How to buy Scottish Mortgage shares in a stocks and shares ISA (2026–27 guide)

To buy Scottish Mortgage shares in a UK stocks and shares ISA, use an ISA provider that offers London-listed investment trusts, contribute cash within your remaining annual allowance, search for Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust or ticker SMT, review the live dealing quote and charges, and submit a share order. You are buying shares in the listed investment trust from another market participant—not each company in its portfolio. This guide explains the eligibility checks, exact decision points, costs, tax treatment and risks to review before dealing.

What you are buying

Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC is a listed investment trust. Its shares trade on the stock market under the ticker identified by the trust as SMT:LN. When you buy, you own shares in the trust. The trust, managed by Baillie Gifford, owns and manages a portfolio of companies; you do not receive direct ownership of every underlying holding.

The trust says that an investor can buy its shares from another investor on the stock market, with a savings platform or corporate broker matching buyers and sellers. Read the issuer’s official FAQ for its explanation of the dealing process.

Because the security is exchange-listed, the price you pay is the market price available when your order is matched. That price can differ from the value of the trust’s assets per share, known as net asset value (NAV).

What you need before placing an order

A qualifying stocks and shares ISA

Open or use a UK stocks and shares ISA with a provider that allows dealing in qualifying listed investment-trust shares. HM Revenue & Customs sets the ISA rules, but each provider decides which securities and markets it makes available. HMRC’s manager guidance on eligible investments is at Stocks and shares ISA investments for ISA managers.

Check the provider’s security list before depositing money. Search for the full trust name and ticker, and confirm that the result is the London-listed line you intend to buy. A provider may show several similarly named instruments or may not offer the trust at all.

Available subscription allowance

For the 2026–27 tax year, the overall ISA subscription limit is £20,000. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Contributions to cash, stocks and shares, innovative finance and lifetime ISAs count toward the applicable overall limits and account rules. Your usable amount is £20,000 minus subscriptions you have already made across ISAs during that tax year. HMRC’s current overview is at Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs): Overview.

Ask the provider how it records subscriptions if you hold more than one ISA. The allowance concerns money paid into ISAs, not the later market value of investments.

Cash ready for dealing

Most providers require cleared cash in the ISA before an order can be submitted. Allow time for a bank transfer or card payment to settle under that provider’s timetable. The amount you need includes the intended purchase value plus any dealing charge and, where applicable, a foreign-exchange or other transaction cost shown on the confirmation screen.

Information for an informed decision

Decide in advance how much loss and volatility you could tolerate, whether a concentrated global equity trust fits your objectives, and whether you are comfortable with the trust’s use of borrowing. An ISA removes certain personal taxes; it does not remove investment risk or guarantee a return.

How to buy Scottish Mortgage in your ISA

  1. Open the dealing service. Sign in to your stocks and shares ISA and choose the option labelled something like “Deal”, “Trade” or “Buy”. Menus differ by provider, so use its current help pages if the label is different.
  2. Search for the security. Enter “Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust” and then verify the ticker SMT (the issuer identifies the line as SMT:LN). Check the exchange, currency and description before continuing. Do not assume that a search result with a similar name is the correct listed trust.
  3. Choose “Buy”. Select the number of shares or the cash amount offered by the provider. Some services accept only whole shares; others may support fractional dealing. Use only the functionality and minimum order size displayed by your provider.
  4. Select an order type. A market-style order generally deals at the provider’s available price, while a limit order specifies the maximum price you will pay and may remain unfilled. The exact names, validity periods and availability of order types are provider-specific. Read the on-screen explanation rather than assuming two platforms use identical rules.
  5. Review the quote and costs. Check the live offer price, estimated total, dealing fee, platform fee and any other charge shown. Confirm whether the quote is delayed, how long it is valid and what happens if the price moves before execution. Published factsheet numbers are not substitutes for the live dealing quote.
  6. Check the allowance and cash again. Make sure the subscription will not take you above your remaining 2026–27 ISA limit and that sufficient cleared cash remains for all displayed costs.
  7. Submit and retain the confirmation. Authorise the order only after checking the security identifier, quantity, order type, price conditions and total cost. Save the contract note or electronic confirmation. A limit order can expire or remain pending; a completed order should show the execution price and charges.

There is no single screen-by-screen route that applies to every provider. The dealing screen, settlement timing and fee schedule are contractual features of the service you choose, so rely on the provider’s current information at the point of trade.

Price, NAV and the premium or discount

An investment trust has two relevant values:

  • Market price: the price at which investors are currently willing to buy or sell the listed share.
  • NAV per share: the trust’s assets minus liabilities, divided by the number of shares, calculated under its reporting methodology.

The market price may be above NAV (a premium) or below NAV (a discount). Supply and demand, sentiment, expectations about the portfolio and the trust’s capital structure can all affect the gap. A premium can narrow, or a discount can widen, even if the underlying portfolio value has not moved by the same percentage.

As a dated illustration, Baillie Gifford’s April 2026 factsheet reported a share price of 1,410.00p and NAV per share of 1,376.21p at 30 April 2026, described as a 2.5% premium. Those figures are a historical snapshot, not a current quote. Read the April 2026 factsheet for the document’s date and definitions, then obtain current dealing and NAV information before investing.

When reviewing a provider’s screen, compare the live market price with the latest published premium or discount only as context. A NAV figure published at an earlier date cannot tell you exactly what your order will execute at.

Charges to identify before dealing

Separate the trust’s own operating cost from charges levied by your ISA provider. The trust’s ongoing charge is deducted within the fund and therefore affects returns; dealing and platform charges are billed by the provider under its tariff.

Cost or figure What it means Dated information
Ongoing charge The trust’s recurring operating cost, expressed as a percentage of assets; it is not usually taken as a separate bill from your cash balance. Scottish Mortgage’s official FAQ stated 0.33% as at 31 March 2026. The April 2026 factsheet reported 0.31%. The documents use different dates and should not be combined; check the latest official disclosure.
Dealing charge A fee your ISA provider may apply when you buy or sell. Not universal; the amount and whether it varies by order type are set by your provider and shown in its current tariff or confirmation screen.
Platform or account charge A recurring fee for holding investments or using the ISA service. Provider-specific; check whether it is a flat amount, percentage, or tiered charge.
Other transaction costs Possible market, settlement or currency-related costs, depending on the service and instrument. Only use amounts displayed or documented by the provider for your order.

The FAQ with the 0.33% figure is available from Scottish Mortgage at its investor questions page. The difference between 0.33% and 0.31% is why the document date matters; do not present either number as a current guarantee.

ISA tax treatment

Under the general ISA rules described by HMRC, interest, income and capital gains arising from investments held in an ISA are not taxable, and ISA income and gains do not normally need to be declared on a tax return. The wrapper does not prevent the share price from falling and does not make a loss deductible against other investments.

HMRC’s How ISAs work guidance explains subscriptions, withdrawals and the tax treatment. Keep provider statements and contract notes for your own records even though ISA gains and income are generally outside the tax return.

If you already own the shares outside an ISA

Do not assume that existing Scottish Mortgage shares held in a dealing account can simply be moved into an ISA. HMRC states that shares generally cannot be transferred directly into an ISA, except for the specified employee-share-scheme case. You may need to sell outside the ISA and make a new ISA subscription, with potential market movement and dealing consequences. Check the current HMRC rules and your provider’s process before acting; neither a sale nor a repurchase is automatic or risk-free.

Risks specific to Scottish Mortgage

Share-price and NAV volatility

The listed share can fall in value, and the market price can move differently from NAV. A narrowing premium or widening discount can add to, or offset, changes in the underlying portfolio. You may receive less than you invested.

Gearing

The trust can borrow money to make investments. Baillie Gifford’s April 2026 factsheet reported gross gearing of 11% and net gearing of 10% at 30 April 2026. Those are dated figures, not a permanent level. Borrowing can magnify gains and losses relative to an ungeared portfolio, so read the latest report and factsheet for the current position.

Concentration and global exposure

Scottish Mortgage invests globally and can have meaningful exposure to particular companies, sectors, countries and private businesses. A global label does not mean every region or industry has equal weight. Review the latest portfolio disclosure to understand concentration before deciding how large a position is appropriate for you.

Emerging-market and China-related risks

The trust’s materials describe risks that can arise in emerging markets, including China: political and economic instability, market closures, trading and liquidity difficulties, settlement problems, corporate-governance standards, changing regulation, legislation and taxation. These risks can make prices, valuations and the ability to buy or sell less predictable. Scottish Mortgage publishes investor risk information at its investor information and risk disclosures page.

No guaranteed outcome

Neither a rising NAV nor past performance guarantees future returns. Consider your investment horizon, need for access to cash and capacity for loss. This is process information, not a personal recommendation.

How to assess the investment before clicking “Confirm”

  • Purpose: write down why the trust belongs in your portfolio and what role it is meant to play.
  • Position size: check how much exposure you already have to the same companies, sectors, countries or private-market themes through other investments.
  • Valuation: note the live share price and the latest available premium or discount, while recognising that both can change.
  • Borrowing: read the latest gearing disclosure and decide whether amplified market movements are acceptable.
  • Liquidity: confirm that you can leave the money invested through periods when selling may be difficult or the price may be well below NAV.
  • Costs: record the trust’s latest ongoing charge and your provider’s dealing and platform fees.
  • Allowance: verify your remaining ISA subscription capacity for the current tax year.

What changes from 6 April 2027?

HMRC’s announced 2027 reform says that, from 6 April 2027, the annual cash-ISA subscription limit for people under 65 is scheduled to become £12,000, while the overall ISA limit remains £20,000. The announcement also says common investments such as investment trusts are not treated as cash-like assets under that measure. This planned change does not alter the £20,000 overall limit for 2026–27. Check the final legislation and updated HMRC guidance before relying on the future rules; the announcement is summarised in the ISA reform 2027 factsheet.

After your purchase

Keep the contract note, monitor provider statements and review the trust’s official reports for updated NAV, gearing, costs and portfolio information. A price alert can help you observe market movements, but it does not replace checking the premium or discount, liquidity and your own allocation. Reassess the holding when your objectives, time horizon or ability to tolerate losses changes, rather than relying on a past purchase price.

Practical checklist

  1. UK stocks and shares ISA open with a provider that offers the security.
  2. Remaining 2026–27 ISA allowance calculated across all your ISAs.
  3. Cleared cash available for the purchase and displayed charges.
  4. Correct listing verified as Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust, ticker SMT.
  5. Live quote, order type, validity and execution conditions understood.
  6. Latest ongoing charge, provider fees and other costs checked.
  7. Market price considered alongside the dated NAV and premium/discount information.
  8. Gearing, concentration, emerging-market risks and potential loss accepted.
  9. Order confirmation and contract note retained.

Bottom line

A stocks and shares ISA can hold qualifying Scottish Mortgage shares, but the transaction is still a market purchase with a fluctuating price, provider charges and investment-trust risks. Use the 2026–27 £20,000 overall allowance carefully, verify the SMT listing and live dealing terms, and read the latest official cost, gearing and risk disclosures before submitting an order.
