For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, calculate each Bitcoin disposition separately: subtract the adjusted basis of the specific units you disposed of from the amount realized, with both amounts in U.S. dollars. A sale for dollars, a crypto-to-crypto exchange, or spending Bitcoin can create a gain or loss. Bitcoin received as wages, contractor pay, mining or staking rewards is generally an income event first, followed by a separate gain-or-loss calculation if those units are later sold or spent.

Bitcoin is property for federal tax purposes

The Internal Revenue Service treats digital assets, including Bitcoin, as property. General property-tax principles therefore apply to Bitcoin transactions. This guide covers U.S. federal income-tax treatment under IRS guidance available October 13, 2026. State, local and non-U.S. rules can differ.

The tax result depends on the particular units involved, not merely on the balance shown in an exchange account. You need the units’ acquisition date, adjusted basis, sale or spending date, proceeds and allocable costs before you can determine the result.

The fact that no cash reached your bank account does not by itself make a transaction tax-free. Exchanging Bitcoin for another digital asset or using it to buy goods or services is generally a disposition that requires a calculation.

The basic Bitcoin gain-or-loss formula

For each capital-asset disposition, use:

Gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis of the specific Bitcoin units disposed of

Report the arithmetic in U.S. dollars. A positive result is a gain; a negative result is a loss. The calculation is made separately for each identifiable lot or group of units disposed of.

Amount realized

For a sale, the amount realized is generally the cash you receive, reduced by digital-asset transaction costs allocable to that disposition. Costs paid to another party to effect a purchase, sale or other disposition can include transaction or gas fees, transfer taxes and commissions. For a non-cash exchange or a purchase of goods or services, use the U.S.-dollar fair market value of what you receive as the proceeds measure, then account for allocable disposition costs under the applicable IRS rules.

Adjusted basis

Basis is your tax investment in the particular units. For Bitcoin bought with dollars, the IRS legacy virtual-currency FAQ generally describes basis as the amount paid to acquire the Bitcoin plus fees, commissions and other acquisition costs, measured in U.S. dollars. Adjusted basis can change under other applicable rules, and that purchase rule should not be applied mechanically to Bitcoin received in a different way.

Illustrative arithmetic

Suppose the specific units you identify have an adjusted basis of $8,000 and you receive $10,000 after applicable disposition costs. The arithmetic gain is $2,000 ($10,000 − $8,000). These are invented inputs for explaining the formula, not an IRS example or a typical Bitcoin return.

Which Bitcoin events require a calculation?

Event What generally happens for federal tax purposes Information needed
Sell Bitcoin for U.S. dollars Capital gain or loss equals cash proceeds, adjusted for allocable disposition costs, minus the basis of the units sold. Sale date, proceeds, fees, identified units, basis and acquisition dates.
Exchange Bitcoin for another digital asset The Bitcoin is disposed of even though the proceeds are another digital asset. Use the U.S.-dollar fair market value of the asset received and subtract the identified Bitcoin units’ adjusted basis and allocable costs. Date and time, assets and quantities exchanged, U.S.-dollar values, fees and lot records.
Pay for goods or services with Bitcoin Spending Bitcoin is a disposition. Compare the value of what you receive, after applicable costs, with the basis of the units spent. Date, recipient or merchant, Bitcoin quantity, value of goods or services, fees and identified units.
Pay a transaction service with Bitcoin Using Bitcoin to pay a transfer or other transaction service can itself dispose of the units used, creating a separate gain or loss. Bitcoin amount used for the fee, its U.S.-dollar value, date and basis of those units.
Move Bitcoin between your own wallets or accounts A transfer between accounts you own should be distinguished from a sale. A mere internal transfer generally is not the same event as disposing of Bitcoin, but retain records and consider any separate reporting implications. Sending and receiving addresses or account statements, date, quantity and network fee details.
Receive Bitcoin as wages, contractor compensation, mining or staking rewards The receipt is not simply a capital-gain calculation. The source can require wage, Schedule C or other income treatment. If the units are later sold or spent, calculate a separate disposition using their applicable basis and holding period. Income value and date, source, forms or business records, later sale or spending details and lot records.

Digital-asset transactions must be reported whether they produce a gain or a loss. Do not omit a transaction merely because the price was flat or the result was negative.

How to find the adjusted basis of your Bitcoin

Bitcoin purchased with dollars

Start with the dollars paid for the units. Add acquisition fees, commissions and other costs that belong to that purchase. Keep the result tied to the specific lot, wallet or account in which the units were acquired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bitcoin received as income

Bitcoin received for wages, independent-contractor services, mining, staking or another income-producing activity has source-specific income consequences. The value recognized under the rules for that receipt becomes relevant to the units’ basis, but the correct treatment depends on the nature of the activity and the tax year. Keep the income documentation and do not substitute a simple “purchase price” formula when no purchase occurred.

Bitcoin received by gift, exchange or another event

Gifted or otherwise non-purchased Bitcoin can have transaction-specific basis and holding-period rules. Identify the event that created the holding and apply the current IRS digital-asset guidance for that type of receipt. If the history is incomplete, do not invent a basis; reconstruct the records or obtain professional advice.

Identify the units before calculating a sale

When you acquired Bitcoin in multiple lots, you must identify the units disposed of and use the basis and holding period for those units. A single exchange-account balance is not enough to establish which lot was sold.

Specific identification

Use records that connect the disposition to particular units, including acquisition date, quantity, wallet or account and basis. The identification must be made under the current IRS rules and supported by adequate records. Do not casually assume that every situation permits a universal first-in, first-out calculation.

Custodial broker instructions after 2025

For transactions after December 31, 2025, current IRS guidance permits a standing instruction to a custodial broker only when the instruction is timely, uses identifiers sufficient for the broker to identify the units’ basis and holding period, and is supported by adequate records. An instruction that cannot identify the units is not a substitute for lot-level documentation.

Wallet and account transition safe harbor

Revenue Procedure 2024-28 provides a safe harbor for allocating unused basis to units held within each wallet or account on January 1, 2025, as taxpayers transitioned to the newer basis-identification methodology. The safe harbor does not allow unused basis to be pooled freely across all wallets. Keep the allocation by wallet or account and preserve the records supporting it.

Determine whether the result is short term or long term

The IRS treats a capital gain or loss as short term when the Bitcoin was held for one year or less and long term when it was held for more than one year. The holding period begins the day after acquisition and ends on the sale or exchange date.

Use the acquisition date of the particular units identified as disposed of. If you sell units from several lots in one transaction, calculate the holding period for each identified lot; one sale can therefore contain both short-term and long-term results. The one-year threshold is a classification rule, not a statistic, and the applicable tax consequences depend on the tax year and your overall return.

A step-by-step workflow for every disposition

  1. Collect the transaction record. Record the date and time, transaction type, Bitcoin quantity, the other asset or cash received, U.S.-dollar fair market value, fees, wallet or account and counterparties or platform records.
  2. Classify the event. Mark it as a cash sale, crypto-to-crypto exchange, payment for goods or services, Bitcoin-paid fee, internal transfer or receipt of income. Do not combine income receipts with later capital dispositions.
  3. Identify the units. Link the quantity disposed of to the specific lot or lots under current IRS identification rules. For custodial holdings, retain the timely broker instruction and the records that identify basis and holding period.
  4. Establish adjusted basis. Start with the applicable basis for those units and include permitted acquisition costs. Apply any transaction-specific adjustments and keep wallet or account allocations separate where required.
  5. Compute the amount realized. Use cash received or the U.S.-dollar fair market value of property or services received. Reduce the proceeds by digital-asset transaction costs that are allocable to the disposition. Do not treat a fee paid merely to move Bitcoin between your own wallets as a disposition cost under the IRS FAQ.
  6. Calculate the result. Subtract adjusted basis from amount realized for each identified lot. Keep gains and losses tied to their transaction dates and holding periods.
  7. Classify the holding period. Apply the day-after-acquisition rule and the one-year threshold to each lot.
  8. Report and retain. Enter capital-asset dispositions on the forms required for the tax year, and retain records that substantiate every number.

How fees affect the calculation

Fees must be assigned to the transaction they actually support. A commission or network fee paid to complete a purchase can be part of the acquired units’ basis under the applicable rules. A fee paid to effect a sale or exchange can reduce the amount realized when it is allocable to that disposition.

A fee for moving Bitcoin between wallets or accounts that you own is not treated as a digital-asset transaction cost under the IRS digital-asset FAQ. That does not make the record irrelevant: document the transfer, the quantity sent, the fee and whether any part of the fee was paid in Bitcoin. If Bitcoin itself is used to pay a transfer service, the units used for that payment can be a separate disposition.

Income receipts and later sales are two different tax events

Bitcoin received for services, wages, mining or staking is not reported only as a capital gain. The IRS directs taxpayers to the reporting route that matches the source, such as wage reporting, Schedule C for qualifying business activity or another income category.

When those units are later sold, exchanged or spent, perform the capital calculation separately. Use the applicable basis established for the receipt, the units’ acquisition date for holding-period purposes and the later transaction’s amount realized. Combining the receipt and the later disposition into one line can report the wrong income type and the wrong holding period.

Where to report Bitcoin sales and exchanges

For Bitcoin held as a capital asset, the IRS directs taxpayers to report sales and other dispositions on Form 8949 and summarize the results on Schedule D. Follow the instructions for the tax year being filed. Form 8949 instructions explain how to reconcile information returns and reported basis.

Situation General reporting path
Sale, exchange or spending of Bitcoin held as a capital asset Form 8949 for the individual dispositions, with the resulting totals summarized on Schedule D.
Bitcoin received as wages Use the wage reporting treatment applicable to the employment relationship and tax year; a later sale is reported separately as a disposition.
Bitcoin received for independent-contractor services Use the applicable service-income or Schedule C treatment when the activity is a trade or business; report a later disposition separately.
Mining or staking rewards Use the income or business reporting treatment that fits the activity and facts; a later sale or spending event requires its own gain-or-loss calculation.

Forms and instructions change. Use the version for the tax year you are filing rather than copying a prior year’s line numbers or assumptions.

Records that support your return

The IRS requires records sufficient to establish the positions taken on your federal return. Maintain a transaction-level ledger rather than relying only on an annual account statement.

  • Transaction date and time, including the time zone used by the platform.
  • Asset type and quantity sent, received or spent.
  • U.S.-dollar fair market value at the time of the event and how that value was determined.
  • Original and adjusted basis for the identified units.
  • Fees, commissions, gas charges and transfer taxes, with the transaction to which each belongs.
  • Wallet address or account, platform statement and transaction or blockchain identifier where available.
  • Units identified as sold, the identification instruction and the records supporting it.
  • Sale proceeds or the value of goods, services or digital assets received.
  • Acquisition dates needed to establish short-term or long-term treatment.
  • Income documentation for Bitcoin received as wages, services, mining, staking or another source.

Keep records from every platform and wallet, including accounts that were later closed. Reconcile deposits, withdrawals and internal transfers so a transfer between your own accounts is not mistaken for a sale or counted twice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using the account’s current value as basis

Current market value is not automatically your basis. Basis comes from the identified units’ acquisition history and applicable costs or income rules.

Assuming every crypto-to-crypto trade is tax-free

An exchange of Bitcoin for another digital asset is a disposition. Calculate the U.S.-dollar proceeds and compare them with the basis of the Bitcoin units exchanged.

Reporting only cash withdrawals

Taxable dispositions can occur inside an exchange account or on-chain without a bank withdrawal. Include sales, exchanges, spending and Bitcoin-paid transaction services.

Putting mining or staking receipts on Schedule D only

Income from mining or staking is not simply a capital gain. Report the receipt under the treatment that matches the activity, then calculate a later disposition separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applying one basis method to every wallet

Identification and the Revenue Procedure 2024-28 transition safe harbor operate at the wallet or account level in relevant circumstances. Do not transfer unused basis from one wallet to another without a rule and records that permit it.

Ignoring transactions because they produced a loss

The IRS says digital-asset transactions must be reported whether they produce a taxable gain or loss. A loss still requires the same evidence of units, basis, proceeds and date.

Using outdated virtual-currency guidance for current transactions

The legacy virtual-currency FAQ generally addresses transactions completed before January 1, 2025. For transactions in 2025 and later, consult the current IRS digital-asset FAQs and the instructions for the tax year being filed.

Guessing when records are incomplete

A guessed basis can change both the amount and character of the result. Reconstruct the history from platform records, wallet data and contemporaneous documentation; if the units cannot be identified or the source of the Bitcoin is unclear, obtain advice from a qualified tax professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the calculation does—and does not—tell you

The formula determines the gain or loss for each disposition. It does not, by itself, determine your final federal tax bill. The final result also depends on whether the gain or loss is short term or long term, how losses and gains appear elsewhere on your return, your other income and deductions, and the rules for the tax year filed. State and local taxes are outside this federal guide.

For transactions completed on or after January 1, 2025, use current IRS digital-asset guidance. The IRS states in its current FAQ that “Digital assets are treated as property, and the general tax principles applicable to all property transactions also apply to transactions involving digital assets.”
