Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can often buy insurance directly from an insurer through its official website, telephone sales channel or customer-service office. The safe process is to define the risk and coverage you need, confirm that the insurer is authorized in your jurisdiction, compare equivalent policies, read exclusions and obligations, answer underwriting questions completely, and verify the issued policy before relying on it.
Direct purchase is not a universal route. Availability, consumer protections, advice requirements and pricing depend on your country and the type of insurance. A direct channel can remove an agent or broker from the transaction, but it also leaves you responsible for choosing suitable cover and understanding the contract.

What “buying direct” means
Buying direct means the insurer itself sells the policy to you through a channel it controls, rather than you buying through an independent broker, tied agent or other intermediary. Typical channels are:
- Insurer website: You complete a quotation and application online and receive policy documents electronically.
- Telephone sales: You speak with the insurer’s sales or customer-service team and complete an application by phone.
- Insurer office or service centre: You apply in person where the insurer offers that service.
A website does not automatically prove that you are dealing directly with the insurer. Some sites belong to comparison businesses, lead generators or outsourced sales firms. Check the legal entity named on the quotation, application and policy, and confirm who is authorized to provide advice or arrange the contract.

Direct purchase is available in several markets. Canadian federal consumer guidance describes buying from an insurer online, over the phone or in person. European Union consumer guidance recognizes direct sales, often through an insurer’s website. Ireland’s Central Bank says consumers may buy directly from an insurance provider or through a broker. Singapore has a defined Direct Purchase Insurance (DPI) framework for certain term and whole-life policies. None of these examples means every insurer sells every product directly in every country.
When buying direct can make sense—and when it may not
Direct purchase may suit you when
- You already understand the type of policy and the amount of cover you need.
- Your circumstances are relatively straightforward and the insurer offers a complete online or telephone application.
- You are comfortable comparing exclusions, deductibles or excesses, waiting periods, renewals and cancellation terms yourself.
- You want to deal with the insurer’s own claims and servicing channels.
An intermediary may add value when
- You are unsure which type of insurance fits your risk or how much coverage is appropriate.
- You have complex health, business, property or claims circumstances that may require explanations across several insurers.
- You need someone to help interpret policy wording, assemble evidence or negotiate with an insurer.
- You want market-wide advice rather than information about one insurer’s own products.
Direct sales staff can explain their company’s products, but they should not be treated as independent advisers who can recommend the best policy across the market. Singapore’s MoneySense guidance expressly says that people uncertain about the insurance type or coverage amount should consult a financial-advisory representative. The broader trade-off is responsibility: avoiding an intermediary may simplify the transaction, while you take on more of the product-selection and contract-reading work.
Step 1: Define the risk and the cover before requesting a quote
Start with the loss you want the policy to pay for, not the cheapest premium displayed on a website. Write down the event, people or assets at risk, the amount that would be needed after a loss, and how long protection is required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Life insurance: Estimate debts, dependants’ income needs, education costs and final expenses, then decide whether protection is needed for a fixed term or for life.
- Health or critical-illness cover: Identify the benefits, treatment costs, waiting periods and conditions that matter to you.
- Property or motor insurance: Establish the value of the asset, likely repair or replacement cost, liability exposure, deductible or excess you could afford, and any lender requirements.
- Travel or other short-term cover: List destinations, dates, activities, pre-existing-condition rules and cancellation risks.
Singapore’s DPI guidance tells buyers to determine their needs, coverage amount and affordability. Ireland’s regulator similarly emphasizes suitability for the consumer’s needs. A lower quote is not useful if its limits, exclusions or duration leave the original risk uncovered.
Step 2: Locate the insurer’s official direct channel
- Type the insurer’s address yourself or use a trusted regulator or government directory to find it. Check that the website uses the correct legal name and secure connection.
- Look for a clearly identified “buy,” “get a quote,” “apply,” or telephone-sales route. A general information page may not offer direct sales.
- If buying by phone, call the number shown on the insurer’s official website or a regulator listing—not a number supplied in an unsolicited message.
- If applying in person, confirm that the office is operated by the insurer and ask for the legal entity that will issue the policy.
In Singapore, DPI may be purchased from an insurer’s customer-service centre or website when available. In Canada, the federal consumer agency identifies online, telephone and in-person purchase modes. The exact route and products offered remain insurer- and jurisdiction-specific.

Step 3: Verify authorization before paying or sharing sensitive information
Check that the insurer is licensed or otherwise authorized to conduct the relevant insurance business where you live. Use your national, state, provincial or territorial regulator’s register and match the legal name, not merely a trading name or logo. Canadian, Irish and US National Association of Insurance Commissioners consumer guidance all recommend checking regulatory status.
Also verify the seller. Ireland’s Central Bank warns about “ghost brokers”—fraudsters who sell forged or invalid discounted policies. Warning signs include an unusually low price, pressure to pay immediately, payment to a personal account, refusal to provide policy wording, a web address that differs slightly from the insurer’s genuine address, or documents that name a different company.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Do not send identity, health or payment information until the entity and channel are verified.
- Ask for the insurer’s legal name, license information, complaint route and policy-document sample.
- Pay only through the insurer’s stated payment process and retain receipts.
- If a regulator’s register does not show the firm or product, stop and ask the regulator how to verify it.
Authorization does not mean a policy is suitable or inexpensive; it establishes that the seller is subject to the relevant regulatory regime.
Step 4: Get comparable quotes, not just several prices
Request quotes using the same assumptions. Changing the coverage amount, deductible, term or optional benefits makes the prices non-comparable. Record each quotation’s date, quotation number, assumptions and expiry date.
| Comparison area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Which events, illnesses, losses or liabilities are insured? What are the benefit limits, sub-limits and coverage duration? |
| Exclusions and restrictions | What is excluded? Are there waiting periods, eligibility rules, geographic limits, condition-specific exclusions or claim conditions? |
| Out-of-pocket cost | What is the premium, deductible or excess, installment charge and applicable tax? How can the price change at renewal? |
| Optional features | Which riders or add-ons are included, optional or unavailable? What do they cost and what limits apply? |
| Value features | Are there benefits, cash values, surrender values or other features? For life insurance, distinguish guaranteed figures from non-guaranteed illustrations. |
| Service and claims | How are claims reported? What documents and deadlines apply? What telephone, online and complaint channels are available? |
| Company status | Is the insurer authorized for this product and location? What financial-strength, complaint or claims information is publicly available? |
Canadian government guidance cautions that a cheaper policy may provide less coverage or service. The European Union’s consumer guidance says, “Going directly does not necessarily lead to lower prices.” Treat a comparison website as a shortlist rather than a complete market: it may omit products, rank offers using commercial criteria or display policies that do not fit your needs. Verify the final terms directly with the insurer.

Step 5: Read the pre-sale information and policy wording
Before accepting, read the quotation, product summary, schedule, full policy wording, endorsements and any application declaration. Confirm:
Recommended Free Tools
- the insured person, property, beneficiaries or other named parties;
- the insured risks, benefit amount, limits, term and effective date;
- exclusions, conditions, warranties, waiting periods and geographic restrictions;
- premium amount, payment frequency, taxes, late-payment consequences and renewal pricing;
- claim notification rules, evidence requirements and settlement method;
- cancellation rights, refunds, surrender terms and any cooling-off period; and
- the insurer’s complaint and escalation process.
For most EU non-life products, buyers should receive a standardized Insurance Product Information Document before signing. The EU consumer page notes that this document requirement does not apply to life policies. Do not assume that a summary replaces the contract or that a cooling-off period exists on the same terms everywhere; use the policy and local law.
Step 6: Complete underwriting accurately
Depending on the product, the insurer may assess age, health, occupation, lifestyle, claims history, driving record, property details, credit information or other risk factors. Underwriting can determine whether you are eligible, the premium, the amount the insurer will offer and whether exclusions or special conditions apply.
Answer every question completely and truthfully, using the dates and records requested. Do not guess when the form asks for a specific fact: pause and obtain the information or ask the insurer how to answer. Canadian consumer guidance warns that inaccurate or incomplete answers can jeopardize the policy or a later claim. A direct application does not reduce your disclosure duties.
Read the declaration before submitting it. It may state that your answers form the basis of the contract, authorize medical or other checks, or require you to report changes before the policy starts. Save a copy of the completed application and every document uploaded.

Step 7: Confirm that the policy is actually in force
- Wait for the insurer’s acceptance and policy number; a quotation or payment receipt alone may not prove that cover has begun.
- Check the issued policy against the quote and application: names, limits, exclusions, premium, term, beneficiaries and effective date.
- Confirm whether the first payment cleared and whether any inspection, medical evidence, identity check or outstanding document remains.
- Record renewal dates, premium-review provisions, cancellation instructions and the claims telephone number.
- Store the policy, schedule, endorsements, application, payment receipts and insurer correspondence in a secure location and give essential details to an appropriate family member or business contact.
If anything differs from what you applied for, contact the insurer promptly in writing and ask what protection applies while the discrepancy is resolved. Keep the response. Exact delivery, cancellation and cooling-off rules vary by jurisdiction and product, so follow the contract and applicable law.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What direct insurance may cost
There is no general rule that direct purchase is cheaper. Singapore’s DPI is a specific exception with a defined cost rationale: it is sold without financial advice, no commission is charged to an FA representative, and the Singapore government consumer resource says premiums are lower as a result. That statement applies to Singapore DPI and should not be extended to all insurance.
In other markets, an insurer may price direct and intermediary-distributed products differently, or the same policy may have different service features. A direct route can also involve costs that are not shown as a commission—for example, your time spent comparing policies, the risk of selecting inadequate limits, or paid assistance needed later. Compare total value: protection, exclusions, service, claims support, advice and renewal terms, not only the initial premium.
Singapore’s Direct Purchase Insurance framework
Singapore DPI is a jurisdiction-specific framework, not a global category of insurance. MoneySense describes term and whole-life cover bought directly from a life insurer without paying an FA representative. Both types cover death and terminal illness. Term DPI includes total and permanent disability (TPD) and optional critical-illness (CI) cover; whole-life DPI also includes TPD and optional CI cover. Product features are broadly standardized but not identical, so read each insurer’s fact sheet and checklist.
The MoneySense page was updated on 28 September 2026. Its limits and entry conditions are:

| DPI type | Sum assured per insurer | Entry age | Other conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Term DPI | S$50,000 to S$400,000 | Starts at age 18; maximum depends on product: 45, 60 or 65 | Fixed-period protection; optional CI limits and coverage periods vary by product and should be checked in current documents. |
| Whole-life DPI | S$50,000 to S$200,000 | Starts at age 18; maximum depends on product: 45, 60 or 65 | Lifelong cover or cover to a stated maturity age; optional CI limits and coverage periods vary by product and should be checked in current documents. |
| Aggregate term and whole-life DPI | S$400,000 maximum in aggregate | Not applicable | The aggregate cap applies across term and whole-life DPI with each insurer. |
Term DPI provides protection for a fixed period and has no savings or investment feature. Whole-life DPI provides lifelong protection or protection to a stated maturity age and includes an investment component that can build cash value. Whole-life premiums are generally higher, and early termination may produce little or no cash value. Use the insurer’s current product illustration to distinguish guaranteed values from amounts that depend on assumptions.
The official comparison route named in the Singapore guide is compareFIRST. MoneySense suggests shortlisting three or four products and comparing premiums, features, benefits, cash values and distribution cost, then buying from the insurer’s service centre or website when available. If you are unsure how much coverage you need or what insurance to buy, the guidance says to consult an FA representative.
How rules differ by jurisdiction
Canada
Federal consumer guidance says insurance may be purchased from an insurer online, over the phone or in person. It emphasizes checking licensing, comparing equivalent coverage and service, answering application questions accurately, and maintaining premiums and renewals. Provincial and territorial rules can add requirements, so verify the insurer and product with the relevant regulator.
European Union
EU consumer guidance recognizes direct sales through insurer websites and states that going direct does not necessarily lower prices. For most non-life products, the standardized Insurance Product Information Document should be provided before signing; the cited guidance distinguishes life insurance from that requirement. National rules and product-specific protections still apply.
Ireland
Ireland’s Central Bank describes buying directly from an insurance provider or through a broker, stresses suitability for the consumer’s needs, and warns about unauthorized sellers and ghost brokers. Check the Central Bank’s register and use its complaints process if a regulated firm does not resolve an issue.
United States
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ consumer guidance recommends checking the relevant state regulator and the credentials of the person or company arranging coverage. State rules, policy forms, licensing and cancellation rights vary, so use your state insurance department for current requirements.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing the lowest quote: Re-run the comparison with identical limits, deductibles, exclusions and duration.
- Assuming “direct” means independent advice: Ask whether the person represents one insurer or can compare the market.
- Skipping authorization checks: Match the legal entity to the regulator’s register before paying.
- Relying on a summary: Read the full wording, endorsements, schedule and application declaration.
- Understating health, claims or property information: Correct mistakes immediately and keep written confirmation.
- Confusing a quote with cover: Obtain the issued policy and verify its effective date and outstanding conditions.
- Ignoring renewal terms: Note whether premiums, deductibles, benefits or eligibility can change at renewal.
- Assuming every comparison site is complete: Check the insurer’s own documents and any products omitted from the comparison.
