How to Buy ASX 200 Shares Through a Broker

To buy exposure to the S&P/ASX 200, first decide whether you want individual companies that make up the index or an ASX-listed exchange-traded fund (ETF) that seeks to track the index. You then choose an Australian broker, open and fund an account, select the security and order instructions, and submit the order. The broker sends it to the market; your purchase is complete only when a buy and sell order match and the broker confirms execution.

For ASX-listed shares, ASX says you need a CHESS sponsoring broker. With broker-sponsored holdings, the securities are recorded in your name on the CHESS subregister and linked to a Holder Identification Number (HIN). An ETF is a different investment from owning every constituent directly, so read the ETF’s current product disclosure statement (PDS) before placing an order.

What “ASX 200 shares” can mean

The phrase can describe two materially different purchases. Your choice affects what you own, how you trade and which documents you need to read.

Buying individual companies in the index

The S&P/ASX 200 is an index of large and frequently traded companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. Buying an individual constituent means you own shares in that one company, subject to the company’s own price movements, dividends, announcements and corporate actions. You must identify the company’s ASX market code and place a separate order for the number of shares you want.

Owning one or several constituents does not automatically reproduce the performance of the whole index. The index contains many companies, and its composition and weightings can change. A portfolio assembled from individual shares also requires you to decide which companies to buy, how much to allocate and when to rebalance.

Buying an ASX-listed ETF that tracks the index

An ETF is a fund traded on the ASX like a share. Some ETFs seek to track an index such as the S&P/ASX 200. Buying units gives you exposure to the ETF’s portfolio rather than direct registration of each underlying company in your own name. The ETF has its own objective, fees, risks, structure and trading arrangements.

Before buying an ETF, read its current PDS. Check the stated index objective, management costs, other fees, risks, distribution policy, how units are created and redeemed, and the process for buying and selling on the exchange. The fact that an ETF follows an index does not remove market risk or guarantee that its return will exactly match the index.

What a broker does

A broker provides the account and market access used to submit your order. In an execution-only service, you make the investment decision and enter the order yourself. The broker generally does not assess whether the investment is suitable for you or advise you to buy a particular share. A full-service broker can provide personal assistance or advice and usually charges more for that service.

When you submit an order, you specify the security, quantity and instructions such as a maximum price. The broker transmits the order to the ASX market. A trade occurs when compatible buy and sell orders match. Until that happens, an order can remain open, be partially filled or expire according to its instructions. A screen saying “submitted” is not the same as a completed trade.

Service model How decisions are made Typical cost pattern When it may fit
Online, execution-only broker You choose the security, quantity and order terms; the platform submits your instruction. Often a flat brokerage charge for smaller trades, with percentage-based charging possible for larger trades; check the provider’s current schedule. Investors who can research and place orders without personal advice.
Full-service broker A broker may discuss investments or provide advice, depending on the service and your agreement. Fees are usually higher than for online execution-only services; confirm every brokerage and advice charge. Investors who value human support or advice and accept the additional cost.

These are service categories, not guarantees about any provider. Services, products, order tools and charges differ, so compare the actual terms before opening an account.

Decide what you need before comparing brokers

There is no universally “best” ASX broker. ASX maintains directories of brokers and the products or services they support, but it does not recommend a particular provider. Use a directory as a starting point, then verify the details directly with each broker.

Execution and advice

Decide whether you want to enter your own orders or need personal advice. If you want advice, ask what is included, whether advice is ongoing or one-off, and how it is charged. If you choose execution-only, make sure you are comfortable researching securities, checking announcements and selecting order instructions yourself.

Supported securities and markets

Confirm that the broker supports the exact instruments you intend to buy. Some platforms may offer Australian shares and ETFs but not every security, market or order feature. Ask whether the account can trade ASX-listed ordinary shares, listed investment products and the ETF you are considering. Do not assume that a platform offering “share trading” supports every product.

Brokerage and account charges

Read the current fee schedule rather than relying on an advertised headline rate. Check brokerage for the trade sizes you expect, whether pricing is flat or percentage-based, and whether there are account, data, inactivity, currency or other service charges. A low brokerage rate can be less useful if the account has costs that matter to your trading pattern.

Opening, funding and settlement

Ask what identity details, Australian bank information and verification documents are required. Confirm how you transfer cash into the account, whether funds must arrive before an order is accepted, and how the broker communicates payment instructions after execution. Requirements vary by provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Order tools and support

Compare the order types available, price alerts, research tools, customer support hours and the process for correcting or cancelling an order. A simple interface can be valuable if it clearly displays the market code, quantity, price and order status before you confirm.

Registration and transfers

Ask whether the account uses broker sponsorship through CHESS and how transfers, changes of broker and issuer communications are handled. Understand whether holdings remain connected to the sponsoring broker and what you must do if you close or move the account.

Step-by-step: buying an individual ASX 200 constituent

  1. Define the purchase. Write down the company you intend to buy, why it fits your plan, the amount you can invest and whether you want one transaction or several. The broker can execute an instruction but does not decide whether the investment is appropriate.
  2. Check the company and market code. Confirm the exact ASX code, security type and trading market. Similar company names can cause costly mistakes. Check the quote and company information in the broker platform or another reliable market source immediately before ordering.
  3. Choose and verify a broker. Compare execution-only and full-service options, supported products, current brokerage, other charges, funding arrangements, order tools and CHESS sponsorship. ASX’s broker directory can help identify providers, but you must confirm the terms with the provider.
  4. Open the account. Complete the broker’s application, identity checks and Australian banking details. Read the account terms, privacy information, client-money arrangements and fee schedule before accepting them.
  5. Fund the account. Transfer the required cash using the broker’s stated method and allow for the purchase price, brokerage and any applicable charges. Do not rely on an account balance that has not cleared if the broker requires cleared funds before trading.
  6. Enter the order ticket. Select the verified market code, enter the number of shares and choose the order type. A market order generally prioritises execution at available prices; a limit order sets the highest price you will pay for a buy order. Use the exact instruction offered by your broker and understand its duration, partial-fill and cancellation rules.
  7. Review before sending. Check the buy or sell direction, code, quantity, limit price, order duration and estimated total cost. A misplaced decimal or an incorrect code can produce a very different transaction. Submit only after the confirmation screen matches your intention.
  8. Monitor execution. The order may fill immediately, remain open, fill in parts or expire. Check the broker’s status rather than assuming that submission means execution. Cancel or amend an open order only after confirming the platform’s rules and any associated charges.
  9. Read the confirmation. After execution, review the trade date, quantity filled, price, brokerage, other charges and settlement date. Keep the confirmation for your records.
  10. Meet settlement and check registration. Follow the broker’s payment instructions and verify when cash is due. ASX share-buying guidance cited for this process describes payment as due within two days of execution (T+2); settlement conventions can change, so confirm the current date with your broker. Check that the holding appears correctly and that your HIN and contact details are accurate.

How to place the order correctly

Identify the security, not just the company name

Use the ASX market code shown by the broker and verify whether the instrument is an ordinary share, an ETF unit or another listed product. Read the security description on the order ticket. This is especially important when companies have similar names or when an ETF’s name resembles the index it references.

Choose quantity and price instructions

Enter the number of shares or ETF units you want. If you use a limit order, set the maximum price you will pay and understand that the order might not execute if the market does not reach your limit. A market order can execute at prices that move while your instruction is being processed. The available order types, validity periods and protections depend on the broker’s platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand partial fills

An order can execute in more than one transaction if enough matching sellers are not available at the same price. Check whether brokerage is charged per order or per execution and how the platform displays a partially filled order. Do not place a duplicate order simply because the first one has not filled; first check its live status.

Keep the confirmation separate from the quote

A live quote is an indication of the market at a point in time. The contract note or execution confirmation is the record of what actually traded. Retain confirmations, funding records and statements so you can reconcile holdings and costs later.

CHESS-sponsored and issuer-sponsored holdings

Registration is separate from the decision to buy a company or ETF. Ask the broker which sponsorship arrangement applies and read the transfer instructions before you trade.

Feature CHESS broker-sponsored Issuer-sponsored
Where the holding is recorded On the CHESS subregister in the investor’s name. On the issuer’s subregister.
Identifier Linked to a Holder Identification Number (HIN). Uses the issuer’s sponsored holding record and its associated reference details.
How trades are placed Through the sponsoring broker while sponsorship remains in place. Trading still requires a broker, but the registration is maintained by the issuer’s subregister rather than broker sponsorship.
Moving between arrangements Follow the broker’s transfer or sponsorship-change process and confirm the destination details. Follow the issuer and broker instructions for transferring to CHESS or another registration arrangement.

CHESS sponsorship records ownership registration; it is not protection against a falling share price, business failure or other investment loss. Keep your HIN, statements and contact details secure, and update them when your circumstances change.

Costs, cash and settlement

Brokerage is only one cost

Online brokers commonly use a flat charge for smaller trades and may switch to a percentage charge as trade value increases. Full-service fees are generally higher because they can include personal assistance or advice. The exact amount depends on the provider and account, so use the current fee schedule for your calculation.

For each proposed order, estimate the purchase value plus brokerage and any other disclosed charges. For an ETF, include the fund’s management costs and other expenses described in its PDS; these are separate from the brokerage you pay when trading the units on the ASX.

Settlement is a payment obligation

Execution creates an obligation even if you have not yet seen the final holding in your portfolio. The ASX share-buying guidance cited for this process states that payment is due within two business days of execution (T+2). The ETF trading guidance also describes T+2 settlement and brokerage. Because market conventions and broker procedures can change, verify the settlement date shown on your confirmation and follow the broker’s current payment instructions.

Use only verified payment details

Transfer funds using the bank details displayed in the broker’s secure account area or confirmed through an established support channel. Retain the transfer receipt and check that the cash ledger has updated. Never infer settlement timing from the date you initiated a bank transfer.

If you choose an index-tracking ETF

Read the PDS before ordering

The PDS should state what index the ETF seeks to track, how it intends to do so, fees and costs, principal risks, distributions and dealing arrangements. Check whether the product uses physical holdings, another structure or a method that can create tracking differences. The ETF’s name alone is not enough to establish its objective or risk profile.

Trade it like a listed security

You buy and sell ETF units through a broker using an ASX order ticket. Confirm the ETF’s code, unit quantity, order type, price and validity. Brokerage applies, and the cited ASX guidance describes settlement on T+2. Units can trade at a price that differs from the value of the underlying portfolio during the trading day.

Know what you do and do not own

An ETF unit represents an interest in the fund, not a separate CHESS registration for every company held by the fund in your personal name. The fund may receive dividends, incur expenses and make distributions according to its governing documents. Use the PDS and periodic reports to understand those mechanics.

After the trade: records and ongoing checks

Reconcile your holding

Compare the broker’s confirmation with the portfolio screen, cash ledger and your bank account. Check the filled quantity, average price, brokerage and settlement date. If the quantity is lower than ordered, determine whether the order is partially filled or still open before taking another action.

Maintain your registration details

Keep your name, address, email, bank details and HIN information current with the broker. Incorrect details can delay statements, corporate-action notices or transfers. If you change brokers, ask how sponsorship and holdings will move and obtain written confirmation when the transfer is complete.

Monitor the investment on its own terms

For an individual company, follow company announcements and reassess whether the investment still fits your plan. For an ETF, monitor changes to its PDS, index objective, fees, risks and distributions. An index label does not eliminate the need to understand the product.

Common problems and how to resolve them

“My order says submitted, but I do not own the shares.”

Submission means the broker accepted your instruction for transmission; it does not prove that a market match occurred. Open the order-status screen, check whether it is open, partially filled, filled or expired, and read the execution confirmation.

“The order did not execute at my expected price.”

A limit order executes only at its stated price or a better one and can remain unfilled. A market order seeks execution at available prices, which can change quickly. Review the order type, price and market conditions shown by the broker before deciding whether to amend or cancel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The cash has left my bank account, but settlement is still pending.”

Bank-transfer timing and broker ledger timing can differ. Check the broker’s cleared-funds status, the settlement date on the confirmation and the payment reference you used. Contact the broker promptly if the settlement deadline is approaching and the cash has not been credited.

“I cannot find the holding under my name.”

Confirm whether the position is CHESS broker-sponsored or issuer-sponsored, then check the correct statement or registry record. Verify the HIN or issuer reference, legal name and contact details. Ask the broker or issuer registry to investigate discrepancies rather than opening a duplicate position.

“The ETF does not behave exactly like the index.”

Review the ETF’s PDS for its tracking method, fees, expenses, distributions and risks. Trading prices, fund costs and timing differences can produce returns that differ from the index. The product objective describes what the fund seeks to do, not a guaranteed result.

A practical pre-order checklist

  • Have you decided between individual constituents and an index-tracking ETF?
  • Have you confirmed the exact ASX code and security description?
  • Does the broker support that security and the service level you need?
  • Have you checked current brokerage, account charges and any advice fees?
  • Are your identity, Australian bank and contact details complete?
  • Is enough cleared cash available for the purchase, brokerage and other charges?
  • Did you select the correct buy direction, quantity, price and order duration?
  • Did you save the execution confirmation and settlement date?
  • Do you understand whether the holding is CHESS broker-sponsored or issuer-sponsored?
  • If it is an ETF, have you read the current PDS and understood its objective, costs and risks?

What a broker cannot decide for you

A broker can provide market access and execute an instruction, but choosing a security, deciding how much to invest and judging whether the risk suits your circumstances remain your responsibility in an execution-only account. A full-service relationship may include advice, but you should still understand the scope and cost of that advice. No sponsorship arrangement, order type or index label guarantees a profit or prevents losses.
