Cardano’s ADA is treated as a virtual digital asset (VDA) under India’s VDA rules. For each disposal, calculate the taxable amount as the INR consideration received minus the documented acquisition cost. The resulting positive income is taxed at the statutory VDA rate of 30% plus applicable surcharge and cess. Separately, Section 194S may require the payer to withhold 1% of the consideration as TDS; that withholding is a credit, not an additional tax on top of the final assessment.
What an ADA transaction means for Indian tax
India’s official Schedule VDA describes a VDA as covering crypto assets. ADA therefore falls within the VDA regime; there is no separate Cardano-specific rate published by the Income Tax Department. This classification is an application of the statutory definition to ADA, rather than a special exemption or a distinct “coin tax.”

The Income Tax Department’s Schedule VDA guidance (page accessed 16 October 2026) states that income from a VDA transfer is computed without deduction of any expenditure or allowance other than the cost of acquisition, and without set-off of any loss. The income so computed is taxable at 30% plus surcharge and cess. That rule governs the final income-tax calculation, while Section 194S governs withholding when its conditions are met.
The calculation in one line
Use a separate calculation for every ADA transfer:
VDA income for the transfer = INR consideration − documented cost of acquisition
#1 Best Overall
- If the result is positive, enter that amount as income in Schedule VDA.
- If the result is negative, the transaction is reported as nil for VDA income. The loss cannot be used to set off another VDA gain under the cited rule.
- Only the acquisition cost is allowed in this calculation. Trading fees, network fees, advisory charges, software costs and other expenses are not additional deductions under the Schedule VDA rule.
“Consideration” is the value received for the transfer, expressed in Indian rupees for the tax records. Preserve the valuation evidence used on the transfer date; an exchange statement or another contemporaneous record should show how the INR amount was determined.
Worked example: selling ADA for INR
Assume an Indian resident sells ADA and receives ₹100,000. The records establish an acquisition cost of ₹60,000 for the units transferred.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| INR consideration | ₹100,000 |
| Documented acquisition cost | ₹60,000 |
| VDA income | ₹40,000 |
| Base VDA tax (30% of ₹40,000) | ₹12,000 |
| Surcharge and cess | Apply as required to the taxpayer’s circumstances; not included in this illustration |
This is an illustration of the statutory formula, not a tax assessment. The final amount depends on the surcharge and cess applicable to the taxpayer. A TDS amount withheld on the sale is dealt with separately and can be reconciled as a withholding credit.
What counts as acquisition cost
Use the cost actually attributable to the ADA units transferred and support it with records. When a sale draws from more than one acquisition lot, retain the lot-level quantities and dates and document the allocation used. The Schedule VDA format is transaction-wise, so a single annual profit figure without the underlying lots is not sufficient evidence.

Do not add other expenditure to the cost merely because it reduced the cash received. The statutory wording permits the cost of acquisition and excludes other expenditure or allowance. Keep fees in your working papers so that the consideration and cash settlement can be reconciled, but do not treat them as a second deduction in the VDA income formula.
How the 1% TDS works
Section 194S requires withholding of 1% of the consideration paid to a resident when the section applies. The withholding is made at the earlier of payment or credit. It is calculated on the net consideration after excluding GST and charges levied by the deductor.
The annual threshold is tested by payer category and by aggregate consideration:

| Specified person | Above ₹50,000 | 1% of the relevant net consideration |
| Any other payer | Above ₹10,000 | 1% of the relevant net consideration |
The statute and Income Tax Department guidance describe these as “above” thresholds. Confirm the payer’s category and the cumulative consideration for the financial year before deciding whether the withholding trigger has been crossed. The threshold is based on consideration, not on your gain or loss.

Why TDS is not the final ADA tax
TDS is a collection mechanism. It is withheld from the settlement and reported to the tax authorities, while the final VDA liability is calculated from the gain formula and taxed at the statutory VDA rate plus surcharge and cess. A sale can therefore have 1% withheld even though its final gain is smaller, or even though the transaction produces no positive VDA income. Keep the withholding evidence and reconcile it when filing the return rather than subtracting the 1% from the acquisition cost.
Who must deduct TDS in different sale routes
The payment flow determines who is responsible for withholding. Get the responsibility in writing when an intermediary is involved.
| Disposal route | Who normally deducts | Consideration and withholding form | Records to obtain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange pays the seller directly | The exchange, when Section 194S applies | Usually an INR settlement; exchange procedures may also use in-kind withholding for exchange trades | Trade history, settlement statement and TDS credit or certificate details. The exact product workflow is not fixed by the statutory page. |
| Over-the-counter sale | The buyer | INR or another agreed form of consideration; the buyer must calculate the statutory net amount | Signed trade terms, wallet transaction ID, INR valuation evidence and the buyer’s withholding record |
| Broker-arranged transaction | The broker may deduct if responsibility is placed on it under a written agreement; otherwise the statutory payer remains responsible | Follow the written agreement and the actual payment flow | Agreement, broker statement, payer identity, settlement evidence and TDS certificate or statement |
| Payment to a non-resident | Resident-payee condition for Section 194S is not met on the facts supplied | Do not assume the resident withholding rule applies | Establish tax residency and obtain case-specific advice before settlement |
Exchange support, available products and in-kind procedures can change. The exchange’s current tax documentation and the contract governing an OTC or broker transaction should control the operational steps.
Step-by-step: calculate the amount for a sale
- Identify the transfer. Record the date, the quantity of ADA moved and the wallet or exchange transaction ID.
- Determine INR consideration. Use the amount credited or the documented INR value agreed for the transfer. Preserve the price source and timestamp used.
- Match acquisition lots. Link the ADA units transferred to purchase records showing acquisition date, quantity and cost. If several lots are used, retain the allocation worksheet.
- Compute VDA income. Subtract only the documented acquisition cost from the INR consideration.
- Classify the result. Enter a positive result as VDA income; enter nil for a loss transaction. Do not use that loss to reduce another VDA gain.
- Test the TDS threshold. Add the consideration paid by the same payer during the financial year and apply the ₹50,000 or ₹10,000 threshold that matches the payer category.
- Calculate withholding. If the Section 194S trigger is met, apply 1% to the net consideration after excluding GST and charges levied by the deductor.
- Check timing. The payer deducts at payment or credit, whichever occurs first. Reconcile the amount withheld with the settlement statement.
- File the transaction details. Carry the acquisition date, transfer date, cost and consideration into Schedule VDA and retain the supporting documents.
Examples that prevent common TDS mistakes
Several small sales by one payer
Do not test each trade in isolation. If the same payer’s consideration accumulates above the applicable annual threshold, the threshold test is met for that payer category. Build a running total by payer and financial year, not merely by wallet or exchange account.

A loss-making sale
Suppose the documented acquisition cost exceeds the INR consideration. The VDA income for that transaction is nil under the cited rule. If the payer’s annual consideration threshold is met, withholding can still arise because TDS is linked to consideration, not to the existence of a gain.
Charges shown on a settlement statement
Separate GST or charges levied by the deductor, which are excluded when determining net consideration for TDS, from the acquisition-cost rule used for final VDA income. The exclusion for TDS does not turn every fee into a deductible cost for Schedule VDA.
Depositing TDS and obtaining proof
For a specified person making a cash transaction covered by Section 194S, the Income Tax Department describes Form 26QE as the challan-cum-statement. The deposit and statement are due within 30 days from the end of the month in which the deduction was made. The deductor then provides Form 16E to the payee.

Other deductors follow the applicable quarterly TDS-statement process rather than the specified-person Form 26QE route. Ask the payer which category it is using and retain the filing acknowledgement or certificate. If an exchange or broker performs an in-kind withholding procedure, obtain an equivalent transaction-level record showing the ADA quantity withheld, the valuation used and the date.

Reporting ADA in the income-tax return
Schedule VDA requires transaction-wise reporting. Prepare a ledger with at least these fields:
- Acquisition date and transfer date
- ADA quantity transferred
- Acquisition cost attributable to that quantity
- INR consideration
- Computed VDA income or nil result
- Payer identity and TDS amount, where applicable
- Exchange, wallet and transaction identifiers
The Schedule VDA schedule is used with ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-5, ITR-6 and ITR-7. The correct return depends on the taxpayer’s broader status and income profile, so select the applicable form rather than assuming every ADA holder uses the same ITR.
Use the TDS certificate and payer statement to reconcile the withholding credit. If the credit does not appear as expected, contact the deductor promptly and keep the original settlement evidence; do not alter the VDA gain calculation merely to force the figures to match.
A practical recordkeeping system
Collect source records before filing
- Exchange CSV or PDF statements showing fills, deposits, withdrawals and settlements
- Wallet addresses and blockchain transaction IDs for every ADA movement
- INR prices, timestamps and the method used to value non-INR consideration
- Purchase invoices, bank entries and acquisition-lot details
- Fee and GST lines, kept separately from acquisition cost
- Form 16E, Form 26QE references or other payer-issued TDS evidence
- Written OTC or broker agreements identifying who pays and who withholds
Reconcile three totals
- Match ADA quantities in the exchange history to on-chain wallet movements.
- Match each transfer’s INR consideration to the settlement or bank record.
- Match the TDS withheld to the payer’s certificate or statement and to the amount claimed as credit.
Keep the ledger and source files together for each financial year. Transaction-level documentation is particularly important when one sale uses multiple acquisition lots or when an intermediary withholds ADA instead of rupees.
Situations the published guidance does not fully resolve
The official material identified here does not settle every valuation and reporting question for staking rewards, gifts, airdrops or DeFi receipts. Those receipts can involve acquisition-date, income-recognition and valuation issues that are different from a straightforward purchase followed by a sale. Obtain advice from a qualified Indian tax professional for those fact patterns and preserve the protocol records, wallet history and valuation evidence needed for that review.
Quick Recap
Errors to avoid
- Using a generic “crypto tax” rate. Apply the VDA rule to ADA; do not substitute a capital-gains slab or a Cardano-specific rate.
- Deducting every trading expense. The cited rule allows only acquisition cost in the VDA income computation.
- Calculating TDS on profit. Section 194S withholding is based on qualifying consideration, not the gain after cost.
- Ignoring the payer category. The annual threshold differs for a specified person and another payer.
- Assuming the exchange always withholds. In an OTC deal the buyer normally deducts; a broker’s responsibility depends on the written arrangement and payment flow.
- Reporting an annual net figure only. Schedule VDA calls for transaction-wise acquisition and transfer information.
- Treating TDS as extra final tax. Preserve it as a withholding credit and calculate final VDA income independently.
- Assuming non-resident payments follow the same rule. Section 194S guidance cited here is framed around consideration paid to a resident; establish status before relying on it.
Decision checklist before submitting your return
- Have you listed every ADA transfer in the financial year, including transfers settled through different venues?
- Can you show the acquisition lot, date, quantity and cost for each unit sold?
- Is each consideration amount supported by an INR settlement or valuation record?
- Did you calculate VDA income using only consideration minus acquisition cost?
- Did you classify loss transactions as nil instead of offsetting them against gains?
- Did you aggregate consideration by payer and apply the correct ₹50,000 or ₹10,000 threshold?
- Does the TDS amount equal 1% of net consideration after the permitted GST and deductor-charge exclusion?
- Do you know whether the exchange, buyer or broker was responsible for withholding?
- Do you have Form 26QE/Form 16E evidence where the specified-person cash process was used, or the applicable quarterly-statement evidence for another deductor?
- Are the acquisition date, transfer date, cost and consideration entered transaction by transaction in Schedule VDA attached to the correct ITR?
