Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has two publicly traded common-stock classes on the NYSE:

- BRK.A: Class A common stock.
- BRK.B: Class B common stock.
Both are exchange-traded securities, not physical products. To purchase either one, you need a funded brokerage account with permission to trade U.S. exchange-listed shares. The brokerage’s symbol search and order ticket should identify Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and the selected class before you place an order.

Class A versus Class B

The voting language above comes from Berkshire Hathaway’s 2026 proxy statement: “Each share of Class A Stock is entitled to one vote per share and each share of Class B Stock is entitled to one-ten-thousandth (1/10,000) of one vote per share on all matters submitted to a vote of the Corporation.”
Berkshire’s older common-stock webpage still describes a 30-to-1 relationship. That figure is superseded for current decisions; use the 1,500-to-1 ratio in the 2026 proxy statement.
Which class should you buy?
Choose Class A when the share-level voting right or conversion privilege matters
A Class A share has the greater voting right on a per-share basis. It is also the only class that can be converted into Class B. If you hold Class A and request conversion, the current proxy ratio is one A share for 1,500 B shares. The conversion direction is not reversible: after receiving Class B, you cannot convert those shares back into Class A.
Choose Class B when you want the class designed for smaller purchases
Class B provides a much smaller economic unit than one Class A share because one A share corresponds to 1,500 B shares under the current conversion terms. It has a proportionally smaller vote, but it is the class many investors investigate when a whole Class A share would require more capital than they intend to commit. The relevant question is not which ticker has a better expected return; the two classes represent different ownership units with different voting and conversion features.
Do not decide from a stale price or old ratio
Share prices change continuously, and this article does not provide a live quote. Check the current quote and the order preview at the time you trade. Also check the date of any Berkshire webpage you read: the company’s older common-stock page contains the outdated 30-to-1 conversion description, while the 2026 proxy states 1,500-to-1.

What to check before opening the order ticket
- Account access: Confirm that the account can trade securities listed on the NYSE and that it is approved for the type of transaction you intend to use.
- Funding: Make sure settled or otherwise available cash is sufficient for the proposed order and any applicable brokerage charges.
- Correct symbol: Use BRK.A for Class A or BRK.B for Class B. Similar-looking search results should be checked against the company name and class designation.
- Order terms: Read the estimated quantity, price instructions, time-in-force setting and total estimated cost before submitting.
- Fractional eligibility: If you want less than one share, verify that the broker permits fractional orders for this specific ticker rather than assuming its general fractional-share feature applies.
How to buy a whole Berkshire share
- Sign in to your brokerage account. Use the broker’s normal trade or invest function. If you do not have an account, complete its identity, funding and market-access requirements before attempting the order.
- Search for the ticker. Enter
BRK.Afor Class A orBRK.Bfor Class B. Open the result that identifies Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and the intended class on the NYSE. - Open the buy ticket. Select “Buy” or the equivalent action, then choose whole-share quantity if you are purchasing one or more complete shares.
- Set the order instructions. Select the order type and duration offered by your broker. A market order and a limit order can behave differently, so read the broker’s explanation and the displayed estimate instead of treating the quoted price as guaranteed.
- Review the preview. Confirm the ticker, class, number of shares, estimated execution price, estimated total, fees if any, and the account from which funds will be drawn. The preview is the last practical checkpoint for catching BRK.A-versus-BRK.B mistakes.
- Submit and retain the confirmation. After placing the order, save the confirmation number or activity record. An order that remains open has not necessarily executed; check its status in the account.
- Verify the resulting position. Once the broker reports execution, look at the positions page to confirm the ticker, filled quantity and average cost shown by the account.
Broker screens use different labels, and the exact sequence can vary. The essential controls are consistent: identify the correct NYSE symbol, specify the intended quantity and price instructions, inspect the preview and verify execution afterward.
How fractional Berkshire purchases work
A fractional share is a position representing less than one whole share. Fractional investing is not automatically available for every security at every brokerage. The SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin dated November 9, 2020, explains that firms may limit fractional investing to selected securities and may impose their own order-type, timing, minimum-size, fee, platform, voting, liquidity and transfer rules.
Check eligibility for the exact ticker
Ask the broker specifically whether fractional orders are available for BRK.A, BRK.B, or both. A broker’s general statement that it supports fractional shares does not establish that either Berkshire class is eligible. Confirm the answer in the current eligible-security list or in the order ticket itself.
Ask how the order is handled
Before submitting a fractional order, obtain clear answers to these questions:
- Is the order accepted during the same trading hours as whole-share orders?
- Which order types are permitted for fractions?
- Does the broker aggregate fractional orders with other customers’ orders?
- When and at what price is an aggregated order executed?
- Are there commissions, spreads, minimums or other charges that apply specifically to fractional transactions?
- Do fractional positions receive voting rights, and if so, how are those rights administered?
- Can a fractional position be transferred to another brokerage, or must it be sold or converted to cash first?
- How are dividends or other corporate actions handled for the fractional amount?
The answers can differ by firm and by security. Keep the broker’s current terms for your records, because a policy that applies to one ticker or account type may not apply to the other Berkshire class.

- Search the eligible ticker and select the fractional or dollar-based quantity option if the broker displays it.
- Enter either the permitted fraction or the dollar amount, depending on the broker’s interface.
- Read the order preview for the expected fractional quantity, execution conditions, fees and any warning about delayed or aggregated execution.
- Submit only when the displayed terms match your instructions, then check the activity record and resulting position.
Converting Class A into Class B
Conversion is a one-way feature from Class A to Class B. Under Berkshire’s 2026 proxy, one Class A share is convertible into 1,500 Class B shares. A Class B share cannot be converted back into Class A.

Berkshire’s official common-stock page says that holders of street-name Class A shares should contact their broker or bank nominee to request a conversion. “Street name” means the position is held through the intermediary rather than registered directly in your own name. Therefore, the practical route is to ask the institution that holds your BRK.A position for its current conversion procedure, forms, deadlines and any charges.
Do not assume that selling Class A and buying Class B is the same as a conversion. A sale and a new purchase are separate trades with their own execution prices and account consequences. If your objective is specifically to use Berkshire’s conversion mechanism, ask the holder of the Class A position for the institution’s conversion instructions.
Voting and ownership details
The 2026 proxy gives the voting distinction in precise terms: each Class A share has one vote, while each Class B share has 1/10,000 of one Class A vote. The classes therefore do not have identical voting rights, even though both are Berkshire common stock.

The same proxy reports 510,766 Class A shares and 1,390,722,404 Class B shares outstanding and entitled to vote as of March 4, 2026. Those are dated record-date figures, not a permanent count or a current quote. They describe the shares outstanding and entitled to vote on that specified date.
Costs, execution and account limitations
The amount required for a purchase depends on the live market price, the quantity and the order instructions you choose. Because prices change continuously, use the broker’s current quote and preview rather than an old article or a cached figure.
Potential account-level costs and restrictions are broker-specific. Review the commission schedule, any account minimums, exchange or regulatory charges shown by the broker, and the treatment of fractional positions. The SEC’s guidance notes that firms can impose limits on eligible securities, order types, timing, minimum transaction size, fees, voting, liquidity and transfers for fractional investing.

Execution is also not the same as submitting an order. A pending order, a partially filled order or an aggregated fractional order may show a different status from a completed purchase. Check the activity page and position ledger for the final quantity and execution details.

Choosing the wrong class
Symptom: The preview shows BRK.A when you intended BRK.B, or the reverse.
Fix: Cancel or amend the order before submission if the broker permits it. If it has already executed, contact the broker promptly to understand the available sell and repurchase process; those would be separate transactions, not an automatic class correction.
Assuming fractional availability
Symptom: The broker supports fractional shares generally, but the order ticket allows only whole shares for the selected Berkshire ticker.
Fix: Treat the ticker-specific restriction as controlling. Ask whether the broker has a separate eligibility list or whether the limitation applies to both classes.
Using the old 30-to-1 conversion figure
Symptom: A webpage or forum says one A share converts into 30 B shares.

Assuming Class B can be upgraded to Class A
Symptom: You expect a later conversion from B to A.
Fix: The company’s official information states that Class B is not convertible into Class A. Decide which class you want before purchasing rather than relying on a future upgrade.

Confusing an open order with a completed holding
Symptom: The order appears in “open” or “pending” activity, but the position balance has not changed.
Fix: Wait for the broker’s execution status and verify the filled quantity in the positions page. If the order remains open beyond the conditions you intended, review its duration and price instructions or contact the broker.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you decided whether you want BRK.A or BRK.B?
- Did you confirm the ticker, company name and NYSE listing in the order preview?
- Do you understand that Class A has one vote per share and Class B has 1/10,000 of a Class A vote?
- If conversion matters, did you note that the current ratio is 1,500 B for one A and that the direction is one-way?
- If you need a fractional amount, did you verify eligibility for the exact ticker and read the broker’s execution, fee, voting and transfer terms?
- Did you review the live estimated total and any displayed charges before submitting?
- Afterward, did you confirm execution and the resulting position rather than relying only on an order-submission message?
