Your estimated net profit is the executable proceeds from selling minus the executable cost of buying, both trading fees, withdrawal or transfer charges, price impact, and any other cost required by the route. Calculate every item in one quote currency, then divide by a clearly stated capital base if you show a percentage return.
There is no universal “minimum spread.” Break-even depends on your account’s fee tier, the exact pairs and order types, trade size, order-book depth, transfer asset and network, transfer timing, and whether you already hold inventory on both venues.

Start with the route, not the headline spread
Write down exactly what you intend to do before looking for a profitable percentage. A cross-exchange spot route normally has a buy leg on one venue, a sell leg on another, and either a transfer of the purchased asset or pre-positioned balances that are rebalanced later.

- Asset and pairs: for example, BTC/USD on the buying venue and BTC/USDT on the selling venue. If the quote currencies differ, include the conversion cost and exchange-rate assumption.
- Venues and accounts: identify the exact accounts because fee tiers and withdrawal rules are account-specific.
- Trade size: state the amount of quote currency or the asset quantity you intend to execute.
- Inventory model: note whether cash and crypto are already available on both venues, or whether the purchased asset must be transferred before the sale.
- Accounting currency: convert fees, transfer charges, and proceeds to one unit such as USD, EUR, or USDT.
- Rebalancing: include a later transfer or conversion if it is part of making the strategy operational.
Only subtract costs that the chosen route actually incurs. Conversely, do not omit a cost merely because it happens after the two trades if it is necessary to restore the balances you need for the next cycle.

The complete net-profit formula
For a single spot route, use:
Net profit = executable sale proceeds − executable purchase cost − buy fee − sell fee − transfer and withdrawal costs − slippage or price-impact cost − other route costs.
“Executable” matters. The best bid and ask displayed on a ticker may represent only a small quantity. Your average fill can be worse when your order consumes multiple order-book levels or is only partly filled.
Keep percentage and fixed costs separate
Percentage trading fees usually grow with transaction value. A flat withdrawal charge does not. Separate rows for the two types make it clear why a route can be unattractive at small size yet viable at larger size, or why increasing size eventually creates more price impact.
| Line item | How to calculate it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase cost | Quantity bought × size-weighted average buy price | Order-book depth and actual fill assumptions |
| Buy fee | Fee rate for the executed buy value, or the venue’s stated fee treatment | Account tier, pair, product, and maker/taker status |
| Sale proceeds | Quantity sold × size-weighted average sell price | Available bids, partial fills, and quote changes |
| Sell fee | Fee rate for the executed sell value | Same checks as the buy leg; do not assume both legs have identical rates |
| Transfer cost | Withdrawal charge plus separately billed network or deposit charges, where applicable | Asset, network, venue, minimums, and whether a network cost is already embedded |
| Price impact | Difference between a reference quote and the expected size-weighted execution price | Depth at your intended size and the probability of incomplete fills |
| Other route costs | Conversion, funding, borrowing, or rebalancing expense when applicable | Whether the expense is actually required by this route |
Step 1: Estimate executable prices from the order book
Do not calculate from a single displayed bid and ask unless your entire order can realistically fill at those prices. For a buy, walk through the asks until the intended quantity is covered. For a sell, walk through the bids. Compute the weighted average price:
Average fill price = total value of all expected fills ÷ total quantity expected to fill.
Illustrative depth calculation
Suppose a buy requires 1.5 ETH. The first ask offers 1 ETH at $2,000 and the next offers 0.5 ETH at $2,010. The expected purchase value is (1 × $2,000) + (0.5 × $2,010) = $3,005, so the average buy price is $2,003.33, not the displayed $2,000. A sell of the same 1.5 ETH must be calculated from the available bids in the same way.
Books can change between observation and submission. An order can fill only partially, leaving you with unhedged inventory or a smaller position than planned. Treat the result as an estimate based on a snapshot, not a guaranteed execution.
Market, limit, and post-only behavior
- A market order seeks immediate execution and normally receives taker treatment.
- A limit order is not automatically a maker order. If it matches immediately, it can be charged as taker; Kraken’s support guidance explicitly describes this possibility.
- A post-only instruction can prevent immediate matching, but the venue may cancel the order instead of filling it if it would take liquidity.
- A partially matched order can have different fee treatment for different portions. Coinbase Advanced explains that the immediately matched portion is charged as taker while a resting remainder receives maker treatment.
Use the order preview and the venue’s current fee schedule for the exact pair and account. A generic fee percentage copied from an old example can materially change the result.
Step 2: Apply both trading fees correctly
Calculate the fee on each executed leg. If the venue charges a percentage of quote value, multiply that rate by the executed value of that leg. If it charges in the base asset, quote currency, or a discounted fee token, convert the resulting amount to your accounting currency at the same valuation time.

Fee rates vary by product, 30-day volume tier, pair, region, and whether the order provides or takes liquidity. Coinbase’s published explanation says rates vary by product, fee tier, and maker/taker status, and that the fee tier at order time determines the charge. Check the fee shown in the order preview rather than relying on a remembered schedule.
Example of asymmetric fees
If a $2,000 buy is charged 0.40% and the corresponding sale is charged 0.60%, the fees are $8 and $12 respectively, for $20 total. Treating both legs as 0.40% would overstate profit by $4. If one order is partly maker and partly taker, split the calculation by fill portion.
Step 3: Add withdrawal, network, and transfer costs
Transfer costs depend on the asset, network, venue, and current withdrawal policy. Record the exact route, such as “asset X over network Y from venue A to venue B,” rather than using a vague cryptocurrency withdrawal percentage.
- Include the venue’s withdrawal charge.
- Add a separately charged network or deposit fee only when it is not already included in that withdrawal charge.
- Check minimum withdrawal amounts, confirmation requirements, maintenance status, and whether deposits are credited immediately or after additional confirmations.
- If you transfer a different asset and convert it on arrival, include both conversion spread and trading fee.
- If you keep inventory pre-positioned and later rebalance it, include the cost of that rebalance in the strategy’s economics.
Avoid double-counting. A platform may quote one withdrawal amount that already covers its network expense; adding a second “network fee” without evidence makes the estimate too pessimistic.
Step 4: Quantify slippage and incomplete fills
Slippage is the difference between the reference price you saw and the price you actually obtain. For a size-aware estimate, compare the top-of-book quote with the weighted average price through the depth needed for your order.
You can express the cost as:
Price-impact cost = (reference price − expected average sale price) × quantity for a sale, or (expected average buy price − reference price) × quantity for a purchase. Use the sign that makes a worse execution a positive cost.
Do not silently add an arbitrary flat allowance such as 0.50% when the order book provides better information. If depth is thin, model several outcomes: full execution at the estimated average, partial execution, and a delayed hedge after the quote moves. A limit order may reduce the worst acceptable price but can leave the arbitrage incomplete.
Step 5: Account for timing risk
A transfer-based route is exposed while the asset moves between venues. The spread can narrow or disappear before the deposit is credited, and the receiving bid can move against you. Academic work on cross-exchange trading identifies transfer delays, fees, and limited order-book depth as structural frictions rather than unusual edge cases.
Pre-positioned balances can reduce transfer delay during execution, but they do not make the strategy costless: inventory must eventually be rebalanced, and capital is tied up on multiple venues. Model the route you will actually use, including the timing of confirmations and any venue processing delay.

For every estimate, record a timestamp and the assumptions used. A positive number means only that the modeled fills and costs produce a positive result at that moment; it is not a risk-free or guaranteed return.
A worked hypothetical example
Consider a $2,000 position with a 1.20% executable price gap. The gross difference is $24. Assume the buy and sell legs together cost $4 in trading fees, the selected withdrawal costs $5, and estimated execution impact costs $3.
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross executable difference | $24 |
| Trading fees on both legs | −$4 |
| Withdrawal cost | −$5 |
| Estimated slippage/impact | −$3 |
| Estimated net profit | $12 |
| Net return on stated $2,000 capital | 0.60% |
This is arithmetic with assumed inputs, not a typical outcome or forecast. A further $12 adverse move would erase the modeled margin. Any change in fee tier, fill price, transfer charge, or timing changes the result.
Calculate break-even instead of guessing a minimum spread
Break-even occurs when the net-profit expression equals zero. Holding the trade size, fees, transfer route, and execution assumptions fixed, solve for the required sale proceeds:
Required sale proceeds = purchase cost + buy fee + sell fee + transfer costs + price-impact cost + other route costs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo convert that requirement into a break-even sale price, divide required sale proceeds by the quantity expected to sell. Compare the resulting price with the executable buy price. If the buy and sell quote currencies differ, perform the conversion before comparing them.
Why the answer changes with size
- A flat withdrawal charge is a larger percentage of a $200 trade than of a $20,000 trade.
- Larger orders consume more book depth and can create greater price impact.
- Trading fees may change when your account crosses a volume tier.
- Minimum withdrawals and minimum order sizes can make a small theoretical spread unusable.
- More capital may require splitting orders, increasing the chance that prices move between fills.
Therefore, a claim such as “you need a 1% spread” is incomplete unless it specifies the route, account, size, order types, transfer method, and execution assumptions.
Build a spreadsheet that exposes every assumption
Use one row per cost or proceeds item rather than entering a single “fees” percentage. A practical layout is:
- Enter the accounting currency and calculation timestamp.
- Enter intended quantity, quote-currency capital, and whether balances are pre-positioned.
- List each buy-side order-book level used and calculate the weighted average buy price.
- Calculate gross purchase value and apply the actual buy fee by fill portion.
- List each sell-side order-book level and calculate the weighted average sell price.
- Calculate gross sale proceeds and apply the actual sell fee by fill portion.
- Enter withdrawal, deposit, and network charges separately, marking any charge already embedded in another line.
- Enter conversion, funding, borrowing, and rebalancing costs only when the route uses them.
- Calculate net profit with the full formula.
- Calculate net return as net profit divided by a stated denominator, such as initial quote capital committed or total capital allocated to the route.
- Run sensitivity cases for worse fills, a delayed transfer, a higher fee tier, and a smaller completed quantity.
Keep the denominator consistent. Dividing by the buy amount in one scenario and total capital across two pre-funded venues in another makes return percentages incomparable.

Compare two arbitrage routes on equal terms
When choosing between routes, hold trade size and accounting currency constant. Compare the following fields:
| Comparison field | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Trading fees | What are the current account-specific buy and sell rates? Are fills maker, taker, or mixed? |
| Executable prices | What weighted average prices are available for the intended size? |
| Fill risk | Could either order be partially filled or cancelled? |
| Transfer route | Which asset and network will move, at what charge and expected delay? |
| Other costs | Are conversion, funding, borrowing, or rebalancing expenses required? |
| Outcome | What are estimated net profit and net return under identical assumptions? |
The route with the larger visible spread is not necessarily better. A narrower spread with deeper liquidity and a cheaper, faster transfer can produce the higher estimated net result.

What to verify immediately before using the number
Fee schedules, withdrawal charges, network availability, deposit status, and order-book liquidity are volatile. Re-check the exact venue, pair, account tier, asset, network, and order preview immediately before submitting an order. The calculation is useful because it makes assumptions visible; it cannot remove execution, transfer, or market risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate crypto arbitrage fees?
Calculate the executed fee on the buy leg and the executed fee on the sell leg using the current account, pair, product, and maker/taker treatment. Add transfer and other route costs separately, avoiding duplicate network charges.
How is crypto arbitrage profit calculated?
Subtract executable purchase cost, both trading fees, transfer costs, slippage or price impact, and any applicable conversion, funding, borrowing, or rebalancing costs from executable sale proceeds. Divide the result by a stated capital base only when presenting a return percentage.
What is a safe minimum spread for arbitrage?
There is no universal safe minimum. Break-even changes with trade size, fee tier, order-book depth, order type, transfer asset and network, timing, and other route costs.
