investments meet the three-month combined daily balance requirement for Platinum Honors, rather than merely touching $100,000 on one date.
  5. Price the funds’ alternative use. Estimate the return, interest savings, liquidity benefit or business investment the same money could produce elsewhere. Use a realistic, supportable figure for your circumstances.
  6. Enter direct costs. Add any annual, transaction or account costs that apply. The issuer states that this card has no annual fee, but your other charges must come from your own terms and statements.
  7. Enter financing costs. Add interest and related charges if you do not pay the statement balance in full.
  8. Subtract every cost from rewards. The remainder is your estimated net value. Run the calculation again using a lower spending year, a lower balance, and the base 1.5% rate to see how sensitive the result is.

Compare the card with alternatives on the same basis

A fair comparison uses identical spending, time period and cost assumptions. Compare the following fields rather than choosing the largest headline percentage:

Comparison axis Question to answer
Base earning rate What does the card earn without a relationship bonus?
Boosted earning rate What status, account or balance creates the higher rate, and is it available to this business?
Qualifying balance How much must remain in eligible accounts, for how long, and what counts toward the balance?
Opportunity cost What return or business use is sacrificed by keeping that money in the qualifying relationship?
Fees and transaction costs Are there annual fees or charges that reduce the reward value?
Financing cost Will the business pay in full, or will interest consume the rewards?
Reward type Is the benefit cash, points or miles, and what redemption value is realistic?
Redemption restrictions Can rewards be deposited, applied as a statement credit or used only in a particular channel?
Actual spending fit Does the business spend enough in eligible categories to justify the relationship and administrative effort?

Do not treat points per dollar as cash back

A related Bank of America travel card illustrates why the reward unit matters. NerdWallet reports 2.625 points per dollar at Platinum Honors and a value of one cent per point for eligible travel redemptions in its review at Bank of America Business Advantage Travel Card Review. At that particular redemption value, 2.625 points per dollar can equate to 2.625% of eligible travel value. Outside that redemption, the points may be worth more, less or subject to restrictions. A points rate alone therefore does not establish a cash-equivalent return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How redemption affects the value you receive

The cash-rewards card’s issuer lists three redemption routes: a deposit into an eligible Bank of America checking or savings account, a statement credit, or a mailed check. Those options make the reward easier to value than a points program with variable redemption rates. Still, record when the reward becomes available and whether a statement credit changes the cash you would otherwise pay.

Worked decision examples

Business already maintains the qualifying balance

A company keeps more than $100,000 in eligible accounts as a standing operating reserve and pays its card statement in full. It has $120,000 of annual eligible purchases. At the exact 2.625% rate, gross rewards are $3,150. The company should then subtract any transaction charges and any measurable difference between the account’s return and the return it would have earned in its preferred alternative. Because the balance was already needed, the opportunity cost may be limited to that return difference rather than the full value of moving $100,000.

Business must move investment funds

Another company has $100,000 invested elsewhere and would earn a demonstrable return if it stayed there. It spends $200,000 annually. The relationship produces $5,250 at 2.625%, compared with $3,000 at the 1.5% base rate, so the bonus adds $2,250 before costs. If moving the funds sacrifices more than $2,250 in realistic annual value, the higher headline rate does not improve the company’s net position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Business cannot reliably maintain Platinum Honors

A seasonal business may have enough cash during one quarter but fall below the three-month combined daily balance requirement during slower months. It should model the year at the rate it can reliably retain, not at the maximum rate it might briefly obtain. A lower but dependable rate can be more valuable than a higher conditional rate that disappears when balances fluctuate.

Business carries a balance

If a business finances purchases, calculate interest first. For example, a $10,000 purchase generating $262.50 of gross rewards at 2.625% produces little or no net benefit if the financing cost attributable to that purchase exceeds $262.50. The exact result depends on the card’s APR, balance and repayment period; use statement data rather than a generic interest assumption.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Calling 2.625% an unconditional rate. Correction: state the 1.5% base rate and the Platinum Honors relationship requirement beside the headline figure.
  • Confusing 2.62% with a different product rate. Correction: explain that 2.62% is the issuer’s displayed rounded maximum, while 2.625% is the multiplication result.
  • Using a one-day balance to prove eligibility. Correction: track the three-month combined daily balance in qualifying accounts.
  • Counting total spending instead of eligible purchases. Correction: reconcile the reward-earning transactions to statements after returns and credits.
  • Calling gross rewards profit. Correction: subtract financing, transaction and opportunity costs before drawing a conclusion.
  • Valuing points at their face value. Correction: convert points using a documented redemption value and note the redemption conditions.
  • Ignoring a lower-spend year. Correction: run conservative, expected and high-spend scenarios; the relationship cost is easier to justify when eligible volume is consistent.
  • Assuming current terms are permanent. Correction: check the issuer’s product and Preferred Rewards pages again before opening the account and whenever the program status changes.

A practical decision rule

The 2.625% structure is financially attractive when three conditions align: the business can maintain Platinum Honors without sacrificing a better use for its funds, it has substantial eligible spending, and it pays the balance in full. If any one of those conditions fails, calculate the base-rate alternative and the opportunity cost before treating the bonus as valuable.

Use the exact rate for internal modeling, label the issuer’s advertised figure as 2.62%, and report the result as net value rather than as a guaranteed return. That approach keeps the headline arithmetic accurate while showing what the reward is actually worth to your business.
