Check the marking system used in the country of sale, confirm the stated fineness or karat, read the mark with magnification, insist on an itemized invoice, and know where an independent assay can be obtained. A hallmark is evidence within a legal system—not a universal guarantee—and a loupe or home test cannot replace professional testing.
The steps below cover the United Kingdom, United States and India. Their marks, legal obligations and verification tools differ, so use the section for the jurisdiction in which you are buying.

Start with the claim you are actually buying
Before comparing prices, identify the product. “Gold jewellery” can describe materially different constructions:
- Solid gold alloy: gold mixed throughout with other metals. “Solid” generally means the piece is not hollow; it does not mean 24-karat gold.
- Gold-filled, gold overlay or rolled gold plate: a layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal. The term and minimum layer requirements depend on the market.
- Gold electroplate: a thin electrically deposited gold layer over another metal.
- Hollow jewellery: an internally empty form that may be made from a gold alloy. It can have a legitimate fineness mark, but its weight and durability differ from a solid piece.
Ask the seller to state the construction in writing. A gold-colour surface is not proof that the item is a gold alloy, and “solid gold” is not a synonym for 24K. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to distinguish these descriptions before purchase.

Understand karat and fineness numbers
Purity is the proportion of gold in the alloy. In a parts-per-thousand system, 375 means at least 375 parts gold in 1,000, or 37.5%. In the karat system, 24K represents 24 parts out of 24; 18K contains 18 parts gold and six parts other metal, while 14K contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metal.
| Common designation | Gold fraction | Equivalent fineness | What the number does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 24/24 | Usually expressed as 999 or 999.9 when marked in parts per thousand | Whether the item is hollow, its workmanship cost, or its resale spread |
| 22K | 22/24 | Approximately 916 | The net weight of gold after removing stones and other components |
| 18K | 18/24 | 750 | Seller reliability or authenticity of the stamp |
| 14K | 14/24 | Approximately 585 | Making charges, taxes or stone value |
| 9K | 9/24 | 375 | Whether the item meets a particular country’s exemption or marking rules |
Thus, “916” means approximately 91.6% gold by mass, with the balance made up of alloying metals. It is a purity declaration, not a price, weight or guarantee that every component of a multi-part item is gold. A fineness mark must be interpreted together with the local hallmark or quality-mark system.
One purchase, three marking systems
There is no single worldwide hallmark checklist. The same-looking number can have different legal significance depending on where the item was made, assayed and sold.

| Market | What to look for | How verification works | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Sponsor or maker mark, fineness mark and assay-office mark; a date letter may also appear | Read the complete hallmark and, when necessary, ask an assay office or qualified professional to interpret it | Qualifying items above the exemption weight generally require a recognized hallmark. Gold under 1 gram is exempt from compulsory hallmarking under the cited GOV.UK guidance. |
| United States | Karat quality mark plus the responsible maker’s name or U.S.-registered trademark nearby | Check that the quality mark and trademark are present and consistent with the seller’s description | This is not the UK-style assay-office system. FTC consumer guidance says not to buy a marked gold piece when the trademark is absent. |
| India | BIS Standard Mark, carat/fineness and a six-character alphanumeric HUID | Use the BIS Care app’s “Verify HUID” feature and retain the invoice | Use the current BIS requirements for the article and seller; small parts and detachable components can have separate marking requirements. |
How to buy safely: a practical sequence
1. Decide what evidence you require
Write down the minimum acceptable specification before visiting a shop or opening an online listing: construction (solid alloy, hollow, filled or plated), target karat or fineness, approximate net gold weight, acceptable workmanship premium, and your return deadline. This prevents a low headline price from distracting you from a lower purity or a high non-gold charge.
2. Research the seller independently
Use recommendations from people you trust and check complaints or reviews rather than relying only on testimonials displayed by the seller. For a UK purchase, look for an appropriate trade-body affiliation and establish where an online trader is based. If the trader is outside the UK, enforcing consumer rights can be difficult even when the listing is visible to UK shoppers.
Ask who is legally responsible for an online listing, where returns must be sent, and whether the item is made to order. Save the listing, photographs, specifications and messages before checkout because an online description can change.

3. Ask for the full price breakdown
Request, in writing, the stated karat or fineness, net gold weight, non-gold components, stone weight or description where relevant, workmanship or making charge, taxes and any other fee. For a simple item, compare the declared metal value separately from labour and design premiums. A large “discount” is not useful if the seller has omitted weight or added an unexplained charge.
4. Inspect the mark before paying
Ask the seller to show every mark under magnification. A jeweller’s loupe of at least 10× is an inspection aid: it can help you read tiny characters, but it cannot prove that a stamp is genuine or that the metal beneath it meets the stated fineness. Photograph the marks and match them with the invoice description.
5. Reconcile the item, mark and invoice
Confirm that the article you hold is the one described on the invoice, that the purity mark matches the stated purity, and that the recorded weight is identified as net precious-metal weight where applicable. Check clasps, detachable charms, stones and other components rather than assuming one mark covers every part.
6. Secure the exit before handing over money
Obtain the refund, exchange and return conditions in writing, including the deadline, condition requirements, return shipping responsibility and treatment of bespoke work. Keep the receipt, payment record, seller identity, product listing and all written claims. These records are more useful in a dispute than a verbal assurance.
Reading a UK hallmark
For a qualifying UK item, a complete hallmark consists of three core elements:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Sponsor or maker mark: identifies the registered party responsible for submitting the article for hallmarking.
- Fineness mark: states the minimum gold content in parts per thousand, such as 375, 585, 750 or 916.
- Assay-office mark: identifies the office that tested and marked the article.
A date letter can help date an item but is optional, so its absence does not by itself invalidate a UK hallmark. Gold under 1 gram is exempt from compulsory hallmarking under the GOV.UK/British Hallmarking Council summary updated in 2022; an exemption is not proof of purity, so use the invoice and testing options with extra care. UK law also recognizes qualifying Convention marks, meaning an imported item may use a legally recognized mark rather than the familiar domestic arrangement.
Rank #3
Do not infer that an antique, tiny component or imported item follows exactly the same rule as a new domestic article. Ask the seller which exemption or recognition rule applies and record the answer.
Checking a U.S. gold item
In the United States, look for a karat quality mark such as 18K or 14K and the name or U.S.-registered trademark of the maker or seller responsible for the mark nearby. The FTC advises consumers not to buy a marked gold piece when the trademark is missing. A quality mark without an identifiable responsible party gives you less practical recourse if the claim is wrong.
U.S. marks are not equivalent to an assay-office hallmark. They are quality and responsibility markings governed by consumer-protection rules, so also inspect the seller’s written description and return policy. Ask whether “gold” refers to an alloy throughout or a surface treatment such as gold-filled or electroplate.
Checking Indian BIS hallmarking and HUID
For hallmarked gold jewellery in India, look for the BIS Standard Mark, the carat or fineness declaration and the six-character alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) described in BIS guidance. Enter the HUID in the BIS Care app’s “Verify HUID” feature before completing the transaction, and compare the result with the physical article and invoice.
BIS FAQ guidance says each detachable part should be hallmarked where applicable. A pendant, detachable charm or separately supplied component should therefore not be treated as automatically covered by a mark on another part. Ask the jeweller to explain any component that is not marked and document the explanation.
Implementation figures are historical, not a current count: a Government of India press release in 2024 reported an initial phase covering 256 districts, followed by 32 additional districts in a second phase and 55 in a third, and more than 40 crore gold jewellery articles hallmarked with HUID. Those figures describe rollout at that date and should not be used as a present-day total.

What a useful invoice should contain
An invoice is your evidence of what was promised. In India, BIS says an invoice for a hallmarked precious-metal article should include:
- a description of each article;
- the net precious-metal weight;
- purity in carat and fineness; and
- hallmarking charges.
BIS also says an authentic invoice is needed for dispute or complaint resolution. In any country, request a receipt that identifies the seller, the date and the specific item, and records the material claims you relied on. Ask that the construction (solid, hollow, filled or plated), non-gold components, workmanship charge and return terms be written down rather than left to a sales conversation.
Do not accept a combined weight as “gold weight” when the piece contains stones, enamel, springs or other metals. If the seller cannot state how the recorded weight was calculated, treat the price comparison as incomplete.
Purity checks: what each method can and cannot establish
Visual inspection and a loupe
Colour, polish, wear patterns and a tiny stamp can reveal clues or inconsistencies. They cannot establish alloy composition. Plated jewellery can look convincing, and a counterfeit stamp can be applied to a base-metal item. Use magnification to read the mark, not to turn it into an assay.
Magnet, scratch, sound and density tests
Improvised magnet, scratch, “ping” and water-displacement tests are not conclusive for jewellery. Many non-gold metals are non-magnetic, and a piece can contain springs, solder, stones or hollow sections that distort a simple test. The official guidance cited here supports recognized marks, records and professional testing; it does not validate a home test as a definitive purity result.
Recognized assay testing
When the mark is missing, inconsistent or disputed, arrange professional testing. BIS says a consumer can take jewellery or a sample to a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre for chargeable testing. The centre issues an assay report containing identification details. Ask in advance what sample is required, whether testing may leave a visible mark or remove material, the fee and the expected report date.

- Helpful in various ways
BIS guidance also describes compensation where hallmarked jewellery is found below the marked purity, subject to the stated calculation, testing charges and applicable process. Keep the original article, invoice, HUID details and assay report; do not alter or repair the item before a dispute examination.

| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Purity | What karat or fineness is declared, and does the mark match? | A lower-purity alloy contains less gold even when the design looks identical. |
| Net gold weight | Is the number net of stones and other parts, and is it recorded on the invoice? | Gross weight can overstate the amount of gold you are paying for. |
| Construction | Is it solid alloy, hollow, filled, overlay, rolled plate or electroplate? | Surface-treated products should not be priced as an equivalent solid alloy. |
| Workmanship and stones | What are the separate making, design and stone charges? | These costs may not track the recoverable gold value. |
| Seller and documentation | Can you identify the legal seller and obtain a detailed invoice? | Documentation determines what you can prove in a complaint. |
| Return terms | When can you return it, and who pays shipping? | A written exit reduces the risk of being trapped by a misdescription. |
| Independent testing | Where can the article be assayed if the claim is challenged? | Access to recognized testing is more meaningful than a seller’s visual assurance. |
For simple designs with little workmanship premium, historical FTC consumer guidance suggested comparing by gram weight and gold price. Treat that as a comparison principle, not a current universal pricing formula: gold prices, taxes, labour rates and resale spreads change by market and date.
Online and cross-border purchases
Before ordering, record the seller’s legal name, physical location, customer-service contact and return address. Confirm which country’s marking rules apply and whether the seller is responsible for import declarations, duties and returns. A foreign listing may use a familiar karat number without meeting the marking or consumer-remedy rules where you live.
Recommended Free Tools
Save a copy of the product page and checkout terms. Make sure the invoice will identify the exact article, not merely a catalogue name. If a seller refuses to disclose net weight, construction, fineness or a return policy, the information gap is itself a reason to walk away.
Warning signs that justify stopping the purchase
- The seller will not show the mark under magnification.
- A fineness or karat claim appears without the responsible maker or seller identification required in that market.
- The item is described as “solid gold” but the seller cannot explain whether it is hollow or surface-treated.
- Only a gross weight is supplied for a stone-set or multi-part article.
- The invoice omits purity, weight or the seller’s identity.
- A discount is conditional on paying outside the platform or abandoning the written return terms.
- The seller dismisses an HUID mismatch, missing component mark or unexplained country-of-origin issue.
- You are urged to rely on a magnet or a loupe instead of recognized testing.
If you suspect a misdescription after purchase
- Stop wearing, polishing or altering the item and preserve its packaging.
- Save the invoice, listing, payment record, photographs of marks and all messages.
- Ask the seller in writing to explain the discrepancy and state the remedy you want under the written return terms.
- Use the relevant verification route: BIS Care HUID verification in India, a recognized assay service where available, or the consumer-protection and hallmarking authority applicable to the sale.
- Obtain a professional assay report if the value justifies it, and ask the centre to record the article’s identifying details.
- Submit the complaint with the original invoice and report. In India, BIS identifies the authentic invoice as important for dispute resolution and describes a compensation framework for hallmarked items found below their marked purity.
Historical Indian fees and why you should recheck them
A 2024 Press Information Bureau release reported hallmarking at ₹45 per gold jewellery article, excluding taxes, and testing charges of ₹200. Those are historical reported figures, not a promise of today’s fee. Confirm the current charge with the BIS-recognized centre or jeweller before relying on it in a cost calculation.
A final pre-payment checklist
- Construction is stated: solid alloy, hollow, filled, overlay, rolled plate or electroplate.
- Declared karat or fineness is understood and matches the applicable local marking system.
- Every visible mark has been inspected under magnification.
- UK items have the relevant sponsor, fineness and assay-office marks when the rule applies; U.S. items have a quality mark and responsible trademark; Indian items have BIS marks and a verifiable HUID.
- Net precious-metal weight is separated from stones and other components.
- Workmanship, stone and other charges are itemized.
- Seller identity and return or refund terms are written down.
- Invoice, listing and payment records are saved.
- You know which recognized assay service or authority to use if the claim is challenged.
Following this sequence cannot eliminate every risk, but it changes the purchase from a visual judgment into a documented, jurisdiction-specific transaction with a practical route to verification and redress.
