1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo buy Heidelberg Materials stock, use a broker that permits German-market trading, then search for the ordinary share with ISIN DE0006047004, WKN 604700, or ticker HEI. The share is listed on Frankfurt’s Prime Standard and on the regulated markets in Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Munich. Xetra is the Frankfurt venue whose quote is shown in euros. US investors may instead use the sponsored OTC Level I ADR HDLMY, for which five ADRs represent one ordinary share.
The practical choice is therefore not simply “buy HEI.” You must select the instrument available in your country, confirm that your broker reaches the relevant venue, compare currency conversion and dealing charges, and check how dividends and taxes will be handled. This guide walks through that process and the records to keep after the trade.
Identify the exact Heidelberg Materials security
Company-name searches can return several instruments or delayed quote pages. Use an identifier supplied by the issuer instead.

Heidelberg Materials’ investor FAQ says the company is listed in Germany and included in the DAX, the S&P Global 1200 Construction Materials Index and the STOXX Europe 600 Construction & Materials Index. Index membership does not guarantee a return or determine whether your broker will accept an order.
Choose the ordinary share or the HDLMY ADR
Both routes provide exposure to the same issuer, but they are different securities traded through different market infrastructures. Availability, liquidity and total cost can differ by country and broker.

When the ordinary share may be more practical
Use the ordinary share when your account already supports Xetra or another German venue, you want the primary-market listing, or you are comfortable funding and settling a euro trade. A German quote can avoid an additional ADR layer, although your broker may charge more for foreign-market access or currency conversion.
When the ADR may be more practical
HDLMY can be operationally simpler for a US account that already handles OTC securities in dollars. OTC Level I trading can have wider spreads or less continuous liquidity than a primary exchange listing, so inspect the live quote and order-ticket disclosures rather than assuming the ADR will track the German quote exactly at every moment.

Understand the 5:1 ratio
The issuer’s share-and-ADR information states a 5:1 ADR ratio: five HDLMY receipts correspond to one ordinary share. The ratio affects the displayed per-unit price and the number of receipts associated with a dividend or corporate action. Depositary charges, currency conversion and timing can cause the cash amount you receive to differ from a simple multiplication of the German dividend by the ratio.
Check jurisdiction, account and broker access first
Before depositing money or entering an order, establish which instrument your residence and account type may hold. Securities permissions are set by the broker and can vary between taxable accounts, retirement accounts, joint accounts and professional classifications.

- Residence and regulation: Confirm that residents of your country may trade the German listing or the US OTC ADR and that the security is not restricted in your account.
- Market permissions: Ask whether the broker routes to Xetra, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf or Munich for the ordinary share, or to OTC Level I markets for HDLMY.
- Settlement and custody: Check whether the account can hold German equities, how foreign securities appear on statements, and whether there is a recurring custody charge.
- Currency service: Find out whether the broker converts automatically, lets you hold EUR, or applies an FX markup on each trade and dividend.
- Corporate actions: Verify how the broker handles dividends, ADR depositary fees, optional elections and any conversion or cancellation request.
No single fee, tax rate, minimum order size or availability rule applies to every investor. The broker’s current fee schedule and order disclosures control the transaction.
Step-by-step: place a Heidelberg Materials order
- Decide on the route. Select the German ordinary share or HDLMY only after confirming that the instrument is permitted in your jurisdiction and account. Write down the identifier you intend to use.
- Open the broker’s market and product permissions. In the account settings or dealing screen, confirm that German equities or US OTC securities are enabled. Some brokers require a separate agreement, knowledge test or risk acknowledgement.
- Search by identifier. Enter
DE0006047004,604700orHEIfor the ordinary share. EnterHDLMYfor the ADR. Check the instrument description, currency and venue; do not rely on a company-name match alone. - Inspect the quote. Note the bid, ask, quoted currency, market status, displayed venue and timestamp. A price shown in a portfolio may be delayed, indicative or from a different venue than the one that will execute your order.
- Estimate the all-in amount. Add the expected share value, commission, exchange or routing fee, FX conversion cost, custody charge and, for the ADR, any depositary fee shown by the broker. Ensure the account has enough cash for the broker’s reserve or margin rules.
- Choose order instructions. A market order prioritizes execution but does not set a maximum price. A limit order lets you specify the highest price you will pay (or, for a sell, the lowest you will accept); it may remain unfilled. Review duration choices such as day or good-till-cancelled only if your broker explains their treatment in that market.
- Confirm the venue and currency again. Make sure the order ticket names the intended German venue or OTC route and shows whether the broker will convert currency before execution or debit a foreign-currency balance.
- Submit and monitor status. After sending the order, record whether it is pending, partially filled, filled or rejected. Do not assume that an unfilled limit order will execute later without checking its expiry.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the execution price, quantity, timestamp, venue, commission, FX rate, currency and expected settlement date. These details are needed for tax records and for reconciling a dividend.
- Reconcile the holding. Once settlement is complete, check that the position is labelled HEI or HDLMY as intended, that the quantity reflects the ADR ratio where applicable, and that the cash balance reflects all charges.
How order execution differs between venues
German listing
The ordinary share can be quoted on several German venues, with Xetra identified by the issuer as the euro-quoted Frankfurt trading venue. Your broker may offer one venue by default or allow a choice. Compare the displayed spread, routing fee and market status before selecting an alternative. Local German trading hours and your broker’s cut-off times can affect when an order is accepted or queued; use the session information shown in the live ticket rather than assuming your home-market hours apply.
OTC ADR
HDLMY is a sponsored OTC Level I ADR rather than a listing on a US national securities exchange. OTC quotes can be less transparent or less liquid than exchange quotes, and the spread can widen when the German market is closed. A limit order can prevent an execution above your chosen ceiling, but it cannot guarantee a fill. Read the broker’s OTC risk disclosure and check whether the ticket identifies a market maker and any special handling charge.
Costs to compare before you click “Buy”
Because charges vary by broker, country and account, use this checklist instead of relying on a headline commission.
| Cost category | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Trading commission | Per-order or percentage charge for German or OTC dealing | A small purchase can be disproportionately affected by a fixed fee |
| Venue or routing fee | Exchange, clearing or foreign-market surcharge | The quoted commission may exclude market-access costs |
| Bid-ask spread | Difference between displayed buy and sell prices | A wide spread is an immediate trading cost even when commission is zero |
| Foreign-exchange conversion | Markup, separate conversion fee or rate applied to trade proceeds and dividends | The EUR ordinary share and USD ADR can create different conversion paths |
| Custody or account fee | Recurring charge for holding foreign shares or ADRs | It can matter more than the dealing fee for a long-term holding |
| ADR depositary fee | Per-ADR charge or deduction from distributions, if applicable | The depositary may deduct an amount that is not visible in the share price |
| Tax withholding | Withholding and reporting shown for your residence and account type | The net dividend can differ from the issuer’s declared gross amount |
Ask the broker for a sample cost disclosure for the exact instrument and order size. Do not substitute another German stock’s fee schedule or an old promotional rate.

Dividends, ex-date and ADR pass-through

Deutsche Börse’s Xetra notice records a €3.60 payment for the ordinary share on 19 May 2026, with an ex-dividend date of 14 May 2026. Those dates describe that payment event; they do not establish the next dividend date. Future declarations, record-date rules and payment dates must be checked in the issuer’s current announcements and your broker’s corporate-action notice.
Eligibility for the ordinary share
Your broker’s record-date and settlement rules determine whether a purchase is eligible for a particular distribution. Read the corporate-action notice attached to the holding rather than assuming that buying on the ex-dividend date qualifies.
Eligibility for the ADR
ADR holders receive distributions through the depositary after the underlying dividend is processed. The receipt quantity, currency conversion, withholding and any depositary deduction can change the amount and timing. Compare the broker’s ADR notice with the issuer’s gross dividend before reconciling the payment.

Taxes and reporting depend on where you live
The issuer and exchange information do not provide one universal tax rate. Your result can depend on residence, treaty status, account type, whether you own the ordinary share or ADR, and how your tax authority treats foreign dividends and capital gains.
- Read the broker’s pre-trade and dividend-withholding disclosure for the selected instrument.
- Provide any required tax-residency or treaty forms before the dividend is paid; late forms may not be applied retroactively.
- Retain the gross dividend, withholding amount, ADR fee, FX rate and net cash received.
- Keep purchase price, sale proceeds, commissions and currency conversions for capital-gains calculations.
- Use your tax authority or a qualified adviser for filing decisions; do not infer a rate from another investor’s country.
Common problems and fixes
The search returns several Heidelberg instruments
Switch from the company name to the exact ISIN or WKN for the ordinary share, or to HDLMY for the ADR. Confirm the currency and venue on the result page before proceeding.
The broker says the security is unavailable
Ask whether the restriction concerns your country, account type, the German venue, OTC Level I status or a temporary market-permission issue. If the ordinary share is unavailable, do not assume the ADR is automatically permitted; request confirmation for that specific ticker.
The quoted price looks inconsistent
Check whether one quote is in EUR and the other in USD, whether the ADR ratio is being reflected, and whether either quote is delayed. Compare executable bid and ask prices, not a stale last-trade field.

The order is rejected
Read the rejection reason for insufficient cash, missing market permission, invalid order duration, outside-session submission, minimum order rules or OTC restrictions. Correct only the identified issue and resubmit after verifying the ticket.
The dividend is lower or later than expected
Reconcile the gross amount with the number of shares or ADRs, the 5:1 ratio, withholding, FX conversion and any depositary deduction. Then compare the broker’s payment date with the issuer’s and exchange’s published event dates.
A practical decision framework
- Start with access: choose the route your regulated broker actually supports in your jurisdiction.
- Then compare execution: review live spread, venue, trading hours and order types for the same intended purchase size.
- Then compare total cost: include commission, routing, FX, custody, ADR and tax-related deductions rather than looking only at the share price.
- Finally check administration: select the instrument whose statements, dividend reporting and tax documents you can maintain accurately.
If two routes remain acceptable, document why you selected one and retain the quote and fee disclosure used at the time. Reassess only when your broker, residence, account or the security’s terms change; a different route is not automatically better because its displayed price is lower.
Records to keep after purchase
- Order confirmation showing identifier, venue, quantity and execution price.
- Currency-conversion confirmation and the FX rate used.
- Commission, routing, custody and ADR-fee entries.
- Settlement confirmation and the final portfolio position.
- Dividend notices showing gross amount, withholding, deductions, FX and net payment.
- Issuer or exchange notices for dividends and other corporate actions.
Review the holding periodically for changes to listing, ADR terms, broker permissions, fees and tax treatment. The issuer’s FAQ and share information identify the current listing and ADR structure, but those arrangements and broker conditions can change.
