Add the exact on-road purchase price, financing interest, home and public charging, insurance, maintenance, tyres, charger installation and taxes; then subtract eligible incentives and the vehicle’s eventual resale or buyback value.
For a Hyundai CRETA Electric, battery-as-a-service (BaaS) makes the calculation different: you pay a lower vehicle price but add a published battery fee of ₹3.9 per kilometre. The result can favour BaaS or a full-battery purchase depending mainly on annual kilometres, financing, electricity tariffs, incentives, charging access and how long you keep the car.

The TCO formula to use
NITI Aayog’s EV methodology treats ownership as a whole-life calculation covering purchase, operation and residual value. A practical worksheet is:
Real TCO = on-road acquisition cost + financing interest + electricity + public-charging fees + maintenance and tyres + insurance + charger and installation + taxes − incentives − resale or buyback value.

Calculate the result for a defined ownership period, such as three, five or eight years. For a per-kilometre figure, divide the total undiscounted cost by kilometres driven during that period. A long-term analysis can also discount future payments using a rate that reflects your opportunity cost of money.

Fix the vehicle, location and ownership horizon first
Use the exact Hyundai configuration
Record the Hyundai model, trim, battery arrangement and optional equipment. An ex-showroom headline is not an ownership price. Obtain the invoice for your state and include registration, road tax, insurance, accessories and dealer charges. Keep BaaS and full-battery versions as separate rows rather than blending their prices.
Set annual kilometres and the holding period
Enter a realistic annual distance from your commuting, family and holiday driving. Test at least 5,000, 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 kilometres a year when comparing BaaS with a purchased battery. Choose the planned ownership period and include a low- and high-resale case; a three-year commuter calculation can produce a different answer from an eight-year ownership calculation.

Separate cash flow from economic cost
A monthly EMI is a cash-flow measure, not the complete cost. Record the down payment, principal and total interest separately. A cash buyer should still show the opportunity cost of tying up money if making a discounted-cash-flow comparison. For a financed purchase, include interest in the TCO even though principal is represented by the vehicle’s acquisition cost. Do not count the same principal twice.
What Hyundai’s CRETA Electric BaaS changes
Hyundai announced CRETA Electric BaaS at ₹10.99 lakh ex-showroom, with battery usage fees starting at ₹3.9 per kilometre. Hyundai’s illustrative explanation shows ₹3,900 a month at 1,000 kilometres and contrasts that BaaS entry price with a ₹18.03 lakh traditional entry price. Hyundai also describes the battery-price separation as reducing the upfront cost by around ₹7 lakh.
| Item | Traditional full-battery purchase | CRETA Electric BaaS |
|---|---|---|
| Published entry reference | ₹18.03 lakh ex-showroom in Hyundai’s illustration | ₹10.99 lakh ex-showroom announced by Hyundai |
| Battery payment | Included in the vehicle invoice and financed principal | ₹3.9 per kilometre starting fee, added to annual running cost |
| Electricity | Home and public charging calculated from actual energy use | Home and public charging calculated separately from the battery fee |
| Finance | Interest on the higher vehicle amount | Interest on the lower vehicle amount, subject to the BaaS contract and lender terms |
| Other TCO lines | Insurance, maintenance, tyres, charger, taxes and resale | Insurance, maintenance, tyres, charger, taxes and resale |
At 12,000 kilometres a year, the published starting battery fee alone is 12,000 × ₹3.9 = ₹46,800 a year, before electricity. That is a calculation from Hyundai’s published rate, not a quoted annual package price. At the four test distances, the fee would be:
| Annual distance | Derived BaaS fee at ₹3.9/km |
|---|---|
| 5,000 km | ₹19,500 |
| 10,000 km | ₹39,000 |
| 15,000 km | ₹58,500 |
| 20,000 km | ₹78,000 |
A rough fee-only comparison of the approximately ₹7 lakh upfront difference divided by ₹3.9 per kilometre is about 179,500 kilometres. It is not a TCO break-even point: financing, taxes, incentives, resale, insurance and the precise contract can move the outcome substantially. The fee may also be quoted as a starting rate, so confirm the applicable trim, contract duration, payment method, taxes and any mileage or termination rules before signing.
Build a true BaaS break-even test
Make one column for the full-battery vehicle and one for BaaS. In the first year, enter the complete on-road price, loan interest, electricity, insurance, service, charger and taxes for each. In every BaaS year, add annual kilometres multiplied by ₹3.9 to the operating-cost column. Then apply the different loan balances and ending resale assumptions. Run the calculation at each annual-distance scenario and for both cash and financed purchases. The result is a range, not one universal answer: low-mileage owners preserve more of BaaS’s upfront advantage, while high-mileage owners pay more in cumulative battery fees.
Calculate charging cost from your own electricity use
Convert kilometres into grid energy
Begin with the car’s real-world efficiency in kilometres per kilowatt-hour, not a brochure assumption. The basic relationship explained by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is:
Rank #2
- High Quality Material: The coaster is made of environmentally friendly silicone, safe, non-toxic and odorless. Soft with toughness, easily embedded in the cup holder. Very durable, wear-resistant, long service life. High temperature resistance, can withstand 100 ℃ high temperature water cups.
- Wide Compatibility: The coaster has a diameter of 3.15 inches and a height of 1.18 inches, which is widely used in most vehicles, such as SUV, sedan, MPV, etc., as long as the size fits your car cup holder.
- Protection Function: Our car cup holder coaster has a carry handle design and a stand-up ring edge on its edge to effectively prevent food crumbs, drinks and water from leaking out and preventing the car cup holder from getting dirty.Meanwhile,Thickened design effectively prevents the cup holder from being scratched by the cup when driving on bumpy roads and eliminates the annoying thumping sound, making your journey more enjoyable.
- Easy to Use and Clean: With embedded installation, you just need to put it flat on the car cupholder. It is also very quick to remove, there is a small bump on the coaster, pinch it and you can easily remove the coaster. It is very easy to clean, rinse with water or wipe with a wet towel (be careful not to clean with sharp tools).
- 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.
Energy cost = battery energy in kWh × electricity tariff per kWh.
For annual use, calculate:
Grid kWh = annual kilometres ÷ km/kWh × (1 + charging-loss allowance).
Charging losses depend on the vehicle, charger and installation. Put the allowance in its own spreadsheet cell so you can test a lower and higher case instead of hiding it in the efficiency figure.
Separate home and public charging
Split the grid energy between home and public charging. Multiply home kWh by the applicable distribution-company tariff, including a time-of-use rate where one applies. Multiply public kWh by the network’s energy price and add session, parking and idle fees. Public charging can cost materially more than home charging, so replacing it with a national average can make an India-wide estimate misleading.
Hyundai says the myHyundai app can discover, navigate to and access more than 30,000 charging points across India. That improves route planning, but it does not make every session the same price or guarantee availability at your destination.
Check whether home charging is actually feasible
Before treating home energy as the default, confirm that your parking space has a permitted electrical connection. Apartment residents may need housing-society approval, a dedicated meter or a longer cable route. Record any sanctioned-load increase, rewiring, protective devices or civil work as a one-time infrastructure cost. If you cannot charge at home, model a much higher public-charging share rather than assuming the home tariff.

Worked charging illustration
The following is a method demonstration, not a claim about CRETA Electric efficiency or tariffs. Assume 12,000 kilometres a year, 6 km/kWh, 10% charging losses, 80% of energy at home at ₹8/kWh and 20% in public at ₹15/kWh:
- Base battery energy: 12,000 ÷ 6 = 2,000 kWh.
- Grid energy after losses: 2,000 × 1.10 = 2,200 kWh.
- Home energy: 2,200 × 80% = 1,760 kWh; home cost = ₹14,080.
- Public energy: 2,200 × 20% = 440 kWh; public energy cost = ₹6,600 before session or parking fees.
- Total electricity in this illustration: ₹20,680 a year.
- With BaaS, add the derived ₹46,800 battery fee: energy plus battery fee = ₹67,480, before insurance, maintenance, finance, charger and taxes.
Replace every illustrative input with your meter tariff, charging history and observed efficiency before making a purchase decision. Keep a separate line for public-session minimums, parking and idle penalties because a low per-kWh price can still produce an expensive visit.
Add maintenance, tyres, insurance and infrastructure
Maintenance is not zero
Budget scheduled inspections, tyres, wheel alignment, brake servicing, cabin filters, wipers, software or connectivity charges where applicable, and an annual reserve for unexpected repairs. Electric drivetrains may have fewer engine-related services, but tyres, brakes, suspension, air-conditioning and body repairs still cost money. Hyundai’s warranty policy excludes normal maintenance and wear items, so do not treat those expenses as warranty-covered.

Use a calendar as well as a kilometre trigger. A low-mileage car can still need time-based inspections, insurance renewal and replacement of age-sensitive consumables. For a high-mileage case, bring tyre replacement and alignment forward according to actual wear rather than spreading a single estimate evenly across all years.

Insurance and protection
Use a comprehensive premium for the exact registration location and driver profile. Show optional battery, charging-equipment and roadside-assistance protection as separate lines so you can see the cost of a broader policy. Insurance premiums can vary more by location, usage and claim history than by a small change in electricity efficiency.
Ask whether the policy treats a BaaS battery as owned, leased or separately covered, and retain the insurer’s wording with the contract. Do not assume that a vehicle policy automatically covers a wall-box, portable EVSE or damage caused by an electrical installation.
Home charger and electrical work
Hyundai says CRETA Electric HC variants include a 7.4 kW wall-box charger. Price the complete installation rather than only the hardware: compatible connector, cable run, earthing, protection devices, meter or load upgrades and any parking alteration. Confirm that the selected variant, apartment wiring and sanctioned load support the charger. A portable Type 2 EVSE can be a secondary backup, but it does not remove the need to check current rating and earthing.
Place the charger cost in year one, then test a replacement or repair reserve separately. If the car is parked away from the house, include the cost and practicality of cable routing or a dedicated charging bay; otherwise the spreadsheet may show an artificially cheap home-charging assumption.
Account for warranty and tail risks
Hyundai’s warranty table lists a CRETA Electric vehicle warranty of three years with unlimited kilometres. Hyundai’s product information states an eight-year or 160,000-kilometre battery warranty. Read the applicable terms for exclusions, transferability, required servicing and capacity-related coverage; a warranty reduces risk but does not eliminate ownership costs.
Battery replacement outside warranty is a low-frequency, high-cost possibility. Do not insert an invented replacement price into the base case. Instead, add a sensitivity row for a severe battery event and show how that would change the per-kilometre result. Keep the probability assumption visible rather than presenting the scenario as an expected bill. Also model the possibility that resale buyers value remaining battery-warranty coverage differently at three, five and eight years.
Subtract incentives and resale only when they are real
Verify state-specific benefits
Registration treatment, road tax, electricity tariffs, public-charging prices and incentives differ by state and can outweigh a modest efficiency difference. Check the buyer’s state, purchase date, vehicle category and scheme window before reducing the TCO. NITI Aayog notes that state subsidies differ. Government material for PM E-DRIVE describes a ₹10,900 crore scheme outlay and charging-station deployment, but its incentive table is category- and period-specific; do not assume that a headline scheme amount is a buyer rebate.
Enter an incentive only after confirming who receives it, whether the dealer has already netted it from the invoice, and whether registration or documentation conditions apply. If the scheme could expire during your buying window, show a no-incentive case instead of treating a possible benefit as guaranteed cash.

Model resale and assured buyback separately
At the chosen horizon, subtract an ordinary-market resale estimate based on age, kilometres, condition and local demand. If you qualify for Hyundai’s assured buyback, model it as a separate scenario: Hyundai announced 60% through three years or 45,000 kilometres for CRETA Electric. That percentage is not a universal resale value; eligibility, mileage, time limit and contract conditions matter. Do not use the buyback percentage and a normal-market resale estimate in the same case.
NITI Aayog’s framework also identifies battery-pack resale value as a possible driver. Include it only when a documented contract or market quotation supports it. Otherwise set the value to zero and test any optimistic battery or vehicle residual separately.
Compare against petrol or diesel on the same basis
A fair comparison uses the same annual kilometres, ownership period, financing treatment and resale convention for the Hyundai EV and an otherwise suitable petrol or diesel alternative.
| Comparison axis | How to calculate it |
|---|---|
| Upfront price | Exact on-road price in the same state, including taxes and registration |
| Finance | Same down-payment policy, loan term and interest method |
| Energy or fuel | EV: annual km ÷ km/kWh × tariff; ICE: annual km ÷ km/l × local fuel price |
| Maintenance | Scheduled service, tyres, alignment, consumables and repair reserve |
| Insurance | Comparable comprehensive cover and add-ons |
| Infrastructure | EV charger and electrical work; any equivalent parking or equipment cost |
| Risk and coverage | Battery, vehicle and roadside warranty terms |
| Resale | Expected end value or a contractually eligible buyback |
| Access | Home-charging feasibility and public-network dependence |
Show both total rupees and rupees per kilometre. For a long horizon, a discounted-cash-flow version is useful: discount each year’s net cost by your chosen rate and subtract the discounted resale value in the final year. Keep the undiscounted view as well, because it shows the actual cash paid.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA spreadsheet layout that prevents omissions
Use one row per year and separate columns for the following:
- Opening loan balance, principal repaid and interest.
- Home kWh, home tariff and home-charging cost.
- Public kWh, energy price, session fees, parking and idle charges.
- BaaS kilometres and battery fee, if applicable.
- Scheduled service, tyres, alignment, consumables and repair reserve.
- Insurance and optional battery or charger cover.
- Charger installation and any one-time electrical work in year one.
- Taxes, incentives and their eligibility dates.
- Estimated resale or buyback proceeds in the final year.
Run at least three sensitivities: low, expected and high annual kilometres; low and high home-charging share; and conservative, central and optimistic resale. A cash purchase and a financed purchase should be separate worksheets, because a lower BaaS invoice can reduce interest even while the per-kilometre battery fee increases with usage.
Read the output in three ways
First, inspect total rupees over the ownership period: this is the amount the household ultimately commits after resale. Second, inspect annual cash cost, which reveals years with a charger installation, major tyres or unusually high public charging. Third, inspect rupees per kilometre, while remembering that this metric rises sharply if the car is driven less than planned. A low-use owner should not assume a low per-kilometre result merely because electricity is inexpensive.
Common calculation mistakes
- Using ex-showroom price as TCO: add registration, road tax, insurance, accessories and dealer charges.
- Counting only the charging bill: include financing, insurance, maintenance, tyres, charger work and resale.
- Assuming zero maintenance: warranty exclusions still leave wear items and scheduled service with the owner.
- Applying a national electricity average: use the buyer’s distribution-company tariff and public-network prices.
- Ignoring charging losses: calculate energy drawn from the grid, not only energy stored in the battery.
- Treating BaaS as a monthly subscription: the published starting fee is per kilometre; annual cost rises with use.
- Subtracting an incentive without checking eligibility: verify state, category, date and scheme conditions.
- Using the 60% buyback as guaranteed resale: apply it only when the contract’s time, mileage and eligibility conditions are met.
- Hiding risk in a single guess: show battery, tariff, public-charging and resale sensitivities explicitly.
- Mixing cash and financed cases: show interest and opportunity cost consistently, without counting principal twice.
- Assuming every listed charger is available: verify connector compatibility, operating status, payment rules and destination access.
How to make the final decision
Choose the full-battery version when the higher financed amount is manageable, annual driving is high enough that a per-kilometre battery fee would dominate, and you value owning the complete vehicle asset. Choose BaaS only after confirming the contract, eligible mileage terms, insurance treatment, charging requirements and resale conditions; its lower entry price can be valuable for cash flow, but the battery fee is a recurring operating cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in the real cost of owning a Hyundai electric car?
Include the exact on-road acquisition cost, financing interest, home electricity after charging losses, public-charging fees, scheduled service, tyres, repairs, insurance, charger installation, taxes and any applicable battery or charger cover. Subtract verified incentives and the expected resale or eligible buyback value.
How much does CRETA Electric BaaS cost per kilometre?
Hyundai announced a starting battery-usage fee of ₹3.9 per kilometre. At 12,000 km a year, that is a derived ₹46,800 before electricity and other ownership costs. Confirm the rate and contract terms for the exact variant.
Is BaaS cheaper than buying the battery?
There is no universal answer. BaaS lowers the published entry price from the traditional illustration’s ₹18.03 lakh to ₹10.99 lakh, but adds a per-kilometre fee. Compare annual kilometres, financing, insurance, incentives, resale and ownership period in separate columns.

Divide annual kilometres by real km/kWh efficiency, add a charging-loss allowance, and multiply home energy by your distribution-company tariff. Calculate public charging separately, including network, session, parking and idle fees.
Does Hyundai’s warranty mean maintenance is free?
No. Hyundai lists a three-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, while normal maintenance and wear items are excluded. Budget inspections, tyres, alignment, brakes, filters, wipers and a repair reserve. Hyundai states an eight-year or 160,000-kilometre battery warranty; read its conditions.
Can I count Hyundai’s 60% assured buyback as my resale value?
Only as a separate eligible scenario. Hyundai announced 60% through three years or 45,000 km for CRETA Electric. Time, mileage, contract and eligibility conditions apply, so also run an ordinary-market resale case.
What charger cost should be included?
For CRETA Electric HC variants, Hyundai says a 7.4 kW wall-box charger is included. Still budget compatible wiring, earthing, protection devices, cable routing, electrical-load upgrades and parking work. Verify the selected variant and apartment or home electrical capacity.
