How to Buy Fractional Shares of Amazon (AMZN) Stock

You can buy less than one share of Amazon by using a brokerage that offers fractional trading for Amazon.com, Inc. (ticker AMZN). Open an eligible account, fund it, search for AMZN, choose a dollar amount or fractional quantity, review the broker’s order rules, and submit the trade. The exact minimum, order types, execution hours, customer eligibility and transfer rules come from the brokerage—not from Amazon or the stock exchange.

What a fractional Amazon share is

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defines a fractional share as “when you own less than one full share of a stock or other security.” Buying fractionally lets you invest a chosen dollar amount instead of waiting until you can pay for a whole share. Your economic exposure is smaller, but the underlying security is the same Amazon common stock.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Amazon’s common stock trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol AMZN, according to Amazon Investor Relations. In a brokerage search box, enter either “AMZN” or “Amazon.com, Inc.” and verify that the issuer and ticker shown on the trade ticket match before placing an order.

A fractional order can be expressed in either of two ways, depending on the platform:

  • Dollar-based order: You enter the amount you want to invest, such as $25. The broker converts that amount into a share quantity based on the execution price.
  • Share-quantity order: You enter a quantity below one, such as 0.125 share, if the broker permits quantity-based fractional orders.

The resulting quantity is normally calculated from the execution price, so the final number of shares and the final cash debit can differ slightly from an estimate shown before execution. A fractional purchase does not make Amazon’s price risk disappear; it only reduces the dollars exposed to each price movement.

What you need before placing an AMZN fractional order

An eligible brokerage account

Fractional trading is a brokerage feature. The SEC warns that firms can limit the securities available, the customers who may use the feature, minimum order values, order types, trading hours and the platforms on which orders can be entered. A brokerage that supports fractional shares generally does not promise that every account or every security is enabled. Check the firm’s current agreement and the live order screen for your account.

Available cash and the right account status

Have enough settled or otherwise available cash for the intended order and any amount the broker reserves while the order is pending. Account type, jurisdiction, identity verification and customer eligibility can affect access. If the fractional toggle or dollar-order field does not appear, read the broker’s eligibility explanation rather than assuming that AMZN itself is unavailable.

A clear decision about amount and control

Decide whether your priority is investing a fixed dollar amount or controlling the exact share quantity. Dollar orders are useful when you want to invest a set amount on a schedule. Quantity orders can be useful when you are targeting a particular fractional position, but they may not be offered by every firm.

How to buy fractional Amazon stock: the exact workflow

  1. Open or sign in to a brokerage account. Complete the account-opening and identity checks required by the firm. Confirm that the account type you are using is eligible for fractional trading.
  2. Fund the account. Transfer cash and wait until the platform identifies the funds as available for trading. The broker’s cash-availability rules control whether the order can be submitted.
  3. Find the security. Search for AMZN or Amazon.com, Inc. Select the result that identifies Amazon’s common stock and the Nasdaq listing. Do not rely on a company name alone if the search returns similarly named instruments.
  4. Open the trade ticket. Choose Buy, then look for a control labelled Fractional, Dollars, Amount, or a similar term. Some platforms expose fractional trading only after you select the security; others put it in an order-type menu.
  5. Enter the investment size. Type the dollar amount or fractional quantity allowed by the broker. If the ticket displays a minimum, precision limit or increment, your entry must meet that rule. For example, a firm that accepts quantities only to three decimal places will not accept an entry with four decimal places.
  6. Choose the permitted order type. Fractional orders may support fewer choices than whole-share orders. Select market or limit only if the ticket offers it and you understand how the order will execute. Review whether the order is valid for the day or has another duration.
  7. Review the preview. Check the displayed issuer, ticker, estimated share quantity, estimated price, dollar value, minimum-order message, order duration, execution window and any account-specific notices. A preview is an estimate; the confirmation after execution is the authoritative record.
  8. Submit the order. Send the order only after the details match your intention. If the platform asks for a final confirmation, approve it and save the order number.
  9. Verify execution. Open Orders or Activity to see whether the order filled, remains pending or was rejected. A pending order is not yet an owned position.
  10. Check the holding record. After execution, open Positions or Holdings and confirm the actual fractional quantity, average price and cost basis recorded by the broker. Keep the confirmation for your own records.

How much Amazon stock can you buy with $X?

For a dollar-based purchase, the approximate share quantity is:

fractional shares ≈ dollar amount ÷ AMZN execution price

For example, a $50 order at an execution price of $200 would represent approximately 0.25 share before any broker-specific rounding. This is an illustration of the calculation, not a current Amazon price or a prediction. The actual quantity depends on the price at which the broker executes the order and on its precision rules.

If you enter a share quantity instead, the approximate cash required is:

estimated cost ≈ fractional quantity × AMZN execution price

Price changes between the estimate and execution can alter the final cost. A market order generally prioritizes execution at available prices, while a limit order (when offered for fractional trading) sets a maximum price for a buy but may not fill.

Broker rules to compare before you trade

Do not choose a platform solely because it advertises “fractional shares.” Compare the terms that determine whether the trade works for your account and your intended strategy.

Feature Why it matters What to verify
AMZN eligibility A firm may support fractions for only a selected list of securities. Search AMZN in the signed-in trade ticket and read the firm’s eligible-security list if one is provided.
Customer and account eligibility Access may vary by country, account type, approval status or platform. Check the account agreement and the eligibility message attached to your account.
Minimum order A small dollar amount may be rejected even when the stock is eligible. Read the minimum displayed on the order ticket. Treat it as a firm-specific rule, not a market standard.
Quantity precision The number of decimal places controls how finely you can size a position. Look for the permitted increment, such as thousandths of a share.
Order types Fractional orders may not offer every order type available for whole shares. Confirm whether market, limit or other choices are available for AMZN fractions.
Duration An order can expire at the end of the trading day or follow another duration rule. Read the time-in-force label before submission.
Execution hours Entry may be allowed outside the session even when execution is not. Confirm when fractional orders actually execute.
Dividends and corporate actions The broker determines how cash, stock splits and other events are credited or processed. Read the fractional-share section of the account agreement.
Sale and transfer treatment A fractional position may not transfer in kind to another broker. Ask how the firm liquidates and remits fractional interests when you move accounts.

Illustrative current terms from Fidelity

Fidelity’s fractional-shares page, accessed October 9, 2026, states that eligible fractional quantities can be entered to 0.001 share when the order is at least $1.00. That $1.00 threshold and the three-decimal precision are Fidelity product rules, not requirements imposed on every brokerage.

The same Fidelity page says its fractional and dollar-based orders can use market or limit orders and are good for the day. It also states that orders may be entered before, during or after the market session but execute only during normal market hours. Confirm that those terms still appear in your live ticket because firms can amend product rules.

How a cash-to-share order is handled at Robinhood

Robinhood’s fractional-shares explanation describes converting the cash amount into an equivalent share amount and submitting the purchase at the best available price under prevailing market conditions. This illustrates why the previewed quantity is not guaranteed until execution. Consult the current support page and your order screen for the applicable order types, timing and eligibility.

When fractional orders execute

Each broker sets its own execution schedule. Some allow you to enter an order at any time but queue it for the next normal session; others may batch fractional orders or impose a cutoff. The phrase “submitted” means the broker accepted your instruction, not that you already own the shares.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before confirming, identify all three times shown by the platform:

  • Entry time: when the broker accepts your order.
  • Execution window: when the broker can seek a fill in the market.
  • Expiration time: when an unfilled day order is cancelled.

Fidelity’s published example is especially explicit: fractional orders can be entered before, during or after regular market hours but execute only during normal market hours. Other firms may use different schedules, so do not generalize that example to every account.

What you own after the purchase

Economic exposure and price risk

Your fractional position rises and falls with AMZN’s share price, subject to the broker’s pricing and accounting procedures. Investing $10 instead of the amount needed for a whole share reduces the dollars at risk, but it does not make Amazon a safer or diversified investment. A single-company position remains exposed to company-specific and market-wide losses.

Dividends, splits and other corporate actions

The SEC says fractional holders generally participate in dividends, stock splits and other corporate actions in proportion to their fractional ownership. The way a broker rounds a payment, credits cash, issues a resulting fraction or handles an election is controlled by the account agreement. Read those provisions if a corporate action matters to you.

Amazon’s listing history

Amazon Investor Relations says the company completed its initial public offering in May 1997 at $18.00 per share and that the historical price was adjusted to $0.075 after its listed stock splits, including the 20-for-1 split completed June 3, 2022. Those historical figures do not determine today’s price or guarantee future performance; they simply explain why older price references may look very different from current charts.

Selling a fractional AMZN position

To sell, open the same AMZN position, choose Sell, enter the dollar amount or fractional quantity the broker permits, review the order type and duration, and confirm the estimated proceeds. The same execution-hour and order-type restrictions that applied to your purchase can apply to the sale.

Check the broker’s liquidity language before you need to exit. The SEC specifically advises investors to understand how fractional interests can be sold and what limitations apply. A platform may aggregate fractional orders, fill them only at certain times or restrict particular order types. An order that cannot be sold immediately can matter during a fast market.

Transferring fractional shares to another brokerage

Do not assume a fractional AMZN holding can move directly between firms. Fidelity’s additional account terms state that fractional positions must be liquidated and transferred as cash when an account moves to another brokerage. That is a Fidelity-specific term, not a universal rule, but it demonstrates why transfer treatment belongs on your comparison checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before initiating a transfer, ask both firms:

  • Whether the fractional interest can transfer in kind.
  • If not, when and how the firm will sell it.
  • Whether the sale proceeds arrive as cash in the receiving account.
  • How the selling firm records the transaction and cost basis.
  • Whether a transfer request can leave a small residual cash balance.

Read the agreements at Fidelity’s account terms or the equivalent document for your chosen broker before submitting a transfer request.

Common problems and how to fix them

AMZN appears, but fractional trading is unavailable

The security may be eligible for whole-share trading but excluded from fractions, or your account may not qualify. Check the broker’s eligible-security list, account status and regional restrictions. If the trade ticket offers only whole-share quantity, do not enter a workaround that the platform does not support.

Your dollar amount is rejected

Look for a minimum order, a required increment or a cash-availability message. Fidelity, for example, publishes a $1.00 minimum for its eligible fractional quantities, but another firm can set a different threshold. Increase the amount only if it fits your plan; a minimum is not a reason to invest more than you intend.

The order remains pending

Review the execution window and time-in-force. A fractional order entered outside the broker’s execution session may wait for the next normal session. If the order is a day order, it may expire unfilled. Use the activity screen to distinguish pending, filled, partially filled and cancelled statuses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The final quantity differs from the preview

The preview uses an estimate. A changing market price, the broker’s conversion method or permitted decimal precision can alter the executed quantity. Rely on the trade confirmation and holdings record for the actual result.

You cannot transfer the position

Ask whether the broker requires liquidation of fractional interests. If so, determine the sale timing and how the cash proceeds will be delivered before starting the account transfer. A whole-share position and a fractional remainder may be treated differently.

A practical pre-trade checklist

  • Confirm the security is Amazon.com, Inc., ticker AMZN.
  • Verify that your account and customer profile are eligible for fractional trading.
  • Confirm available cash and the broker’s minimum order value.
  • Choose dollars or fractional quantity and note the permitted precision.
  • Read the available order types, duration and execution hours.
  • Review the issuer, estimated quantity, estimated price and total cash before submitting.
  • Save the confirmation and later check the recorded quantity and cost basis.
  • Understand how dividends, splits, corporate actions, sales and transfers are handled.
  • Remember that a smaller order is not the same as a diversified portfolio or a risk-free investment.

Questions to ask the brokerage

If the platform’s help page does not answer these questions, contact the firm before placing the order:

  1. Is AMZN currently eligible for fractional purchases and sales in my account?
  2. What is the minimum dollar value and smallest share increment?
  3. Can I use market and limit orders, and what time-in-force choices apply?
  4. When will an order entered now actually execute?
  5. How are fractional dividends, splits and other corporate actions processed?
  6. Can I transfer the position to another broker without selling the fraction?
  7. What happens if I close the account while a fractional remainder is present?

Broker policies can change, so use the current agreement and signed-in order screen as the controlling information for your account. The SEC’s investor bulletin, “Fractional Share Investing – Buying a Slice Instead of the Whole Share,” also recommends checking eligibility, order limitations, trading hours, liquidity and account terms before investing.
