How to Calculate a Stock’s Five-Year Return and CAGR From Historical Prices

To calculate a stock’s five-year result, choose comparable starting and ending trading closes, divide the ending value by the starting value, and subtract one. That gives the cumulative return. To express the same growth as an annual rate, calculate (ending value / starting value)^(1 / years) − 1; for exactly five years, the exponent is 1/5. Use split-adjusted prices for a price return, or a provider-defined dividend-and-split-adjusted close for a total return, and disclose the dates, currency, dividend treatment, taxes and fees.

What a five-year stock return actually measures

A five-year return describes what happened between two historical observations. It is not a forecast and it does not describe the path taken between the dates. A stock could have doubled and then fallen back, or risen steadily; an endpoint calculation records only the beginning and ending values.

Measure What it includes Typical price field Use it when
Price return Change in the share price, with stock splits handled so that the price series remains comparable; dividends are excluded. Split-adjusted close, if the provider supplies one. You want to isolate appreciation in the quoted share price.
Total return Price change plus distributions such as dividends. A reinvested total-return series treats each distribution as buying more shares. A provider’s adjusted close, provided its definition includes dividends and splits. You want an approximation of an investor’s growth with distributions reinvested.

Vanguard describes total return as including dividends, interest and capital gains. The SEC’s standardized-return framework likewise uses an average annual compounded rate that equates an initial investment with its ending value and assumes reinvestment of dividends for cumulative total return in performance graphs. A price-only calculation should never be labeled “total return.”

Choose a consistent five-year window

“Five years ago” is not necessarily a trading day. A calendar date can fall on a weekend, an exchange holiday or a day when the security did not trade. Use the last trading day on or before the intended start date and the last trading day on or before the intended end date, then record the actual dates used.

Keep the observations comparable

  • Use the same ticker or security throughout the period. Do not switch between a common share, depositary receipt, preferred share or a fund that merely has a similar name.
  • Use the same exchange and currency. A U.S.-dollar return and a euro return answer different questions unless you explicitly convert one.
  • Use the same price convention at both endpoints: unadjusted closes for a deliberately raw price series, split-adjusted closes for a price return, or the same provider’s dividend-and-split-adjusted series for total return.
  • Write down the provider, download date and field name. Providers can revise historical data and can define “adjusted” differently.

Exact five years versus approximately five years

If the two observations are on the same calendar date five years apart, using years = 5 is a reasonable presentation. If the dates differ by weeks or months, calculate elapsed years under a stated day-count convention rather than silently calling the period five years. The cumulative return does not depend on annualization; only the CAGR changes.

Calculate the cumulative return

Let V0 be the starting value and V1 the ending value. The cumulative return is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cumulative return = (V1 / V0) − 1

Multiply the decimal result by 100 when reporting a percentage. If a hypothetical $1,000 investment becomes $1,800, the cumulative return is (1,800 / 1,000) − 1 = 0.80, or 80%.

The same calculation works for a single share, a $10,000 portfolio or any other starting amount, as long as both values use the same type of price and the same currency. A positive result means the endpoint is higher; a negative result means it is lower.

Calculate CAGR instead of dividing by five

CAGR, or compound annual growth rate, converts endpoint growth into the constant annual rate that would produce the same result if it compounded every year. The SEC expresses the relationship as P(1 + T)^n = ending value, where P is the initial value, T is the annual rate and n is the number of years. Solving for the rate gives:

CAGR = (V1 / V0)^(1 / years) − 1

For an exactly five-year interval:

CAGR = (V1 / V0)^(1 / 5) − 1

Using the $1,000-to-$1,800 example, the five-year CAGR is 1.8^(1/5) − 1 ≈ 0.1247, or about 12.47% per year. Dividing the 80% cumulative gain by five would produce 16%, which is an arithmetic average, not a compounded annual rate. Compounding is why the annualized figure is lower.

Annualizing a non-exact interval

For dates that are not exactly five years apart, replace 5 with the elapsed time in years:

CAGR = (V1 / V0)^(1 / years) − 1

State how years was obtained, such as elapsed days divided by the day-count convention used by your spreadsheet or analysis system. Do not round the dates to “five years” merely to make the result look cleaner.

What CAGR does and does not say

CAGR smooths a variable sequence into one equivalent rate. It does not imply that the stock earned that rate in every calendar year, and it does not measure volatility, drawdowns or the order of gains and losses. Two stocks can have the same CAGR while exposing investors to very different interim declines.

Decide whether to use close or adjusted close

The right field depends on the return definition. Yahoo’s help documentation states: “Adjusted close is the closing price after adjustments for all applicable splits and dividend distributions.” When a provider explicitly defines its adjusted close that way, it is suitable for a dividend-inclusive endpoint calculation. Confirm the definition for any other data source instead of assuming every “adjusted” field is identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a price return

Use closes that are adjusted for stock splits but do not incorporate dividends. A split changes the number of shares and the quoted price without, by itself, changing the investor’s wealth. If a two-for-one split occurs and you compare an old raw close with a later raw close, the apparent price collapse can create a false loss. A split-adjusted series expresses the earlier price on a comparable share basis.

For a total return

Use a dividend-and-split-adjusted close whose methodology you have verified. This incorporates distributions into the historical value, normally on a reinvestment basis. If the provider does not offer such a field, reconstruct the return from split events, ex-dividend dates, dividend amounts and prices, applying each event in chronological order. Your reconstruction must state whether dividends are reinvested on the ex-date, payment date or another convention, because that choice changes the result slightly.

Why dividends change the answer

On an ex-dividend date, the quoted share price generally falls by approximately the distribution amount, all else equal. A price-only series records that decline; an investor who receives and reinvests the dividend owns additional value. Excluding dividends therefore measures price return, not the growth of a reinvested investment.

A complete worked example

Assume the same company and currency are used at both endpoints:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item Value
Starting trading date January 3, 2021 (the last trading close on or before the chosen start date)
Ending trading date January 3, 2026 (the last trading close on or before the chosen end date)
Starting adjusted value $50
Ending adjusted value $90
Interval Five years under the stated date convention
  1. Compute cumulative return: (90 / 50) − 1 = 0.80, or 80%.
  2. Compute CAGR: (90 / 50)^(1/5) − 1 = 12.47% after rounding to two decimal places.
  3. Label the result according to the field. If the values are dividend-adjusted, report an 80% total return and 12.47% total-return CAGR. If they exclude dividends but are split-adjusted, report an 80% price return and 12.47% price-return CAGR.

The mathematics is identical; the economic meaning changes with the data series.

Calculate the result in a spreadsheet

Put the documented start value in cell B2, the end value in B3, the start date in A2 and the end date in A3. Keep the values in the same column only if they use the same adjustment convention.

Result Spreadsheet formula
Cumulative return =B3/B2-1
Five-year CAGR =(B3/B2)^(1/5)-1
CAGR using an elapsed-year cell =(B3/B2)^(1/C2)-1, where C2 contains your documented elapsed years.

Format the result cells as percentages and retain extra decimal places until the final display. Rounding each endpoint before calculating can introduce avoidable error, especially for low-priced securities or long intervals.

Build a transparent calculation sheet

  • Store the exact trading dates next to the two values.
  • Store the ticker, exchange, currency and provider field name in a notes area.
  • Include a label such as “price return, dividends excluded” or “total return, dividends reinvested.”
  • Keep the unrounded formulas visible so another reader can reproduce the displayed percentage.

Reconstruct total return when adjusted close is unavailable

Reconstruction is possible but requires more records than an endpoint price comparison. Start with a split-consistent share count or price series. Then process every distribution between the two dates in chronological order, using the declared reinvestment rule. For each dividend, determine how many additional shares the distribution buys at the chosen reinvestment price; carry those shares into the next event and the ending valuation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At minimum, retain the ex-dividend date, per-share dividend, split ratio, reinvestment price, resulting share count and ending price. Corporate actions such as special dividends, spin-offs, rights offerings or ticker changes may require additional treatment. If you cannot verify all events, use a provider-defined adjusted series or clearly limit the result to price return rather than presenting an incomplete total return.

Compare five-year results without mixing incompatible measures

A ranking is meaningful only when every observation is calculated on the same axes.

Comparison axis What must match Why it matters
Return type All price returns or all total returns. A dividend-paying company can look artificially weaker if its dividends are omitted while another company’s dividends are included.
Annualization All cumulative or all CAGR results. An 80% cumulative gain is not directly comparable with a 12.47% annualized rate.
Dates Identical intended start and end dates, using each security’s corresponding trading closes. Different windows can include different market events.
Currency The same currency, or an explicitly stated conversion method. Exchange-rate movements can materially change a foreign investor’s result.
Reinvestment The same dividend-reinvestment assumption. Cash dividends and reinvested dividends produce different ending values.
Costs and taxes The same treatment of commissions, fund expenses, withholding and taxes. A gross market-data return is not the same as an investor’s after-tax return.
Data methodology Comparable provider definitions and corporate-action handling. Different vendors can produce different adjusted histories.

Disclose assumptions that can change the result

A precise percentage can still be misleading if its assumptions are hidden. The SEC cautions that performance claims depend on how dividends, taxes, and market and economic assumptions are handled. Put the material assumptions beside the result, not in a distant footnote.

  • Dates: identify the actual start and end trading dates.
  • Security and currency: give the ticker, listing or exchange and currency used.
  • Price field: say whether the series is raw close, split-adjusted close or dividend-and-split-adjusted close.
  • Dividends: state whether they were excluded, received as cash or reinvested, and identify the provider’s convention if applicable.
  • Taxes and fees: state whether the figures are gross or net of commissions, fund expenses, withholding and investor taxes.
  • Annualization: state the elapsed-year convention and the rounding precision.

Common errors and how to fix them

Calling price appreciation total return

Symptom: You divide the ending close by the starting close even though the company paid dividends. Fix: label the output price return, or use a verified dividend-adjusted series for total return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using raw closes through a split

Symptom: The chart shows an implausible loss or gain on the split date. Fix: use split-adjusted observations or apply the split ratio consistently to earlier prices and shares.

Dividing the cumulative percentage by five

Symptom: An 80% gain is reported as 16% per year. Fix: use the compound formula; an 80% gain over five years is about 12.47% CAGR.

Mixing dates or vendors

Symptom: Two calculations for the same stock disagree slightly. Fix: check whether one uses a different trading day, currency, adjustment policy, rounding rule or revised corporate-action record.

Treating CAGR as a forecast

Symptom: The historical CAGR is used as an expected annual return. Fix: describe it as a smoothed summary of the observed endpoints; it says nothing by itself about the next five years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring taxes and fees

Symptom: A published return is compared with an investor’s account statement and appears too high. Fix: determine whether each figure is gross or net and apply the same treatment before comparing.

A reporting template you can reproduce

For a clear published or personal record, write the result in one sentence with its definitions attached:

“From [actual start trading date] to [actual end trading date], [security] returned [cumulative percentage] on a [price or total-return] basis in [currency], using [price-field definition]. Its CAGR was [annualized percentage] over [elapsed years], with dividends [excluded or reinvested] and [taxes and fees included or excluded].”

Five-minute verification checklist

  • Are the start and end observations actual trading closes?
  • Is the same security, exchange and currency used at both endpoints?
  • Does the chosen field handle splits correctly?
  • Does “total return” include dividends under the provider’s stated definition?
  • Are cumulative return and CAGR labeled separately?
  • Was CAGR calculated with elapsed years rather than a simple division?
  • Are reinvestment, tax, fee and rounding assumptions disclosed?
  • Could another reader reproduce the result from the dates, values and formulas shown?
