How to Buy Personal Health Insurance in India While You Have Employer Cover

Yes—you can buy an individual health-insurance policy while you are covered by an employer plan. For an India-based buyer, the personal policy is a separate contract with its own premium, medical disclosures, waiting periods, exclusions, limits, hospitals and claims rules. Buy it for continuity and control, but keep the employer policy active while you remain eligible and start any migration or portability process well before that cover ends.

What buying a personal policy adds to employer cover

An employer health plan is generally tied to your employment and to the group contract selected by the employer. An individual policy is issued to you or your family under retail policy wording. The two arrangements can coexist, but the personal policy does not automatically inherit the employer plan’s benefits, waiting-period credits, hospital list or limits.

A personal policy can be useful when you want cover that is not dependent on changing jobs, leaving the workforce or an employer changing its group benefits. It may also let you choose the insured people, sum insured and policy features that fit your household rather than the group plan’s standard design. It is not mandatory for every employee, and an employer plan is not automatically inadequate; the decision depends on your eligibility, dependants, contract terms, budget and continuity needs.

What remains separate

  • The retail policy has its own underwriting and proposal form.
  • Its waiting periods, exclusions, co-payments, room and intensive-care-unit limits, sub-limits and eligible hospitals may differ from the group plan.
  • Renewal, grace-period and cancellation rules come from the retail policy wording.
  • Any migration or portability rights are governed by applicable rules and the policies involved; do not assume that every group benefit transfers unchanged.

Step 1: Make an inventory of your employer policy

Before requesting personal quotes, collect the documents that define your current cover. Ask human resources, the group insurer or the appointed intermediary for the latest policy schedule, employee benefits summary, customer information sheet, exclusions and claims contacts. Record the following in one place:

  • Everyone insured, including dependants and the relationship of each person to the employee.
  • The sum insured and whether it is individual or shared among family members.
  • Room-rent and intensive-care-unit limits.
  • Co-payments and sub-limits for particular procedures, illnesses or services.
  • The eligible hospital network and cashless-payment process in the cities where treatment is likely.
  • Pre-existing-condition and specified-treatment waiting periods.
  • Renewal date, grace-period wording and the date cover would end if employment ends.
  • How to notify a claim, obtain pre-authorisation and escalate a service problem.

These details are more useful than the employer’s headline sum insured. A large limit can still leave a substantial bill if room charges, procedures or hospital categories are capped. Keep the policy schedule and contacts even after you buy personal cover; they are needed while the group policy remains active and may be relevant if you later ask for migration.

Step 2: Decide who the personal policy should cover

One insured person

An individual policy can be appropriate when only one person needs independent cover, when family members already have suitable insurance, or when you want separate limits rather than a shared pool. Confirm the applicant’s age, medical history and eligibility requirements before paying.

A family floater

A family floater uses one shared sum insured for the listed members. Compare that shared limit with the likely needs of every person, not just the youngest or healthiest member. A single large hospitalisation can use much of the common amount, leaving less for another member during the same policy year. Check the permitted relationships, age limits and renewal treatment for each member in the product wording.

Combining structures

Some households use an individual policy for one member and a floater for others, but the suitability depends on the insurer’s rules and the family’s risk profile. Obtain a written quote and schedule for the exact combination; do not infer eligibility from an advertisement or a verbal illustration.

Step 3: Compare retail policies on the same contract terms

Request several proposals and place the answers in one comparison sheet. Premium alone cannot show whether two policies provide comparable protection. Use the same insured people and sum-insured target for each quote, then compare the restrictions that affect an actual claim.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Why it matters
Cover amount and structure Is the policy individual or family floater? What is the sum insured for each listed person or for the shared pool? A shared limit may be inadequate if several family members need treatment in one year.
Hospital access Which hospitals are eligible, and which provide cashless service in the locations you use? Cashless availability and local access affect how practical the policy is at admission.
Room and ICU limits Are charges capped by a rupee amount, room category or percentage of the sum insured? A room choice above the permitted category can trigger additional out-of-pocket costs under the policy terms.
Co-payment What percentage or fixed amount must you pay, and does it apply to every claim or only specified situations? A lower premium can come with a larger share of each eligible bill.
Sub-limits Are particular procedures, illnesses, implants or services capped below the overall sum insured? The headline cover does not remove a specific internal cap.
Waiting periods What applies to pre-existing conditions and to named or specified treatments? Coverage may be deferred even after the policy starts.
Exclusions Which treatments, conditions, expenses or circumstances are not covered? An excluded expense cannot be recovered merely because the total sum insured remains unused.
Renewal and continuity How is renewal handled, what is the grace period, and what continuity benefits are preserved after timely payment? A missed due date can affect continuity and future claims treatment.
Claims process What is the notification deadline, pre-authorisation route and reimbursement-document requirement? Knowing the process before an emergency reduces avoidable delays.
Job-exit options Can an eligible group member migrate with the same insurer, and what terms, underwriting and waiting-period credit apply? Migration is a separate route from portability to another insurer.

IRDAI consumer guidance specifically directs buyers to examine restrictions such as room-rent and ICU limits, co-payment, sub-limits, exclusions, waiting periods and eligible hospitals. Use the customer information sheet together with the complete policy wording; the summary is not a substitute for the contract.

Waiting periods and the 36-month ceiling

IRDAI consumer guidance accessed in 2026 states a maximum 36-month waiting period for pre-existing diseases and specified treatments. That is a ceiling described in the guidance, not a promise that every policy uses 36 months or that an individual condition will be covered immediately. The issued policy wording and any accepted migration or portability terms determine the waiting period applicable to you.

Pre-existing conditions

Read the insurer’s definition and disclose the conditions it asks about. A diagnosis, recurring symptom, medication, prior investigation or treatment may be relevant even if you have not claimed under the employer plan. If a condition is subject to a waiting period, record the date from which the policy counts that period and whether continuity credit is recognised.

Specified treatments

Policies can apply separate waits to named procedures or conditions. Compare the list and duration across products rather than assuming that an employer plan’s treatment schedule will carry over to retail cover.

Step 4: Complete the proposal and medical process accurately

IRDAI’s consumer guidance says, “You need to disclose details of all pre-existing health problems.” Answer every proposal question fully and follow the insurer’s instructions for medical examinations or additional records.

  1. Prepare a factual health list covering diagnoses, symptoms, medicines, tests, hospitalisations and treatment requested by the form.
  2. Use the dates and descriptions in your medical records where possible; do not guess that a past issue is irrelevant.
  3. Upload or provide documents in the format requested and keep copies of the completed proposal and attachments.
  4. Ask the insurer to clarify an ambiguous question before submitting rather than leaving it blank or giving a partial answer.
  5. Review the declaration and sign only after checking that the answers match the information supplied.

Concealment or inaccurate answers can lead to a claim dispute, rejection or cancellation, according to IRDAI guidance. A complete disclosure may result in an exclusion, a waiting period, a higher premium or a request for more medical information; those outcomes are preferable to discovering a disclosure problem during a claim.

Step 5: Pay only after acceptance and verify the issued policy

IRDAI advises paying the premium only after the insurer has accepted the proposal. Ask for the acceptance decision, premium, effective date and any special terms in writing. Once documents are issued, check:

  • Names, dates of birth and relationship details for every insured person.
  • Sum insured, policy period and renewal due date.
  • Endorsements, exclusions, loading, co-payment and waiting periods.
  • Room, ICU and procedure sub-limits.
  • Customer information sheet, complete wording and claims contacts.
  • Cashless hospital information and the procedure for reimbursement claims.

If the delivered terms differ from what you understood, contact the insurer promptly and use any applicable free-look rights under the policy and current rules. Do not cancel the employer policy while checking the retail documents; keep existing cover in force until the new policy’s acceptance and start date are clear.

Step 6: Keep the policies active and protect continuity

Renew before the due date

Record the retail policy’s renewal date in more than one calendar. IRDAI warns that delay can affect coverage and continuity benefits. A grace period is time after the due date during which payment may preserve continuity benefits, subject to the policy and applicable rules; it is not permission to treat the policy as continuously active for every purpose. Pay on time rather than relying on the grace period.

Maintain an evidence folder

Store the policy schedule, customer information sheet, wording, premium receipts, proposal answers, medical reports, endorsements and claim correspondence. Keep the employer schedule and proof of employment dates separately. This record makes it easier to show what cover existed on a particular date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review after major changes

Recheck the sum insured and covered members after marriage, a birth, a dependent reaching an age limit, a move to another city or a change in employer benefits. Ask the insurer how additions or deletions are handled before assuming a person is covered.

When you leave the employer: migration with the same insurer

IRDAI guidance describes a migration right for an individual member of an indemnity-based group health policy to an individual or family floater policy with the same insurer. Migration is the route to investigate when employment or group eligibility is ending and you want to remain with that insurer.

Start early

Write to the group insurer well before your last employment date or the group policy’s termination date. Request the available individual and family-floater products, premium, application deadline, underwriting requirements, waiting-period credit, exclusions and effective date. Ask for the answer in writing.

Do not assume identical benefits

The retail product may have different limits, exclusions, co-payment, hospital network, sum-insured options and premium from the employer plan. Ask precisely which continuity credits are recognised and which benefits, if any, must begin a new waiting period. A migration right does not mean that the employer policy’s exact benefits transfer unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coordinate the dates

Keep the group policy evidence and continue following its claim process through the last day of eligibility. Do not allow the personal policy to lapse while the migration application is being processed. Obtain confirmation of acceptance and the start date before treating the migration as complete.

Portability to another insurer is a different process

Portability means moving health-insurance coverage to another insurer under applicable norms. It is not the same as migration from a group policy to a retail policy with the same insurer. Ask the receiving insurer whether your group membership and policy type qualify, what documents it needs and how continuity credits will be assessed.

IRDAI portability guidance says to apply at least 30 days before, but not earlier than 60 days before, the renewal due date. In practice, identify the renewal date first, then submit within that 30-to-60-day window. Confirm the receiving insurer’s process and preserve the existing policy until the new insurer accepts the application and the new start date is unambiguous.

Questions to ask before choosing portability

  • Is the application being treated as portability at renewal rather than as a new purchase?
  • Which waiting-period credits and accumulated continuity benefits will be recognised?
  • Will medical underwriting, exclusions, co-payment or premium differ under the proposed policy?
  • What happens if the receiving insurer declines, delays or offers terms you do not accept?
  • Which policy remains active during the transfer and how should premium be paid?

How to judge the premium and total cost

There is no single meaningful “average” premium for this decision. The quote depends on the people insured, ages, cover amount, policy structure, disclosed health information, location, limits and insurer’s underwriting. Compare the premium with the restrictions attached to it.

Cost item What to verify
Quoted premium Is it for the exact members, sum insured, policy term and location you requested?
Co-payment exposure How much of an eligible bill could you still pay under the stated percentage or fixed amount?
Sub-limit exposure Could room, procedure or disease caps leave a balance even when the overall sum insured is high?
Waiting-period impact Which foreseeable treatments remain subject to a wait, and is continuity credit available?
Renewal terms What are the renewal conditions and payment deadline stated in the policy?

A low quote with severe caps may provide less usable protection than a higher quote with broader limits. Conversely, paying for features or a sum insured that does not match your household’s needs can waste money. Compare like for like and save the final proposal, not only a marketing illustration.

Where to buy and whom to verify

Use an India-licensed insurer or a registered intermediary listed through IRDAI’s consumer channels. Verify the entity’s registration and the product’s current availability before paying. An intermediary should be able to identify the insurer, provide the customer information sheet and explain how to submit a claim, but the policy wording remains the controlling document.

Do not send premium to an unverified personal account or rely on a promise that a claim will be paid. Use the insurer’s documented payment route, retain the receipt and check that the policy number and insured names match your application.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Buying only on the headline sum insured

Problem: Internal caps, co-payment or room restrictions reduce the amount payable for a particular admission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Read the limits table and calculate the out-of-pocket share for the types of treatment your family may realistically need.

Leaving out a past diagnosis or medicine

Problem: The insurer later argues that relevant information was withheld.

Correction: Disclose what the proposal asks for, retain the evidence and ask for written clarification when a question is unclear.

Assuming the personal policy starts immediately for every condition

Problem: Pre-existing and specified-treatment waits still apply under the retail wording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Record each waiting period and ask how an accepted migration or portability credit changes it.

Waiting until the last day of employment

Problem: You may miss a migration deadline or create uncertainty about the next policy’s effective date.

Correction: Contact the group insurer early, request written terms and coordinate acceptance before group cover ends.

Confusing migration with portability

Problem: A same-insurer group-to-retail route and a move to another insurer have different eligibility and timing rules.

Correction: Ask which process applies, then follow its specific deadline and documentation requirements.

Allowing renewal to lapse

Problem: Delayed payment can affect coverage and continuity benefits.

Correction: Set reminders, pay before the due date and keep proof of payment.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Confirm that your policy decision is for India and identify the employer policy’s end date if employment stops.
  2. Collect the group schedule, customer information sheet, claims contacts and full terms.
  3. List the people to insure and decide whether each needs an individual limit or a shared floater.
  4. Obtain comparable quotes and record hospitals, room and ICU limits, co-payment, sub-limits, exclusions and waiting periods.
  5. Complete every proposal answer accurately, disclose health history and complete requested medical examinations.
  6. Wait for written acceptance; then verify the issued schedule, wording, customer information sheet and effective date.
  7. Keep employer cover active while eligible and set renewal reminders for both arrangements.
  8. If leaving employment, ask the same insurer about migration early and obtain the premium, terms, underwriting requirements and continuity-credit decision in writing.
  9. If considering another insurer, apply for portability at renewal at least 30 days and no earlier than 60 days before the due date, as described in IRDAI guidance.
  10. Keep all documents and do not cancel existing cover until replacement acceptance and its start date are certain.

Bottom line

For an India-based employee, buying a personal health policy alongside employer cover is a continuity strategy, not a simple duplication of benefits. Compare the retail contract’s real restrictions, disclose health information completely, pay only after acceptance, renew on time and distinguish same-insurer migration from portability to another insurer. The employer policy and the personal policy should be managed as separate contracts until the insurer confirms exactly what can transfer.
