To calculate your household’s GST for a month, total the GST shown on your receipts and bills. Where GST is not shown, identify whether each purchase is taxable, zero-rated, exempt or outside GST, then apply the correct local rate. For a GST-inclusive price, use GST = total × rate ÷ (1 + rate); for a GST-exclusive price, use GST = pre-tax price × rate.
There is no universal household GST amount. Your country and, in Canada, your province or territory determine the rate and which goods and services are taxable. A receipt-level log is the most defensible method; multiplying all monthly spending by one headline rate is only a rough estimate.

Why your country and province matter
GST is a consumption tax, but the rate and coverage depend on the jurisdiction. Canada uses GST in some provinces and the harmonized sales tax (HST) in participating provinces. Australia, New Zealand and Singapore use national GST systems with their own exemptions and zero-rating rules. Before calculating a monthly total, record the jurisdiction that applies to each purchase, especially when you shop across borders or online.
Canada
Canada Revenue Agency guidance lists a 5% GST in non-participating provinces, a 13% HST in Ontario, a 14% HST in Nova Scotia from 1 April 2025, and a 15% HST in the other participating provinces. The applicable rate is generally determined by the place-of-supply rules for the purchase, not simply by where your bank account is located.

Australia
The Australian Government’s consumer guidance uses a 10% GST rate for taxable sales. A price excluding GST is increased by multiplying it by 1.1. When a displayed price already includes GST, the GST component is the inclusive amount divided by 11.
New Zealand
Inland Revenue states that GST is 15%. For an inclusive price, the GST component is 3/23 of the total.
Singapore
Singapore’s Ministry of Finance reports a 9% GST rate from 2024. The rate alone does not make every household expense taxable; exempt supplies must still be removed from the taxable total.

There are two practical approaches. Use receipt-level calculation when you want a reliable monthly figure. Use a blended-rate estimate only when you lack transaction detail and clearly label the result as an estimate.
| Method | Accuracy | Effort | Mixed-tax baskets | Exemptions | Auditability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Receipt-level calculation | High when each line is classified correctly | Higher because every receipt or bill is reviewed | Handles taxable, zero-rated and exempt lines separately | Can remove rent, financial services and other exempt items | Strong because every amount can be traced to evidence |
| Blended effective-rate estimate | Lower when categories and rates vary | Quick once a rate is chosen | Can misstate a basket containing different rates or statuses | Usually overstates GST if exempt spending is included | Weak unless the assumptions and spending categories are documented |
If you use a blended estimate, calculate it only on spending you believe is taxable, state the assumed rate and retain the underlying spending total. Do not present it as an exact amount.

Build a monthly GST worksheet
Create one row for each purchase, bill or other household payment. A spreadsheet is sufficient; a paper log works if every receipt can be matched to a row.
| Date | Merchant | Category | Receipt total | GST status | Rate | GST amount | Evidence or notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 October | Example supermarket | Taxable basket | 110.00 | Inclusive | 10% | 10.00 | Receipt |
| 5 October | Example landlord | Home rent | 1,500.00 | Exempt or no GST where applicable | 0% | 0.00 | Verify local rule |
Add columns for currency, province or country, and whether the amount is tax-inclusive if you shop in more than one jurisdiction. For a receipt containing several tax treatments, split it into separate rows or record each line item in a second sheet.
Record the evidence
Keep the receipt, invoice, order confirmation or bill that supports each entry. Note whether the document shows GST separately, says that prices include tax, or gives only a final total. If a receipt is missing, mark the row as an estimate and explain how you derived the amount.
Reconcile at month end
- Match the worksheet’s transactions to your bank and card statements so that cash purchases and recurring bills are not omitted or counted twice.
- Check that each row has a GST status and rate, or a note explaining why no GST applies.
- Add GST amounts for taxable purchases.
- Keep zero-rated and exempt totals in separate columns; both can have a zero GST amount but for different reasons.
- Investigate unusual items with the relevant tax authority’s category guidance.
- Save the worksheet and source documents together so the calculation can be reproduced later.
Classify every expense before applying a rate
The headline rate applies only to supplies that are taxable at that rate. Classification comes before multiplication.
Taxable supplies
A taxable purchase has GST charged at the jurisdiction’s applicable rate. If the receipt gives a GST amount, enter that amount rather than recomputing it. If the receipt gives a pre-tax price, calculate GST from that price. If it gives a tax-inclusive total, isolate the GST with the inclusive formula.

Zero-rated supplies
A zero-rated supply is taxable in the system but charged at 0%. Canada Revenue Agency describes basic groceries as zero-rated at 0% GST/HST regardless of the place of supply in Canada. Record the purchase as zero-rated rather than applying the standard provincial rate. A zero-rated total belongs in your worksheet because it explains why spending produced no GST.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Exempt supplies
An exempt supply is outside GST collection under the jurisdiction’s rules. The transaction may appear on your household statement, but multiplying it by the headline rate would overstate GST. Singapore lists residential-property rent and financial services among exempt supplies. New Zealand says rent for the home or flat a person lives in is not subject to GST, while holiday-home rent is treated differently.
Out-of-scope amounts
Some entries are not supplies on which GST is charged, such as transfers between your own accounts or other non-purchase movements. Exclude them from household spending before calculating GST. Keep a note so a large bank-statement amount is not mistaken for a taxable purchase.
Use the correct formula for the price you have
Price excludes GST
When P is the pre-tax price and r is the rate expressed as a decimal, calculate GST = P × r. The tax-inclusive amount is P × (1 + r).
For example, a taxable service priced at 200 before tax at 10% produces 200 × 0.10 = 20 GST and a 220 total.

Price includes GST
When the displayed total already includes GST, do not multiply the total by the rate. Use GST = total × r ÷ (1 + r). The pre-tax amount is total ÷ (1 + r).
At 10%, a 110 inclusive total contains 110 × 0.10 ÷ 1.10 = 10 GST. At 5%, a 105 inclusive total contains 5 GST. Round only at the final line or receipt total, following the rounding convention used on the document.
Country-specific shortcuts
- Australia: for a 10% GST-inclusive amount, divide the total by 11.
- New Zealand: for a 15% GST-inclusive amount, multiply the total by 3 and divide by 23.
These shortcuts work because the fractions are derived from the stated national rates. They do not apply in a different country or to a different rate.

Australia: taxable and exempt spending
Assume a household has three October entries: a 110 supermarket purchase that is taxable and GST-inclusive, 55 of another taxable household service shown as inclusive, and 1,500 of home rent that is not subject to GST under the applicable rule. The first purchase contains 10 GST because 110 ÷ 11 = 10. The second contains 5 GST because 55 ÷ 11 = 5. The rent contributes 0. The monthly GST total is therefore 15, not 10% of all 1,665 of spending.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNew Zealand: inclusive prices
Suppose taxable purchases total 230 including GST and the household’s home rent is recorded separately as a non-GST expense. The GST in the 230 is 230 × 3 ÷ 23 = 30. The 200 balance is the pre-tax value. Applying 15% to the 230 total would produce 34.50 and would be incorrect because the displayed amount already includes tax.

Canada: different provincial rates
A household in Ontario should use 13% HST on an Ontario taxable purchase, while a household in a non-participating province uses 5% GST where that rate applies. A Nova Scotia purchase is subject to 14% HST from 1 April 2025 under current CRA guidance. A taxable inclusive purchase of 113 in Ontario contains 13 HST; a taxable inclusive purchase of 105 at a 5% rate contains 5. Basic groceries that qualify as zero-rated contribute no GST/HST even though they are part of household spending.
Singapore: separate exempt rent
At Singapore’s 9% rate, a taxable inclusive purchase of 109 contains 9 GST because 109 × 0.09 ÷ 1.09 = 9. Residential-property rent listed as exempt should be entered with a zero GST amount and retained in the exempt-spending column rather than included in the 9% calculation.
Handle supermarket baskets and other mixed receipts
A single receipt can contain taxable goods, zero-rated groceries, exempt services or items subject to different rules. Do not apply one rate to the receipt total unless the receipt confirms that every line has the same treatment.
Recommended Free Tools
- Copy each line or subtotal into the worksheet.
- Use the receipt’s tax codes or GST subtotals where available.
- Assign the applicable status and rate to each group.
- Calculate GST for each group and add the results.
- Check that the groups’ totals reconcile to the receipt’s final amount.
If the receipt provides only one tax figure for the entire basket, record that figure directly and retain the receipt. If it provides no tax information, classify the items using official category guidance and label any uncertain line as an estimate rather than silently applying the headline rate.
Include recurring bills without double counting
Review rent, utilities, insurance, subscriptions, loan payments and annual renewals separately. A bank debit is evidence that money left the account, not proof that GST was charged. Open the underlying bill and record the tax amount or tax status shown there. For an annual bill paid in one month, decide whether your question is “GST paid in the payment month” or “GST attributable to each month.” For cash-flow tracking, record the GST in the month paid; for a monthly cost budget, spread the bill consistently and document that choice.
Common errors and how to correct them
- Using one rate for every expense: replace the blanket multiplication with receipt-level statuses and local rates.
- Multiplying an inclusive total by the rate: use
total × r ÷ (1 + r)instead. - Treating zero-rated goods as exempt without a note: keep separate columns so the reason for a zero amount is clear.
- Applying GST to home rent automatically: check the local rule; New Zealand home rent is not subject to GST, and Singapore identifies residential-property rent as exempt.
- Counting transfers or credit-card payments as purchases: reconcile to the original transaction and exclude account movements.
- Ignoring the purchase location: use the province, territory or country rules that apply to the supply.
- Rounding every line too early: retain cents in the worksheet and round the final reported total according to the receipts.
- Calling an estimate exact: state the assumptions, rate and categories used when records are incomplete.
How to report your monthly result
Report at least four figures: taxable spending, GST paid on taxable spending, zero-rated spending and exempt or out-of-scope spending. This makes the result understandable and lets you compare months without mistaking a change in rent or grocery spending for a change in GST rates.
A useful monthly note records the jurisdiction, the period covered, whether totals are cash-paid or accrued, the rates used, and any receipts that were estimated. Keep the worksheet with statements and receipts so you can revisit a disputed charge or update the calculation if a tax authority changes a rate.
When a blended estimate is acceptable
A blended estimate can help with a quick budget forecast when you have only a total spending figure. First remove categories that are clearly exempt, zero-rated or outside GST. Then apply an assumed effective rate to the remainder and label the result “estimated GST.” Do not use the estimate to replace a receipt-based figure when you need an accurate record, because mixed baskets and changing provincial or national rules can make the effective rate materially different from the headline rate.
