How to Calculate and Compare Mutual Fund SIP Returns With Rolling Returns

The reliable way to calculate your own mutual-fund SIP return is to use every instalment as a dated cash flow and calculate an XIRR against the portfolio value on one specified date. A fund’s published return or rolling return answers a different question: how the scheme’s NAV changed over fixed historical periods. To compare funds fairly, keep the period, contribution schedule, NAV convention, plan, option, benchmark and treatment of costs identical, then report a distribution of results rather than one attractive number.

This distinction explains why your SIP XIRR can differ substantially from a fund’s trailing CAGR. Your money entered on many different dates, while a fund return generally measures a single start value against a single end value. The method below shows how to calculate both measures, build rolling SIP XIRR windows, and interpret the results without treating historical performance as a forecast.

What a SIP return actually measures

AMFI defines a systematic investment plan as investing a fixed amount at fixed intervals, with units issued at the prevailing net asset value (NAV). Your personal return therefore depends on the amount, date and NAV of every instalment, plus what those units are worth at the measurement date. It is a money-weighted result for your cash-flow history.

A scheme-level return normally describes the change in the fund’s NAV over a selected period. A point-to-point annualized return starts with the value at one date and ends with the value at another. A rolling fund return repeats that same calculation over many equal-length windows. It does not assume that an investor made monthly contributions.

Neither measure is universally “the” return. Use SIP XIRR to answer, “What annualized rate did my dated investment earn?” Use a fund’s rolling return to answer, “How consistently did this scheme perform over comparable historical periods?”

Information you need before calculating

  • Transaction dates and amounts: obtain the dates on which each instalment was actually allotted or recorded, not merely the dates on which a bank mandate was scheduled.
  • Units and NAV records: keep the statement showing units received, applicable NAV and transaction date for each purchase.
  • One valuation date: choose a date and use the portfolio value on that date. For a redeemed investment, use the actual proceeds after any applicable exit load.
  • Plan and option: identify direct or regular plan and growth or distribution option. State whether distributions were reinvested.
  • Cash-flow events: include withdrawals, switches, distributions, missed instalments, additional purchases and step-ups at their actual dates and amounts.
  • Cost and tax treatment: decide whether loads, taxes and transaction costs are included. Disclose the choice instead of mixing net and gross figures.

Keep the source records with the calculation. A result cannot be reproduced if the valuation date, NAV date or treatment of a missed payment is unclear.

Step-by-step: calculate your personal SIP return with XIRR

1. Record each contribution as a cash outflow

From the investor’s perspective, each instalment is money leaving the bank account, so enter it as a negative number. Use the actual transaction date. If an instalment was rejected or paid late, record the amount and date that actually occurred; do not silently preserve the scheduled date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Calculate the terminal value

For an ongoing investment, multiply the units held by the NAV on the chosen valuation date. For a completed redemption, use the proceeds credited to you. If an exit load applies, include its effect in the realized proceeds. AMFI notes that a redemption price includes an exit load where applicable.

Do not use a later NAV for the terminal value merely because it produces a more convenient result. Write the valuation date beside the answer.

3. Enter a positive terminal cash flow

Place the portfolio value or redemption proceeds on the valuation date as a positive amount. An XIRR calculation requires at least one negative and one positive cash flow. If you received a distribution in cash, add it as a positive cash flow on the payment date. If it was reinvested, record the additional units or the reinvested amount according to the statement and use a consistent total-return treatment.

4. Run XIRR in a spreadsheet or calculator

In a spreadsheet, put amounts in one column and dates in a second column, then apply the XIRR function to both ranges. Conceptually, XIRR solves for the annual rate r that makes the dated cash flows net to zero:

Σ [cash flow i ÷ (1 + r)^((date i − first date) ÷ 365)] = 0

The result is annualized and uses the actual spacing between dates. It is not the simple average of instalment-level returns and does not mean every instalment earned that rate for the entire period.

5. Check the output

  • Confirm that contributions are negative and the terminal value is positive.
  • Check that dates are real date values, not text strings.
  • Verify that the terminal value uses the stated NAV date.
  • Investigate an error or implausible result by looking for a missing cash flow, a duplicated instalment or an incorrect sign.
  • Recalculate with the actual redemption proceeds if you want a realized rather than an unrealized return.

Illustrative cash-flow layout

The following numbers are an example of the layout, not a performance claim about any fund. The instalments are monthly and the final value is measured on 10 January 2026.

10 January 2026 +₹66,000 Portfolio value on valuation date

Enter the complete table in the XIRR function to obtain the annualized return for this particular contribution history. The answer will change if one instalment was late, the valuation date changes, a distribution is paid, or a load reduces redemption proceeds.

NAV timing can change the answer

AMFI explains that NAVs are declared daily after markets close. For purchases, the applicable NAV depends on realization and availability of money in the mutual fund’s bank account before the relevant cut-off timing under the applicable rules. Consequently, a mandate date, debit date, allotment date and NAV date may not be identical.

Assigning every instalment the NAV published on the scheduled SIP date can therefore produce a different result from the account statement. Use the transaction and allotment records whenever possible. If you must use an assumed NAV convention for an analysis, state it and apply exactly the same convention to every fund and every rolling window.

Handle irregular cash flows instead of averaging them away

XIRR is designed for dated cash flows. Add a withdrawal as a positive cash flow on the date money left the fund, and include the reduced portfolio value at the terminal date. Record a switch as the outgoing and incoming transactions at their actual dates if the switch changes the investment being measured. Include additional one-time purchases, step-ups and distributions separately.

Do not replace an irregular history with “total invested divided by number of months.” That removes the timing information that makes XIRR appropriate. A missed instalment is not a zero-value investment; it is an absent cash flow. A late instalment has a different exposure period from an on-time instalment.

What a rolling return is

A rolling return repeats a fixed-horizon calculation across many historical start dates. For example, a five-year rolling analysis might begin on every month-end for which five years of data are available. Each window ends five years after its own start date. The start-date increment, such as monthly or daily, is a methodological choice and must be reported.

For a fund-level rolling return, use the scheme’s point-to-point total return over each window. A total-return basis accounts for distributions as well as capital gains or losses. Growth and distribution options must be treated consistently: if distributions are paid, include them in the return; if they are reinvested, use the reinvested value and document that convention.

Rolling results should be shown as a distribution. A single best period hides weak experiences, while a simple average can be distorted by a few exceptional windows.

How to calculate SIP rolling XIRR

1. Select the window and start-date increment

Choose a horizon such as five years and an increment such as one month. The horizon should match the question you are asking; a short horizon can be dominated by market conditions at the endpoints, while a longer horizon produces fewer eligible windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Define one contribution schedule

Specify the SIP amount, frequency and instalment-date convention. For each start date, include the scheduled contributions that fall inside that window. If the study models a ₹10,000 monthly SIP, use ₹10,000 for every eligible instalment in every fund and every window. A step-up schedule is valid, but its increases and dates must be fixed in advance.

3. Determine the ending value for each window

Use the portfolio value at the same horizon for that start date. The value can be calculated from units and the applicable NAV, or from actual redemption proceeds if the exercise is explicitly realized. Apply one rule for exit loads, distributions, taxes and transaction costs across all windows.

4. Calculate XIRR for that window

Enter the window’s dated contributions and its terminal value into XIRR. Then advance the start date by the chosen increment and repeat. Each window is a separate cash-flow calculation; do not combine all windows into one XIRR.

5. Summarize the distribution

Report the number of windows, median XIRR, lower and upper percentiles or the full range, and the percentage of windows with negative returns. Also give the first and last eligible dates and the valuation convention. These details allow another reader to reproduce the exercise.

Minimum disclosure for a reproducible analysis

  • Fund name, plan and option, including whether distributions are reinvested.
  • SIP amount, frequency, instalment-date rule and treatment of missed payments.
  • Window duration, start-date increment, first and last start dates.
  • NAV or redemption valuation rule and the date used for each endpoint.
  • Whether loads, taxes and transaction costs are excluded or included.
  • Benchmark identity and whether its Total Return variant is used.
  • Number of windows and the statistics reported.

No single official Indian standard for SIP rolling XIRR is established by the sources reviewed. A calculator’s output is therefore not the only canonical answer. The assumptions are part of the result.

Fund rolling return and SIP rolling XIRR are different questions

Feature Fund rolling return SIP rolling XIRR
What it evaluates Scheme performance over equal-length NAV periods Investor experience under a specified dated contribution schedule
Cash flows Usually one starting value and one ending value, with distributions handled on a total-return basis Every instalment, plus withdrawals or distributions, and one terminal value
Weighting Time-weighted style measurement around the selected period Money-weighted measurement affected by the timing and size of contributions
Useful for Assessing consistency and comparing scheme performance Assessing what a recurring investor’s cash-flow path earned
Why results differ Does not model when an investor added money Later contributions have less or different market exposure than earlier ones

Do not compare a fund’s trailing CAGR directly with your SIP XIRR as though they were interchangeable. The fund measure can help evaluate the scheme; XIRR can help evaluate your investment history. Each needs its own label.

How to compare two schemes fairly

Keep the investment experiment identical

Use the same horizon, start dates, contribution amounts, frequency, instalment-date rule and terminal valuation dates. A comparison in which one fund receives a different SIP date or a different number of instalments is measuring different cash-flow experiments.

Compare like with like

Choose schemes with comparable objectives and categories. State the plan and option for each. Comparing a growth option with a distribution option without adjusting for distributions can make one result appear artificially lower or higher.

Use the appropriate benchmark

SEBI’s mutual fund master circular says benchmark selection should align with a scheme’s objective, asset allocation and investment strategy, and specifies the Total Return variant of the selected index for scheme benchmarking. Use the benchmark assigned to the scheme and disclose the exact variant. A benchmark that does not match the portfolio’s mandate is not a fair yardstick.

Show consistency, not only a headline number

Statistic What it tells the reader
Number of windows How much historical evidence is included
Median SIP XIRR The middle historical investor experience
Lower percentile or weakest window How the strategy behaved in difficult start periods
Upper percentile or strongest window How favorable start periods affected the result
Range or spread How widely outcomes varied
Negative-window share How often the modeled SIP ended below its annualized break-even rate
Fund rolling return statistics Scheme-level consistency on the same historical windows

Present the median, weak-period outcomes, spread and negative-window share together. An average alone can conceal both severe losses and unusually strong periods.

Why your SIP return can differ from the fund’s published return

Different investment dates

A fund return may begin with a single NAV at the start of the period. Your first instalment may have been months later, and each subsequent instalment experienced a different market path. A falling market can temporarily improve the purchase price for later instalments; a rising market can reduce the number of units those instalments buy.

Different endpoint and valuation rules

Your statement may value units on a different NAV date from the one used in a published fund table. A realized redemption also reflects any applicable exit load, while an unrealized account value may not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distributions and total-return treatment

Mutual-fund returns can include income distributions as well as capital gains or losses. If one calculation reinvests distributions and another ignores cash paid out, the figures are not comparable.

Fees, loads, taxes and transaction costs

Published scheme returns and personal results may use different treatments of expenses or transaction-level costs. State whether each analysis is before or after the items you include. Fees and expenses are regulated, but their effect still needs to be represented consistently in a comparison.

Irregular behavior

Missed instalments, additional purchases, switches and withdrawals change the investor’s cash-flow path. A standard calculator that assumes an uninterrupted SIP cannot reproduce that account exactly.

Interpreting the results responsibly

Rolling calculations describe what happened in historical windows; they do not promise that the same distribution will occur in the future. A high median does not remove the possibility of loss, and a low negative-window share does not guarantee protection in a new market regime. Use the results as descriptive evidence alongside the scheme objective, risk, costs and benchmark fit, not as personalized investment advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before relying on an answer, confirm current scheme documents, benchmark assignments, transaction dates and applicable loads. Re-run the calculation when a correction changes an instalment date, NAV, distribution or terminal value. Keep the methodology with the spreadsheet so that a future result can be compared on the same basis.

A concise audit checklist

  1. Have all actual instalment dates and amounts been entered with the correct signs?
  2. Is the terminal value tied to one clearly stated NAV or redemption date?
  3. Are exit loads, distributions, taxes and transaction costs either consistently included or explicitly excluded?
  4. Does the XIRR range contain both the dated cash flows and the terminal value?
  5. For rolling SIP XIRR, are the window length, start-date increment and contribution schedule fixed in advance?
  6. Are the number of windows, median, weak and strong percentiles, range and negative-window share reported?
  7. Are fund rolling returns and SIP XIRR labeled separately?
  8. Does each scheme use a suitable benchmark and the benchmark’s Total Return variant?
  9. Could another reader reproduce the NAV timing and distribution treatment from the disclosure?

If the answer to each question is yes, the result is an auditable description of a defined cash-flow experiment rather than an ambiguous headline return.
