To estimate a Bitcoin miner’s operating profit, calculate the Bitcoin earned from its share of network work, convert that amount to dollars at an explicitly dated BTC price, then subtract electricity, pool fees and other recurring costs. The core daily equations are:
BTC_day = (H × 10^12 × 86,400 × u ÷ (D × 2^32)) × (S + F)
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Revenue_day = BTC_day × P_btc
Power_cost_day = (W ÷ 1,000) × h × r
Net_operating_profit_day = Revenue_day − Power_cost_day − Pool_fee_day − other_recurring_costs
Here, H is sustained hashrate in TH/s, D is network difficulty, u is uptime, S is the block subsidy in BTC, F is average transaction fees per block, P_btc is the BTC/USD price, W is wall power in watts, h is operating hours per day, and r is the marginal electricity rate in USD/kWh. A calculator result is a scenario, not guaranteed income, because difficulty, price, fees, uptime and tariffs change.

The calculation in one view
Bitcoin mining revenue is proportional to your machine’s hashrate and the time it runs, and inversely related to the Bitcoin network’s difficulty. The reward available for each block combines the subsidy with transaction fees. Once expected BTC per day is converted to dollars, operating profit is what remains after energy, pool charges and other recurring expenses.
| Symbol | Meaning | Use this value |
|---|---|---|
H |
Miner hashrate | Sustained TH/s, rather than a short-term marketing maximum |
D |
Network difficulty | The difficulty for the same timestamp as your scenario |
u |
Uptime fraction | For example, 0.95 for 95% availability |
S |
Block subsidy | BTC paid by the protocol per block; 3.125 BTC is the subsidy used in the cited post-April-2024-halving calculator methodology |
F |
Transaction fees per block | An average BTC-per-block assumption for the scenario |
P_btc |
Bitcoin price | USD/BTC with a timestamp or clearly labeled scenario |
W |
Wall power | Measured watts at the outlet when possible |
h |
Operating hours | Usually 24, reduced for planned downtime or curtailment |
r |
Electricity rate | Marginal USD/kWh actually added by the miner |
f_pool |
Pool-fee fraction | For example, 0.02 for a 2% fee |
The expected-hash formulation is used in the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance methodology and Bitcoin mining calculators: hashrate multiplied by seconds operated, divided by difficulty and 2^32, then multiplied by the subsidy-plus-fees reward. It estimates expected value over time; it does not predict the exact blocks or payouts an individual machine will receive.
Step 1: Record the miner’s real hashrate and power
Use sustained hashrate
Enter the hashrate the machine can maintain after temperature, fan behavior, rejected shares and throttling are considered. If a specification gives several operating modes, use the mode you will actually run. A brief peak reading can overstate revenue while leaving the power bill unchanged.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Measure wall power
Wall power is the electricity drawn at the outlet, including the miner’s fans and power-supply losses. Nameplate wattage is a starting point, but a suitable watt meter gives a better operating estimate. Measure after the machine has reached its normal temperature, and record whether the reading includes a separate controller, networking gear or ventilation.
Calculate efficiency for comparisons
Energy efficiency is commonly expressed in joules per terahash:
J_per_TH = watts ÷ TH_per_second
For example, a 1,000-watt device producing 10 TH/s has an efficiency of 100 J/TH, the example stated in the Cambridge methodology. Lower J/TH means less energy for the same hashing work, but it does not by itself make a purchase profitable: acquisition cost, reliability, uptime and the electricity tariff still matter.
Step 2: Gather network and market inputs
Difficulty and network hashrate
Difficulty determines how much aggregate work is required to find a block. Refresh it whenever you run a new scenario; using an old value can materially misstate expected BTC. Network hashrate is useful as a reasonableness check, but difficulty is the direct input in the expected-hash equation.
Subsidy and transaction fees
Use both parts of the block reward. The subsidy is protocol-defined and changes at halvings; the calculator methodology cited for this assignment uses 3.125 BTC since the April 2024 halving. Transaction fees vary with demand, so choose an average and label the period it represents. A subsidy-only calculation is conservative because it omits fees, but it is not a complete reward model.

Bitcoin price
Record the BTC/USD price and the time it was observed. For a decision, run at least bear, base and bull prices rather than treating one quote as a forecast. A price change affects dollar revenue immediately even if the machine’s BTC production is unchanged.
Step 3: Compute expected Bitcoin per day
Convert TH/s to hashes per second by multiplying by 10^12. Then apply:
BTC_day = (H × 10^12 × 86,400 × u ÷ (D × 2^32)) × (S + F)
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Multiply hashrate by
10^12to express it in hashes per second. - Multiply by 86,400 seconds per day and your uptime fraction.
- Divide by network difficulty multiplied by
2^32. - Multiply by the total BTC reward per block, subsidy plus average fees.
The result is an expected average. A small miner can produce no block-derived payout for a long period if operating solo, even though the mathematical expectation remains the same. Pool accounting changes the timing and variance of payments, not the underlying share of network work.
Step 4: Convert BTC production into gross revenue
Use:
Revenue_day = BTC_day × P_btc
Keep the BTC quantity and price in separate spreadsheet cells. This lets you change the price scenario without accidentally changing the network assumptions. If you display a monthly figure, multiply the daily result by 30 only as a rough scenario and state that difficulty, fees, uptime and price will move during the month.
Step 5: Calculate the electricity bill correctly
The daily energy equation is:
Power_cost_day = (W ÷ 1,000) × h × r
Divide watts by 1,000 to obtain kilowatts, multiply by operating hours, then multiply by the marginal price per kWh. Use the incremental tariff caused by the miner, not an average household rate that includes usage you would pay anyway.
Worked electricity example
For a 100 TH/s miner drawing 3,000 W continuously at $0.08/kWh:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute(3,000 ÷ 1,000) × 24 × $0.08 = $5.76 per day
That $5.76 is energy only. It does not include a pool fee, hosting, cooling, repairs, demand charges or the hardware purchase.

Tariffs that need an adjustment
- Time-of-use pricing: split the day into billing periods and calculate each period separately.
- Demand charges: add the incremental monthly charge caused by the miner, allocated to the period you are analyzing.
- Hosting: use the host’s all-in recurring charge if it replaces your own utility bill; do not also subtract the same electricity a second time.
- Taxes and surcharges: include per-kWh charges that actually apply to the additional consumption.
- Curtailment: reduce
horufor hours when the operator shuts down during expensive or restricted periods.
Step 6: Subtract pool fees and recurring operating costs
For a pool fee stated as a fraction of revenue:
Pool_fee_day = Revenue_day × f_pool
Then calculate:
Net_operating_profit_day = Revenue_day − Power_cost_day − Pool_fee_day − other_recurring_costs
Other recurring costs can include hosting, cooling, maintenance contracts, replacement fans, connectivity, payment charges and insurance. Keep each item in its own row so you can see which assumption drives the result. Taxes, financing and depreciation are separate financial questions; include them in a broader cash-flow or tax model rather than hiding them inside the electricity line.
Complete worked example with reproducible assumptions
Assume a machine rated at 100 TH/s and 3,000 W, 24-hour operation, a $0.08/kWh marginal tariff, a pool fee of f_pool, and scenario values for current difficulty D, subsidy S, fees F and BTC price P_btc. These are illustrative inputs, not a current market quote.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Calculate production with
(100 × 10^12 × 86,400 × 1.00 ÷ (D × 2^32)) × (S + F). - Calculate gross revenue by multiplying that BTC/day result by
P_btc. - Enter electricity as $5.76 per day from the wattage and tariff calculation.
- Calculate the pool charge as gross revenue multiplied by
f_pool. - Subtract $5.76, the pool charge and every other recurring daily cost from gross revenue.
- For a rough 30-day view, multiply each daily line by 30 and label the output a scenario, not guaranteed income.
A spreadsheet implementation should show the assumptions beside the outputs. For example, changing difficulty in one cell should update BTC/day, revenue, pool fees, net profit and the break-even rate without changing the machine’s wattage.
Find the break-even electricity rate
Solve the net-profit equation for the tariff:
r_break_even = (Revenue_day − Pool_fee_day − other_recurring_costs) ÷ ((W ÷ 1,000) × h)
This is the highest electricity price that produces zero operating profit under the selected difficulty, reward, price, uptime and fee assumptions. If your actual marginal rate is below the result, the scenario has a positive operating margin before hardware amortization. If it is above the result, the machine loses money from operations before considering its purchase price.
Do not treat a break-even rate as universal. A different ASIC, network difficulty, BTC price, uptime or fee assumption produces a different threshold. Recalculate it whenever a major input changes.
Pool mining versus solo mining
In a pool, the operator tracks valid shares submitted by miners and pays participants roughly in proportion to contributed hashing power, subject to the pool’s payout rules and fee. This smooths cash flow and reduces the waiting-time variance for a small operator.

Solo mining pays only when your own miner finds a valid block. The long-run expected value can be comparable, but the payout distribution is extremely uneven: a small operation may wait a very long time with no payout. Compare pool and solo on variance and liquidity, not just on a single expected-value number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate operating profit from payback and ROI
Hardware purchase cost does not belong in the daily electricity calculation. First determine net operating profit. Then add capital items such as the miner, shipping, setup, electrical work, racks, cooling equipment and expected repairs.
Simple payback
A basic payback estimate is:
Payback_days = Total_initial_cost ÷ Net_operating_profit_day
Use this only when net operating profit is positive. A negative daily result has no meaningful payback period. For a more realistic model, let difficulty, BTC price, fees, uptime, repairs and resale value vary by month rather than holding today’s inputs constant.
Why the most efficient machine may not win
Compare machines on several axes:
| Axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Net dollars per day | What remains after energy, pool and recurring costs under the same scenario? |
| J/TH | How much energy is required for each unit of hashing? |
| Break-even rate | How high can the marginal electricity price rise before operating losses begin? |
| Purchase price and payback | Does the efficiency advantage justify the price premium? |
| Uptime and serviceability | How often can the machine run, and how costly are repairs or downtime? |
| Electrical and physical requirements | Can the circuit, power supply, ventilation and noise constraints support it? |
A newer, efficient machine can still be the poorer investment if its price premium is large, delivery is delayed or uptime is worse. Conversely, a cheaper machine with high J/TH may become uneconomic at a modest tariff.
Build bear, base and bull scenarios
Volatility is best handled by changing one assumption at a time and then combining realistic cases. At minimum, create:
- Bear: lower BTC price, higher difficulty, lower fee revenue, conservative uptime and the higher applicable tariff.
- Base: your central assumptions, each dated and documented.
- Bull: higher BTC price, favorable fee revenue and a lower difficulty or tariff assumption, while keeping uptime technically achievable.
Also test a sensitivity table for the electricity rate. Hold the machine and network assumptions constant, calculate net profit at several tariffs, and identify where the result crosses zero. Then repeat with a higher difficulty or lower BTC price. This shows whether the project depends on one fragile assumption.

Common calculation errors and fixes
Using a household average rate
Problem: an average bill rate hides the incremental kWh price, demand charge or tier triggered by the miner.
Fix: use the marginal tariff and add incremental fixed or demand charges.

Mixing watts, kilowatts and joules
Problem: multiplying watts directly by a kWh price overstates energy by a factor of 1,000.
Fix: divide watts by 1,000 before multiplying by hours and USD/kWh.
Using a marketing hashrate with measured power from another mode
Problem: revenue and energy assumptions describe different operating states.
Fix: pair the sustained hashrate and wall draw from the same mode and temperature.
Ignoring transaction fees or treating them as fixed
Problem: subsidy-only output understates some periods, while an unusually high fee sample overstates others.
Fix: include a clearly dated average fee assumption and run a sensitivity case.
