To buy Meta Platforms stock, open and fund a brokerage account, search for Meta Platforms Class A common stock under ticker META, review the order and submit it. Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies META as a listing on the Nasdaq Global Select Market; its Class B common stock is not listed on a public exchange. A brokerage can also provide fractional-share access or let you buy an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that holds Meta, but those routes have different ownership, costs and risks.
This guide explains the process for a U.S. investor and highlights the checks that matter before placing an order. Availability, fees, eligibility and order handling depend on the brokerage and your jurisdiction, so verify the firm’s current terms.

What you are buying when you search for META
Meta Platforms, Inc. has more than one class of common stock. The publicly traded security available through a normal stock-market order is Class A common stock, ticker META, on the Nasdaq Global Select Market. The company’s 2025 Form 10-K states that its Class B common stock is not listed on a public stock exchange. Therefore, an order ticket showing META should be checked for the Class A designation before submission.
Buying a listed share gives you direct exposure to Meta as one company. Your result will depend on Meta’s market price, company-specific developments and the size and timing of your position. An ETF that owns Meta gives indirect exposure through a fund portfolio instead; buying an ETF share does not make you a direct holder of a Meta share.

What you need before placing an order
A brokerage account available where you live
Exchange-listed stocks and ETFs are normally bought and sold through a brokerage account. Choose a firm that serves your jurisdiction, then read its relationship summary (Form CRS), account agreement, fee schedule and policies before opening the account. The SEC’s guide to opening a brokerage account explains the information and documents firms commonly request.
Do not assume that a firm offering whole shares also supports fractional META shares. Fractional trading is a separate program with its own eligible securities, order rules and transfer policies.

Fund the account using a method the brokerage accepts. A transfer may be subject to the firm’s posting time, settlement rules or temporary limits on when newly deposited money can be used. The amount needed depends on whether you buy a whole share, a fraction or an ETF share, plus any transaction or account charges disclosed by the firm. No live META quote or universal fee applies to every brokerage, so use the order ticket’s current figures rather than an old price shown elsewhere.

The account type you intend to use
In a cash account, you pay the full purchase amount with your own money. In a margin account, the broker may lend against the account and charge interest. Margin can increase buying power but also increases potential losses; a falling position can require additional funds or other action under the firm’s agreement. Confirm the account type during the application and again before sending an order. The SEC explains the distinction in its brokerage-account guidance.
Step-by-step: buying a whole META share
- Select and review the brokerage. Confirm that it is authorized to serve you, read its Form CRS, account terms and fee disclosures, and understand how it handles orders, statements and transfers.
- Open the account. Provide the identity, contact, financial and tax information requested by the firm. Select a cash account if you do not intend to borrow; select margin only after understanding the interest, collateral and loss provisions.
- Complete funding. Add money through the firm’s supported bank transfer or other method. Wait for the balance to become available for trading under the firm’s stated rules.
- Find the security. In the trading screen, search for “Meta Platforms” or “META.” Check that the result says Class A common stock and identifies the Nasdaq listing. Do not treat an unlisted Class B reference as an alternative exchange-traded Meta share.
- Choose the order instructions. The available order types, time-in-force choices and trading-session rules vary by firm. Read the order ticket and the broker’s explanation before choosing an instruction. The SEC’s order-types bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, advises investors to check their firm’s availability and policies: Understanding Order Types.
- Enter the quantity. For a whole-share purchase, enter the number of shares. The ticket should show the estimated amount, applicable charges and the account from which the money will be taken.
- Review every field. Confirm the ticker, Class A description, quantity, order instructions, estimated total, account type and any displayed warnings. A quote can change before execution, and an order may not execute if its conditions are not met.
- Submit and retain the confirmation. Save the order number and final execution details. The confirmation and later statement are your records of what was submitted and what actually executed.
Fractional META shares: buying less than one share
A fractional share is ownership of less than one full share. The SEC’s investor bulletin defines it as “when you own less than one full share of a stock or other security.” Fractional ownership can let an investor invest a chosen dollar amount without first accumulating enough money for a whole META share, but the brokerage’s program determines how the arrangement works.
Before entering a fractional order, confirm all of the following in the firm’s current documentation:
- Whether META is an eligible security today, since a broker can limit fractions to selected stocks or ETFs.
- Whether you enter a dollar amount, a fractional quantity or both, and the minimum amount or increment.
- Which order instructions are accepted for fractions and when those orders are executed. A firm may handle fractional orders differently from whole-share orders.
- How commissions, spread-related costs or other charges apply. A “zero commission” statement does not establish that every cost is zero.
- How dividends, stock splits, mergers and other corporate actions are credited or processed.
- Whether fractional holders receive voting rights, and if so, how votes are aggregated or limited.
- Whether the fraction can be transferred to another firm. Some programs require selling a fraction before an account transfer, while others use a different process.
- How the broker handles liquidity and an order that cannot be immediately matched in the market.
These features are not standardized across brokers. The SEC’s Fractional Share Investing bulletin describes the questions investors should ask. Read the firm’s fractional-share agreement rather than assuming that rights attached to a whole Class A share apply in exactly the same way to a fraction.

Using an ETF to get indirect Meta exposure
An ETF is a fund whose shares trade in market transactions. A fund may hold Meta alongside other companies, so buying one ETF share gives you an interest in the fund’s portfolio rather than a separately registered Meta share. The percentage invested in Meta can change as the fund rebalances, as prices move or as the fund’s strategy changes.
Before buying an ETF, review:
- Objective and strategy: Determine whether the fund is broad-market, sector-focused, index-tracking or otherwise designed to hold Meta at all. A name or past holding is not a guarantee of a current position.
- Current holdings: Check the fund sponsor’s dated holdings file or other official fund material to see Meta’s actual weight and the date of the information.
- Expenses: Read the prospectus for the expense ratio and other fund expenses. These reduce the fund’s return over time even when no separate trading commission is charged.
- Trading price versus NAV: Retail investors buy and sell ETF shares at the market price. That price can be above or below the fund’s net asset value (NAV), particularly when trading conditions are stressed.
- Liquidity and spread: Check trading volume and the bid-ask spread shown by your broker. A wider spread is an additional execution cost even if the ETF has no stated commission.
- Principal risks: Read the prospectus for concentration, sector, tracking, market, liquidity and other risks that apply to that particular fund.
The SEC’s Updated Investor Bulletin on ETFs explains market transactions, NAV differences, prospectuses, holdings and expenses. Do not infer that an ETF is safer, cheaper or more diversified without checking its actual portfolio and terms.
Whole shares, fractional shares and ETFs compared
| Route | What you own | Cash and access questions | Main checks before trading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole META shares | Class A common stock in Meta Platforms, Inc. | Enough cash for the requested number of shares; normal exchange order access through a brokerage | Current quote, order instructions, account type, transaction costs and company-specific concentration |
| Fractional META shares | Less than one share handled through the brokerage’s fractional program | Broker-dependent eligibility, minimums and dollar- or share-based entry; transfer rules may differ | Execution method, accepted order types, fees, dividend and corporate-action treatment, voting and liquidity |
| ETF containing META | Shares in a fund that owns a portfolio, potentially including Meta | One ETF share or an eligible fraction if the broker supports it; market price may differ from NAV | Objective, current holdings, expenses, bid-ask spread, liquidity, NAV premium or discount and principal risks |
The central choice is the type of exposure you want. A whole or fractional META position is company-specific. An ETF can spread exposure across holdings, but it adds fund expenses, portfolio decisions and the possibility that its trading price differs from NAV. Fractional access can reduce the cash needed for a direct position, but it also makes you dependent on the broker’s special rules.

Order handling and timing: what is and is not universal
Brokerage platforms do not offer identical order menus. One firm may support an instruction that another does not, and fractional orders can have a narrower set of choices than whole-share orders. The displayed trading session, expiration, price controls and execution timing are firm-specific. Read the current help page and the order preview for the account you are using.

A submitted order is not the same as an executed trade. Keep the confirmation showing whether the order was accepted, partially filled, canceled or completed. If the ticket displays a warning about an unavailable security, insufficient buying power, a restricted session or a fractional limitation, resolve that issue before resubmitting rather than repeatedly sending the order.

Choosing the wrong Meta security
Search results can include company names, funds or unlisted share-class references. Match the issuer, ticker META and Class A description on the confirmation screen. The Nasdaq listing is Class A; do not tell a broker to buy Class B on Nasdaq.
Assuming every broker supports fractions
Fractional trading is optional and program-specific. If META is not eligible, the broker may reject a fractional order or convert the request under its own rules. Verify eligibility and minimums before transferring money for that purpose.

Using margin unintentionally
An application can present margin as a default or optional feature. Check the account label and buying-power display. If you want purchases funded only with your deposited cash, use a cash account and confirm that designation in the agreement.

Treating an ETF as a Meta share
An ETF ticker is not Meta’s ticker, and an ETF’s Meta weighting can be small or can change. Read the fund’s dated holdings and objective. Also check whether the ETF is trading at a premium or discount to NAV and what expenses apply.
Relying on stale prices or fees
A historical closing price is not a current quote, and a fee table can change. Use the live order preview and the broker’s current disclosures. The 2025 Form 10-K includes historical market information, but it does not replace a current quote.
A pre-submission checklist
- You are using a brokerage authorized in your jurisdiction and have read its Form CRS and fee disclosures.
- The account is labeled cash or margin as you intended.
- Funds are available under the broker’s funding and settlement rules.
- The security is Meta Platforms Class A common stock, ticker META, if you intend direct ownership.
- You have verified fractional eligibility and program terms if ordering less than one share.
- You have checked an ETF’s objective, current holdings, expenses, spread, liquidity and NAV relationship if using a fund.
- The order ticket shows the intended quantity, instructions, estimated total and account.
- You have saved the confirmation after submission and will verify the final execution.
Bottom line
The standard route is a funded brokerage account and an order for Meta Platforms Class A stock under META. Fractional shares can lower the cash needed for direct exposure only when the broker supports META and its terms fit your needs. An ETF may provide broader, indirect exposure, but you must evaluate its holdings, expenses, liquidity and price relative to NAV. In every case, verify the security, account type and current broker rules before submitting the trade.
