How to Buy Gold in India: Jewellery, Coins, Bars, and Digital Options

The right way to buy gold in India depends on what you want to do with it. Choose jewellery when wearing or gifting matters, coins or bars when you want metal in your possession, and digital or market-linked products when you want price exposure without taking home an item. These formats are not interchangeable: purity checks, total costs, custody, resale, redemption, and legal protections differ.

Before paying, compare the quoted price with the complete invoice, verify the product or account structure, and decide how you will store or exit the purchase. For jewellery, the most concrete consumer safeguards are BIS hallmarking, HUID verification, and a detailed invoice.

Choose the format by your purpose

Start with the outcome you need rather than the form that appears cheapest on a shop screen. A piece bought for daily wear has different economics and risks from bullion bought for storage, while a digital balance is a claim governed by the provider’s terms.

Format Best suited to What you hold Checks before purchase Exit questions
Jewellery Wearing, gifting, and owning gold in an immediately usable form A finished article whose value reflects gold content plus product and transaction terms BIS logo, fineness mark, six-digit alphanumeric HUID, HUID verification, and an itemised invoice What will the seller pay on resale or allow on exchange, and which deductions apply?
Coins Gifting or holding a small physical bullion item A minted physical product with the seller’s stated weight and purity Product documentation, weight, purity, packaging, seller identity, and invoice; do not assume jewellery hallmarking rules cover every coin Will the same seller or another buyer repurchase it, and how is the price calculated?
Bars Holding a larger quantity of physical bullion A physical bar with a stated weight and purity Refiner or manufacturer documentation, tamper-evident packaging where supplied, weight, purity, and invoice What are the buyer’s testing, authentication, storage, and resale requirements?
Digital gold Convenience and account-based exposure without immediate delivery A provider-recorded claim whose custody, backing, fees, and delivery terms depend on the product Provider identity, legal structure, custody arrangements, fees, redemption rules, and account terms Can you sell or redeem, at what spread, with what minimums and charges?
Market-linked gold products Exposure through a financial account rather than possession of an ornament or bar A security or fund interest governed by its offering and account rules Issuer, regulatory framework, dealing hours, charges, tracking method, and account requirements How do you sell, settle, transfer, or redeem, and what market or platform costs apply?

No format is universally best. A jewellery price cannot be compared with a digital balance by looking only at the day’s gold quote, because the first includes a physical article and the second depends on a provider or financial product’s terms.

Understand purity and BIS hallmarking

What the BIS grades mean

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) lists six hallmarking grades for gold jewellery and artefacts. Caratage describes the proportion of gold in the alloy; the number in parentheses is fineness in parts per thousand.

Caratage Fineness mark
14K 585
18K 750
20K 833
22K 916
23K 958
24KS 995

The grade is not the complete price or a promise that every seller’s charges are identical. Weight, design, workmanship, taxes, premiums, and the seller’s terms can all affect what you pay and what you recover later. The fineness mark also does not by itself tell you whether an item is fairly priced.

What a jewellery hallmark contains

BIS describes hallmarking as “the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in precious metal articles.” For a hallmarked gold jewellery article, BIS says the hallmark includes:

  • The BIS logo.
  • The purity in caratage and fineness.
  • A unique six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number.

Use the BIS CARE app’s Verify HUID feature before completing the purchase. Compare the result with the article in front of you and with the invoice. A seller’s verbal assurance is not a substitute for checking the marks and the record.

Do not transfer jewellery assumptions to other formats

The BIS grade and HUID guidance above concerns hallmarked jewellery and artefacts. A coin, bar, digital balance, exchange-traded product, or bond has its own documentation and contractual or regulatory framework. Ask what standard applies to that specific product instead of assuming that a jewellery hallmark proves the quality or legal status of every gold purchase.

How to buy BIS-hallmarked jewellery

  1. Define the use. Decide whether the item is for daily wear, occasional wear, a gift, or simply to hold value. This determines whether design and comfort justify a finished product rather than bullion.
  2. Choose the fineness. Match the stated 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K, or 24KS grade to your needs. Ask whether the quoted gold rate is for that grade and whether the weight includes stones, enamel, springs, or other non-gold parts.
  3. Inspect every mark. Locate the BIS logo, the fineness/carატage mark, and the six-digit alphanumeric HUID. If a mark is unclear, ask the seller to show it under magnification or provide a clearer product record before you pay.
  4. Verify the HUID. In the BIS CARE app, use Verify HUID. Check that the returned details correspond to the article, not merely to a photograph or a different item in the display.
  5. Request a complete quote. Ask the seller to separate the gold value from any design, making, wastage, stone, service, delivery, or other charge. Ask which taxes apply and whether each amount will appear on the invoice.
  6. Read the exchange and resale terms. Clarify whether the seller buys back the same article, accepts it only in exchange, tests it again, deducts non-gold components, or uses a different rate. Obtain these terms in writing where possible.
  7. Take the authentic invoice. BIS advises buyers to obtain an authentic invoice giving details of the hallmarked article. Check the description, weight, fineness, HUID, price components, seller identity, date, and payment record before leaving.
  8. Store the records. Keep the invoice, HUID result, payment confirmation, photographs, and any written policy. They are useful for insurance, resale, exchange, and a purity dispute.

Buying physical coins and bars

Check the item, not just the headline rate

Coins and bars remove much of the design element of jewellery, but they still carry product and transaction terms. Ask the seller to state the exact weight and purity, identify the mint or refiner where relevant, and explain what documentation accompanies the item. Compare the total payable amount with the quoted metal value and ask whether a premium, packaging charge, delivery fee, or tax has been included.

Do not treat a jewellery HUID lookup as a universal test for a coin or bar. The relevant evidence may instead be the manufacturer’s assay or certificate, serial number, sealed packaging, seller invoice, and an independent test option. If the packaging is opened, ask how that affects later authentication or resale.

Plan storage before you buy

Physical bullion means you are responsible for possession. Decide where it will be stored, who can access it, how you will document it, and whether your household insurance covers the type and value you hold. A home safe, bank locker, or specialist custody arrangement has different costs, access rules, and risks; obtain the provider’s current terms rather than assuming coverage.

Confirm the exit route

Before buying, ask the seller to describe the repurchase process for that exact coin or bar. Questions include whether it must be in original packaging, whether the buyer performs a purity test, how long settlement takes, and which rate or deductions are used. A product that is easy to purchase may still have a narrow resale channel.

Digital gold: what to verify before using it

Digital gold gives you an account-based claim instead of immediate possession of a coin or bar. The provider may arrange custody and offer delivery or sale, but the practical result depends on the contract: who owns the underlying metal, where it is held, how it is insured, what happens if the provider fails, and how a customer can obtain metal or cash.

Read the product terms

  • Identify the legal entity operating the service and the entity holding any underlying metal.
  • Determine whether your balance represents allocated metal, a contractual claim, or another structure.
  • Check purchase and sale spreads, storage or custody charges, delivery fees, minimum quantities, and expiry or inactivity rules.
  • Read redemption conditions: permitted denominations, delivery locations, testing, timelines, and charges.
  • Find the complaint, dispute, insolvency, and account-closure procedures.
  • Confirm what records you receive and how transactions are reported for tax purposes.

Read SEBI’s caution carefully

SEBI published a page titled “Caution to public regarding dealing in ‘Digital Gold’” dated 8 November 2025. The notice should be read in full before you rely on a platform or infer a particular regulatory protection. Its title and date alone do not establish that every digital-gold service is regulated or unregulated, nor do they establish a specific guarantee, risk, or compensation arrangement for your account.

Market-linked gold options and sovereign gold bonds

Financial products can provide gold-price exposure through an investment or securities account rather than through jewellery or stored bullion. A SEBI-hosted June 2025 report on India’s gems and jewellery sector lists physical bars and coins, digital gold, and sovereign gold bonds among gold purchase or exposure options. That broad list is not a substitute for the current terms of a particular issue or product.

Questions to answer for any financial product

  • Who is the issuer, and under which regulator or rulebook does the product operate?
  • What account, brokerage, banking, or identification requirements apply?
  • How is the price determined, and when can you buy or sell?
  • What fees, spreads, commissions, or tracking differences reduce the outcome?
  • Is there a maturity, redemption window, lock-in, or secondary-market liquidity risk?
  • What happens if you need cash urgently or the product is discontinued?

Availability of new sovereign gold bond issues, current terms, and redemption or maturity conditions can change. Check the latest official issue notice or product document before committing money; do not carry forward an old issue’s terms to a new purchase.

Compare the complete cost before paying

The amount shown beside a gold rate is rarely enough to compare formats. Ask for a written total and identify every component.

Cost or adjustment What to ask
Gold value Which purity, weight, and rate are being used, and at what time?
Making or fabrication charge Does the item have a design or production charge, and is it a percentage or a fixed amount?
Wastage or other seller adjustment Is any additional amount applied, and what exactly does it cover?
Stones and non-gold components What is their separate weight and price, and are they excluded when resale value is calculated?
Premium Does the coin, bar, or financial product trade above the underlying gold value?
Taxes Which current taxes apply to this transaction, and are they itemised on the invoice?
Delivery, storage, or custody Are there one-time or recurring charges, and when are they collected?
Sale or redemption spread What price will you receive compared with the displayed purchase price?

Current GST rates, making-charge practices, premiums, spreads, storage fees, and other transaction amounts vary by product and time. Obtain the current figure from the seller or issuer and verify it on the invoice or official product document; do not use a historical rate as a present quote.

What to do if jewellery purity is disputed

  1. Stop relying on verbal explanations. Preserve the article, invoice, HUID result, payment proof, and messages with the seller.
  2. Ask for a documented response. State the marked fineness and the result or concern, and request the seller’s written resolution.
  3. Use a BIS-recognized centre. BIS says recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres can test consumer jewellery or samples on a chargeable basis and issue an assay report.
  4. Compare the report with the mark. Keep the report and the test receipt. It provides technical evidence of the measured content.
  5. Use the BIS remedy where it applies. BIS states that when purchased hallmarked jewellery tests below its marked purity, the customer is entitled to compensation calculated as twice the amount of the purity shortfall for the item’s weight, plus testing charges.

That remedy is tied to the conditions BIS describes for hallmarked jewellery. It should not be assumed to apply automatically to an unhallmarked item, a coin, a bar, or a digital account.

Match the format to common buying situations

You want to wear the gold

Consider jewellery, then focus on comfort, design, fineness, non-gold components, and the seller’s exchange policy. Verify the BIS marks and HUID before paying and keep the detailed invoice.

You are giving a gift

A coin or jewellery may be easier for the recipient to understand and possess than an account-based balance. Give the recipient the invoice and product documentation, and explain any resale, exchange, or storage limitation.

You want physical metal for long-term holding

Compare coins and bars by total premium, documentation, storage, insurance, and resale channel. Decide in advance how authenticity will be established if the original packaging is opened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want convenience and small, account-based purchases

Digital gold may be operationally convenient, but convenience does not remove provider risk or contractual conditions. Read custody, fees, redemption, and dispute terms and consider SEBI’s 8 November 2025 caution before using a service.

You want financial-market exposure

Evaluate the specific security, fund, or bond through its current offering document. Check liquidity, charges, maturity or redemption rules, account requirements, and the applicable regulatory framework rather than relying on the word “gold” alone.

Tax and changing rules

Tax treatment can depend on the format, transaction, holding period, conversion or redemption, and the rules in force when you sell. Current tax rates and treatment for jewellery, coins, bars, digital gold, and gold securities were not established here. Before a substantial purchase or sale, check the latest Indian tax guidance and the product’s current documents, and obtain professional advice when the transaction is complex.
