The core sizing equation is ETH quantity = risk budget ÷ (entry price − stop price). Leverage changes the margin you post, not the loss represented by that stop. Liquidation cannot be copied reliably between venues because maintenance tiers, deductions, fees, margin mode and account equity differ.
The two calculations answer different questions
Position sizing answers, “How many ETH can I hold while limiting the planned stop-loss loss to a fixed dollar amount?” Liquidation analysis answers, “At what mark price would the exchange force-close this leveraged position under its maintenance-margin rules?” A sound order plan performs both calculations before sending the order.

- Risk sizing: starts with your maximum acceptable loss and the distance from entry to the stop.
- Margin sizing: converts the resulting position notional into an approximate initial-margin requirement at the chosen leverage.
- Liquidation estimation: applies the venue’s maintenance-margin tier, deductions, fees and margin mode to find an approximate liquidation price.
Your stop should be the level that invalidates the trade idea. Liquidation is an exchange-enforced closeout and should normally be farther away than the stop. If the estimated liquidation price is close to the stop, reduce the position, use less leverage, add isolated margin or reconsider the trade.
Gather these inputs before calculating
Write down the inputs in the same units the exchange uses. A perpetual contract quoted in USDT generally uses ETH as the quantity and USDT as the price and notional currency, but contract specifications can differ.

- Risk budget (R): the dollar amount you are willing to lose if the stop executes. Decide whether this includes trading fees and expected slippage.
- Entry price (E): your planned fill price, or a conservative estimate if you will use a market order.
- Stop price (S): the planned exit price below entry for a long.
- Leverage (L): the leverage setting used to determine initial margin. It does not determine the risk-based quantity.
- Fee and slippage reserve (F): an amount set aside from the risk budget for entry and exit fees, spread, and price slippage.
- Margin mode: isolated or cross. Isolated limits the position to its assigned margin; cross uses eligible account equity.
- Venue rules: contract size, minimum order quantity, maintenance-margin rate and deduction for the notional tier, liquidation-fee treatment, and mark-price convention.
Use the venue’s current contract page or order calculator for the final values. Maintenance tiers and maximum leverage can change with position size, so a value copied from a smaller example is not a safe assumption for a larger ETH position.
Calculate ETH quantity from stop-loss risk
1. Calculate the price risk per ETH
For a long, the planned loss per ETH before costs is:
Price risk per ETH = E − S
The stop must be below entry. If entry is $3,000 and the stop is $2,900, the price risk is $100 per ETH.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Divide the risk budget by that distance
The basic quantity equation is:
Qbefore costs = R ÷ (E − S)
This determines the number of ETH whose stop-distance loss equals your risk budget. It does not yet account for fees, slippage, contract increments or minimum-order rules.
3. Reserve money for costs
If the risk budget must include costs, subtract the expected entry and exit costs before dividing, or reduce the resulting quantity by a conservative reserve. A practical expression is:
Qusable = (R − F) ÷ (E − S)
When the fee schedule or slippage is uncertain, use a smaller quantity rather than treating the unreserved amount as available risk. Include both sides of the trade: opening fees and the expected closing fee. A market order can also incur spread and slippage that are not visible in the stop-distance arithmetic.
4. Apply exchange quantity rules
Round down to the venue’s permitted ETH increment. Check the minimum order size and any contract-size conversion before submitting. Rounding up can exceed the stated risk budget; rounding down leaves a small amount of risk capacity unused but preserves the cap.

Worked ETH example
Assume a $200 risk budget, an ETH entry at $3,000, and a stop at $2,900. The price risk is $100 per ETH, so:
Q = $200 ÷ ($3,000 − $2,900) = 2 ETH
The position notional is:
N = Q × E = 2 × $3,000 = $6,000
Two ETH is the pre-cost maximum. If the $200 must cover fees and slippage, the order should be smaller than 2 ETH. For example, reserve the venue-calculated round-trip costs first and recalculate with (R − F) ÷ $100. Do not assume the final quantity is 2 ETH merely because the stop-distance arithmetic produced that figure.
This example is illustrative arithmetic, not a live ETH quote or a liquidation result. Liquidation still requires the selected venue’s current maintenance tier, fee schedule, margin mode, mark price and, for cross margin, account balance.
Convert quantity into notional and initial margin
Position notional
Notional is the position’s full contract value:
N = Q × E
In the example, 2 ETH at $3,000 produces $6,000 of notional. Notional is what generally determines the maintenance-margin tier and often affects the maximum leverage available.

Approximate initial margin
For a linear position where the venue uses the standard relationship, initial margin is approximately:
Initial margin ≈ N ÷ L
At 5x leverage, a $6,000 notional position would require approximately $1,200 of initial margin before venue-specific adjustments. At 10x, the same notional would require approximately $600. The position quantity and stop-loss risk have not changed; only the margin posted has changed.
Bybit’s published example expresses this relationship as “Initial Margin = Position Value / Leverage.” Actual contract rules, fees and any extra margin can alter the amount displayed by the trading interface.

Maintenance margin is what makes liquidation possible
Liquidation is triggered when losses reduce position margin below the required maintenance margin. Maintenance margin is not the same as initial margin and is not simply “one divided by leverage.” The venue assigns a maintenance rate, and often a deduction, based on the position’s notional tier.
Binance-style tier calculation
Binance defines maintenance margin as:
Maintenance margin = position notional × maintenance-margin rate for the tier − maintenance amount for the tier
Both the rate and deduction must come from the current tier that contains your notional. If increasing the ETH quantity moves the position into another tier, recalculate the maintenance margin with that tier’s values. An ETHUSDT example using one tier cannot be carried over to a larger or smaller position without checking the tier boundaries.
Deribit’s size-dependent standard margin
Deribit’s standard-margin model describes initial margin as IM = 1/L(N) and maintenance margin as MM = 2/3 × IM, where the available leverage L(N) varies with position size and instrument tier. Its ETHUSDT perpetual contract sheet lists size-dependent initial- and maintenance-margin components. That means the leverage implied by a small position is not necessarily available for a larger one.
Estimate an isolated-long liquidation price
In isolated mode, the position has an assigned margin rather than drawing on the entire account. A simplified long calculation solves for the price at which position equity reaches maintenance margin. Bybit publishes the following relationship:
Liquidation Price (Long) = Entry Price − [(Initial Margin − Maintenance Margin) ÷ Position Size] − (Extra Margin Added ÷ Position Size)
Use the equation as a framework, not as a universal calculator. Insert the venue’s maintenance-margin amount for the actual notional tier and include any contract-specific fee or deduction where that venue specifies it.

Isolated calculation workflow
- Calculate Q and N. Use the risk-budget equation and then multiply quantity by entry price.
- Determine initial margin. Start with N ÷ L, then use the venue’s displayed amount if contract rules or fees change it.
- Identify the maintenance tier. Look up the current rate and deduction for N. Recheck if rounding or an increase in size crosses a tier boundary.
- Calculate maintenance margin. For a tiered formula such as Binance’s, use N × rate − deduction. For another venue, use its own published expression.
- Insert extra isolated margin. If you add margin to the position, include it in the venue’s formula. Added isolated margin generally moves liquidation farther from entry, but it also increases capital committed to that trade.
- Solve for the estimated price. Treat the result as an estimate until it matches the exchange interface using the current mark price and fee assumptions.
- Compare with the stop. The liquidation estimate should not be the level at which you intend to exit. If the stop is below the estimated liquidation price, the position can be liquidated before the stop order has a chance to execute.
Cross margin requires account-level inputs
Cross margin does not have one fixed liquidation price based only on the ETH entry and quantity. The exchange continuously considers eligible account equity, unrealized profit or loss on other positions, and the maintenance requirements of all open positions.
Bybit states that the liquidation price displayed on its trading page is calculated dynamically from current account equity, maintenance-margin requirements and open positions. Therefore, a cross-margin estimate must include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Available balance assigned to cross margin.
- Unrealized PnL on the ETH position and every other position sharing the margin pool.
- Maintenance requirements for all those positions and their current notional tiers.
- Fees, funding or other deductions that the venue includes in its equity calculation.
Because any of these inputs can change, recalculate after another order fills, a position is reduced, a funding payment posts, or account equity moves. A liquidation price copied from the moment before opening another position is no longer reliable.
Mark price, not just the last traded price, matters
Exchanges use a mark price for liquidation controls to reduce the effect of isolated last-trade spikes. The liquidation trigger is reached when unrealized losses calculated under the venue’s rules push margin below maintenance. Always compare the displayed liquidation price with the current mark price shown for the contract, not only the most recent trade.
The mark-price methodology, index inputs, update frequency and treatment of fees are venue-specific. Use the selected venue’s calculator or trading panel immediately before the order. A price calculated with one exchange’s mark-price and maintenance conventions must not be presented as the liquidation price for another exchange.
Compare the three documented margin approaches
| Venue | Margin or maintenance treatment documented for ETH derivatives | What the trader must verify before opening |
|---|---|---|
| Bybit | Publishes an isolated-long liquidation relationship based on entry price, initial margin, maintenance margin, position size and extra margin. Its displayed cross-margin liquidation price is calculated dynamically from current account equity, maintenance requirements and open positions. | Current maintenance requirement, any fee or contract deduction, mark price, margin mode and account inputs used by the trading page. |
| Binance | Uses tiered maintenance margin expressed as position notional multiplied by the tier rate minus the tier maintenance amount. A different notional tier requires a fresh calculation. | The ETHUSDT notional tier, rate, maintenance amount, applicable fees and the mark-price convention shown for the contract. |
| Deribit | Its standard-margin model describes IM as 1/L(N) and MM as 2/3 × IM, with available leverage varying by position size and instrument tier. The ETHUSDT perpetual sheet lists size-dependent components. | The current size tier, available leverage, ETHUSDT contract parameters and the platform’s displayed liquidation result. |
These approaches are not interchangeable. A Binance maintenance deduction cannot be inserted into a Bybit equation, and a Deribit size-dependent leverage assumption cannot be used for a different contract.

- Define the invalidation point. Set the ETH stop price from the trade setup, not from the liquidation price.
- Set the dollar risk. Decide the maximum loss, including whether fees and slippage are inside that limit.
- Calculate price risk per ETH. Subtract the stop from the entry for a long.
- Calculate quantity. Divide the risk budget, less the cost reserve, by the price risk per ETH.
- Round down. Apply the exchange’s quantity increment, contract size and minimum-order requirement.
- Calculate notional. Multiply the rounded quantity by the planned entry.
- Check the tier. Read the current maintenance rate and deduction or size-dependent margin parameters for that notional.
- Select margin mode and leverage. Confirm whether the order is isolated or cross and whether the selected leverage is permitted for the position tier.
- Read the platform estimate. Use the venue’s liquidation calculator or order panel with the current mark price and account state.
- Stress the plan. Check what happens if the fill is worse than expected, the stop slips, the position crosses a maintenance tier, or another cross-margin position loses money.
- Submit only if the numbers remain acceptable. Recalculate after partial fills or any change to quantity, leverage, margin mode or account equity.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using leverage to choose position size
Choosing “10x” first and then spending all available margin reverses the risk process. Leverage determines the margin requirement; the stop distance and risk budget determine quantity. Calculate Q first, then select leverage that leaves a comfortable liquidation buffer.

Treating initial margin as the maximum loss
Initial margin is the amount posted to open the position. A stop-loss loss is determined by quantity and price movement, while liquidation depends on maintenance margin and equity. The $600 approximate initial margin for a $6,000 notional position at 10x is not a $600 risk limit.
Ignoring fees and slippage
The equation using only E and S measures the price move. Entry fees, exit fees, spread and stop execution slippage can push the realized loss above the stated budget. Reserve costs before rounding the quantity.
Crossing a maintenance tier without noticing
A small quantity increase can change the maintenance rate, deduction or available leverage. Re-read the tier after every size change, especially when adding to a position.

Different exchanges use different maintenance schedules, deductions, mark-price conventions and account calculations. Recalculate in the selected venue’s own interface instead of importing a number from another platform.
Relying on the last traded price
Liquidation controls use the venue’s mark-price methodology. A last-trade chart can look safely above liquidation while the relevant mark price is closer, or the reverse. Monitor the mark price shown for the contract.
Assuming cross-margin liquidation is fixed
Cross-margin liquidation changes with account equity, other positions and maintenance requirements. Recalculate whenever those inputs change; an earlier displayed price is only a snapshot.
How to make the liquidation estimate more conservative
- Use a smaller quantity: this reduces notional, initial margin and the dollar loss at the stop.
- Use less leverage: for a fixed notional, more initial margin generally places liquidation farther from entry, subject to the venue’s tier and fee rules.
- Add isolated margin deliberately: extra margin generally moves the estimated liquidation price farther away, but the added funds are exposed to that position.
- Keep a cost reserve: account for both sides of the trade and plausible slippage rather than using the entire risk budget for price distance.
- Avoid unnecessary tier jumps: a larger notional can introduce a higher maintenance requirement or lower available leverage.
- Recheck after fills: partial fills, an average-entry change or an added order can alter every downstream number.
These adjustments improve distance to liquidation but do not remove market risk. A fast ETH move can gap through a stop, and exchange rules determine how the order and liquidation process behave in that event.

Final checklist before opening the ETH long
- The entry and stop are expressed in the contract’s quote currency.
- The risk budget is a dollar amount you can accept, with fees and slippage treatment decided.
- Quantity equals risk budget divided by entry-to-stop distance, then reduced for costs and rounded down.
- Notional equals rounded quantity multiplied by entry.
- The current maintenance tier, rate and deduction have been checked for that notional.
- Leverage is a margin choice, not the source of the risk limit.
- The margin mode is intentionally isolated or cross.
- The liquidation estimate uses the selected venue’s formula, mark price and account state.
- The estimated liquidation price is comfortably beyond the planned stop.
- You know which inputs require recalculation after a fill, funding event, account change or position adjustment.
Once those checks agree, the order size is tied to a defined loss while the liquidation estimate is grounded in the venue that will actually hold the position. If the exchange’s displayed number differs from a hand calculation, treat the platform’s current contract-specific result as authoritative and investigate which maintenance, fee, mark-price or account input differs before trading.
